@mwsportsfan I dont know how ESPN does their metrics for attendance, but it has been off in both the positive and negative direction. My assumption is your inquiry that it is ticket sales
Boxscore now up and we played 12 with Hopoi and Thomas trailing our field with 7 minutes each. That was reaching deep to find some scoring who could also defend and rebound. February usually means shorter bench use but we can wait and see.
Good win! Just wish these developing teams would stay together for more than one year.
With the very difficult opening 40% of conference play, my hope was for a 4-4 record after the first 8 games. However, sitting at 3-5 is not too bad if the team takes care of business the rest of the way, maybe 8-4, since the remaining games include a much more favorable schedule. A final conference regular season winning record of 11-9 should realistically be in reach.
few answers to contribute that I’ll say in replies, trying to present without commentary.
@mwsportsfan athletics department asked all athletes to come to the game as part of all sports reunion/hall of fame weekend. That was the majority of the student section, although there were definitely more other students there than normal.
The basketball team attended 6 of the 32 events of the swim meet yesterday (about 20% of the 2.5 hour long meet).
@rezynezy the lower bowl was certainly over half full, but the mezz was not close, and that contributes to the attendance number more than you’d think. ESPN does not compute their own attendance numbers, those numbers are reported by the athletics department. While I’m not sure whether or not student tickets are included in that number, I can confirm that the student entrance sees many students enter without having their ticket scanned.
also to @rezynezy - the officer who is the pep band drummer is VUPD Chief Chuck Garber. However, as was apparent today, while the pep band roster/email list may have 30-40 people on it, there will never be close to that many performers this year.
@sp37 I remember Chuck from when my family used to attend the 5:30 mass at St Paul. Still good to see him keep it up after all these years
I was also under the impression that the mezz and the lower bowl were about equal in their numbers. I understand the mez is larger,.but I thought the lower bowl being a bowl made up the difference
I have asked the athletic department how attendance is reported as recently as last month. I was told there are 3 methods that get used due to circumstances. Basically they look at the preticket sales, the scanned ticket numbers, and loose headcount of the game to develop actual attendance. That number is reported to espn. As others have said students can get in without being scanned a lot of times. There are other promotions and VIPs that probably attend without proper scanning and that type of stuff. Yesterday was the best crowd of the season attendance wise. There were more students than any other game. IMHO, there were more fans then what was reported, with all of the students, many came in right after game start.
Valpo moves up to 176 in the NET which is a 10 point gain from the previous 186
Owen Dease with another Newcomer of the Week award. If he keeps on track. Valpo may have its first Newcomer of the year. Which is just as good of an award as the FOTY
