ARC Showdown: Beacons Seek Revenge as Slumping UNI Looks to Reset
Valparaiso looks to avenge a December loss while Northern Iowa leans on defense and discipline in a pivotal Missouri Valley Conference matchup.
The Panthers of Northern Iowa (12–6, 4–3 MVC) stagger into the Athletics-Recreation Center looking to halt a three-game skid as they take on the Valparaiso Beacons (8–10, 2–5 MVC), who are also searching for consistency in conference play.
Saturday’s matchup marks the second meeting between the two teams this season. The first contest ended in a 58–48 victory for UNI at the McLeod Center on December 29. That night, the teams were deadlocked at 22 apiece at halftime before the Panthers gradually pulled away behind a disciplined second-half performance. Will Hornseth led UNI with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Trey Campbell added 12 points and three assists. For Valpo, Owen Dease carried the offensive load, scoring 18 points as the lone Beacon in double figures.
Despite the earlier win, Northern Iowa enters the ARC reeling. The Panthers have dropped three straight games, most recently a 69–61 loss to UIC, and are now looking to steady themselves heading into the heart of conference play. Still, UNI’s identity remains clear. The Panthers play at one of the slowest tempos in the nation, preferring methodical half-court possessions and defensive discipline over pace.
That approach has produced results at the defensive end. UNI leads the Missouri Valley Conference in scoring defense, three-point field goal percentage defense, and defensive rebounding percentage. The Panthers defend without fouling, limit second chances, and force opponents to earn every basket.
Offensively, UNI relies on balance more than explosiveness. Guard Trey Campbell leads the team at 13.6 points per game and also paces the Panthers in assists at 3.8 per contest. Forward Leon Bond III adds 11.8 points and a team-best 5.8 rebounds per game, while a deep rotation sees nine players averaging double-digit minutes when healthy.
Conversely, the Panthers are not without vulnerabilities. They rank last in the Valley in offensive rebounding and are among the worst teams nationally on the glass at that end of the floor. Their slow tempo limits scoring opportunities, and despite their balanced attack, UNI averages just 69 points per game—better than only Evansville among conference foes. They also struggle to generate free-throw points, ranking near the bottom of the country in trips to the line.
That combination opens the door for Valpo, who arguably brings the more improved offense into this matchup. While UNI holds the edge in almost every major defensive metric, recent losses show cracks when teams attack inside. Over the Panthers’ last three defeats, opponents have shot roughly 56 percent from two-point range.
For the Beacons, efficiency inside the arc will be critical. Valpo is currently converting just 44.7 percent of its two-point attempts, a number that will need to rise against a UNI defense that excels at running shooters off the three-point line. Attacking the paint, feeding the post early—particularly to JT—and playing off kick-outs to dribble-drive threats on the wings could help create higher-quality looks. Other options will be the high low game and running screens to flash cutters through the lane. Could we see more consistent minutes out of Tucker given his better offensive skill set and UNIs relatively small frontcourt? Pushing the pace offensively in transition could be another point of emphasis, as UNI is far more effective when it can set its defense in the half court.
Defensively, Valpo’s best chance may be to disrupt UNI’s rhythm. The Panthers rarely turn the ball over, a byproduct of both discipline and tempo, but sustained ball pressure could force them out of their comfort zone and could speed them up.
With both teams hungry to reverse their recent struggles, Saturday sets up as a physical, hard-fought Valley battle. Valparaiso will lean on home-court advantage as it looks to avenge the December loss, while Northern Iowa will try to reassert its defensive identity.
KenPom projects a narrow 63–61 UNI victory, giving the Panthers a slight edge and the Beacons a 43 percent chance to pull the upset. In the Missouri Valley, however, a two-point projection is essentially a toss-up.
A strong crowd at the ARC could make the difference. If you can make it, come out early, bring the energy, and help remind UNI that stepping into Valparaiso is never an easy day. If you don’t have a seat yet, come over to Section G and get professionally rowdy as we are louder in numbers.
SIDE NOTE: If you are a student there is a new half-court shot promotion for the MBB and WBB games. One student is picked to shoot a half-court shot for a $1,000 prize, $1,000 is added to the pot each game until someone cashes it out. It will reset back to $1,000 after the made shot and increase until someone else hits it. This I hope brings the students out to support the team.
Im gonna yell at his game ... although Ill have to sit with a UNI alumnus...Brian Ill be in valpo camo might say Hi
Is this the day we honor Hall of Fame and Rowdy? And this is the turnout? The chair backers were only in their 60s and 70s when Rowdy played, so I expected more folks in thise chairs to see one of the most popular players ever . And who reached the NBA for sine games. Good to see some folks in the upper bleachers though.
Up 15-6 amd.the place.is rocking!! Or not.
woof woof. Shot clock must be turned off
They try to push people to the bleachers as it looks better on tv. Chairbacks are a pretty penny compared to the 15 for bleachers
So proud of this team. They pivoted and figured out how to win. Well done
This one goes in the a win is a win file.
Got it done even with Prince Rakim and JT struggling on offense. Owen Dease is him. Our defense has been fantastic all year. Happy to get a win for Ryan. Maybe the best atmosphere in the ARC this season?
Lost count! How many did we play vs their bench use?
Anybody have an attendance number? Looked solid on TV, I know seniors athletes being honored helped drive students there... But very nice to see an active student section again. I know it helps, RP & Team are very thankful when the students come out. Saw they went to a swim meet yesterday, also nice to see.
Our depth is proving to be the difference along with Powell willing to make lineup adjustments (More so than Lottich). Outside of Dease we don’t have a consistent scorer game to game, so the depth matters. Too bad no more Saturday home games, need the fans to come out. Schedule looks favorable to rip off some wins here the rest of the month and hopefully build crowd support! Thus far outside of Kentucky, we’ve not been blown out of any games this year. Attendance 1,863
