The season kicks off today at old ‘friend’ Detroit Mercy. The squad is pretty young, but beat DePaul in an exhibition 1-0 warming up for this season. Nowhere to go but up from last season’s unusual losing campaign. This is their Michigan road trip as they’ll take on Oakland after Detroit.
There’s a good preview on the Valpo Athletics website and TVB had really good position group articles heading into the season opener.
Saw Paul’s KO pic at Detroit. Can someone, anyone, please explain to me WHY their soccer field is dominated by football marking despite the fact that they DO NOT play football - just soccer and LAX?
Lost 2-1 on a PK. That sucks.
DM is a good offensive team that had a winning record last season AND made it to 2nd round of Horizon league tourney. Our Beacons were not that last season.... SO if it was 1-1 without the PK I say good sign. We actually had ESPN+ on but it said coming soon, then it said this event is over. Hopeful for this season!
Reading Paul’s TVB account it was even more impressive for a young team (5 freshmen got significant minutes). Detroit did not score in the run of play and had only one shot on goal all game. Their first goal came off a set piece at 4 minutes. Their second came on a PK at 86 minutes.
Im sure people are excited but just to be clear-if you look at conference rpi the MVC in womens soccer is awful -so in theory we should be winning games every year..it is one of the only programs we have that actually benefitted from moving to the Valley. It is just an awful conference for womens soccer
1-1-1 now all against Horizon league teams. They could be 3-0, was able to watch today on ESPN+ and they looked sharp. Good ball movement, obvious the girls were comfortable playing together.

The freshman Desiderio scored 2 goals. She scored an incredible 241 goals in high school
Watched the game. Valpo seems to faster and have more offense than in past years. Being young started to show but overall a very solid outing.
This program is going downhill fast-2 years straight...and looks like they have a couple pretty good players....

I disagree. Last year 1 tie, this year already at 4 ties. They just tied a 9-3 SUI team that is 3rd in the Valley, they also tied ISU-R who is 2nd in the Valley. I have watched this team several times, its a good team that can win. Soccer is like that, having played and coached myself a soccer match is as much or more frustrating than any other sport.
3 Valley matches left, a win streak starts at 1!!!
Top goal scorer is a freshman and 9 of top 10 in minutes played are eligible to return next season. 4 freshman, 2 sophomores and 3 juniors.
Overall, this was a fairly tough season. However, we ended the season on a pretty high note. If today’s game finishes in our favor (currently up 2-0), then we will end the season 2-1-1 in our last 4 games. Our loss during that stretch was a close 1-0 match against the current #2 team in the MVC. We will most likely see some improvement if our young core stays together.
The transfer portal is typically kinder to the Olympic sports as opposed to the Big 3. Hopefully the core stays together
This was more of a true rebuild than last year - last year was a down year despite having a lot of seniors, although many of them did get injured. This year had much more contribution from a big freshman class and there weren’t many seniors either. It will be interesting to watch this group grow and see if they can start another period of Marovich success.
