Rankings are KenPom until NET gets released.
Hopefully shooting woes against Brescia was just getting some of the rust off. This game should be a good test of where this team is at as a baseline considering all of the new faces.
Starting 5 Predictions
Justus McNair
JT Pettigrew
Owen Dease
Brody Whittaker
Shon Tupuola
I got the impression Mark Brown Jr. was going to run the show.
Hope we can build off of last night and get a good start on the non-con. Sure hope our shooting gets sorted out.
Havent posted yet this year but have been closely following all portal/recruiting since end of last season...every vid of every new guy... seems top to bottom there has to be more athleticism and shooting on the roster now. Ill be at the ARC tuesday and am hoping RP can get the talent grooving before valley play. I expect kentucky will be somewhat painful but if guys can find roles and play hard we can surprise valley foes. Excited for eye test against E Illinois!
We saw the starting 5 last night. I don’t see why it would be any different:
Mark Brown Jr
Isaiah Barnes
Owen Dease
JT Pettigrew
Shon Tupuola
I don't know how they can figure out the details at the start of a season when almost all the players are unknown quantities who have not yet taken the court for their team in a game that counts, so I would think this is highly unreliable, but the oddsmakers have made Valpo a 7.5 point favorite for tonight's game.
I rarely sports bet but I do have a FanDuel account for the first week of college basketball. It seems to be the one thing casinos have not yet figured out. Their lines the first week of the season are beatable if you have do a little research on newcomers whose backgrounds are yet to be quantifiable.
This line follows that trend. Valpo -7.5 is free money and I will eat my words gladly if they don’t cover. In fact, I did something I never have done before and took an alternate line. $2.5 on Valpo -15.5.
This is a Valpo team that beat EIU by 30 last year and we have a much deeper, and probably more predictable, roster. We beat preseason top 5 Horizon League IPFW in a scrimmage. EIU was picked second to last in the Ohio Valley. I see this as a 20 point win, say 80-60.

Considering the school formerly known as IUPUI just dropped 100 (and was a danger to upset) Ohio State. I think it is safe to say the HL preseason rankings are some of the most unreliable in the country to this point
@rezynezy And considering OSU plays PFW this Friday we’ll get some more information.

Jeff Coffman has 11 years at IPFW and has 9 winning seasons,4 20+ win seasons, 6 postseason berths, and a 2-0 record against Indiana. They are coming off a 19-13 season. Not a guarantee they will be a winning team this year but signs point to that be a promising exhibition win.
I believe the PFW game was more of a scrimmage rather than a full game but I don't know what the format was. If anything it was a good tune up to loosen the gears but I wouldn't put much more stock into it past that

Of course it is to be taken with a grain of salt. Just a small side comment in a lighthearted comment about my opinion on the spread (which I could very easily be wrong about). Please take the EIU spread if you’d like.
At the first media timeout of the season, we’re gonna finish 5th in MVC, win the valley tourney. I like the wireyness and aggressive D so far, lots of lineup combos to look at!
Early and the defense looks great but they have to put the ball in the hoop in transition. Should be up 12-14 rather than 7.
The ghost of Virgil Sweet has been awoken. And not in a good way
