Two additional points towards the comments above, then I will stop my rant against Chicago State.

You like their arena?  Chicago State's arena is one of the most glaring examples in this country of politicians using taxpayer money to build a shrine to honor themselves. Emil Jones was the leader in the Illinois senate and pushed for the state to waste taxpayer dollars to pay for an arena that was named for him.

I mentioned the $1000 primarily for this reason. My guess is that this is 'proceeds' and that, with needing to pay workers and other costs of having any game, Chicago State will send $0 to hurricane relief.

PAUL, hoping you can answer a few questions.  Listening to the radio broadcast from CSU, they made it sound like shots just weren't falling.  The listener was led to believe the players were open.

From being there, how much was missing open shots?  How much was our defense?

Or whomever else was at the game....Chairback?

Thanks guys.

Politics aside, since this is a basketball forum, it was a great place to watch a game.  Simple changes in the ARC could make the experience much much better.

Early on CSU had wide open threes and hit them.  I believe 12 of their first 15 might have been from the 3 ball.  You could see coach Matt fume at the players when this happened.  I would say our D was the main factor on why they didn't hit shots.  They did not have many wide open take your time looks.  We pressured them for sure.

I'm telling you this is a very fun team to watch.  It's going to take time but Feb/March will be some good basketball.

That's what I was hoping to hear, good defensive play is big for us.  I'm concerned that Golder and Burton are athletes who don't play defense consistently.

That being said, heard Golder had a great hustle block, sooo.....maybe I should just wait and see.

Take this for what it's worth after 2 meaningless exhibition games, but I've been following Valpo bb since the early '90's and have never seen a Valpo team with this level of talent, athleticism, team speed, and depth. How raw talent translates into wins and losses remains to be seen, but I will say this. I can't imagine anyone else in the MVC is at a higher level.

I got there late to the game at the Jones Convocation Center and heartily agree with your assessment. I was thoroughly impressed with this Valpo team and their raw talent. There aren't many teams that can compete with us getting up and down the floor. Whether that actually translates to victories is not a given but at the same time could lead to big upsets. Purdue and Northwestern better be on their games when we play them. What worries me the most is that a team with a very talented big man could do a lot of damage against our defense. It will be very important to shore up the defense all over the court and to cut down greatly on turnovers. I think the outside shots will start to fall as the year goes on.

I feel like there were holes in the Valpo defense that Chicago State was not able to take advantage of. When we play much stronger offensive teams (i.e. Purdue, Northwestern, SE Louisiana, Samford, etc.) we'll need to play better defense, especially down low under the basket, with less turnovers. CSU didn't have the big men that could score in those situations.

Great defense is a contagious thing.  Betcha they come around if they haven't already.

I wouldn't be concerned with Golder defensively. He's one of the best defenders on the team.

Golder is gonna be like Vashil, IMO, in that people will flat out love the kid.  He has an infectious personality, he loves basketball, he is dedicated to becoming the best he can be.  Follow him on Twitter and you'll see that.  If Matt told him he had to be the team defensive specialist, he'd do it -- I'm positive. This kid has alll kinds of upward potential because he has the athleticism to make it happen.
