Whoever performs well will play. Sometimes upper class man dont perform as well as underclassman. That doesn't mean that it's a "sign" of anything.
Actually it is who performs better who plays. For instance, if one of Valpo's useless "big men" last year could have played better than Kaspar Sepp the team would have immeasurably been helped. So if the upper classmen are not playing as well as an incoming freshmen it is likely to be a bad sign.
It's not a sign of anything. No roster is composed entirely of seniors. Because sometimes a senior isn't as good as a junior or a sophomore ect ect. It's not a sign of anything if an underclassman beats out an upper class man. That's just called basketball

I have no idea what to make of this team. Moreover, I don't know if it's even remotely realistic to think in terms of growing a player so that he's ready to blossom the following season.
I'll be more Zen-like if I simply accept that whatever happens, happens, and enjoy any good results that come VU's way.
We're now, essentially, an expansion team again, like Coach Powell's Year 1. Total crapshoot.
Watched that video and a couple others. Looks like Sader is more than solid defensively, can score at all 3 levels , several 3s, mid range, plenty of drives and dunks, big body for a freshman. I think he contributes almost immediately. When was the last time we got someone over a Power 5? Excited for the Fall, but expectations are low…
I think the level of recruit is definitely improved from the start of the Powell era. I know we lost them, but Coop and All doing so well definitely allowed for a higher level of recruit to come in.
@vuswim08-12 last time we got someone over a P5 was with incoming freshman JT Pettigrew, who also chose us over Arizona State!
We should get the Sun Devils on the schedule this season!
My guess is that a guy like Lucas Scroggins dominates at St. Peter's and their competition. I will track it long-term.
Then why did Scroggins get basically no playing time here? would it have been coopers minutes ? Why couldn’t it have been Sepp’s minutes? I know they were completely different players…In the brief moments he was on the floor he seemed beyond athletic , but mistake prone ?

I wonder how many of those 840 were encouraged to enter the portal by their coach (the idiom "shown the door" seems to fit)

Judging based off of the Bradley Baseball debacle. I'd say at least 1/4 of the portal is kids who were told to find other arrangements. And that's a low ball estimate

While I'm not banking on Charlie "What, me worry?" Baker to be all that concerned about the collateral damage of the portal system, the whole thing is increasingly tawdry, 2-way exploitative, and disturbing.
The "student-athlete" label is now pretty much a joke at the D1 level in sports where full rides are plentiful (basketball & football especially).
The last remaining roster guy from last year that I haven't heard about is Louth-m Coulibaly, did he find a landing spot or is he a portal casualty? I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up below the D1 level.
