We usually only play 1 buy game, and this year we have 3 and im wondering if that could be a strategic way to generate significant NIL funds without relying on alumni?
We play this many buy games because the MVC instituted that scheduling mandate. NIL funds will always be reliant an alumni and community sponsors
ON an unrelated note the second half has looked so much better.

It is my understanding that they are allowed to pay players directly from their own funds since they opted in. Are there any rules defining where that money comes from? If not, what is stopping us from playing an Oakland like schedule, bringing in 5 million in NIL, and saving, say, a million bucks on our roster next season while putting the rest towards the athletic department/travel?

Yes, we can use these funds for “NIL”. It’s technically not considered NIL, it would come from the $20.5 million salary cap established via the house settlement. From my understanding, these buy game funds are typically used for travel, other buy games on our end, coaches, athletic facilities, etc. Our athletics department has already stated that they will most likely not use funds from games like this; instead, they will use a portion of ticket sales and concession proceeds. Attending home games is crucial and it’s always more fun for the players and fans if there is higher attendance.
The second half looked MUCH better. We need to figure out how to rotate faster and defend alley oops. Kentucky kept some of their starters in for an extended period in the second half as well. Tough night for JT, but some good showings from Rakim and Hopoi.
@vok22 unfortunately I believe you’re vastly overestimating basketball buy game payments. Have never seen a payment over $125K - for instance, when Evansville beat Kentucky in 2019, they got $90K for that. Not the same sums as football.
Also, not 100% sure we are even getting paid for Kentucky, since part of the agreement for playing in the MTE is that we got two home games out of it. Would like to see that contract but not sure.

Thank you, thats good to know. I remember the football team got paid 750k for their game against New Mexico State (?) a couple years ago. Football money is just different I guess.
PO article says that this was not a buy game. We got 2 home games and no cost incurred by Valpo was what I got out of the explaination
Half the reason our three point shooting is an issue is because most of them are not open shots or are forced. There have been a few possessions that we worked the ball around and generated an open shot. I don’t understand why we dont try to do that every time down the floor.
This is not a new issue. This has been the case for the entirety of Powell's 2 seasons plus 2 games. My guess is that he wants his defense to create offense to the detriment of a set offense. IOW practice is spent much more on the frantic than the mundane.
Valpo can miss open 3's with the best of them but the overall point that too many of the missed three's are just not good shots from players who aren't knock down shooters I agree with.
Tonight's game was as expected....only worse.
I remember when teams wouldn’t schedule Valpo out of fear.
Now Valpo’s a tomato can boxer just collecting a paycheck.
Agree with above...BAD shots...when ball moved a little the shots were better. Missed alot of layups that I expect will fall. Impressed with Chaney, Hopoi and tupuola mixed it up nicely. Contested alot of stuff inside. Gotta get better quality shots. Deace and Barnes have to show up or I can see tornatta increasing minutes. Maybe servillus...Mark Brown settle down. But please somebody tell the guys a step back contested three 7 seconds into the clock is NOT a good shot. A strength last year was low turnovers and making free throws. More of that I hope is coming. Remember this Kentucky team is potential final 4- and alot of freshman contribute for valpo. Im still convinced there is more talent on this squad than last year. I still have some kool aid in the fridge
If half of your shoes are going to come from three, you better make more of them than Valparaiso has through two games. Nobody expected VU to compete last night, but the lack of offensive effectiveness is concerning.
Regarding evaluating Valpo, not much to really evaluate. but it is totally clear that mid-major basketball has certainly become the AAA for D1 hoops, which hurts the sport.

Yes, if you are looking for evidence of the ruination of Division I college basketball contributed by recent changes, this would be presented to the jury as an exhibit.
Spurred by a NY Times article and headline that was behind a paywall I didn’t want to go beyond, I checked the UK schedule on their website and, Voila! I found out that a $22million player payroll buys them four (yes - 4️⃣, IV, quattro, vier), losses out of their first 10 games in 2025. And one of them was a blowout loss to Gonzaga 59-94. 😱😨🤔🤭😊😂🤣
