Gregg Doyel      an award-winning writer for the Indianapolis Star, attended the Indiana State vs. Bradley men's basketball game Saturday at Hulman Center in Terre Haute, Indiana. He wrote a column about the Sycamores' ascendance to the top of the Missouri Valley Conference.

While there, Doyel observed what he characterized as Wardle's "histrionics" in dealing with Braves players during the game.

"I'm sitting next to the Bradley bench and dislike its coach on sight," Doyel wlrote on X.com. "The way he talks to his players, his bench, his histrionics ... you can HAVE him. And then I realize it's Brian Wardle, and it all adds up.

"Again: You can HAVE this guy."

The original post by Doyel had 58,000 views on X.com, the site formerly known as Twitter. Many of the reposts included criticism of Doyel or support for Wardle, who has been Bradley's head coach since 2015 and received a
contract extension last summer.

One X.com user asked Doyel for clarification."Who can have him?" @TedConnellyIV asked. "You realized it's Wardle? Did you think Jim (Molinari) was still there? What's your history with him? Please expound. Criticism is the worst when it is cryptic."

Replied Doyel: "Zero history. Just what I saw last night. There doesn't have to be a conspiracy. Sometimes things are exactly what they seem. ... Nothing cryptic about my criticism. I hate bullies. He's a bully. There's a difference between hard coaching and humiliation. He goes for the latter. Hell with him."

Wardle declined to comment on the criticism when contacted about comments by Doyel, whose newspaper is part of Gannett and the USA TODAY Network, along with the Journal Star.

Bradley has suspended women's basketball coach Kate Popovec-Goss for at least 10 games, according to release from the schoolThe school said the second-year coach is suspended through the rest of the nonconference season, which is 10 games, starting Sunday with a scheduled game against Central Michigan. Assistant Armelia Horton will serve as interim coach for the Braves (0-1), who lost their season opener on Nov. 6 at Kansas City."This decision has been made in accordance with the university's commitment to upholding the values and standards expected of its staff," theschool said in a release. "Further details will not be disclosed at this time, as the university respects the confidentiality of personnel matters."
Cody Roskens, the school's assistant director of athletic communications, had no additional comment when asked Saturday during BU's men's basketball game.

The Bradley women are scheduled to open the Missouri Valley Conference season on Dec. 30.Background:Why Bradley was the perfect fit for its newest women's basketball coach
Popovec-Goss was hired in April 2022 after time as associate head coach and recruiting director at Northwestern. She took over for Andrea Gorski, who retired in late March after 25 years of coaching.Popovec played at Pittsburgh and Northwestern, then returned to her alma mater as an assistant in 2017. In the spring of 2018, she was named Northwestern's recruiting and defensive coordinator. The up-and-coming coach was named associate head coach under Joe McKeown at Northwestern in August of 2021 before landing with Bradley for the 2022-23 season.

Around the Valley / MVC MBB Predictions

Valparaiso hired the Valley's only new head coach. After a successful assistant coaching run at Gonzaga, Roger Powell Jr returns to another place where he enjoyed great success as an assistant. Valpo's roster is virtually redone and Powell has assembled an impressive coaching staff.

12. Valparaiso Beacons – Head Coach Roger Powell Jr2022-23 record: 11-21 overall, 5-15 in the MVC
New coaches bring in new rosters and Valparaiso is no different. Just three players with significant playing time return and Connor Barrett is the team's leading returning scorer at 4.1 points per game.
Powell's energy and experience will bode well in Northern Indiana. The fan base loves 'the Rev' from his days as a Bryce Drew assistant and he has taken the long view on recruiting. There are six freshmen on this year's team.
Point guard Darius DeAveiro is the single, experienced ball-handler but he'll have plenty of young players to mentor. Rookies, Sherman Weatherspoon IV and Jahari Williamson will vie for playing time. Barrett, Murray State transfer Jaxon Edwards and John A. Logan transfer Isaiah Stafford look to fill backcourt spots.
Canadian born Williamson was signed by the previous coaching staff and stayed after the hiring of Powell. His international experience playing for the Canadian youth team will help in his transition. Edwards is an explosive player out of St. Louis and Stafford, who previously played at Southern Indiana is an experienced player and winner.
Valpo improved its frontcourt size by adding 6'7 Central Michigan transfer Ola Ajiboye and two, 6'9 freshmen in Lucas Scroggins and Cooper Schwieger. Jerome Palm returns after appearing in 23 Beacons' contests. The 6'10 Netherlands native played just 14 minutes per game and averaged just 1.9 points, but is more talented than those numbers indicate.

Schwieger (Link Academy) has received high praise from Powell. He compared him to Gonzaga's Drew Timme and former Valpo great Alec Peters. 6'7 freshman Kaspar Sepp spent part of the summer playing for the Estonian national team.
If Lual Manyang can stay healthy, he may be 'diamond in the rough' this team needs. The 6'10 redshirt freshman was a top ten player in the State of New Jersey in 2022. After signing with Hofstra he was injured at sat out the season.
Expect some growing pains for this year's Valpo squad.[/i]

Yesterday at 2:27 PM      (9/25/2023)

Just returned from our 1400 mile trip to Valparaiso University. It was a wonderful trip and I have not laughed so much, or so hard in years. At times, it was hard to recognize and separate the real memories from all the BS.  Our minds are not what they used to be, and the alcohol consumed only added to the confusion.
We all came to the conclusion that we are are truly blessed to be healthy and talked about some of our fellow classmates who had passed,  but we have not forgotten.   Pictures below are of my basketball teammates who attended, our fraternity house (now condemned) and the beautiful Valpo chapel.

KENNETH KLEIN OBITUARY
Published by The Times on Mar. 22, 2023

Kenneth H. Klein, Ph.D.
Sept. 29, 1930 - Mar. 19, 2023

VALPARAISO - With heavy hearts we announce that Kenneth Henry Klein, passed away on March 19, 2023, at the age of 92, in Valparaiso, Indiana. As was his wish, he died peacefully in his home, with his loving family around him. A strong man, he put up one heck of a fight trying to recover from the massive stroke that he sustained on January 4, 2023.

Ken was born on September 29, 1930, in Springfield, Illinois, the second of two sons of Hans Otto Klein and Hilma Marie (Volle) Klein. Ken vividly remembered the hardships of the Depression and of WWII, as well as having been lovingly nourished in a deeply conservative (Missouri Synod) religious home and church-centered environment. He was named after his grandfather, Henry Adam Klein, an ordained Lutheran minister and President of Concordia Theological Seminary, Springfield, Illinois. Ken's education took him through Lutheran parochial elementary school, through Springfield High School, Washington University, the University of Chicago (Bachelor of Divinity), Chicago Lutheran Theological Seminary (Master of Theology), Mansfield College of Oxford University, Oxford England (thesis research) and Harvard University, where he earned a Ph.D. in "History and Philosophy of Religion" in 1965.

Ken is survived by his wife of 23 1/2 years, Lea Paulette Lorraine Shelemey, her two children, Denise Dalphond and Gregory Dalphond, and three step-grandchildren, Oliver Rotz, Peach Dalphond, and Earl Rotz. He is also survived by his first wife, Mary (Yuerhs) Klein, their two daughters, Jennifer Klein and Jessica Klein Freas (Rob Freas), and five grandchildren, Chayton Burkhart, Jimmy Burkhart, Christian Freas, Evelyn Freas, and Julian Freas. He was predeceased by his mother in 1944, by his father in 1977, and by his brother (Donald Edward Klein) in 2018.

In college, Ken double-majored in English and Psychology, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Beta Chapter, Missouri, 1952. He also dallied in athletics. He competed two years as a diver on the swimming team of Washington University and continued as a diver and gymnast at the University of Chicago. As a diver on the University of Chicago swimming team, he won the Chicago Intercollegiate Diving Championship in 1954. Far more important to him than athletics, Ken had the good fortune, in his sophomore year at Washington University, of taking an introductory course in philosophy under the not-yet world-famous Professor Huston Smith, who influenced his life in two ways; first, by personifying the discipline of philosophy, and second, by urging that he follow his undergraduate years with a more thorough study of theology at the University of Chicago. In addition to Huston Smith, Ken credits two philosophers at Harvard, Rogers Albriton and Paul Ziff, with turning his life around.

His graduate school years were both years of pleasure-his happiest times were the five summers he spent as a bellman on the S. S. North American, a cruise ship that plied the waters of the Great Lakes - and years of deep spiritual searching; his studies at the University of Chicago, Oxford University, and Harvard University brought profound challenges to the theological beliefs he had adopted as a youth. That searching, which he took seriously, lasted the rest of his life.

Ken came to Valparaiso University in response to a personal invitation of then-President O.P. Kretzmann, who was also a life-long friend of Ken's father. Ken spent his entire professional life teaching in the Philosophy Department of Valparaiso University. He came to V.U. in the spring of 1965 and retired, with the status of Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, in the spring of 1995. He cherishes his 30 years teaching in the philosophy department, where his main focus was logic, epistemology, metaphysics, Early Modern Philosophy (Descartes, Leibniz, Spinoza, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, and Kant) and the philosophy of religion. He regarded his teaching years as the best years of his life...the most challenging, the most productive, the most deeply satisfying.

In addition to his regular duties as faculty member, he did other things along the way: In 1967, he was chosen to select and train Valparaiso University's "College Bowl" team, an inter-university academic competition, broadcast each week on national TV, where Valpo's team won twice (and lost once). For two years, 1969-71, he was the first two-year Director of VU's Overseas Study Program in Cambridge, England. In 1995 he received the first Caterpillar award for "Excellence in Teaching." In that connection, and for three academic years funded by the Lilly Corporation, he founded and initiated the Teaching Resource Center at Valparaiso University, a program which strove to provide resources for the improvement of teaching. In 1968 he took a Sabbatical at the University of Wisconsin, where he revised and expanded his doctoral dissertation into a book - Positivism and Christianity: A Study of Theism and Verifiability - which was published by Martinus Nijhoff in 1977. For several years in the mid 1980's he was actively involved in "Philosophers Concerned for Peace," a sub-group of the American Philosophical Association, during those worrisome years when the USA and the Soviet Union were stockpiling nuclear weapons and the world was consumed with worry about the prospect of nuclear war. His involvement in that group resulted in his co-editing two more books, Issues in War and Peace and In the Interest of Peace, which were published by Longwood Academic in 1989 and 1990. He regrets his never having finished his still-unpublished manuscript on "free will." He took a four-year leave of absence (1975-'79) from V.U. to support his then wife and two small children (aged two and four) in Philadelphia, a period in which she earned an M.D. from the Medical College of Pennsylvania.

Since his retirement, Ken has enjoyed golf, gardening, and more than a hundred thousand miles of motorcycling all over the USA - "every state except Rhode Island," as well as deep into Canada. His post-retirement years have seen continued involvement in The Emeriti Book Club at V.U. and ReVU (Retirees of Valparaiso University) an organization which he helped organize at V.U. and has encouraged and nourished by his involvement in AROHE (Association of Retirement Organizations in Higher Education) a national organization devoted to the enrichment of the post-retirement years of faculty, administration and staff of colleges and universities across the country.

There will be a Visitation, conceived as a celebration of his life, at MOELLER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, in Valparaiso on Friday March 24, 2023, from 3:00 to 7:00 PM, and a Funeral Service at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at 10:00 AM. Ken will be buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery in the Klein family plot in Springfield, Illinois in the Spring.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hilltop House, Valparaiso University Psychology Department or Compassion & Choices.

Valpo Basketball / Arch Madness (MVC MBB Tournament)
February 27, 2023, 09:20:27 AM
Carried over from another thread:

BTW, The first home game for StL City SC is Saturday night, March 4th, 7:30 pm, during Arch Madness at their brand new stadium just down the street at Market Street and 21st. (Look towards the big Ferris Wheel) They will draw a full house--sold out (22,500)--with upper deck tickets having gone for $273 (against Charlotte FC). St Louis has been "soccer mad" since the early 1900's when Catholics came to St Louis in large numbers. Saint Louis U used to sell out every match and season tickets for StL City SC were reserved with deposits about 3 months after the team was announced.

StL City SC wins tonight in Austin 3 - 2 (Feb. 25) in first game ever.Late goal makes expansion St. Louis City a winner over Austin FC | National Post

I seem to remember that the new stadium's naming rights were bought by Centene Bank and will be Centene Stadium.

EDIT: Apparently Centene Bank withdrew it's name from the CITYPARK StadiumFormer names: Centene Stadium (February–October 2022)

Yes, it does seem to be a miracle for the football school from NE Ohio in the Mahoning Valley. They will be the number 1 seed in Indianapolis.

Bradley at Valpo MBB Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023  6:00 pm Athletics Recreation Center

Yes, it's a sneak attack!

Just how it feels to the Bradley MBB team when they suddenly get surprised by a 2 man very talented duo that gets help from not one but two other players to actually glide to a win by outscoring the Braves in the 1st half by 14 and then making the same mistakes they always do but winning by 1 in an exciting finish.

Why not?

Starting a day early. Is that a record for this season? Since I will be in Chicago Sunday morning I will be attending with a chance to win a conference game, a rare occurrence these days.

Ohio State lost to Michigan on Sunday, 77-69, as the Buckeyes fall to 11-12 on the season.
Where does Ohio State go from here?
Many Buckeyes fans appear to be done with their head coach, who might or might not be on the hot seat.

General Off Topic / Passing of Frank Squire
August 01, 2018, 06:56:55 AM
I just learned yesterday that the father of one of our formerly frequent posters on this message board and on previous versions of this board has passed away. I also found out by talking to others I know in Valparaiso that he also lost his mother this year. So it must be a very tough time for our friend and I hope that we can give our condolences here and show him how much we care for and miss him on this message board.

Frank Squire, who was a former barber on the VU campus, is the father of StlVUfan.

Valpo Basketball / Financing AC in the ARC
July 11, 2018, 11:07:35 PM
Once every year my friend from Florida (Ft Lauderdale area), Mr. Valpo on this board, although he has not posted anything in years but he reads everything, comes for a visit to Valpo and the campus. He loves to talk to anyone he can and strike up conversations about Valpo in general and most importantly the athletic teams and the most important team, MBB. He and I, along with some other friends have been observing the skill instruction seminars (remember, you don't call them practices) run by Coach Lottich last week and this week.

In one of our conversations Mr. Valpo asked MLB exactly how much money it would take to fund the installation of air conditioning in the ARC. The answer we got was $500,000. MLB also said that we need to get improvements done to the ARC in the next few years to make the Missouri Valley Conference happy with our facilities. The athletic dept did not feel this kind of urgency in the past to get these kind of improvements done to the ARC previously in the Horizon League.

Both Mr. Valpo and I and some others on this board have noticed that a lot of people on this board have asked for a way to donate directly to the athletic dept for a specific project. Here is your chance to donate to a specific project. MLB has stated that any donations that are designated for a specific project such as "AC for the ARC" will go directly to that project. You will need to put on the memo line or include a note with the check that the donation to the athletic dept is for the air conditioning in the Athletics Recreation Center. So let's go out and tell all our friends, relatives, neighbors and anybody you think will donate to the AC for the ARC cause to send their checks to

In Care of
Kris Sanders, Administrative Assistant
Athletics Recreation Center
1009 Union Street
Valparaiso, IN 46383

On the checks write "AC for the ARC" or something similar. Or write a note on what project you want to fund which in this case is air conditioning for the ARC.

Please pass the word on to as many people as you know. Nobody gives money to projects they don't know about and are not asked to give money directly to the project. If we don't ask how can people give? We truly need AC for the ARC.

Kris Sanders will be tabulating the amounts that come to the athletic dept for this AC for the ARC project.

I will try to keep in touch with her on a regular basis to report how this board is doing on raising money for the AC for the ARC project and get a report updated regularly on this thread.

Yes, it seems like a huge mountain of money to raise but if this board can start the climb up that mountain it's one area that the athletic dept does not have to put more time and effort into.

Let's do it! Put your money where your mouth is and send your donations directly to the athletic dept for this very important project.

General VU Discussion / Rest in Peace Mel Doering
March 14, 2018, 08:01:55 AM
I haven't been on this board much lately but I heard something yesterday that made me sad and thought was a great loss for the university and the athletic department in particular. I met Mel Doering while doing some research on VU when he was the university archivist. He was very knowledgeable about the history of Valparaiso University simply because he lived it. He and I have a connection that goes beyond the usual but also did not play that important of a role. There are others on this board that were much closer to him.

On Saturday, March 10, 2018 Melvin H. Doering died of heart complications at 11:07 p.m. in the ICU unit of St. Mary's Medical Center in Hobart, IN.

Mr. Doering donated his body to the Indiana University School of Medicine.

There will be a visitation at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 17 with a memorial service to follow at 12:00 noon at

General VU Discussion / 3D building coming down?
August 20, 2015, 03:43:08 PM
I noticed a couple days ago that a big piece of construction equipment that is used for demolition was parked in front of the old 3D building to the east of the Moeller Funeral Home. Does anyone know if there is a plan to tear down that building or are they just parking the equipment there for the time being?

How many FT's will Felder shoot against Felder on Sunday?

I will try to remember to lock the voting before I leave for the game on Sunday.

I've not seen that any of the schools' websites or the Challenge in Music City website are showing live video for these games. It looks like audio only.

Drake is 0-3 after losses to Bowling Green at Des Moines by 19, DePaul and Western Michigan (is it Wemisch?) on the road by 18 and 16 respectively.

The Bulldogs are low on the totem pole in the MO-Valley.

Drake takes on IUPUI at the Knapp Center in Des Moines on Tuesday before heading to Nashville. That game will help us evaluate our chances but so far Valpo's chances of winning lean heavily in our favor.

Murray State is the quasi host of this Challenge in Music City event as they play the OVC tournament every year in the Nashville Municipal Auditorium. Although to Murray it's OVC members Belmont and Tenn State that are actually in Nashville.

I'm really trying to motivate myself to get up and go but I just can't. I'll try to get up at 8:15  and watch it.

I started this thread to try and help my motivation but it didn't work.

Can you keep it down so I can sleep?

The Arkansas-Pine Bluff athletics website is showing the game as 5:00 p.m. and not 3:30 p.m. Hope they are wrong because the 3 1/2 hour drive back around 7:30 p.m. sounds like a long day. Valpo's website has 3:30 p.m. still.

General VU Discussion / Parking garage and sidewalk pics
November 10, 2014, 06:01:39 PM

Junction of new sidewalk and somewhat new sidewalk that runs from the old hospital laundry building towards Brown Field.

The sidewalk goes straight towards the pit area (high jump, etc) of the track and then curves around to the right (facing the ARC) before ending at the parking lot entrance.

Looking at the modular offices that were behind the old school building (old Immanuel school) that was torn down. You can see the beginning/end of the new sidewalk across from east parking garage driveway (entrance).

Elevator door-----only the first floor is available for parking. There really is nothing there but concrete. Not exciting at all.

The legend of Virgil Sweet and the Valpo Free Throw Method grows as the Times does another write up. Back in the day the basketball team would sometimes eat their lunches at the free throw line. Although nothing about how to put on a pair of athletic socks. I was disappointed about that.

Valpo Basketball / David Chadwick
March 19, 2014, 04:39:11 AM
I heard a rumor at the Columbia/CIT game that David Chadwick, due to medical issues, will not be on the MBB team next year. I understand his medical issues are not like Alex Rossi's issues but more to do with actual bone on bone issues. They are trying to find a non-athletic scholarship for him, much like they did for Australian Cameron Witt.

So that does open up an athletic scholarship that could be used for a big man, although there were two scholarships available. This will open up a third scholarship.

If I was a Milwaukee fan I sure would be upset that Jordan Aaron has already missed several three pointers. How is Milwaukee supposed to win if Aaron takes so many shots and misses most of them. Who cares that the Panthers are on the way to making the NCAA tournament by leading Wright St 19-7 about halfway through the first half. That Jordan just shoots too much!

Looks like Valpo will be playing for only 3rd place and a bye in the HL tourney.

EDIT: Sorry, I had wrong place. Valpo can play for 3rd place not just 4th place.

Youngstown was able to pull out victories over UIC and Milwaukee at the Beeghley Center, barely. I don't see them winning on the road but you never know. So much depends on which officials show up to call the game which makes it so frustrating for everyone.

I believe GB is more scared of losing this game than Valpo.  Valpo 80, GB 74.

Panthers knock off Crusaders by 7 but it will be a very close game until Valpo has to foul. Unfortunately the Brown & Gold commit many turnovers(+16) and miss needed FT's (9 or more). The biggest problem is that no one except Peters steps up for Dority when LVD scores less than 10.

Oh yeah!

QuoteHere's kind of a wild prediction with several surprises.

@ UIC  W
UDM  L
OU  W

@ UWM  L
@ UWGB  W
YSU  L
@ WSU  W
CSU  W

QuoteI'm predicting a Valpo win by 5 points.

LaVonte will bounce back and Peters will score more than 10. It will be the defense against Bader and Mondy that will make the difference between the Crusaders loss at the O'rena and this game.

If I can get out of my neighborhood by Friday I plan to go to the game. Unfortunately for the Raiders their path for winning on the road hasn't been cleared yet either. They'll have to play at UIC before that happens.

Looking at the new banner on this website I was thinking about being in a bad neighborhood which member of the Crusader men's team would I avoid if they were staring at me like they do in that banner. I don't want to cast aspersions on anyone here. I'm just having fun.

My answer is LaVonte because he has the most changed look from his usual jovial self. I had to look harder to make sure it was really him.

On The Horizon / HLN Quality
December 21, 2013, 02:32:16 PM
Is it my computer or has the HLN broadcasts become very fuzzy. I watched EMU at Oakland and Fairfield at Green Bay games and the screens were fuzzy the whole games. When I switched to Murray State vs Western KY on ESPN 3 it came into focus soon after tuning in. Is anybody else having this issue?

Ohio lost to Ohio State by 10 in Columbus. Will Valpo find the skill and mental toughness to rebound and beat the Bobcats in Athens?

Nice 2-1 overtime win for the men's soccer team over IUPUI Friday night.

After giving up a goal in the first half on a defensive lapse despite controlling possession most of the first half, the Crusader men scored a late goal with 7 minutes to go in the 2nd half and the winner with less than 4 minutes to go in the 2nd overtime. It was a very exciting win and showed how relentless this Valpo men's soccer team is.

I now believe that they actually don't lose.

This story is from the IUPUI website.

http://www.iupuijags.com/news/2013/9/13/MSOC_0913130626.aspx

The host Crusaders pulled even on a goal from Todd Vervynckt in the 82nd minute and stole the win with a Nick Suker goal in the 106th minute, moving the Jaguars' losing skid to four straight.

Valpo enjoyed a 22-11 shot advantage while the Jaguars were whistled for 25 fouls and drew just 13 whistles.

Crusaders Defeat Jaguars in Dramatic Fashion

"First off, it was an exciting game – we had a really great crowd for our first home game of the season, we want to thank everyone for coming out tonight and giving us support at home.  The environment was electric and you could see how our guys were able to feed off of that positive energy," said head coach Mike Avery.  "I think the fans definitely got their money's worth tonight."

Artis Cleveland Transfers to Oakland

Artis Cleveland joins the men's basketball team.

Sept. 11, 2013

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Oakland men's basketball team has added Artis Cleveland to the roster, announced head coach Greg Kampe on Wednesday. Cleveland (6-10, 207) attended Mississippi Valley State for the summer term, but decided to transfer to OU in late August.

"We are happy to have Artis (Cleveland) join the program," said Kampe. "We have watched him develop over the years and at 6-foot-10, his best days are ahead of him. He's a good student and a great kid."

Cleveland grew up in Detroit before moving to Birmingham, Ala. his sophomore season. He attended Wenonah High School where he helped lead the Dragons to back-to-back Class 5A state championships. Cleveland averaged 6.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocked shots per game during his senior season.

After receiving offers from Alabama A&M, Buffalo, Seattle, Tennessee-Martin, Western Carolina and Youngstown State, Cleveland decided on Mississippi Valley State. After a summer term and a coaching change, Cleveland made a decision to attend Oakland.

Due to the NCAA transfer rule, Cleveland will have to sit out the 2013-14 season.

Check it out! Also remember that what the NCAA calls a second round game is what many others call a first round game.
