Newest post on The Victory Bell makes a great argument for Darius being the Most Improved in The Valley.
"I’m going to pull the curtain back a little bit here and if this gets me in trouble with Mike Kern or the Missouri Valley Conference office, I’ll agree to wear a St. Louis Cardinals hat and pose by the Ozzie Smith statute."
Can I get a copy of this pic? 🙂
I think you should have to kiss the 1982 World Series ring of Ozzie Smith too! Of course he is in Jupiter, FL during spring training at the moment.
This went up last week in case anyone missed it. Todd Ickow and I went through the 2023-24 Valpo season.

If you're interested in learning a little more about how The Victory Bell launched, I'm doing a zoom version of a talk I gave on campus last week. This is through Valparaiso's alumni Lifelong Learning series. Free of charge.
Assuming we get the usual over/under episode before the regular season starts, when can we expect that to drop?

A version of this will be coming later this week after the season opener.
I would really like to read a story about Roger Powell's vision for the men's basketball program in the New NIL landscape. A one on one interview would be great. As a fan, I have trouble seeing how to navigate the rebuild that Powell has described before and I would like to see this from his perspective.

I second this, and a big part of it would have to be some pushback on the idea that he can just keep doing what he’s doing and “move on to the next recruit”. He hit back to back grand slams with b2b Freshmen of the Year awards and it didn’t even get us a .500 record with both of them on the same team. Even assuming the FOY award continues to be a Valpo exclusive award, it needs to be coupled with some success in the transfer portal if we actually want to win.
If he wants his job to exclusively be develop talent and then congratulate them on their big check from the bigger schools then he should apply to be the next manager of the South Bend Cubs.
Had a blast writing today’s story about Darren Rovell and the 1998 ticket.
What is your favorite piece of Valpo memorabilia that you own?
Probably two. The first is a basketball celebrating the run to the sweet sixteen, signed by Homer, Bryce and Scott. On top is Homer's book, also autographed. The second is a football celebrating the conference title in 2003, signed by the entire team. It sits on top of Dr. Baepler's book on the history of Valpo.
Not memorabilia, but a memory. I was down at Valpo recruiting upcoming graduates and had a 30 minute conversation with Homer in his office. The memory of the entire conversation is so great.
An old Valpo jersey signed by a good number of the 2012 team. Thing is so old and ratty that the gold has turned more of a neon green

Similar, I was at a Valpo event at IUPUI with Homer at the same table. At the end he asked me if I would drive him back to the hotel the team was staying on the north side of Indy.
What a weekend at Valparaiso!
Beginning Friday morning and going until this afternoon, The Victory Bell published nine stories that included 12 one-on-one interviews and three press conferences. Four of the five games this weekend went to overtime. Most importantly, there were three wild celebrations at the Victory Bell, including a late night gathering with the Valpo Bowling team. In case you missed any of it, here are the links.
If you are not yet a supporter, I'd like to think the 10,181 words I wrote this weekend are a good value for $5.99/month or $59.99 for the year.
Nov. 14 - Forever Teammates
Nov. 15 - Hard work is paying off for Molnar
Nov. 15 - Deja Valpo
Nov. 15 - Beacons clinch semifinal berth with thrilling win
Nov. 16 - Preston gets fresh start with the Beacons
Nov. 16 - Beacons find identity with strong second half
Nov. 16 - Young Beacons earn stripes in OT loss
Nov. 17 - Valpo Bowling rolls to tournament title
Nov. 17 - Four Downs with Andy Waddle (Post-Stetson Edition)
As a paying subscriber, I can attest that Paul was a one-man VU sports section covering this long weekend, and it happened to be a stretch of some wonderful successes for VU teams. I happily and enthusiastically recommend a subscription.

Your doing great Paul, as the Dean of the Valley beat writers you deserve another steak 🥩 after this weekend… in all seriousness I appreciate your commitment to covering the various sports and providing an outlet for us all to get to know the various teams and their accomplishments better. It’s always good to see you at the game. Keep up the good work!
