Valpo Basketball / Drake has a cool uni selection
January 21, 2024, 09:55:11 AM
And Valpo should consider this! I like the Des Moines uni as they smoked Evansville by 49.

Valpo Basketball / Eugene Parker for Hall of Fame
November 01, 2023, 11:35:33 AM
Eugene Parker needs to be properly honored at Valpo. It is an outrage that this had not been. A great person and leader. He was a pioneer in American minority athletics and did more for sport than Jon Steinbrecher, who is in the Hall of Fame, ever did.

I am seeing a friend tomorrow at Valpo and will cruise around some. I haven't been on campus since 2019. Not sure what I will see but should be fun!

Valpo Basketball / 6 PM start times in the MVC
January 21, 2023, 10:48:26 AM
I noticed many games in the MVC start at 6 PM. Is this for travel purposes?

This 6 PM time may be inconvenient to fans who want dinner and drinks before the game. But you could have dinner and drinks after the game.

No big deal, just curious and I find the time to be odd.

General VU Discussion / Brainstorm to make cash for Valpo
December 31, 2022, 10:00:21 AM
With Valpo's identity, what can they do to increase revenue? Maybe a Lutheran/Christian TV network? Maybe something like Osteen but genuine?

Let's be creative. Everything is on the table for discussion.

These videos are frequent on YouTube, TicToc, you name it. student with truly outstanding credentials such as a 4.3 GPA out of 4, 1500 SAT, activities galore, national merit finalist, job, service, etc., are getting rejected consistent by elite academic schools like Yale, Duke, Northwestern, UC Berkeley, MIT, Rice, Harvard, Stanford, USC(?) Vanderbilt, etc. the admission criteria for these schools is a real crapshoot.

Also, as a proud USC alum, I am dumbfounded how their academic standards have become so stringent of late.

Sports Talk / Northwest Missouri State dynasty

https://www.ncaa.com/live-updates/basketball-men/d2/northwest-missouri-state-wins-third-straight-national-championship

The coach has been absolutely phenomenal - four D2 national titles in 5 years. Watching this game, I noticed how composed this team was and how well they control tempo.

The program, D2 or not, deserves respect as they would certainly defeat many D1 programs. This coach is likely going on bigger things - maybe Valpo needs to take a look and make a change.

Around the Valley / Hypothetical question
November 20, 2021, 06:45:15 AM
Let me bring up this scenario just for conversation sakes  since schools like Marquette and North Dakota experienced this when changing team names for cultural sensitivity.

Let's suppose a Valpo big money donor will make a significant, major impact financial donation to upgrade the ARC or even toward a new facility. Let's say the donation is $25M - righteous bucks. The donor will provide this generous contribution given that Valpo changes their name back to Crusaders.

What should Valpo do and what would Valpo do?

Valpo Football / Congrats to Robert Washington
November 07, 2021, 07:08:09 AM
An outstanding performance by Robert Washington over Presbyterian received national recognition. Robert received a helmet sticker on ESPN college game day final! ESPN did not have a Valpo helmet so they placed his sticker on a generic college game day helmet. Considering these stickers are usually given to outstanding performances on major college teams, this is quite an accomplishment. Congrats Robert, your efforts and results are making Valpo proud.

General VU Discussion / Wearing Valpo Crusader wear
October 31, 2021, 03:20:23 PM
If I go to the Valpo campus or a sporting event and wear something with "Crusaders" or have the Crusader mascot on it, will I take grief or be asked to remove it?

The light enablers had a week off. Does Fox have the genius and mojo to turn it around?  I'm going half full this week - Valpo wins 19-17. Dayton is weak this year.

Valpo Football / Bye week for the Beakers

As they reflect, chill, and rebuild, where do they need to focus? Where do you see these guys finish by the end of the year?

Also, what changes need to be made regarding talent, coaching, etc. ?

Valpo Basketball / Northwest Missouri State
March 27, 2021, 12:44:32 PM
Due to that my daughter goes there, I am watching Northwest Missouri State blowing out West Texas A&M in the Division 2 title game. These guys are simply awesome and so well coached. 3 National Titles in 4 years. They would beat a lot of Division 1 teams.

Valpo Football / Restructure to air raid offense
September 27, 2020, 09:45:20 AM
Ok, the football team has time to restructure and be creative and discover new concepts - how about an air raid offense ala Mike Leach once we find a QB who can accommodate this? Just for fun.

With the happenings from the Ivy League and the power 5 conferences, will Valpo have football this fall? Perhaps we will know more by the end of the month, but moving this forward will be a challenge. As a country, for whatever circumstances,  we really failed in social distancing and quarantine practices, leading us to the probability of no football this fall.

Valpo Football / Breaking! Valpo football last decade
January 13, 2020, 08:30:35 PM

Valpo Football / North Dakota State
December 21, 2019, 03:49:24 PM
I am watching these guys right now against Montana State, and I hope Valpo is getting a decent paycheck from the Bison. I think the Bison would finish at least 8th in the Big 10 and maybe the top 2 in the MAC!

Sports Talk / Stephen F. Austin hoops
November 27, 2019, 06:49:00 AM
What a phenomenal win and a nice payout for the Lumberjacks. I have been watching these guys for awhile as my wife went to school there, and I have always been impressed with how well coached they are and how they move the ball around. OK, the Southland is a weak conference and no one knows where Nacadoches is, but Valpo coaching should watch some film on these guys.

Valpo Football / Fox's promotion to head coach
September 22, 2019, 03:09:54 PM
A majority of employees always want to find the opportunity to get promoted, make more money and take on more responsibility. Sometimes these jobs are open for some reason, and you find out a) you are a square in a round hole, or b) it is a opportunity you may wish you did not pursue. I am sure this has happened to some on this board, including myself. Even 3 games into the season, I am a little concerned if Coach Fox is having second thoughts about taking this difficult job. The overall university apathy and lack of commitment to football requires someone special to enable success.

Sports Talk / College Football at 150

ESPN has a excellent show on college football celebrating 150 years. Wow, football was a very vicious sport early on! Also, some great clips on Woody Hayes and Charles White.

We need cash for various athletic needs, so why not find a proud beer sponsor? Since Valpo has a German Lutheran heritage, how about Leinenkugel? The Leinie Center has a nice ring to it.

General VU Discussion / Commencement Speaker

I have been searching and cannot find who will be the commencement speaker. The Valpo site is not listing this currently.

This came out of the Other Sports board. I am wondering why Valpo is having trouble with insufficient cash. Are they budgeting appropriately? are they being frugal to a high extent? Could it be the new tax code where you need more deductions to itemize?

Sports Talk / Lynn Swann's sensitivity as USC AD
January 26, 2019, 11:32:06 AM
I think Lynn Swann could have been handled this situation much better as the Song Girls for decades have been a huge part of USC tradition of school spirit and athletic excellence.

Valpo Basketball / Turn back the clock
January 03, 2019, 03:31:36 PM
Suggestion box entry:

Have a game with throwback unis from the late 70s-early 80s. Have the game at Hilltop if feasible. and for those who remember, have the Michael Stanley Band play after the game! bring back old cheer unis, Earth Wind and Fire music from the pep band, etc.

Valpo Football / Iowa State needs an opponent for Dec. 1
November 18, 2018, 01:47:34 PM
Iowa state had to cancel their game against South Dakota State in September due to storms in Ames. For a makeup game, they scheduled Incarnate Word, but they made the FCS playoffs. It is a $300000 payout, so should  Valpo make a call?

And they are now serving...yep...beer!

Time for Valpo join the millennium.

Sports Talk / Big3 basketball

I watched the Big3 basketball league opener and I have to admit I really liked it. The basketball was actually pretty good and entertaining, the players showed joy and passion, and I liked the pace of the game. I think Ice Cube has something good going on!

Sports Talk / Tears
March 31, 2018, 08:37:05 AM
I love sports as much as anybody, and at times I get into the games. The NCAA tournament has been outstanding and dramatic. Great moments. However, what I question and laugh about are these fans crying when their their team is getting defeated. When Virginia lost to UMBC, seeing their fans weep as their beloved Vols got trounced was ridiculas. Last night in a phenomenal women's semi between Notre Dame and UConn, UConn fans were crying at the end - seriously, I mean how can their lives be any worse if they cannot win their 12th national championship? This sport is great drama, but some people need a reality check.

Valpo Basketball / Antti Nikkila
November 16, 2017, 02:03:26 PM
I am in Finland on a business trip and our teams are having a wonderful dinner in Tampere. The leader talks about basketball and his daughter playing in a local league. So after a good basketball discussion,  yours truly brings up that Antti  Nikkila, a Tampere native and Valpo center, played at my undergrad alma mater. He mentions that his daughter and Antti's daughter play on the same league team and he sees him often. Small world!

Sports Talk / Ric Flair 30 for 30
November 04, 2017, 09:19:37 AM
I am really looking forward to seeing this 30 for 30 documentary on ESPN. They are usually excellent, and Flair was a very flamboyant personality who had elevated professional wrestling and had an effect on sports. Strangely, many athletes respect and idolize him.

Valpo Football / The inept Pioneer conference
October 22, 2017, 11:14:53 AM
I was looking at the Sagarin ratings and noticed that Valpo is out of the bottom ten for the first time in awhile! That's great and I guess this shows progress. However, there are many Pioneer conference teams at the bottom in the Sagarin ratings, indicating a very weak and possibly weakest conference in college football.

General Off Topic / the Vietnam War by Ken Burns on PBS
September 18, 2017, 06:36:59 AM
I watched the first episode of this documentary and it was outstanding. The complex situation of Vietnam leading up to the war was very interesting and a part of history I was naive about. Did any of you watch this and have comments?

Valpo Basketball / Jubril Adekoya and the Honor Council
December 30, 2016, 10:16:30 AM
I do not know what will happen to Jubril Adekoya. He may be guilty, he may not be guilty - I have no idea. but 2 issues really bother me with the honor council based on what I am reading.

First, the honor council is run like a French government - you are guilty until you are proven innocent. Anyone can report an issue confidentially and you are guilty. This person can have a vendetta against you - maybe an ex-partner in a relationship, rivaling fraternities and sororities trying to get the better end for some bogus superiority, one student jealous or antagonistic against another. But someone can report anything and you are automaticially guilty. That is wrong and can lead to a lawsuit. Also, are there any consequences for those making a unethical report?

Second, and more significant for this situation - if the honor council is a very significant part of how Valpo is operated, then why should Jubril Adekoya wait until the start of the spring semester for a decision to be made? if the report occurs at the end of the spring semester, why should the indicted student have to wait for the start of the fall semester? I understand student and professors are involved and it is a holiday break, but a person's integrity and career is at stake, and a decision should be made in a more prompt manner. If the honor council is important, Some honor council mentors, students, leaders and whoever should be made available to promptly assess and make decisions for situations like these. This should also apply to anyone.
