That was a really tough game to drop. Tough shooting for Valpo. 35% from the field and 24% from 3. We lost a lot on the offensive glass, that may have been the deciding factor in such a close game. I really don’t know why Justus wasn’t utilized a bit more down the stretch. He had a great first half, started off strong in the second half off the bat. Turned it over and he was out. I was expecting him to come back in but he was held to the bench. Missed utilization from a hotter hand in my opinion. The officiating could have stayed more consistent to the pace and level of contact. I don’t like to blame an L on officiating though so I’ll move on. Keyonte got some side minutes and did alright. He didn’t hurt and he didn’t help. Seemed like he got a few minutes that would otherwise be Marks. The defense was decent outside of rebounding UNCW had to rely on Hodges for everything. Like I highlighted coming in, we were able to get there big guy in foul trouble and our bigs did a good job of keeping them out of the paint to limit post touches. This a game we had the chance to close but fizzled out. I would have really liked to get this one but I’m looking forward to what’s ahead.
Missed some bunnies late and I feel like refs swallowed the normally frequent whistles late for Pettigrew and Chaney. And Yup where was Justus? I feel like he earned some second half minutes. That said UNC Wilmington was decent and We will have several games just like this in MVC that have to be closed out... And good to meet ya Brian F!
IF I had to guess. Justus was out because he took some hard falls going to the cup in the first half. Might have been reassessed in the locker room and was told that he should switch to limited.

Second the Justus comments. How in the world do you not play the hot hand in the second half, only giving him 3 minutes? Even with 3 fouls, ride it out until he fouls out, versus the offensive struggles we had in the last 5 minutes. Powell admitted as such. Team played hard, but similar to Marquette, another miss on a marquee win.
If McNair didn't play more in the 2nd half for a reason other than illness or injury, it's time to wonder about Powell's in game coaching ability. This would be following the "players didn't do what I wanted them to" from a few games back.
