Meet Valpo's Alec Peters, the NCAA's best-kept secret
Laken Litman , laken.litman@indystar.com Published 5:09 p.m. ET Feb. 25, 2017

"VALPARAISO – Matt Lottich held the edge in this conversation with John Calipari.

It was Dec. 7 and Lottich's Valparaiso team was in Lexington to take on then-No. 7 Kentucky. The two coaches met at midcourt before tipoff for a chat.

"How do you guard Alec Peters?" Calipari asked.

"You light a candle and pray," Lottich replied.

The Wildcats won that game 87-63, but Peters — a 6-9, 235-pound power forward for what could be one of the most dangerous mid-major teams heading into March — had 23 points and eight rebounds. After turning down the NBA last spring to come back for his senior season, Peters is averaging 23.1 points and 10 rebounds ahead of the Horizon League tournament, which begins Friday. If the Crusaders (24-6) win it, they will receive a bid to the NCAA tournament after being NIT runner-up last season.

Peters is Valpo's key to a run. And could be the most intriguing player down the tournament stretch.

"There has not been one team, one player that has been able to guard Alec Peters one-on-one," Lottich told IndyStar. "Teams in our conference know our actions and some of our tendencies and they load up on him. The best thing about him is he's efficient. A willing passer when they take away his shot opportunities and he'll go get a rebound. He'll find a way to score, but he won't do it at the expense of hurting his team."

In Lottich's first season as head coach — Bryce Drew left Valparaiso in April for Vanderbilt after five years — he said they put together a strong schedule against a handful of RPI Top 100 teams, including Oregon, Kentucky, Rhode Island, Alabama and BYU.

Two draft projection sites I checked out this morning...one has him going 52 to the Suns (I can't remember which site this was), the other (DraftExpress) has him going 30 to the Jazz.

Found this 2-year-old post by LaPorte Ave Apostle...Recapping Alec's sophomore year...projecting where he would wind up in March 2017.   LOVE the last line of the post about Bryce...

===============================================================

The new season blocks record is 98.  The old one was 72.  So, should stand for a while.  We'll miss you, Vashil, especially the extra year you should've had.  His career mark was 170, #2 behind Raitis' 228.

The new record for most points in fresh-soph years is 1003.  Alec posted the #8 season for points with 570, and while having more games than most of the rest of those guys on the list helped, he still had to do it.  Had he hit one more 3 at the end (wouldn't that've been nice) he'd have tied senior Dan Oppland for season points, and he'd have passed senior Rowdy Broekhoff to have the #6 season in 3FGs alone.  (Let that sink in for a second.)

As it is, he posted the #5 all-time 3-pt shooting season, at 46.6%, and is just behind Seth Colclasure for the #5 3FG% career, at 42.55%.

So how much better could he be?  I'll leave that to Kyle to project improvement, and simply give the most conservative estimate (what else) and tell you where he'd be if he posts 2 more seasons just like these 2.  Just a baseline; obviously he'd do better, just as he exceeded last year this year.

Games
1.  Buggs 138
2.  Alec 136

Points
1. Bryce 2185
2. Alec 2006

Rebounds
t4. Dan Oppland 782
t4. Alec 782

Field Goals
1. Alec 698
2. Bryce 696

3FG
1. Bryce 364
2. Alec 280

FTs
6. Dan Oppland 364
7. Alec 330

After 20 more FTA he'll be top 10 for FTs as well as 3FGs.

Again, this is the baseline.  I mean, why would Bryce leave in the next two years?  Because he's the only one who can keep Alec from breaking most of his records ; )

Congratulations to Alec on being named the Horizon League Scholar Athlete of the Season! Also, I thought everyone will appreciate the following tweet with video showing Alec continuing his work ethic and practicing on one leg:

I thought I read somewhere that he'll skip the heavy workouts and scrimmaging and mainly concentrate on  interviews, medical stuff and straight skills that don't stress the foot (what that would be aside from spot up shooting is beyond me).  He is living and training in Chicago.

valpotx

That is a pretty exclusive list to be part of, especially when several teams are going to be turned off by his injury.

Alec's draft status and position may be uncertain, but he should be able to use these interviews to determine where in the NBA (and pro basketball as a whole) his skillset is the best match for future success.  Even if he is not drafted, the NBA scouts will be looking at him wherever he ends up playing next year.

I wish him the best!

Alec Peters Should Be A 2nd Round Target

Alec Peters would be a quality value pick for the Philadelphia 76ers if he is available at the 46th or 50th selection in the 2017 NBA Draft.

This is the highest I've seen him going.

21       Thunder

Alec Peters, PF, Valparaiso The Thunder had the worst 3-point percentage in the NBA last season. Enter Peters, one of college basketball's top shooters. No, he may not have NBA athleticism, but for a team that needs to make shots, Peters and his remarkable 60.4 percent true shooting percentage fits. Oklahoma City is a team that needs to win now; taking a college senior like Peters is more wise than taking some sort of project.

I sent an e-mail to the Blazers (since I live in Portland) and gave them my blessing to draft Alec Peters.  I'm sure they read it and are taking my advice.

I think we should be grateful if any NBA team decides to draft Alec.

I did have to think twice if being drafted by the Sixers was a good thing. I decided it was slightly better than not being drafted.

I am reacting more to people discovering Alec the person, great player that he is.
