Comparing Valpo’s situation to power 4 schools Indiana, Northwestern, and Wake Forest is way off. Compare with Drake, Xavier, Belmont,  Butler, Bradley and Evansville.

Lets’s also go back to a perspective on why Valparaiso University provides non-scholarship football in their athletic portfolio.

I have to admire  Coach Waddle who has to face an interview on a weekly basis particularly when you lose 40-zip to a team that is suppose to be your peer.  Not so hard when you put up 30 points on a full scholarship FCS team.

So this week, Brandon starts out with..."One thing that obviously stood out was Drake had seven sacks..." The response from a coach wishing dearly that wouldn't be the start of the interview..."yeah, credit to Drake...our guys are capable...some guys maybe not getting their full body in front of the other guy...Drake did a good job creating pressure...we can be more stout with our fundamentals offensively being a little less predictable..." and so on, only to next face the punting disaster next.

Brandon is as gentle as possible but I certainly don't envy Coach Waddle when the result was pretty embarrassing.  Here's to a much improved effort Saturday!

@david81 Unfortunately for Valpo( and Brad Pitt) There is about as much truth to the movie Moneyball as there is truth to the movie Rudy

@rezynezy, as I recall, the book (as opposed to the movie) was much deeper and more thought-provoking, suggesting there are ways to identify talent that richer teams might overlook.

Perhaps Coach Powell has already been using a version of that with MBB, and the results have included Cooper Schwieger and All Wright. However, the NCAA transfer portal is even more of a challenge than MLB free agency when it comes to retaining players.

VU has attracted of lot of genuine student-athletes to its football team -- good young men seeking a quality education in addition to playing football -- but I fear that this "rebuilding" stage will continue indefinitely until the program can find some advantage that overcomes the low budget and modest facilities. I don't know if it's possible -- I don't know if there are schools out there that provide some lessons.

@david81 My philosophy was that you would do well to thrive off of local talent. This goes for all sports and not just FB. Being out recruited in your own home by Iowa schools(Drake) is unacceptable
