Didn't this happen a few years back to a few of our guys?? I don't want to say names and be wrong, but I believe they got a 2 or 3 game holiday.

Yes it did,  Jubril and Shane were caught.  Each got a two game suspension.

Quote from: VULB#62 on February 01, 2017, 10:56:34 AMMusta been Sunday night or he wouldn't have been in uniform and played 22 minutes.

I think it was actually Friday night. I was already hearing word about it on Saturday. I've been waiting for the blotter to come out, more or less. The Times website for their "Crime Times" blotter seems a bit of a mess, but I do now see it electronically. They seem to run a "weekend roundup" on Monday, so probably it came out then.

It happens there was a similar incident the previous weekend, but with no athletes involved AFAIK (though some other students I'm connected with, alas). That one had a news report written up, a few days after the fact, with the address (north of campus some blocks) and some details.

I haven't seen a similarly detailed report of the more recent event. But, from the list (public at nwitimes.com), there were a number of student athletes involved.

Rumors are that it was off campus, but not far off campus. And probably that it was the city police, rather than VUPD. With suggestions that if it was on campus it might perhaps have been handled more "gently". But, as has been mentioned here, VUPD has gone back and forth over the years in terms of how "quietly" they're willing to handle these kinds of incidents with students.

For VUMBB we have concrete, recent experience, as has been mentioned here. Was it one current (and still current, more or less) team member and one sitting-out-his-transfer-year student? Someone could look up the penalty. If I remember the incident was out-of-season and the penalty was a game or three suspension served at the discretion of the coaching staff (don't think it was the first games of the season).

Here's another interesting question: What if this happened Saturday night?
He played Sunday.
Hmm.

It did. And he certainly did.

Whether it was Friday or Saturday, it seems like it was before the game.

Could be another question, maybe, of when the coaching staff or Athletic department became (formally?) aware of it.

And, innocent until proven guilty and all, I imagine it could come down to how a particular student reported (or didn't) the incident, etc.

*shrug* Not a good situation for the players, or the student in general, not a good situation for the coaching staff or Athletic department. No easy answers.

A little discretion, or generally better judgment, by the students could presumably go a long way toward avoiding this kind of thing. Maybe a little guidance from the upper-classmen as well.

In Spain I believe they can legally drink at age 16. Not excusing this, just find it interesting how different cultures handle things like drinking age.

I think it has been proven in the past that the coaching staff has discretion as to when to suspend the student-athlete. Adekoya was suspended the first two games after the Dec. 13 arrest two years ago. Hammink was also arrested at that party and his suspension kicked in at the beginning of the following season when he was eligible. Drew elected to play Hammink in the first two games of the year, then have him sit out against IU-Kokomo and Trinity Christian. I don't believe there is any NCAA jurisdiction here.

I think a big part of it is what were the details. Was he falling down drunk or did he perhaps have a drink as part of a fraternity initiation event and then go to another party later and simply get caught in the wrong place at the wrong time? BAC level would go a long way in determining this. I suppose we wait for the police report should it ever come.

Info on fan bus?

You'll have to call the Alumni office at 219-464-5142 to get a reservation but you can still get in on it. You need to call the Milwaukee ticket office 414-229-5886 and talk to Nate for a ticket in the Valpo section which is section 321. I found out I'll be in the Chicago area on Thursday and will be at both the alumni event at Andy Nunemaker's home and at the game.

It maybe deserves it's own thread, but I think it's fantastic that what seems to have become an annual Milwaukee fan bus tradition continues.

And that they're running one to Oakland this year as well.

These journalists and their so-called "facts" getting in the way of rampant internet speculation and half-memories!

Thanks for the info, Paul.

It might surely be tempting to delay any penalty until we've clinched the conference title!

Quote from: NativeCheesehead on February 01, 2017, 10:18:10 AMWay off topic. Underage drinking is a crime. I understand that. But VUPDs lengthy tradition of full on arrests and transportation to Porter County Jail is a bit much. When I was at Vu they would go so far as to pull over the student escort van to breathalyze everyone. I personally witnessed two male students taken from their dorm room where they were drinking and arrested. Other schools will make offending students attend a couple of meetings and/or write a report. Now it's possible (looks likely) that they were off campus partying and if you're being stupid doing that you have what's coming. I appreciate this will need to be addressed by the team in terms of a suspension, but it's hard to not be a little pissed when I think of how few Baylor football players were actually suspended over the past few years. End of rant. (for now)

I'm a more recent alumnus than most on this board, but my understanding is that VUPD is now much different in regards to underage drinking than it used to be. I believe the current VUPD chief (Chuck I think his name is?) has a much more...shall we say "reasonable" attitude than those previously in his position. I only had one alcohol related run-in with VUPD and the officer was much more relaxed and casual about it ("Just go home for the night and I'll leave you with a warning") than he could have been. I don't remember hearing about the late van getting pulled over during my time, but it is frequently used by drunk students.

The city police, meanwhile, you didn't mess with. A group of friends was stopped and breathalyzed by a city cop on the sidewalk off campus when one playfully grabbed a nearby tree branch. They were all sober, but heaven forbid we have drunken college kids grabbing tree branches around town.

If Sorolla was taken in, I bet the incident occurred off campus. He'd have to be pretty belligerent or REALLY drunk to get the university police to haul him off.

Here's a good word of advice to VU athletes: Don't attend an "underage drinking party," especially outside of campus.
Odds are not in your favor. Valpo cops will find you.
Throughout the years, the Tuesday Police Blotter in the Times regularly features a "Police bust xx at underage drinking party."
Wait until you're 21. And then, don't do anything stupid during the season. It's not worth the grief.

Party happened at Uptown East Apartments. It's as close to being on campus as you can be without actually being on-campus.

He was just loading up on carbohydrates for the game on Sunday.  He is foreign and must have misunderstood what Lottich meant by, "get plenty of carbs tonight."   :)

FieldGoodie05

Anyone else a bit numb to drama regarding eligibility with this years team?

This might be a good game for J to take a seat.  Milwaukee will go pretty small.  In the regular 8 man rotation (at least against Oakland in the last game), they have one kid at 6'9", one at 6'7" and everybody else 6'5" down to 5'11".

When I played football, we typically got arrested in 2s, 3s, 4s and sometimes even 5s.  I realize the basketball team isn't as big but it's too bad he didn't get in trouble with his teammates--it can really be a team bonding thing when you're singing kumbaya in the jail cell.

swiftmutiny

Maybe he forgot that the legal drinking age is higher in the United States?  ;)

Oh, great. The next thing that will happen is the university will ask the NCAA for clarification about whether he should have played Sunday, and hold him out until they get an answer. We may see J again sometime in December.

It's a University issue and not an NCAA issue.

If we hear anything it will be "violation of team rules" which is standard for "underaged drinking" across the collegiate athletic sphere. When we had 47 non 21ers suspended a couple of years ago it wasn't even mentioned by most, if not all, of the sports. The player just sat out with no comments from the coaching staff to the public.

It might be good advice but there's also a fair amount of unrealistic expectations in that advice.

If there is a two-game suspension, Lottich has authority to determine which two games. I would recommend the Cleveland State & Youngstown St. games at the ARC.
