Campbell shut out Morehead 38-0 today.

Total Off - Campbell 589 - MSU 240
Passing - Campbell 129 - MSU 205
Rushing - Campbell 460 - MSU 35
1st Downs Campbell 30 - MSU 11

We better be prepared for a grind it out running game -- that plays right to our strength -- NOT.

And you will recall that Morehead beat Dayton last week 34-28.  Sheesh!

JD24

Campbell was ahead of Stetson 42-7 at halftime the week before. Stetson put up a couple of TDs in the second half and had a bunch of passing yards in the second half.

It's a nice facility in Bouie's Creek.

Worthy of an FCS scholarship program  ::)

Next two games will feature QBs who aren't afraid to run. Daniel Smith is Campbell's leading rusher and Mike White is Marist's second leading rusher. The good news is Jacksonville has run for more than 500 yards two games in a row. But that's down the road a few games.

usc4valpo

Campbell will win decisively as they are becoming a scholarship 1-AA team.

Just a couple of comments regarding Campbell's schedule.

Throw out the Methodist score completely.  It was the season opener for both and was played at Barker-Lane.  MU (D-III) are winless and lost to Guilford (also D-III) 56-17.  Guilford was beaten by both Davidson (42-21) and Jacksonville (56-21).

Campbell lost to Georgetown, but since that win, G'Town has gone 0-3 and Marist barely beat them 14-12 in the waning seconds of that match.  They have been beaten badly by both Coumbia (35-14) and Harvard (41-2).  I am hearing rumors that G'Town might be the replacement for Campbell, as they are very skimpy about giving the Patriot League max of football scholarships.  They are Big East and basketball is the be-all and end-all, so, like Butler, the non-scholarship Pioneer might be a better fit.

Presbyterian beat Campbell 28-16 and are FCS scholarship and members of the Big South (of which Campbell is already a member and will now add their FB team to the conference).  BUT.... Presbyterian have lost all their other games except they beat NAIA Cumberland University of Tennesee 27-20.  Fun Fact: Cumberland is the school who ignominiously lost to Georgia Tech 222-0 in 1916.

You can't really predict based on comparative scores, but factoring in the G'Town and Presbyterian information, this throws a little more unpredictability into the equation.  It could be a Campbell blow-out with them running amok, or Seewald might get hot and we score a ton of points to stay even and maybe win.

With our defense giving up long drives and not forcing enough 3 and outs, I still have to go with Campbell though   :( .

What we do know when eliminating the scores vs. non conference which may make a team look better or worse is what has happened in conference to this point. Campbell has beaten down both teams they've played (the Stetson game wasn't anywhere near as close as it remotely appeared). Valpo has beaten one of those teams hanging on by a thread.

Valpo's defensive strength is in the front 7. Campbell's strength is it's running game...much of which comes from their QB. Containing him will be the key. If Valpo cannot, the defense will be on the field the entire game.

Almost everything I see about this game leads me to a Valpo is handily beaten conclusion.

VULB#62

I think we are in agreement, JD24.  Las Vegas would definitely have a sizeable spread favoring Campbell.   The one intangible is whether the CU secondary can handle a good passing attack.  I can't find any stats that showed they faced a really good passing team (I don't think Stetson qualifies depite the way our game turned out), so if there is a chance, it might be through the air -- provided we can .......

1 - Give Jimmy enough time to go through his progressions

2 - Run great routes that spring guys open

3 - Don't drop the easy ones

4 - Don't go 3-and-out a lot and leave the D on the field too long

BTW, what's the dope on their defense -- read and react or high pressure and blitz?  The former would be better for us, I think.  Pressure can kill us.

JD24

Morehead is a passing offense and they barely cracked 200yds vs. Campbell. Stetson put some yards and a few points up in the second half through the air which mustn't have gone over too well with Mike Minter since they shut MSU out the following week.

11 picks by the Campbell defense so far including 6 in their two PFL games. Seewald is not as mobile as Morehead's QB. Campbell also has 6 sacks in two PFL games which doesn't sound like a lot until we realize they lead the league. They also lead the league in interceptions and turnover margin.

Valpo has their work cut out for them.

So the $64,000 question is (and I know this might be interpreted as cynical):  Is Campbell really being true to their promise to the PFL to only play non-scholarship players?  Consider that there are sophomores, juniors and seniors who preceded the move to the Big South. Are the best of these still on "need."  And will they miraculously get a scholarship next year?  And were they unaware of the Big South decision when they originally signed?  Sorry, I am a sceptic.

Mercer joined the PFL for one year, sandbagged the league about scholarships and walked away with only bad feelings left behind. If they were cheating, who suffered a penalty?  Mercer?  Ah, lesson learned for  Campbell.

From now on, any PFL team who goes scholarship should immediately be removed from the PFL as a league member and their games in the transition year should be OOC (against a scholarship program) and not count in the PFL league standings.  The Mercers and Campbells get a "practice season" under  their belt but the PFL teams are unaffected league-wise.

JD24

My expectation was that had all happened (ineligible for league title and all games count as OOC games) but then when I looked for anything on it before the season started I couldn't find that it did. So I assume it didn't which is nonsense.

VULB#62

Yeah, this was years in the making. You can't tell me that their decision came out of the blue and suddenly they were changing direction. And if you know you are moving in a certain direction, wouldn't you clue your recruited players into this to attract them? And then you would spike their financial aid package to approximate what a full sholarship might be.  It is beginning to smell a lot like Mercer all over again.

The game is at Buies Creek? Is that a town near Mayberry? Will Barney Fife referee this matchup?

Actually, if you look at a satellite image of Buies Creek (pop. 2,942), you'd be hard pressed to find anything besides the Campbell campus and farmland and woods. The closest real down-town is Lillington (pop. 3,581) 4.9 miles away.

FYI (from Wikipedia)

Campbell is private - Baptist affiliation
7,121 enrollment

The lawn needs watering. Where's Goober to help out? And I am sure Aunt Bee has great food at the concession stand.
