With another lightning delay here's some info to fill the time:

Butler over JU 37-22 (Bulldogs out rushed the Dolphins by a net 2 yards).
Campbell beat Dayton @ Dayton 17-7
Stetson beat Davidson 28-17
Morehead takes on USD on the left coast 2PM PST (4CST)

The map looks like about another 15 and it looks clear for a while.  That would be about 5 Central.

Rule is 30mins past last lightning strike.

I assume Marist has a flight to catch. How does that figure into things?

usc4valpo

This thunderstorm is something else! I wonder what these teams do between with such a long wait. It will be interesting when this game is completed and how many fans with wait this out.

usc4valpo

30 mins after lightning? That sounds like the rule at the local pool at Ankeny.

I think USC and Utah will finish their game before this one!

Damn.  Marist blocked our FG with 8 secs left in the half. 14-3 at the half. After the break we forced a punt and drove right down to the Marist 2  😖

We have 2 picks to 1 for Marist.  We have 276 total yards to 145 for Marist. White out of the line up makes a BIG difference.

That is the collegiate rule no matter the level. It may also be the NFL rule.

I am sure the lights are already on but this game will finish in the dark AFTER the USD game in San Diego.

OH, BTW, THE WOMENS SOCCER TEAM KICKS OFF AT 8PM TOO.

usc4valpo

The way this game is going, I wish Valpo would always play in these conditions!

hailcrusaders

I don't think the game is being streamed (someone tell me if I'm wrong) but the ESPN ticker said we were up 42-3? Is that right? Is this all because their quarterback is out? What on earth is happening at Brown Field?

HOLY SMOKES!!  (or may be Holy Lightning!)  Killing Marist, now 49-9.  We have scored 49 versus Campbell but we have never beaten a PFL team this bad.

Our stars,er, clouds were aligned. Not seeing the game, I can only guess that we did few things wrong and they could not do anything right. I noticed on the game tracker that Mike White played at the end and his fumble allowed Stargle to recover and score the final TD.

72, we must indeed find out if this 49-15 win is our biggest PFL winning margin.  We certainly have been on the losing side of a few PFL winning margins.

****************************

Whadya know. Here are our all - time top three PFL winning margins*:

#3 -  1996  vs. Butler 50 - 29 (21)
#2 -  2008  vs. Campbell 47 - 14 (33)
#1 -  2017  vs. Marist 49 - 15 (34)

* at least I'm pretty sure just working on my iPad.

Fascinating how at this level the loss of a key player can completely turn things on their head.  Witness how Georgetown beat Campbell this year, Marist beat Georgetown, we killed Marist and Campbell killed us.  Figure that out.

Here is another Fun Fact: this is the second year in a row that we are 3-4 after 7 games. The last time we were 3-4 after 7 was 2007.

You have to go back to 2000 for 4 wins in 7 games.

With, in my opinion, a great chance to go 4-4 after a win vs. MSU.

Wound up with 5 picks in this game. Made both Marist QBs look ineffective.

Who were those guys in brown jersies in the Valpo secondary anyway?

5 picks and a fumble recovery for a TD. Great job by the secondary.

Brandon Vickrey‏ @BrandonVickrey                .@valpoufootball's 34-point margin of victory today is the program's largest in a league game since Nov. 6, 1971, a 48-12 win over Butler.

someone asked about the Marist travel arrangements...

In the pressbox we were talking about their plans, and recognizing that if the game was being affected by the storm(s), so was O'Hare.   They are a Jet-Blue team and like to fly out of JFK in New York.   Game ended at 7:10pm (6-hours and 6-minutes after kickoff)...and they had a 8:40pm flight out of O'Hare... and they did not have Hotel Reservations for their travel party of 55 players, plus coaches and staff...I don't know if Jet Blue held the flight for them...or if the weather was the real culprit.

Jet Blue #1106  Departure    SCHEDULED  Departure  8:40 PM  Actual Departure 12:14 AM   Scheduled Arrival  11:55 PM  Actual Arrival 3:37 AM...Then it's 90 miles (1:45 drive) up to Poughkeepsie.

Hats off to the Valpo football parents and staff for their planning.  Coach Cecchini's post-game show talked about their planning... and that buffet during the second lightning delay.  what a spread !!

Speaking of Buffets... sorry about the Soccer match (resched for Sunday) and the big reunion planned.  So, they had a big buffet spread in the McGill room in the ARC for the soccer team and their special alumni guests.   It was scheduled for between the Football game and the Soccer game.  Thanks for making the offer to the folks in the football pressbox to come and eat !!  The Chocolate Chip Cannoli's were phenomenal !!

Speaking of staff and stuff... Brown Field's drainage system is incredible.   After all that rain the track was flooded and the field had serious ponding... within 5 minutes it was gone.  I don't know though... I remember the days where a rain like that would have made for a fun "Mud Bowl"; but without the lights, that game would have been postponed about 3:00pm.

Yep, saw that. He also wrote it in the game recap. That was when  Valpo was in the Indiana Collegiate Conference along with DePauw, Evansville, Butler and St. Josephs. By then (1968) Ball State and Indiana State had left the ICC. In those days, there weren't all the NCAA and NAIA divisions that we have today. Basically it was membership in either the university division or the college division. In the college division all-american was designated "Little All-American."

I have a baseless observation in search of confirmation.  Marist QB Mike White, who was a preseason team pick or somthing, I believe, sat the whole first half. At first there was speculation that he was hurt, but he played virtually the entire second half. Could he have been benched for disciplinary reasons?

Didn't matter much as he threw 3 picks when he was on the field.

UPDATE FROM THE PFL BOARD:

49-9 as one catholic school to another stop the beating. We are done.

Valpo is Lutheran.

How can not having your QB result in that kind of performance? Melted down a bit too. Two early unsportsmanlike penalties.

The decision to put White into the game is horrible. The kid is injured. This game shows how terrible the Marist coaching staff is, particularly against a 4th year coach that is turning around the Valpo program.

And the Foxes were picked to be 3rd in the PFL. What a mess.

Didn't understand White coming in at all. If he was healthy enough to play at all he should have started. Marist had at least 4 unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. That's terrible. I hope the coaching staff starts and ends any comments on the game with "that one is on me and the staff".

No true confirmation, but White has been injured since last season. The kid is a warrior so when asked, "Can you go?", he isn't going to say "No". But he should have never been an option. That is horrible coaching. The coach of Valpo, Cecchini in his fourth year has just shown how inept the Marist staff of 25 years is.

Agreed White is banged up and couldn't practice all week. There was no way he should of been put in that position. So you build up your 2nd string QB that he's the man against Valpo. 2nd half comes and you yank him for a injured player who couldnt practice. Defense had no pressure on the Valpo QB.Looks like this 3 man front just cant get it done the last few games, maybe time to switch that to a 4 man front.Secondary getting burned for long TDs at least 2 /3 times a game. Poor play selection in the Red Zone . To many dumb penalties.Staff needs to look at themselves in the mirror.

chef

White was injured vs Columbia after taking a hit to his throwing elbow, and was doubtful. We were told he probably would only play if Hallenback was injured. He traveled and dressed. I'm guessing they felt they could win without him, and decided to not risk playing their standout QB at less than 100%. However, it was clear at 21-3 they needed a spark and I'd assume White convinced the coaches he could play. As it turned out, White turned it over himself 4 times in the second half, so it didn't matter.

I went to the official Marist Football forum and there were a total of 6 posts about the game. SIX!  The Marist fans post more on the PFL site, if you can believe that.

There are some calls for firing their staff because they are stuck in mediocrity. They should try years of ineptitude like Valpo experienced prior to Cecchini coming on board. I know many of us are impatient, but outsiders are noticing our steady rebuilding and throwing some respect our way.

Post game thoughts

1. This is first time i have thought Jimmy could be NFL good and I don't say that lightly, prototypical size, Will be multiple all-conference type guy
2. DB's were much improved however the Hallenbeck kid was not very good and the starter White came in a little to late, still gave up the big throw.
3. Rain delay killed Marist and Valpo jumped them

Overall great win, Our offense when clicking is a top in conference, defense just has to be passable to get some wins, Also Norberg in the slot was an excellent matchup we used to get our run game going, much better blocker helped get edge.

Now lets enjoy a bye week, instead of my depth chart I can do positional break downs for the season so far if people would like to keep the football talk alive, just let me know
