ESPNs pre-game predictions gave Valpo a 49% chance of winning. This was a game we should win at home and we did. Rakim is showing early signs of a star. We won the rebound battle 35-30, and the turnover battle 15-9. We will compete in a lot of games this year if we continue to have good defense and can rebound. We MUST improve our free throw shooting. The final 4 minutes was much better than the EIU game. A win is a win, but there is still room for more improvement.
Looked like a coherent unit for most of the final 10 mins which is moving in the right direction. Otherwise can't depend on one player shooting 80% in every game. Good on Pettigrew for toughing it out.
Powell stuck with a unit for the latter half of the second half. Thats what these games are for. Figuring out what works and fine tuning it for conference
A nice win last evening. Impressive night from Rakim Chaney. I still have some concerns about the offense, but that was a positive step forward. Next four games are all very winnable. Go get them!
This team is learning, growing and notching wins. Powell is doing well as head coach.
Last night’s game was a great effort, and I’m impressed with the improvement and hustle across the board. Rakim had an outstanding performance and played a major role in securing the win.
Our shooting in the first half was frustrating, but it improved significantly in the second. However, the half-court offense still needs work. At times, we got deep into the shot clock without a clear plan and struggled to finish at the rim. Screens also seemed to disrupt our sets rather than create advantages, and there were moments when players looked uncertain in half-court situations.
These are areas we can address through better communication and adjustments from the coaching staff as chemistry develops. Overall, the team showed resilience and refused to quit, which is something to be proud of. Let’s keep building on this momentum and continue improving as we prepare for Valley play. On to the next game!
Nicholls plays next at Murray State on Saturday. It maybe an interesting watch to see how another MVC team expected to finish high in the conference plays against Nicholls. It may give us an idea of how much improvement we will have to make to compete against a top conference foe.
Coming back to this thread for one reason. Nicholls State is 7-0 in their respective conference. This win is slowly getting better.

You put the whammy on them. Lost to McNeese St. tonight.
