This seems like a good lesson for distracted drivers who like to think it isn't necessary to always have your eyes on the road.

Other Sports / Horizon League Baseball Race
May 13, 2012, 10:12:24 PM
Since Wright State swept the YSU Penguins this weekend they remain 1 game ahead of the Crusaders in the HL baseball race due to Valpo dropping 1 of 3 to UIC at Em Bauer Field. This coming Thur, Fri, Sat Valpo hosts YSU and the Raiders visit Hank Aaron Field in Milwaukee to face the Panthers in the last regular season series of 2012. Milwaukee knocked off our favorite departing HL member, Butler, three times in Milwaukee this past weekend. So in three series there were 2 sweeps but Valpo lost one at home to UIC with Wild pitching because you know who jinxed them. Just kidding  ::)

Do you think that Ohio State would offer him a free education since he brought them so much revenue over his freshman year?

Seems like a great argument for not leaving school early or gambling so much on your future.

Talk about dumb and dumber.

First you don't go see your ex-girlfriend for dental needs after breaking up with her. Second, you don't remove your ex-boyfriend's teeth just because your mad at him for breaking up with you. I'm not sure which was the poorer decision.

Lady Antebellum will play at the Henryville prom! Their rival, Silver Creek HS, also made a video supporting Henryville getting the band to play at their prom. I really enjoyed their school spirit. As the Henryville students finally started school this morning at MidAmerica Science Park in Scottsburg their school spirit should make everyone proud.

Sports Talk / Final Four
March 31, 2012, 07:09:33 PM
Sure would help the Final Four if there was a mid-major or at least Indiana or Vanderbilt in it. Both have beaten Kentucky and the drama would be more enticing. Who cares if Pitino beats Calipari. The only Italian I'm really concerned about is Capobianco

They have certainly improved. David West, George Hill, Tyler Hansbrough, Danny Granger, Roy Hibbert, Paul George etc. have all made great strides. Currently 5th in the east and will make the playoffs again. Yet Larry Bird is begging for fans in his new ad campaign.

http://www.indystar.com/article/20120329/SPORTS0605/203290337/Butler-s-Ronald-Nored-takes-over-Brownsburg-basketball-coach

Ron Nored, Butler senior guard and team leader, has started his post college career rather quickly by being named the head coach at Gordon Hayward's secondary education institution, Brownsburg High School.

Though Nored has no high school coaching experience, he has coached two years of summer travel basketball. Hill said Nored's reputation in basketball and the classroom outweighed his inexperience as a coach.    Hill=Greg Hill, Brownsburg athletic director

Hill said. "He's going to be learning as he goes on some of this, but we just think he has some attributes that would be almost impossible to find as a candidate."

"This is a team that is building from a group of young guys, and that's exciting for me," said Nored, who added that a phone call to Hayward convinced him to pursue the job. "The opportunity to coach 4A basketball is something I felt like I couldn't pass up."

Sports Talk / Indiana 4A State Championship
March 25, 2012, 01:54:17 AM
If you are RJ Hunter of Pike Twp (northwest side of Indy, roughly I-465, on north and 38th St on south) I think you are glad your dad, Ron Hunter, Georgia State coach, was not at the state championship game in Bankers Life last night. I just didn't get the feeling that RJ left it all out on the floor like Gardner of Carmel did. I can't believe Ron would have been happy at all about his son's effort. I realize that RJ was showing signs of illness but don't you think in Ron's mind "if you can play, you can give great effort" is his motto?

Congrats to Carmel on their 108th state championship in all sports.

Sorry, no pictures of northern Indiana gyms past Muncie Central. But I thought those of you wanting to see what the least populated section of the state looked like might appreciate seeing these gyms. The largest is Southport's gym because New Castle's Chrysler and Anderson's Wigwam are not in these pictures, that I remember. You probably already know that Henryville's gym is unusable due to their March tornadoes. There are many old buildings from before consolidation in certain school districts.

I set it up from oldest to newest. These are someone else's pictures that I found on the internet. I was looking for video or pictures of the Hatchet House in Washington, which was shown today during the state championship games on TV by the IHSAA, when I found these pictures. Sort of priceless really.

Ooops, noticed one of East Noble gym up by Fort Wayne in Kendallville got in there. Manchester is north of Muncie too, maybe Frankfort (home of the Hot Dogs) too. Okay, maybe Marion too.

P.S. There is a former Valpo player in one of the pictures. I couldn't help it.

Sports Talk / IU game & bad storms

Really bad storms in Indy area tonight. Hope we don't get any tornadoes and the TV doesn't go out before the Baylor game ends and the IU/UK game.

Baylor has 40,000 applications for 3,000 freshman spots.

http://www.stltoday.com/sports/college/baylor-has-made-remarkable-rise-of-redemption/article_a74e6d92-faf0-5c00-b585-892626715fbe.html

"It's almost of epic proportion," said Bob Beaudine, whose executive search firm brought men's basketball coach Scott Drew and athletic director Ian McCaw to Baylor nearly nine years ago in the aftermath of a tragic scandal that shook college sports like nothing before.

Baylor President Ken Starr _ yes, the former independent prosecutor best known for his investigation into the Clinton White House and the Monica Lewinsky scandal _ believes athletics provide a voice through which the university speaks to the entire world.

"I'm so proud of the way our athletes use their God-given gifts coupled with their very hard work to bring great joy and pride to all of Baylor nation," Starr said. "The voice of Baylor athletics is quite eloquent right now."

While hard to determine the true impact of athletic success on freshman applications, the numbers have drastically increased.

There are more than 40,000 applications for the upcoming fall semester for only about 3,000 freshman spots. That's up from 15,458 applicants for the Fall 2005 class, right after the Lady Bears won their first national title. Average SAT and ACT scores for incoming freshmen also have significantly increased during that time.

No it wasn't the Ohio Bobcat basketball team's impact on Michigan's and South Florida's seasons, but a boulder did roll into a house in Athens, OH

Peyton Manning is gone. Andrew Luck would have been better with him on the same team. Peyton will not be as happy on another team.

Boy, has this been a rough night!!!!

On The Horizon / Wright State CW color guy
February 15, 2012, 07:16:03 PM
I'm watching the Detroit at Wright State game on HLN. The color guy that they have assigned who is the same color guy who did the Valpo at Wright State game is so bad he's incredibly painful to listen to.

He uses so many words to say nothing! He talks more saying nothing than the play by play guy.

I can't believe they use him.

I understand he's an accomplished coach of some kind but he is so awful it's not worth listening to him.

Detroit led 40-33 at halftime.

Why?

I watched the end of the Green Bay game and our defense wasn't all that bad. The Phoenix just played exceptionally well and shot extremely well. Why have so many teams shot so well against the Crusaders?

Why does Purdue get to host a high school tournament and Butler can not?  What is so scholastic about the tournament that Purdue is hosting?

In the CSU/WSU game the Raiders showed they can play the defense needed to win games. CSU barely pulled it out in the last second with a tip in by D'Aundary Brown for a 45-43 win. It was a very intense defensive game.

Milwaukee pulled away from Loyola in the 2nd half at Milwaukee. The Panthers won the battle of the boards 42-20, they only had 7 turnovers and scored 34 points in the paint. Milwaukee trumped the Ramblers 59-41 as the Panthers played some very stingy defense also.

Green Bay barely outlasted UIC in 71-68 game in GB. UIC made 7 of 9 three pointers in the 2nd half to keep the game close but when the Flames were 3 points down and the clock winding down at the end of the game UIC's Daniel Barnes was in the midst of putting up a game tying three pointer but the ball was poked away by GB and the Phoenix ran out the clock.

A better YSU Penguin team beat a depleted Detroit team 64-61 at Calihan Hall in Detroit. The score at half was 35-34 YSU and the game was close all the way. In the end Chase Simon scored with 1.1 seconds left to make it 62-61 and fouled YSU's Kendrick Perry, who had 13 points. Perry promptly made his 2 free throws for the win. DuShawn Brooks had 24 for YSU. Good road win for the Penguins who are 5-1 and looking fairly strong as compared to previous years.

Sports Talk / #1 NC and #4 UConn fall
November 27, 2011, 02:04:43 AM
Some big stories in NCAA basketball.

#1 North Carolina falls to UNLV 90-80.

After North Carolina took a 42-38 halftime lead, U.N.L.V. opened the second half with a 14-0 run as the Tar Heels missed their first 10 shots. The Rebels built a 77-63 lead on Lopez's basket off a rebound with 5 minutes 39 seconds left.

Rebels fans stormed the court at Orleans Arena after the final buzzer.

As you can see a bad start to the 2nd half can happen to anyone.

#4 Connecticut falls to Central Florida 68-63.

Jeremy Lamb scored 15 points, but the fourth-ranked Huskies blew a 17-point lead in the second half of a 68-63 loss to Central Florida in the semifinals of the Battle 4 Atlantis on Friday.

Connecticut finished with 13 turnovers in its first loss since March 5 against Notre Dame. The defending national champions had won 16 straight games.

"I can't be more disappointed in how we played," Coach Jim Calhoun said. "We just stopped playing. We couldn't even get the ball inbounded near the end. Nobody stepped up and it was a complete disaster for us."

You got to wonder if St. Peters will melt down like Valpo did against OSU at the beginning of the 2nd half.
#173
I think a lot of us used to joke about the fact that CSU had no fans. But if you take a look at their board now it is alive and active. Winning will do that although the Vikings weren't exactly losing when they had Norris Cole and J'Nathan Bullock.

On The Horizon / YSU lost to Penn State Wednesday 82-71
November 25, 2011, 08:09:53 AM
Blake Allen had 25 points and was 7 of 12 from beyond the arc, Kendrick Perry had 23 points and was 5 of 8 from the trey line. Impressive numbers from the guard combo at YSU. Damian Eargle had 8 points in 20 minutes of playing time.

http://www.centredaily.com/2011/11/25/2998597/frazier-leads-lions-over-youngstown.html

UNIVERSITY PARK — Thanks to a remarkable first half from Tim Frazier, Penn State built a huge lead and held on for an 82-71 men's basketball victory over previously unbeaten Youngstown State at the Bryce Jordan Center on Wednesday.

Frazier scored 14 points and assisted on eight of the Nittany Lions' 10 other baskets as Penn State raced to a 44-26 halftime lead. The Nittany Lions, who have struggled from the field, shot 60 percent (15-of-25) overall and made 7-of-10 3-point attempts against the Penguins in the first 20 minutes.

"I would say those two kids (Allen and Perry) are pretty good," Chambers said. "I knew they were better than that in the first half. I watched those guys on tape. They were really talented. They can really shoot the ball. That's the same team that beat a good Butler team last year in February. We didn't take them lightly at all."

The Penguins made 10-of-15 3-point attempts to stay within striking distance in the second half. They got as close as 58-49 with 11:31 remaining, but Jermaine Marshall sank a 3-pointer to put the Nittany Lions ahead by 12 points.

The lead stayed in double digits until Allen's 3-pointer with 50 seconds left cut the margin to 77-68.

The Nittany Lions overcame 18 turnovers and going 19-for-31 from the foul line. Penn State shot a season best 57 percent for the game (26-for-46) and 50 percent (11-for-22) from 3-point range. Youngstown State shot 39 percent (24-for-61) overall, but 52 percent (14-for-27) from long distance.

http://www.daytondailynews.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/dayton/wrightstatesports/entries/2011/11/23/wright_state_pushed_around_lat.html

"The only time we guarded was through the first media timeout of the game," Donlon said. "(That's) where we guarded and played like the way we play."

North Florida (2-4) shot 57.1 percent in the game, including 23-of-33 (69.7 percent) inside the arc. With good-sized guards, the Ospreys of the Atlantic Sun Conference got 19 points from junior Jerron Granberry and 11 points from 6-6 Travis Wallace.

Wright State countered with 15 points from Julius Mays and 13 points and seven rebounds from A.J. Pacher, but the Raiders watched North Florida pull away in the second half.

"Any time we had a couple stops in a row," Pacher said, "we couldn't keep it up."

North Florida used a 13-0 run spanning both halves to go up 37-29 with 16:59 left. Wright State responded with a Mays 3-pointer, and the Raiders eventually whittled the deficit to three points (47-44 with 9:06 left) on two straight drives from Mays.

From there, UNF outscored Wright State 22-8 while continuing to put in shots.

Gordon Hayward was the guest commentator on the WNDY broadcast of the Savannah State at Butler game last night while he waits out the lockout that keeps him from starting his season with the Utah Jazz. One comment that Hayward related was:

he called Ron out for selling the foul... When he went to the floor he was saying that he's fine, because he was selling the foul like Matt taught them all how to do...

You always knew Matt Howard always over sold it when he was fouled. Now we have comments collaborating that Howard was a huge faker from one of his teammates.

On The Horizon / Butler at Evansville
November 12, 2011, 04:23:49 PM
Andrew Smith just caught a 3/4 court pass from under the Evansville basket and laid it in for the field goal with 0.9 seconds left to lift Butler to a 71-69 win over the Purple Aces in Evansville's new Ford Center. It was another what almost seems typical of a lot of Butler teams "right-down-to-the-wire-finish." What an exciting game!

Butler always seems to find a way to win all these last second shot games. Except of course when Gordon Hayward missed that final shot against Duke in the National Championship game 1 1/2 years ago.
