Beacons, Flames Set for High-Stakes Valley Clash in Chicago

With Arch Madness looming and Missouri Valley Conference seeding hanging in the balance, Valparaiso and UIC will meet Saturday in a matchup that few could have predicted would carry such significance when the season began. The Beacons (7th in the Valley) travel to Credit Union 1 Arena to face a surging Flames squad that has emerged as one of the league’s biggest surprises. Both teams enter the weekend coming off statement wins, and both have plenty to gain — and lose — as the regular season winds down.

For Valparaiso, the road contest represents a final push toward the coveted fifth-place position, which would secure a first-round bye in St. Louis. The Beacons’ path is not solely in their own hands, but a win Saturday would keep the pressure on fellow Valley contenders.

For UIC, the stakes may be even higher. The Flames have positioned themselves for a tie in second place — a scenario that would have seemed implausible before the season tipped off.

UIC arrives brimming with confidence after dismantling Evansville by 38 points in its most recent outing. The Flames were dominant from start to finish, shooting nearly 60 percent from three-point range and showcasing the balance that has defined their season. Freshman Andy Johnson led the way, knocking down all five of his attempts from deep and finishing with 17 points and seven rebounds. Elijah Crawford added a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists, while three additional Flames reached double figures in scoring. The performance was emblematic of UIC’s evolution under head coach Rob Ehsan — a team that now executes on both ends of the floor.

Valparaiso, meanwhile, is coming off a result that carried both symbolic and practical weight. The Beacons snapped a 10-game losing streak against Bradley with a 79–72 victory. A loss that left the Bradley fan base bitter with the taste of Valpo’s successes.

Freshman JT Pettigrew battled through ankle issues to score 22 points, leading a balanced Beacons attack that featured four players in double figures. The win also brought milestones: Pettigrew moved into a tie for the program’s freshman rebounding record, and Valpo matched its highest conference-era win total since joining the Valley in the 2017–18 season. With 15 overall wins, the Beacons have already equaled last year’s total — and still have at least four games remaining.

Saturday’s contest will be the second meeting between the teams this season, but it will bear little resemblance to the first. On January 4, Valparaiso defeated UIC 66–59 at the Athletics-Recreation Center, holding the Flames’ starters to single-digit scoring in a defensive-minded battle.

Pettigrew scored 21 points in that game, while Justus McNair provided 12 off the bench. At the time, UIC was struggling, having lost seven of its previous eight games. That loss proved to be a turning point. Since then, the Flames have caught fire, rattling off an eight-game winning streak and posting an 11–2 record in conference play. What once appeared to be a year of possible struggle has instead become one of the league’s most compelling success stories.

While UIC’s offense is balanced — led by Ahmad Henderson (12.4 points per game), Crawford (12.0), and Johnson (11.7) — it is the Flames’ defense that has propelled them into contention. UIC ranks among the Valley’s top three teams in several defensive categories, including turnover percentage, steals, blocks, and both two- and three-point field-goal defense. The Flames prefer to attack inside, generating offense from two-point range and second-chance opportunities rather than relying heavily on perimeter shooting.

For the Beacons, success will hinge on handling UIC’s pressure and controlling the glass. Limiting offensive rebounds and protecting the rim have been challenges at times this season, and both areas will be tested against a disciplined Flames team. Valparaiso will need to generate clean looks, capitalize on its size advantage in the post, and take care of the basketball — much as it did in the win over Bradley. Extra possessions through offensive rebounding could prove crucial against one of the league’s stingiest defenses.

Predictive metrics favor the home team. KenPom projects a 71–64 UIC victory, giving Valparaiso just a 28 percent chance to pull the upset. Still, with the short 58-mile trip from Valparaiso to Chicago, the Beacons could benefit from a strong showing of traveling fans.

With postseason positioning on the line and momentum at stake, Saturday’s matchup promises intensity, urgency, and a playoff-like atmosphere — the kind of game that defines March before the teams reach St. Louis. I am headed to Credit Union 1 Arena for this one, let’s hope it’s a successful ride back. Let’s go Beacs, keep it rolling.

Keeping UIC guards out of the paint and Valpo getting to the free-throw line. Curious to see what kind of crowd shows up for Valpo folks. Here we go today! Biggest game of the season IMO

A win would be great but a well played, hard fought loss wouldn't discourage me.

Why didn’t Sader play the last 10 minutes when he was the star of the game?

Biggest win of the year. Valpo needs to take care of business in the final two games and hope for help to join the top-5.

I LOVE IT! Flipped between Olympics and game but ended up watching basketball as the end was making me nervous. A few thoughts.

-These late close game inbounds make me nervous. Sometimes they execute perfectly, but other times... Like that attempted pass, steal and basket not as well.

-The NET. I dont know the equation but it seems like Valpo just keeps winning, but only inches up in that NET. I dont know implications, does the NIT or CBI care about NET? Would like to see a jump after one of these wins, maybe this coming Monday?

-Who are you rooting for Bradley vs ISU Red this evening? Hate to say it but I say Bradley because ISU Red is 10-7 conference, easier to overtake them in standings. UNI vs Southern has to be SIU as UNI is 10-7 as well.

Ten wins in the MVC.  Why not get to 12?  Great job VU.

Root for Bradley and SIU. If UNI and ISU lose we are tied with them.
