Valpo Basketball / The Shot
April 04, 2021, 10:41:41 PM
Will The Shot, by Bryce Drew, be eclipsed by the 40' Final Four buzzer beater, by Jalen Suggs, during future NCAA Basketball Tournament telecasts?

The absence of a pep band was not the only strange thing inside the ARC today, at the basketball game against Evansville.  No, a much stranger thing took place under the west backboard.  There were two toddlers that were assigned there to mop sweat from the floor.  I say toddlers, because I estimate that they were no older than 5 years old.  They were cute little girls, but they had no business doing that job as they were physically unable to handle the mops.  Of course it certainly was not their fault, but rather that of whoever is in charge of filling that activity.  There was a member of the ARC Event staff stationed near that backboard all game, who did absolutely nothing to help the kids and make sure that the floor was taken care of.  Young children should not be used for this activity.  It was so bad that late in the game, an Evansville team manager ran over, grabbed a mop, and dried off the floor prior to his team shooting a free throw - how bad is this?  I, and the people around me were embarrassed.

VU VB had their home opener tonight - unfortunately a 0-3 sweep to powerhouse UNI.  But I digress.  I want to report on the 2019-2020  ARC experience.
:) The video board showed live player stats for players on the floor.  This is a first for VB.  When I say live I mean LIVE.  Unlike what we've been used to for BB games, Updates were virtually instantaneous.  In addition, there is a much better interface. There were even replays.
??? For the concession haters, You'll be happy to know that there was no floor level concession stand open (none open anywhere).  Of course that meant that those of us in the hot gym, were not able to buy even a bottle of water.
>:( No change to the historically horrible PA system.

Valpo Basketball / Tribute to Alec Peters
March 02, 2017, 03:23:30 PM
I am sad that Alec Peters is unable to finish out his college career on the court, not only for the fans, but especially for Alec himself. I would guess that he feels worse than the fans do.
I have watched every home game, and a few away games that Alec played at VU.  Not only do I think that he is a great player, but he is a better person off the court.
It is rare to see a person with the great talent that he possesses, think as much about his team mates as of his self.
Alec, it has been my (and my wife's) pleasure watching you play.  We wish you a speedy recovery and we'll be looking for you in the NBA.
This photo was taken just prior to Alec inbounding the ball to start the second half of what turned out to be his last basketball game for Valparaiso University

Valpo Basketball / Video screen stats - or lack of them.
February 11, 2016, 11:33:39 PM
Does anyone know why game states are not being shown on the video board?  I'm afraid the answer will be because of the 100th anniversary "stuff" that we are being fed this year.  Not having stats shown, in game, has made this fans experience not as good as in previous years (fortunately the teams play has made up the difference).

The game is televised on the PAC-12 network, which can be found on Comcast cable Ch. 419.  Unfortunately you must have  a sports package to get this channel.
If you don't have a Comcast sports package, you can go to
http://pac-12.com/live?network=P12WAS and stream the game on your computer (if you have a qualifying service provider).  Good luck with this though - I tried it Sunday and saw more buffering than game.

I tuned into ESPN3 to watch Michigan State- Arkansas-PB game, and the color commentator is Homer Drew.  He is doing a very fine job.  Way to go Homer.

Here I go again. Fall schedules are out and once again I have to beg for a printable schedule.  Last year a work around was finally provided, but this year - NADA.
Is it too much to ask that this fan friendly service be provided automatically?  Pretty please!

The Director's Corner / Printable schedules
September 11, 2014, 11:02:38 PM
Why can't you provide  "printable" schedules (PDF) on the Athletics website, so that we fans can print them on one page, and without using up our color ink cartridges?
An example can be found on this site:

Valpo Basketball / A question for any BB referee
January 02, 2014, 09:52:12 PM
If it is foul for a defensive player to put his hand/arm on the body of an offensive player, why isn't it a foul when a offensive player puts his hand/arm on the body of a defensive player?

UIC's Barlow did this every time he dribbled toward the basket and was never called for it - is this:
1. star treatment;
2. not a foul, or;
3. poor officiating?

Valpo Basketball / BB on the radio
November 08, 2013, 10:34:33 PM
What happened to the radio stations that used to carry the basketball games?  I like to listen to Todd on the post game show, but WVUR is only listenable within 8 feet of the campus.  What a bummer.

Valpo Basketball / BB/VB schedule conflict
September 10, 2013, 11:01:54 PM
On Friday, Nov. 8, The MBB team plays Murray State at 7:30.
On Friday, Nov. 8, the VB team plays Cleveland State at 7:00.

Both at the ARC.

The floor will be quite crowded, don't you think?

Please don't lump us all with immature idiots like Blaha blah. We aren't all bad.  Also the state of Michigan is not all bad (Ray Mccallum not withstanding), although the city of Detroit isn't the greatest (being kind).
The good thing is that you don't have to go through Detroit in order to get to Auburn Hills.
Let's hope that we get to see a good game.

The Director's Corner / Video scoreboard delay
February 01, 2013, 11:46:45 PM
Is it possible to update the video scoreboard on a realtime basis?  It is somewhat bush league to be showing a lineup of players that all, or part, are not even playing and not showing players that are on the floor.  It just takes too long to get the correct lineup, points , rebounds and fouls.
In this day of high technology there doesn't seem to be an excuse for this.

Michigan State will host Horizon League champion Cleveland State on Thursday afternoon in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament. The Spartans will take on the Vikings at home on Thursday at 1 p.m. at DeMartin Stadium. The 48-team field was announced on Monday afternoon.

Are BB being games carried on any radio stations - I can't find any mention on the Vaplo website?

The Director's Corner / ARC sound system
October 23, 2012, 09:59:10 PM
When is the ARC going to get a sound system that can actually be heard?  In the relative quiet of a volleyball game, announcements are merely garbled sounds, so what can we expect during men's basketball games?  Someone, somewhere has to have an answer to this long existing problem.

Other Sports / Sadly, VB is out of the HL tourney
November 19, 2011, 04:08:02 PM
UM, continued their unbeaten streak, beating our valiant VB ladies in straight sets.  With one match ( @ W. Mich,) Carin Avery's team has 20 wins, for the 10th straight season.  Congratulations to this young team for a hard fought season.  They provided their supporters with many good wins.

.....leadership to Michigan State, his fourth college. Check out this article about Wood, from Mlive.com.
Tom Izzo doesn't really care for the transfer rule , and neither does Homer.

Other Sports / VB wins
September 30, 2011, 10:32:28 PM
The  VB team defeated WSU 3-0, tonight.  Besides a dominating victory, there was another exciting feature - video replay on the new video scoreboards.  The replays were actually shown between games, but it is a first step.  Oh, and the picture was pretty darn good.   :)

Valpo Basketball / Brandon on a flat top
September 19, 2011, 04:53:14 PM
Some (maybe most) Crusader fans probably don't know that Brandon Wood will be playing a game on the USS Carl Vinson, the aircraft carrier that was used to bury bin laudin's body, on 11-11-11.  What a thrill for him.  More information can be seen here - http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/2011/09/ap-navy-michigan-north-carolina-excited-for-carrier-classic-carl-vinson-091511/
