Hello all Valpo fans, I noticed that due to limited press there is very little Valpo football talk over the winter and I would like to change that. I will be writing a spring preview for each position. Also any feedback or comments will be very appreciated by the author. So to begin I'll start with arguably our most exciting position quarterback.

Recap: In 2016 the quarterback play was oddly identical from 2016. The offense threw for an additional 200 yards and two extra scores. However factor in that the College of Faith game statistics did not count and the numbers are almost the same per game. Coach Cecc chose not to name a starter at the beginning of preseason with Ryan Clarke being the logical choice. Jimmy Seewald took over for an injured Clarke and had a huge five touchdown performance against Trinity International. Clarke was the quarterback in the Davidson win and Seewald was the quarterback in the Jacksonville, Stetson, and Trinity International wins. Moving forward there may be a slight competition but it seems Jimmy Seewald may have on the job.

The Starter(s)

#19 Jimmy Seewald SO.: A very solid rookie campaign which saw orchestrate three wins which is huge for any Valpo quarterback let alone a freshman. The offense was really clicking with him under center and he seems as the likely starter moving into spring. He has NFL size and a good arm, it will be fun watching him develop.

#16 Ryan Clarke SR.: A great leader and has four years of experience in the offense. Inconsistent on his throws yet still is 2-0 against Davidson as a starter. Also has the ability to be the long snapper if not named the quarterback. He is too good of an athlete to leave off of the field. Will surely be the #1 backup if not the starter next year.

Reserves

#7 Dalton Stokes RSJR.: Was an excellent recruiting grab for the staff in their first class. The 8A player of the year in Florida and seemed like a surefire multi year starter. Was injured his first season taking a redshirt as he missed most of camp. Named the starter the following spring and started the Western Kentucky and Sacred Heart game before being injured for the season. Last year battled another injury and played sparingly. A good mobile quarterback but durability has been an issue. Due to him being more mobile than the two starters there could be certain packages he is used for next year.

Transfer

#14 Joe Mullen RSSO: Really an unknown commodity. Went to the same high school as Valpo grad and former quarterback Ben Lehman. Did not appear in a game for Tiffin University. Posted really high passing yards for a good Illinois team. Will most likely be up for playing time in '18 and '19

Redshirts

#13 Grant Papenfuss RSFR: Solid drop back passer, redshirted to maintain an additional year of eligibility. Make quick throws and reads. Would not be surprised to see him on the field somewhere down the line. High School teammate of runningback Kyle Cartales.

#15 Chris Duncan RSFR: Very long and lengthy. Odds are he's the most mobile of all the quarterbacks. Ran between the tackles in his high school film and could be used like Stokes in certain packages next year.

Welcome to the board.  As a former player, I would nothing better than to see Valpo win a PFL title.  I have an autographed ball from the 2003 season and it has gathered way to much dust. Time to succeed.  Thanks for your insights.  I presume you are associated with the team in some capacity?
Season Results: CBI/CIT: 2008, 2011, 2014  NIT: 2003,2012, 2016(Championship Game) 2017   NCAA: 1962,1966,1967,1969,1973,1996,1997,1998 (Sweet Sixteen),1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2013 and 2015

valpofb16

I am not currently associated with the team I am a large fan of the program. The next segment in the preview will be running backs.

Recap: The running game in 2015 was extremely abysmal despite having mainstays such as Jake Hutson, Brandon Hall, and Gayson Bastin returning. The team only ran for a thousand yards and five touchdowns. Hutson and Hall were lost to graduation while Bastin had to stop playing due to concussions. Enter ex slot receiver Jarrett Morgan and four freshman and the stats jump to 1462 yards and 14 touchdowns. While these numbers are not going to set the world on fire it is a vast improvement on the year prior.

Graduated

#25 Grayson Bastin: I felt like Grayson should be mentioned here due to his loss being for injury. He had a total of 418 yards and two rushing touchdowns in the 2014 campaign. He was a primary return specialist in '13.

#45 Kenny Floyd: Played two games. Has another year of eligibility and could very well return. Power back and a great leader.

Starter

#10 Jarrett Morgan SR: Recruited as a defensive back, made a big mark in special teams. Blocked four kicks his rookie year and lead the nation in yards per kickoff return. Moved from defensive back to slot receiver and then finally moved to running back in the tail end of '15. Improved rushing totals from 112yds/2tds in '15 to 576yds/2tds in '16. Also used in passing games after having 9 yards last year he had 285 rec. yds and 3 rec. touchdowns. Big play ability, had a long run of 52 yards last year. Depending on durability and progression of offensive line he could have one of the better rushing years since Jeff Horton.

Rotation

#32 Cody Boxrucker SO: Power back often brought in for goal line and short chain situations. Had 7 touchdowns and 141 yards but only 2.9 yds/carry. Would like to see that number improve. Was not used in space often but did his job well of punching the ball in on the goal line.

#44 Kyle Cartales SO: The lightning to Boxrucker's thunder, the two made a great running back duo regularly in relief of Morgan. Cartales' game is very comparable to Morgan's as he is more of a speed back. He had 237 yds rushing and his average per carry was only .1 less than Morgan's. He also had 73 yards receiving and a touchdown. Look for him to be the down and distant back after Morgan.

#80 Austin Petrie SO: Appeared in eight games primarily on special teams. Rotated between running back and receiver on the year. A combination of speed and strength brings a bit of both to the table. Appeared against Dayton at running back due to injuries. Averaged over five yards a carry in the contest and scored two rushing touchdowns late. Finished the game with 76 yards. He will likely see more time next year either at wide receiver or at running back.

#21 Elias Earley RSSO: Recruited as a slot receiver moved to running back into spring due to injury. Appeared to be the third back early on in the season but did not appear after the third game of the season. Very fast, despite his size his speed makes up for it. May move back to receiver in the spring. Still managed 41 yds rushing and over five yards a carry in limited action.

VU2624

OUTstanding writeups so far. One thing to consider moving forward in your analysis is that the biggest jump in improvement is typically from freshman to sophomore year and thus from the final game of freshman year to the spring game you will see some guys really step up and the depth chart may not be what anyone thought it would be prior spring practice.

This will be particularly true with the QBs. I think Seewald's a good bet to go into spring ball as the #1 however I wouldn't be surprised if one of the guys who did not take a snap last season challenges him by the time the 2017 season starts. It will be fun to watch in the spring.

As a point of info, both J. Morgan and E. Earley were RBs in HS although they probably lined up in the slot from time to time.

Much of the foundation for coaching decisions in Spring ball is who separates themselves from the pack in off-season drills and the weight room. 2624 alluded to that in terms of the jump between freshman year and sophomore year.  The 2016 freshman class played a role without the benefit of a year-round college program under their belt. But also true is the work mentality of reserves compared to starters.  Now's the time to push the incumbents a bit and compete before April.

Another motivator for current players is the quality of the incoming class of 2017.  Although they haven't played a down of college football, good HS resumes can spur additional effort on the part of the current players.

This will all make for overall program improvement and rule out complacency.  And speaking of foundations, in assessing the progress of the program, we should not dismiss the more intangible elements like depth development, strength improvement, etc.  I would suggest that, as opposed to the past, when, due to injury or poor performance, substitutions were made during 2016, the drop-off in competitiveness was not as glaring as in the 4 years prior to Cecchini and even during his tenure so far, better between 2015 and 2016.  No basis for that other than observation.

IndyValpo

Excellent, I look forward to the remaining position analysis.

valpofb16

The next positions covered will be the Tight End/H-back positions.

Recap: In '14 the tight end position was held by sophomore Brett Fox and the committee of Bryce Dempsey and Aaron Brunner. Looking to get longer and lengthier the coaches brought in receiving tight end Mason Sutter in '15 and also Florida native Griffin Norberg and the two have started their entire careers for the Crusaders.

Graduated

#27 Brett Fox: One of the few from his class that did not redshirt his freshman year. Bulky tight end and a good blocker played in six games his freshman year and started his sophomore year. He fell out of the rotation in '15 due to injury and only played 2 games. In '16 played in all 11 games primarily on special teams.

Starters

#2 Griffin Norberg JR: Preseason All PFL Team Griffin Norberg took over the starting spot from '14 starter Spenser Pennington who transferred. He is more of a receiving back who gets very few carries. His freshman year had 138 rec. yds and 2 rec. tds. Those numbers improved to 244 rec. yards and 2 rec. tds. While he did not have an all-conference season his improvement and involvement was noticed in the offense. Look for similar numbers next season as Catrine, Rene, and Morgan look to be the focal points of the offense.

#84 Mason Sutter JR: Starter right off the bat in his career as the staff wanted another receiving threat in the offense. Extremely tall and lengthy if he gains the necessary weight has all conference written all over him. Had modest numbers as a freshman with only 101 rec. yds and 1 rec. td's. He doubled those numbers last year going for 230 rec. yds and 2 rec. tds. Expect a significant jump heading into year three for the Crusaders.

Rotation

#87 Martin Petruf SO: Excellent size for a tight end prospect. Played in all eleven games as a freshman which is a great sign. Quality depth and could potentially challenge for more snaps for the offense. Had 3 receptions for 34 yards. Potentially could play at the same time as Sutter in double tight situations due to Sutter's athleticism.

Redshirts

#81 Brannen Martin RSFR: A true blocking H-back who can develop into a receiving threat. Was a four year letter winner for powerhouse Cincinnati Elder which in itself is extremely impressive. Could be an excellent blocking back in goal line and short yardage situation. Odds are he will see the field at some point next season.

#84 Thomas Hassel RSFR: A slight receiving tight end prospect at 185 pounds. Has a similar frame to Mason Sutter his freshman year and should see a large increase in weight. Could be a sleeper at tight end next season however he will only be a freshman on the field next season therefore has a great amount of time to develop. Will likely split time with Petruf upon Sutter's graduation.

This out of left field but what the heck.......

The way the QB situation is unfolding, if Jimmy Seewald does get the nod as starter because of Ryan's inconsistent performance at QB, being a senior, backup QB would not be the greatest position for Ryan.  And further, if that were to be the case,  the development of the young QBs behind them would suffer as well.

Ryan's a good football player who needs to see the field a lot more than a backup QB would.  At 6'5" - 225, Ryan is a good sized, athletic football player.  He's demonstrated some toughness on special teams as our long snapper as a freshman.  His three years as a QB also has given him a very good understanding of the coverages we have faced in opponents' secondaries -- and the reads and how to run routes to beat them.  I don't know anything about his speed.  But I have to believe he has good eye-hand coordination in order to play at QB.      Do ya see where I am headed?  I think he'd make a very good true TE (not H-Back) who could flex outside or align inside.  I'd also believe that given the choice of playing backup vs. seeing the field more by becoming part of the TE rotation, he'd select the latter to finish his VU football career.  Regardless, I believe he will be the long snapper again too, as I think Jonathan Coyle was a RS-JR. and might take his degree and not return.

VU2624

Just to reinforce the LS issue...Ryan Clarke was the LS his freshman year. It's an idea which makes a lot of sense(switch to TE) assuming the other QBs advance.

valpofb16

I recognize both the above points however there are some things to look at

-If Coyne does not return him or DE Mike Wheeler will 100% be the long snapper
-Maybe in '07-'14 Valpo a good athlete could simply switch positions and see the field however, This is a major testament to the program and staff, That is no longer the case, there are two solid tight ends and two prospects without a spring. That's four legitimate offered players who did not leave the program after a season. This is also the case at most other positions now.
-Having a four year quarterback in the system is something not many teams will be able to rely on with injury. Actually looking through no team really has that in the PFL. Let alone one who has stayed a summer and has starting experience.
- Having played with Ryan i know he's a competitor and will be willing to help the team to the best of his abilities and he'll put in the work. Also Coach Cecc has not named Jimmy the starter next season so Ryan will spend the next nine months trying to become Valpo's starting quarterback.

Bottom Line: If we were starving for talent like years prior I could see it, however the program has taken about 20 steps forward in the last 18-22 months. Scott Staal was a back up and Coach C loved having a four year reliable player that understood the playbook behind a sophomore quarterback. If Seewald is named the starter and gets injured I would feel very comfortable with Clarke going into a game opposed to an unproven RSFR

VULB#62

It was a left field (pulled out of my back pocket or that general area) comment......   Respect your insider knowledge.  Like the fact that the starter to reserve gap is closing as you say.  Like that depth is finally showing itself.  Like I said:  Just trying to find the best combination of players to go 22+ deep on offense with a proven football player who has a good attitude.  Butcha never know......

I still worry about stunting (or loss through transfer) of the younger backup QBs.

Regarding your insider knowledge:  please stay active on this part of the board.  We fly pretty blind here and any credible knowledge is helpful and appreciated.

valpofb16

The next position focused on in the preview will be Offensive Tackle.

Recap: Having all conference HM left tackle Brian Lang that position was one of strength for the Crusaders. However with Terrance Roberts going down for the season with injury in game one, Sophomore Shannon Taliaferro and RSFR Andrew Lundberg held down the fort at right tackle. With a large improvement in the running game and a moderate one in the passing game. A casual fan would have to assume the maturity of the offensive line is a big reason for this.

Graduation

#74 Brian Lang Redshirted as a freshman in '13, a very technically sound tackle saw solid playing time at both tackles over the next three seasons. Played in 6 games in '14 working his way into the rotation. In '15 started in nine games at tackle becoming a mainstay on the offensive line. He was a starter and captain for the '16 campaign and started in 8 contests. Has an additional year of eligibility which all signs point to him not taking. However the offensive line coach tweeted him and RSJR Connor Rettig hinting they may be back. This would be a massive step for the program.

Awards:

'16: All PFL HM, First Team Academic All PFL
'15: First Team Academic All PFL

Starters

#77 Terrance Roberts RSSO: A massive individual standing 6'4 and weighing 335 pounds. Was said to look in incredible shape coming into fall. A part of the rotation as a freshman in '15 having played in 6 games. Named the starter heading into '16 until tearing his knee up in the Northern Illinois game. Received a medical red-shirt for the season looks to be a starter in '17

#75 Shannon Taliaferro JR: Recruited as a guard and also a part of the rotation as a freshman due to injury in '15. Ended up playing in 5 games in his rookie campaign. Moved to tackle out of necessity due to injury after the Roberts injury. Played in 7 games in his sophomore campaign and received praise in the end of the year wrap up from Coach C. Could very well play guard next year depending on who his healthy coming into camp.

#60 Andrew Lundberg RSSO: In '15 when the offense line mostly contained freshman the coaching staff was able to pull off a sly move and redshirt Lundberg. He has great size at 6'5 and 280 and played pretty solid in his 8 appearances this season. Depending on Lang coming back and Taliaferro's position he could be a starter next season in only his sophomore year of eligibility.

Rotation

#76 Alex Cotton RSSO: A smaller tackle than Roberts and Lundberg only measuring at 6'2. Was listed in the two deep all season but was also behind all-conference hm Brian Lang. Lundberg was also able to play the left tackle position as well. Played in two games in his freshman year of eligibility and could see more action moving forward.

Redshirts

#71 Bryce Biggs RSFR: A great sized prospect at 6'4, 265. Played good high school competition in Florida, teammate of Ryan Dugan. Looks to be an excellent prospect in upcoming seasons and given his pedigree could move his way up in the depth chart. Another testament to the program as there is no way this type of player would have been redshirted in years prior. This is a significant sign of improvement in the program.

VULB#62

Great to see the next installment. Interesting and appreciated that you are going OL position by position.  FWIW, it would be helpful if you always include ht and wt.

Over the past 7 years, the OL (as well as the DL) were characterized as being smaller and not as strong as most opponents. In the last 3 years, two positives have emerged however:  fewer line-related mistakes/penalties and, for the OL, a much improved ability to protect our passers (i.e., fewer sacks allowed).  IMO, this OL unit is still a work in progress but headed in the right direction. We appear to be signing bigger young men to NLIs.  Now we have make these guys stronger and quicker to match up better with their PFL opponents. That happens in the off-season and in the weight room. A nice thing is that so many of our players are intelligent students, so the 'smarts' part of the game is not an issue.

valpofb16

Wide Receiver:

Recap: In '14 Wide Receiver was a large area of strength for the Crusaders with names like Cassara, Kuramata, Warren, Taibi, Gladney, and Etzler. Due to graduation and attrition the Crusaders returned none of those names the following spring. Ryan Shea was the returning leading receiver but was better used in the slot. Moving Tim Foley from safety and Frank Catrine from runningback were moves made to stop the bleeding. Also the Crusaders brought in a plethora of freshman receivers to help. With a porous '15 many thought Jean Rene, Ryan Moore, Frank Catrine, and Ryan Shea would have an improved year. However Catrine started off hurt, Moore ended up hurt and the group put together almost an identical per game average in '16.

Graduated:

#9 Ryan Shea 5'11 180: A RS in '13. Came on for an injured Andrew Cassara in '14 ending up with 195 receiving yards and a touchdown. Regressed in '15 only accounting for 117 yds and a receiving touchdown after major expectations. Had only 104 rec. yards in '16. Has an additional year of eligibility but not expected to return for a fifth year.

#26 Tim Foley 5'11 185: Redshirted as a safety in the '13 campaign. Played defensive back in '14 appearing in two games with a tackle at Missouri Baptist. Moved to wide receiver in '15 spring. Played in two games in '15 primarily on special teams and two games again in '16 on special teams. Also has another year of eligibility however not expected back.

#25 Denzell Conway 5'11 205: Appeared in 9 games as a true freshman at runningback in '13. Had 305 total yards and a rushing and receiving touchdown. Fell out of rotation with the coaches in '14 moving to wide receiver. Only appeared in 2 games then transferred to Lindenwood in '15. Transferred back to Valparaiso prior to '16 season but suffered a season ending ankle injury. Of the three RSJR receivers, he is the most likely to return.

Starters

#30 Frank Catrine 6'0 205 SR: Appeared in 11 games as a rookie in '14 at runningback. Had 84 rushing yards and a rush touchdown. Also added 113 rec yards on the year. Moved to WR in Spring '15 out of need. Was injured a bit as a sophomore in '15 missing 2 games. Still managed 435 receiving yards and also 3 rec touchdowns. In '16 started year injured but increased receiving yards to 496 and again had three touchdowns. Blew a run out the gate for 72 yards and a touchdown in a wildcat formation against Jacksonville.
'16: HM All PFL

#1 Jean Rene 5'9 170 JR: A great rookie campaign in '15 leading the team in receiving with 456 and five receiving touchdowns. Started off his sophomore year hot then extremely cooled down as defenses were keying on him and Catrine returned from injury. Finished '16 with an almost identical season of 453 rec yards and 5 rec touchdowns. Him and Catrine could see a massive jump in numbers next year depending on Seewald's progression.

#8 Ryan Moore 6'1 185 JR: Another receiver from the '15 class. Explosive speed and could have a big year next season. Had a modest 132 rec yards as a rookie in '15. Battling injury in '16 he was still able to accumulate 140 yards receiving in only half of the games. Look for a jump in statistics particularly for him next season.

Rotation

#5 Ryan Dugan 5'11 165 JR: Yet another receiver from the '15 class. After playing in only 6 games as a freshman increased it to 11 as a sophomore. A true slot receiver who should see increased snaps with the graduation of Shea. after posting 89 rec yds and a touchdown as a freshman numbers dropped to 47 rec yards. This was due to less garbage time. Was more of a factor on special teams as a sophomore and there should be a major jump in statistics for next season.

#25 Parker Fox 5'11 175 RSSO: Walked on to the program as a runningback in '15. Redshirted his rookie year for the Crusaders. Jumped into the scene this year playing in all 11 games being a major factor on special teams. Was also able to grab 28 rec yards on the year.

#86 Bailey Gessinger 5-10 170 SO: Avoided a redshirt his freshman year by being a speed demon as a kick returner. Was the only return man in the pfl with two kickoffs returned for touchdowns. Averaged 24.4 yards per kick off return and allowed Jarrett Morgan to solely focus on the running  back position. Looks to get more snaps in the slot next year with Shea gone. Had 24 rec. yards.
'16: All PFL 2nd Team, Return Specialist

Reserves

#12 Jacob Koehler 6' 210 RSSO:: A taller/possession receiver redshirted his first year for the Crusaders in '15. Put on a good amount of weight which translated to him seeing action in three games as a RSFR in '16. Had 1 reception for 6 yards, could become a good redzone target next year for Seewald.

#83 Chris Orlich 6'3 175 SO: A very interesting decision by the coaches to burn the hometown kids redshirt and only play him in two games. A long rangy receiver with great potential in this offense. Will almost positively see an increased role next year with the Crusaders. Had 18 rec yards his rookie season.

Redshirts

#85 Ronnie Reitz 6'0 190 RSFR: The first commit of the '16 recruiting class. A thicker receiver with good hands and good speed. Will certainly see the field next season and looks to become a Catrine clone post Frank's graduation. Expect a role of some sort next season

#82 Jayson Reckards 6'0 160 RSFR: Resembles Koehler his freshman year. Big frame could fill out and become a posession receiver. Will likely see time on special teams next season and like his fellow receiving recruiting class expect a much larger role once the '15 class in gone.

VULB#62

#14
Thanks for the receiver review. Didn't expect it so soon and was thinking that OG and C were coming next. No biggie.

The returning group looks sound and with another year under their belt could have a productive '17. Probably missing is the fast deep threat. So we have to find a guy who defenses will have to account for who stretches the vertical boundaries of thesecondary so that our possession guys will have greater freedom underneath.

Gessinger had an eye opening debut this season and I am sure the coaches want to get the ball to him more often in 2017.

But receivers are no better than the guy throwing the ball to them. So going back to your QB analysis, whoever is the starter has got to get his reads correct and deliver a catchable ball. We are still a young team so, with refinement, that is a possible result.

valpofb16

Guard

Recap: When a majority of the offensive line graduated after the 2014 season the Offensive Guard position seemed one of the few certainties. Kyle Jones and Jon Hammond were both returning starters and only RSSO's. However both ended up leaving the team in the '15 season leaving openings for freshmen like Houston Underwood and Eric Rentschler. Houston Underwood ended up transferring after his freshman season. Coach Giac moved around the o-line putting Connor Rettig and Tom Schofield at the guard positions and the two manned them the entire season with Rentschler rotating in.

Graduated

#64 Connor Rettig 6'0 295: Was a redshirt in '13 under Carlson. Saw action in 6 games his rookie season in '14 mainly operating as the backup center. Became an emergency starter as center in '15 when Koeneman went down for the season with a back injury, starting the final seven games. Moved to guard in '16 with the losses of Jones, Underwood, and Hammond. Started every game at guard. Has another year of eligibility, could very well return but again with most Valpo fifth years he may opt against.

Starters

#73 Tom Schofield 6'3 285 JR: Saw action and started in almost every game at the OT position in '15(Missed Morehead St. game). Looked promising at tackle but due to the departure of Houston Underwood he was moved to guard in '16. Was the primary starter at this position. Good height and weight for a PFL guard. Will be a two-year starter returning.

#67 Eric Rentschler 6'2 295 JR: An absolute animal in the weight room looks to start next year at the opposite guard of Schofield. Not planned as a redshirt in '15 making debut in opening game he did end up seeing action in 5 games due to the departures of Hammond and Jones. Was a mainstay as a reserve in '16 being the primary back up at both guard spots.

Rotation

#70 Brady Sullivan 6'3 285 RSSO: A large individual, same stature as starter Schofield. Was redshirted his freshman season in '15. Played in one game his rookie season in '16. Look for an increased amount of snaps if Rettig does not return.

#50 John Horan 6'2 310 RSSO: Redshirted by the coaches in the '15 season. Good size for the guard position in the PFL. Did not see any action in '16. Look for him to make debut in '17.

Redshirts

#72 Solomon Kamara 6'2 285 RSFR: Coming out of a strong Plainfield East program the coaches were lucky to have the ability to redshirt Kamara in '16. Already possessing good size and weight look for him to crack the rotation and see a good amount of snaps his rookie year in '17.

#63 Sean Stephens 6'1 290 RSFR: Team captain for a solid Allen Park team in Michigan. Has good size already as a freshman and will be an asset in the future. A good redshirt move by the coaches to maintain additional eligibility. Like Kamara could see ample playing time next season.

#78 Ronald Williams 6'1 360 RSFR: The coaching staff was able to redshirt Williams in 2016. A steal out of enemy territory in Jacksonville,FL. Any player from Florida usually ends up in the rotation at some point if they stay. Appears to be a bit overweight given his height which could also be reason for the redshirt season. Could crack the rotation next season.

valpofb16

Center

Recap: From '12-'15 the center position was covered by team captain Nate Koeneman. Matt Schroll filled in when Koeneman missed 6 games in '12. Last year due to injury to Koeneman after the Sacred Heart game which ended his career RSSO Connor Rettig filled in as the emergency starter for the Crusaders. Many thought Jarnigan was good enough in the '15 class to play as a true freshman however the coaching staff made a sly move (see Lundberg) to redshirt Jarnigan.

Starter:

#65 Jack Jarnigan 6-2 290 RSSO: A great center from California. Has quick feet and is excellent at pass protection. Redshirted in '15 only weighing 265, started every game in '16 weighing 290. Will be the center for the Crusaders for the upcoming two years barring injury.

Rotation:

#61 Sean Pierce 6-3 315 SO: A massive body from Illinois. Played in four games as a center/guard in '16. Look for increased playing time in '17 with many more snaps.

Reserve:

#69 Alex Helander 6-0 275 RSSO: Missed camp and his entire freshman campaign due to a injury in '15. Was able to come out and make his debut in '16 playing in one game. Expect out of conference snaps.

valpofb16

Defensive Tackle

Recap: Since the '14 season Tristan De La Rosa has been a mainstay at the defensive tackle position. RSSR John Giovenco played opposite of him in '14 and SR Nick Scoville play alongside him in '15.  In '16 the rushing yardage allowed actually increased from 174 per game in '15 to 204 yards per game in '16. However pass rushing was better as the D Tackles only accumulated 1.5 sacks in '15 and increased that to 3.5 sacks in '16.

Graduated:

#90 Brandon Doepke 6'2 260: Has another year of eligibility due to a medical redshirt. Likely won't take it due to state of back injury. In '13 appeared in all 11 games as a true freshman. Had an outstanding rookie campaign compiling 38 tackles and 4.5 for a loss. Injured back in spring of '14 missing the season. Was a team manager essentially in '15 while out with injury. Massive comeback year in '16 playing all eleven games even making honorable mention all conference. Had 41 tackles and 5 for a loss. Was also able to accumulate 1.5 sacks.
2016 All PFL HM

Starters:

#56 Tristan De La Rosa 6-2 295 SR: A mainstay on the defensive line. Will have appeared in 32 games for the Crusaders heading into his SR year. Started as a true freshman appearing in 12 games in '14. Had 16 tackles and 4 quarterback hits on the year and a tfl. Started every game as a sophomore in '15 tallying up 17 tackles and 2 pass breakups. In '16 he missed a game but started in the other 10. Had his best season yet with 24 tackles, 3tfls, 1 sack, a pass breakup, and 5 quarterback hits. Never puts up flashy stats due to system but extremely pivotal for the defense.

#99 Jacob Trumpower 6'4 250 RSSO: Redshirted in '15 as defensive end behind Studyvin and Guilford. Moved to Defensive Tackle in the spring. Was listed as a starter in 10 games in his rookie campaign in '16. Essentially split time with Doepke for the year. Registered 23 tackles on the year, 3 tfls, half a sack, and and a quarterback hit on the year. Will be pushed for playing time by both Penn and Reed in '17

Rotation:

#97 Michael Penn 6-1 265 JR: Appeared in 5 games as true freshman in '15 as the fourth defensive tackle. Had two tackles in his rookie campaign. Broke though in the rotation in '16 playing in 10 games. Had 12 tackles on the year, 0.5 tfls, and 0.5 sacks. Looks to compete for the starting spot opposite of De La Rosa along with Trumpower and Reed.

#93 James Reed 6-1 285 SO: A monster sized recruit for the PFL. Came on strong playing in 10 games as a true freshman in '15. Had 7 tackles and 2 quarterback hits on the year. Expect to compete with Trumpower and Penn for opposite D Tackle spot of De La Rosa. Expect a much larger role in '17 with departure of Doepke.

Reserves:

#42 Jake Iery 6'1 260 JR: Played in the first two games of Valpo career in '15 before injuring his knee missing the rest of the season. He had two tackles as a true freshman. Played in 3 games in his sophomore campaign primarily out of conference. Had one tackle on the season. Could apply for medical redshirt from rookie campaign.

Redshirts

Humza Razzak 6'1 240 RSFR: Was not with team throughout camp. Joined team after/during the season after committing after signing day in '16. Will need to add weight to play in the PFL. Is in for spring.

Defensive End/Rush:

Recap: The Crusaders struggled mightily from '12-'15 but one mainstay on the line was defensive end and captain John Guilford. He was a perennial all conference type of player and registered 19.5 sacks over his career, was by far and away the most productive defensive lineman. With his graduation the Crusaders played the position by committee and were forced to play the position by committee due to injury of expected starter Jay Slone. Also graduated was starter Cody Cotton who moved from safety, to linebacker, to a rushing outside linebacker in the 3-4 scheme. He accumulated 41 tackles, 0.5 a sack, an interception, and two fumble recoveries as a SR. The Crusaders were able to combat this with SO Mike Wheeler coming into his own.

Graduated:

#34 Jay Slone 6-1 230 RSJR: redshirted as an outside linebacker in '13. Moved to rush the spring of '14. Had a solid rookie campaign in '14 playing in 7 games as a rookie amassing 12 tackles and 1 pass breakup. Was injured quite often in '15 still playing in 8 games as Cotton's primary backup. Had 16 tackles, 1tfl, a pass breakup and a forced fumble. Moved to a true defensive end in '16 expecting to lighten the loss of Guilford. Only played in 5 games on the year due to injury still posting 12 tackles, 1 tfl, and a sack. Is one of the few players expected to return for a fifth year.

Starters:

#18 Mike Wheeler 6-2 230 JR: Recruited as a mike backer in '15. Played in 5 games as a true freshman in '15 racking up 3 tackles. Moved to rush in the spring. As a sophomore was able to start all 11 games. Accumulated 42 tackles on the year, 2 tfls, a sack, a quarterback hit and 2 forced fumbles. Look for him to add more weight and improve as a returning starter in '17.

#95 Murphy Osmond 6-5 230 SO: Was thrust in the rotation due to the injury to Slone. Will need to gain weight for next season but also could be much improved his sophomore campaign. Had 19 tackles, 1.5 tfls, half a sack, 2 pass breakups, and a quarterback hit as a rookie. Look for those numbers to improve in '17.

Rotation:

#33 Gowan Baldwin 6-3 240 JR: Played as a wide receiver in high school due to athleticism. Recruited as a Strong side linebacker playing 7 games in his rookie campaign in '15. Did not record any stats on the year. Moved to Rush in the spring. Hopped in the rotation playing 10 games in '16. Had 11 tackles on the season and 1 tfl. Look for him and Wheeler to be the primary edge rushers in '17.

Reserves:

#54 Jesse Studyvin 6-4 250 JR: Was Guilford's primary backup in '15 playing in 9 games as a true freshman piling up 7 tackles. Played in only 3 games as a sophomore only recording 3 tackles. Due to size and strength could be moved to defensive tackle in the spring. Expect more snaps in '17 for Studyvin.

#48 Brent Dickson 6-5 220 SO: A huge frame that could play either end or rush in '17. Played rush his rookie season appearing in 2 games in '16. Played fairly while piling up 5 tackles in mostly garbage time. Could be poised for a breakout season if weight is gained and Slone does not return. Look for him in '18 and '19.

#57 Torrin Sallis 5-9 240 RSSO: Recruited as a mike backer and redshirted the '15 season. Moved to rush linebacker in the spring. Appeared in 1 game in his rookie campaign in '16. Has the strength but not necessarily the size to play d-tackle in '17.

Redshirts:

#55 Connor Sperling 6-2 240 RSFR: Good size was a defensive end in high school. Recruited as a rush linebacker in '16 and the coaches were able to redshirt him. Has good size and looks to crack the rotation in '16.

#87 Jordan Goebel 6-3 230 RSFR: Recruited as a true defensive end. Could be a good run stopper down the line. Needs to gain weight before next season. Could crack the rotation along with Sperling and Zajac in '17.

#94 James Zajac 6-6 240 RSFR: Excellent defensive end size for a freshman. Great testament that he was able to redshirt. Coaches were raving about him in fall camp so maybe injury was a factor in redshirt decision. Will most likely get a good amount of snaps as a sophomore. Like Studyvin could also move to d-tackle given size and frame.

You've been busy 16   ;D   Thanks for the assessments.  These will be very helpful once spring ball starts.

I plead ignorant on the exact system that Coach C runs on D.  However, a basic 4-3, which i think I am seeing in games usually relies on two big guys over the guards and two rather long and quick guys at DE. Guilford, as you point out, was a great one at that DE position. There is some promise there going into 17 IF we can bulk up some of the 6-4 to 6-6 kids, get them a bit quicker, and teach them good technique.  I had my concerms in 14 and less so in 15 with 200 pound edge rushers on the LOS like Cody. I always thought he was better positioned off the LOS as a standup Will LB who could both cover as well as apply weakside pressure. But sometimes he was overwhelmed (295# tackle on a 210# edge player) in a power run game to the weak side.

All that being said, I hope Coach Moore and the D really make a quantum leap in terms of competitiveness for 2017. The experience base is  growing as those youngsters from the 15 and the 16 class mature. Gotta keep plugging.

VULB #62 Great question! Coach Moore's defense is essentially a 3-4 multiple scheme. The Rush is technically an outside linebacker who can drop but usually rushes. The Snake is essentially a linebacker that can play in a lot of space. I don't quite think it's fair to call this a safety hybrid as the Snake plays at the line of scrimmage as well. Then there are two true inside linebackers, the Mike and the Will. Watching from afar it would be difficult to know what exactly is happening as Moore's defense is extremely complex. There are 3 to 6 man fronts with several packages. If he gets the right personnel in this scheme it could be the best defense in a long while for Valpo

Linebacker:

Recap: Linebacker figured to be an area that was a need for the Crusaders this year. Three year captain and multiple All-PFL Mike Linebacker Alex Green graduated with over 300 career tackles. To make things worse starting Snake backer Vincent Mcpherson transferred to continue his career at Georgia State (FBS). The lone bright spot was returning third year starter Kye Hall then he got suspended the first 2 games. The Crusaders had all first time starters the first game at Illinois State. Then Drew Snouffer, Dylan Johnson, Derrick Estell, and Nick Turner were thrown into the fire. However by the end of the year Snouffer was an All-PFL caliber player, Kye Hall returned and played well, Derrick Estell manned down the middle, and Dylan Johnson looked like one of the better freshman linebackers in the conference. Applause to Coach Manalac for turning the ship around.

Left Team:
#58 Jesse Slawnikowski RSJR. (Walk On)
#91 Ben Ariana RSFR. (Walk On)

Graduated:

#41 Charlie Hackett 6-1 210 Graduated: One of two 5th year seniors on the team (Nunes). Recruited as a defensive end redshirted his first year on campus in '12. In '13 played in 4 games having 2 tackles, 1 ff, and 1 qbh. Moved from END to RUSH in spring of '14. Played in 6 games tallying 4 tackles on the season. Saw action in two games in '15 before breaking hand missing rest of the season. Moved to SNAKE in spring '16. Played in 5 games in '16 tallying 11 tackles, 1.5 tfls, 1 qbh, and a blocked kick before missing season with a leg injury. Speedy rusher could never get it together due to injury.

#3 Derrick Estell 5-11 215 RSSR(?): Redshirted as a wide receiver his first year for the Crusaders in '13. Moved to the Snake backer position upon Coach Moore's arrival. Played in 4 games and had 3 tackles as a freshman in '14. In '15 was moved to the RUSH backer where he would play in 9 games primarily on special teams, totaling 10 tackles and a pass breakup. Major break out year in '16 moving to MIKE backer. Played in all 11 games splitting time with Turner had 47 tackles, 4.5 tfls, 1 sack, 3 qbhs, and 1ff. Odds are he does not return but if he did it would be a major pick up for the Crusaders.

Starters:

#24 Drew Snouffer 6-0 220 JR: What. A. Season. Came out of a reserve role as a freshman and had one of the better linebacking seasons in recent Crusader history. Recruited as a will backer played in 9 games as a true freshman in '15. Tallied 16 tackles and 1 tfl on the season. In '16 started all 11 games at WILL backer. Had 102 tackles, 7 tfls, 4 sacks (team leading as a linebacker :o), 2 ints, 5 pbrups, 5 qbhs, 2 tf, and 1ff. Will be the focal point of this defense the next two seasons.
All PFL HM

#7 Kye Hall 6-0 210 SR: A three year starter returning for the Crusaders. Had a big freshman year in '14 as the primary starting WILL backer. had 68 tackles, 4.5 tfls, a sack, and an interception. Took a step back in '15 production wise but was still the starting WILL backer for the Crusaders. Had 55 tackles, 2tfls, 1fr, and 3qbhs. Moved from WILL backer to Snake backer heading into '16. Missed two games due to suspension. Had 54 tackles, 7.5 tfls (Team leading in only 9 games), 0.5 sack, 4qbhs, and 1 fr. Look for a big senior year having played in 31 games in his career, should be starting SNAKE backer next season.

#49 Nick Turner 6-0 245 JR: A true middle linebacker. Saw action behind Alex Green playing in 9 games as a rookie in '15. Tallied 13 tackles on the year. Split time with Derrick Estell as a sophomore being the short yardage backer. Played in 10 games and had 54 tackles and 1.5 tfls. He will need to increase his speed if he wants to be an every down backer. One of the best run stoppers in the PFL.

Rotation:

#31 Dylan Johnson 6-1 195 SO: The hometown recruit from Valparaiso came on in a big way in '16. Played in all 11 games as a true freshman and had 29 tackles on the season, 3.5 tfls, and half a sack. Will look to rotate in more and provide excellent depth with Newkirk next season. Look for him to immediately become the full-time starter at SNAKE once Hall graduates.

#19 Tyler Newkirk 6-1 195 SO: A WILL backer for the Crusaders. Moves very well and has good speed. Played in 8 games as a true freshman in '16. Had 10 tackles on the year and 1 tfl. Look for his playing time to increase with the departures of Estell and Hackett. Should be a 20-30 tackle player next season.

Reserves:

#43 John Regan 6-0 220 SR: Recruited as a true MIKE backer played in 2 games as a rookie in '14 piling up 5 tackles. Moved to WILL backer in '15 where he played in 8 games and had 2 tackles. Played in 2 games as a junior in '16 piling up 5 tackles and 1.5 tfls. Could be backup MIKE next season.

#59 Tyree Thomas 6-1 210 RSJR: Attended Tiffin University in '14. Did not play on the Valpo team in '15. Walk On.

#47 Matthew Messler 6-0 235 RSSO: True mike backer redshirted his first season on campus in '15. Listed in the 2 deep as the backup MIKE in '16 yet did not see any games action. Looks to make debut in '17.

#37 Kyle Farwick 5-10 190 SO: Speed, speed, speed. Farwick is a fast outside linebacker from good Ohio program Cincinnati La Salle. Made 3 appearances in '16 during his rookie campaign and did not record any stats. Look for many more snaps for Farwick in '17.

#39 Jack Buckey 6-2 220 SO: A bigger backer from South Bend Saint Joe's. Played in 4 games as a rookie in '16. Did not record any stats on the year. Will either split time at MIKE next season or will develop into a bigger WILL backer as his career progresses.

#40 Michael O'brien 5-11 205 SO: Played in one game as a rookie for the Crusaders in '16. A true MIKE backer, looks great in a 4-3 in high school film. Would not be surprised to see him move to the WILL position.

Redshirts:

#36 Parker Welch 6-3 190 RSFR: A solid recruit from Texas. Looks really good in space and has a nice frame. Could potentially be moved to RUSH if enough weight is gained. Definitely look for Parker to see the field either on Special Teams or on D next season.

#38 Kyle Petroff 6-3 220 RSFR: Excellent red shirt from coaching staff. True MIKE backer from Indianapolis power house Roncalli. Look for him, Buckley, or O'brien to split time with Turner next season. Will be a player down the line.

Cornerback

Recap: Cornerback figured to take a hit this year as 3 year starters AJ Bradley and Melvin Graham graduated from the program. However Idode Kerobo who had played in 28 games prior to '16 manned one of the corner positions while Sophomore prospect Christian Campbell manned the other. With players like Cambell, LeAndre, and Riley all entering their junior or senior seasons I envision the biggest jump in production and level of play could very well come from this position.

Graduated:

#6 Idode Kerobo 5-10 180: Another one of Carlson's recruits who did not redshirt. Played in 8 games as a rookie in a backup role, tallied 10 tackles and one tfl in '13. Played in 10 games as a sophomore in '14, tallying 17 tackles and a pass break up. Earned more playing time in '16 as the primary nickel corner. Had 26 tackles, 0.5 tfl, and 2 pass break ups. Finished his senior year strong as one of the every down corners for the team. Played in 10 games, racked up 52 tackles, 4  pass breakups,  0.5 tfls, 1 int, 1 ff, and 1fr. While only truly starting one season the program will miss a player with 38 games of experience.

Starters:

#11 Christian Cambell 5-11 170 JR: A rangy ball hawking corner. Played as a true freshman in '15 in 9 games. Was able to record 6 tackles, 1 int, 1 pbrup, As a sophomore was a primary corner for the Crusaders. Tallied 30 tackles, 2 ints, and 3 pass breakups. Look for a big leap next year from Campbell as he returns for his second season starting.

#17 Brandon Riley 5-10 155 SR: Small but speedy corner. Very good at tackling despite his size. Appeared in 3 games as a true freshman in '14 recording a tackle in the big Missouri Baptist win. Played in 9 games as a sophomore in '15 piling up 5 tackles moving between corner and safety. Played as the primary nickel corner in '16. Played in 10 games as a junior. Had 30 tackles, 1 tfl, 1 int, and 3 pass break ups. Looks to become an every down corner heading into his senior year.

Rotation:

#29 Jalin LeAndre 6-0 190: Great size for a PFL corner back. Played in 7 games as a true freshman in '15 and looked impressive doing so. Had 20 tackles and a pass breakup on the year. Looked to play a major role as a sophomore in '16. Posted similar stats playing in 9 games and having 17 tackles, 1 tfl, and a pass breakup. Look for him to take on the nickel corner back spot or to start opposite of Cambell next season.

#22 Kyle Dye 5-9 185 JR: Played in 2 games as a true freshman in '15. Did not record any stats on the year. Played in 6 games in '16 primarily on special teams. Recorded 2 tackles on the season. Should be moved further into rotation with Kerobo's graduation.

Redshirts:

#5 Bryce Crook 5-11 175 RSFR: High school highlight film primarily focused on him at running back. Stayed home to play at Valpo along with Dylan Johnson and Chris Orlich. Could play offense next season or crack the rotation at corner. Expect to see the field at least on special teams.

#45 Taylor Allen 5-10 175 RSFR: Played at same high school as former All-PFL linebacker Alex Green. Track star. Should be able to see the field in some capacity next year for the Crusaders. Could be a return option along with Crook next season.

Safety:

Recap: In '14 when Coach Moore arrived he took JJ Nunes from running back and plugged him in at safety. He broke out individually playing extremely well in '14 and '15. Returning starter Melvin Graham manned the other safety position in '14 before returning to his more natural position in '15. Kellan Hughes started as a sophomore opposite of Nunes in '15 and resumed his spot in '16. Joey Diaz-Martinez took over for Nunes after he injured his leg in the Illinois State game and looked like a star. With Diaz-Martinez and Hughes back next year with Nunes somehow fitting in the equation this may very well be the most talented position on the team.

Starters:

#23 Kellan Hughes 6-2 205 SR: Has played in 28 games for the Crusaders starting 20 of them. Played as a true freshman in '14 ending the season with 15 tackles and a pass breakup. Named a starter heading into '15. Started 9 games and had 50 tackles on the season. He also had 0.5 tfls, 4 ints!, and a pass breakup. Was a returning starter in '16. Started all 11 games for the Crusaders. Had 84 tackles, 0.5 tfls, 2 ints, and 6 pass breakups. Like Diaz-Martinez he could very well be an all conference player next season. HM All-PFL

#28 Joey Diaz-Martinez 5-10 180 JR: Played in 10 games as a rookie and was extremely impressive in '15. Had 23 tackles, 3 ints, 2 pass breakups, and 1fr. Looked to be an excellent reserve in '16 until the Nunes injury then he took off. Played in all 11 games starting in 10 of those in '16. Had 70 tackles, 1tfl, 6 pass breakups, a team leading 5 interceptions, and 1 fr. Looks to improve on a good season this year and should compete for an all conference spot.

Rotation:

#4 JJ Nunes 5-10 195 6th/SR: Recruited to play running back and redshirted at Concordia(Neb) in '12. Transferred to Valparaiso in '13 having to sit out the season as a transfer. Moved from running back to safety under Coach Moore. Had a massive breakup campaign in '14 starting all 12 games. He piled up 85 tackles, 2.5 tfls, 1 ff and 5 pass breakups. In '15 had another strong campaign as he started all 10 games at safety or the snake position. Had 76 tackles, 4.5 tfls, 1 sack, 2 ff, 1 int, and 5 pass breakups. HM All PFLWas voted captain in '16 but broke his leg in the opening campaign against Illinois State. Said he will take medical redshirt and come back for a sixth season. Should be a starter somewhere on the defense in '17 the only question is where. Maybe at a corner spot or a linebacker spot while rotating in at safety.

#15 Isaac Lane 5-10 195 RSSO: Bulky hard hitting safety redshirted his first season on campus in '15. Received ample playing time last season due to Nunes injury. Played in 10 games having 17 tackles, 1 tfl, and a forced fumble. Look for more of the same from Lane. Provides excellent depth.

#20 Jamari Booker 6-0 185 SO: Most likely was a redshirt candidate before the Nunes injury. Came out as a rookie in '16 playing in 10 games. Had 8 tackles on the season. Could see more playing time next season and will be an excellent starter down the road.

Redshirts:

#35 Kyle Bender 5-11 200 RSFR: Quite an impressive highlight tape. A big hitting safety in the mold of Kellan Hughes. Will see the field in some capacity next season. Should be an excellent player in years to come.

#46 Nolan Fortman 6-1 180 RSFR: A quality redshirt by the coaching staff. Looks good in coverage on tape and also willing to hit and tackle as a DB.

Some comments and in some cases corrections applicable to this thread:

RB(more FB). Not sure how often a true FB is needed (Norberg is an H-Back and effective blocker) but with Brett Fox and Kenny Floyd both gone, there may be room for a player to morph into a FB.

QB: I think Chris Duncan is being sold short here as an "also in the mix". I think he is the prototypical QB for this offense.

TE/HB Much like FB, with Brett Fox gone, a true Y (inline) TE may be needed. All of the TE/HBs who played last year are more effective as move players lining up wide or running pass patterns out of a tight set. They aren't inline blockers needed for the running game.

LS Not sure having a starter on defense be the long snapper is a great idea. Mike Wheeler gets hurt and who is snapping? Then again maybe I'm wrong.

WR Rotation/Depth is wrong as presented. Positional breakdown was Outside: Catrine, Shea and Parker Fox. Inside: Rene, Dugan and Gessinger. Ryan Moore played both inside and outside. Starters were Catrine, Shea and Rene typically. The position available based on who is graduating is the outside receiver opposite Catrine and not an inside slot guy. Moore probably gets the outside spot with Catrine and Rene starting. P. Fox or one of the younger guys who didn't play much will back up Catrine and Moore. Dugan and Gessinger will fight for playing time inside with or behind Jean Rene. These guys have to stay healthy.

DL This unit played remarkably well in my opinion last season when I had no expectations of them due to their youth. Problem is part of the reason I wasn't hopeful was due to the lack of a player such as Brandon Doepke. He was an unexpected pleasure to have return. With youth on their side, this unit should continue to move forward and potentially become a dominating unit.

LB I look for Dylan Johnson to make the same type of leap that Drew Snouffer made last year.

DB With Nunes back, it appears safety is locked down and this includes a guy such as Taylor Allen who has a lot of upside. I'm less comfortable with CB with Idode gone. I think it was mentioned elsewhere but Bender is gone.
