Valpo Basketball / HL future article
March 25, 2016, 01:50:38 AM
Interesting reading. I think HL men's basketball rating will improve some the next couple seasons as I do not expect CSU to be down long. NKU will get better as transition to D1 continues, and UIC should be better than it was with a couple rising star players and a coach who seems decent. YSU is already losing HL frosh first teamer Andrews to transfer, no hope for much improvement there. Hope Milwaukee and WSU don't drop off too much with coaching changes. Milwaukee besides losing it's graduating seniors also granted releases to 3 other players so far. Springs, Jordan and Arians to start. Team did not like way Jeter was let go, and not fans of the AD. Maybe league can move back up to mid teens range in a couple years.

http://www.campuspressbox.com/2016/horizon-leagues-uncertain-future/

Not sure if Valpo has any real possible alternatives at this point. It will take school movement within the MVC or A-10 for us to be considered by an existing conference for a move up the food chain and out of the HL. Unless somehow only the best of HL merge with best of Summit or OVC. Not sure that is even remotely possible or beneficial. Also the travel issues could crop up again, depending on the school mix. Oh well, I'm sure Commish LeCrone has the solution. [emoji40]

Apparently Trey Lewis will be looking to transfer to a high major program for his final year of eligibility.

Cleveland State confirms top scorer Trey Lewis released from scholarship, can seek transfer

By David Glasier, The News-Herald
Posted: 03/30/15, 6:52 PM EDT|Updated: 52 secs ago

Cleveland State University redshirt senior guard Trey Lewis appears to be headed elsewhere to complete his final season of eligibility.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Lewis, a former Garfield Heights High School standout, averaged 16.3 points per game last season as the Vikings finished 19-15.

Lewis was a Horizon League first-team honoree as he established a program record with 96 3-pointers.

CSU coach Gary Waters on March 30 confirmed that Lewis has asked for and been granted a release from his CSU athletic scholarship.

Lewis is free to seek scholarship offers from other Division I schools. Because he'll be a fifth-year senior, Lewis will not have to sit out one season as he did after transferring to CSU from Penn State in 2012.

When or if he decides to transfer to another Division I school, Lewis will have to obtain a signed waiver from Waters and CSU.

Waters said he hasn't been approached by Lewis to sign a waiver.

On his Twitter account (@Treylew3), Lewis posted on March 29: "Everything's going to be alright."

Lewis' coach at Garfield Heights High School, Sonny Johnson, on his Twitter account (@sonnyjohnson32), has made several references to Lewis in recent days.

In one tweet, he wrote: "Nothing wrong with HIGH MAJORS calling about TREY LEWIS. Also staying at Cleveland State and getting 20 shots a game is not bad either."

Johnson, in another tweet, wrote: "School that have already contacted me about Trey Lewis - Purdue-Iowa State-Florida State-Dayton-Clemson-Illinois-Louisville-so many more."

"Georgia Tech and Ole Miss also just called for Trey Lewis," Johnson also tweeted on March 30.

This is the second straight year that CSU faces the loss of its leading scorer from the previous season.

After the 2013-14 season, sophomore shooting guard Bryn Forbes was released from his CSU scholarship and transferred to Michigan State.

Forbes average 15.6 points per game during his final season at Cleveland State. He applied for a medical waiver from the NCAA when he transferred to MSU, claiming the need to assist in the care of his ailing sister at the family home in Lansing, Mich.

At MSU this season, Forbes has started 24 of 38 games. He has averaged 8.7 points and will join the Spartans in playing in the trip to the Final Four.

Waters, on a recruiting trip to Maryland, declined comment when asked if he felt there was any linkage between Forbes' transferring and Lewis' apparent intention to pursue the same course of action,

"This program will be OK," Waters said.

Valpo Basketball / New Mexico Lobo's player injury
November 26, 2014, 04:25:03 PM
For the Valpo vs. New Mexico Lobos return game at the ARC coming up in about 10 days or so, on Saturday, December 6th, ESPN reports on an injury to UNM guard Cullen Neal, expected to be their top playmaker and scorer this season. Out 3-5 weeks per the report on ESPN.

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/11942059/new-mexico-lobos-guard-cullen-neal-ankle-does-not-need-surgery

Lobos' Neal doesn't need surgery

ESPN.com news services
Updated: November 26, 2014, 12:32 PM ET

New Mexico sophomore guard Cullen Neal's severe ankle sprain, suffered last week in Puerto Rico, will not require surgery, the school said Wednesday.

The timetable for Neal's return is three to five weeks.

He was injured during the Lobos' Puerto Rico Tip-Off first-round loss to Boston College. After scoring 26 and 23 points in New Mexico's first two games, Neal played 23 minutes against the Eagles and scored just two points prior to the injury.

Neal, who averaged seven points a game last season as a freshman, was expecting to be the Lobos' top playmaker and scorer this season. A year ago, he battled injuries and illnesses before being a key member of the NCAA-bound Lobos.

ESPN's Andy Katz contributed to this report.

Perhaps the player suspension will still be in effect when Valpo hosts Ball State on Saturday, December 13th. I ran across this news in an article I read on chicagohoops.com today. Will have to wait and see if the player is reinstated by then, or what the punishment will mean to the Ball State team. Sounds like a pretty key guy to me, being a pg for BSU. Just like us losing Lexus for season due to injury, losing your pg who gets you into your offense is always tough.

Ball State Suspends Zavier Turner

Category: Hoops 247 Network   Published on Sunday, 23 November 2014 12:04   Written by Hoops 247 Network

Ball State head coach James Whitford has suspended Zavier Turner indefinitely for a violation of team rules.

Turner, a 5'9 sophomore point guard, was named Freshman of the Year in the Mid-American Conference last year after averaging 12.1 points and 3.7 assists per contest.

In two games this season, Turner was averaging 12.5 points and 3.0 assists per contest.

Sophomore Kaleb Mallory, who came into the program as a walk-on, will assume the starting point guard role.

Valpo Basketball / Bryce radio/tv interview

Bryce was interviewed late-morning today on Comcast Sportsnet by Dave Kaplan (long time radio sports guy and David Haugh (Chicago Trib sports reporter). Simulcast on sports talk radio on 87.7, on a daily sports talk show hosted by Kap and Haugh. Was an interview prior to today's HL Media day held in Chicago. Kiefer Sykes from Green Bay was also in studio for an interview just prior to Bryce. No big news. Bryce said toughest part of his job is home scheduling.

Just an FYI.

According to Verbal Commits, a 2-star 2013 small forward listed as 6-6 and 220 lbs will walk on with Valpo this season. He is shown as a non-scholarship player who is expected to redshirt. His name is Chandler Levingston. This was reported on Verbal Commits today, 8/18/14.

http://www.verbalcommits.com/players/chandler-levingston

His hometown is listed as Chicago. From what I can find in looking around, he played at Stevenson HS located in the metro Chicago area, and then he attended St. John's Northwestern Military Academy for it looks like 1 year. It appears that he was part of the 2013 recruiting class for the UMKC Kangaroos, where he played sparingly last season as a freshman.

http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Chandler-Levingston-78271/

There is also a YouTube video about 8 minutes long showing him working out which I ran across when searching for his name on Google, for those who might was to take a look.

I hadn't seen this topic mentioned so thought I would bring it up. I know many Valpo and HL fans have strong opinions about Wardle and his "coaching" style based on all the accusations made and transfers out of the program last off season. Somebody at Green Bay obviously must feel he has done a good job to reward him with a new contract.

Maybe a good omen for the future? Would be a great addition as a full member someday! For now I guess it is a beginning to building a relationship between Belmont and the HL and the universities that make up the league. And we get some men's basketball scheduling benefits as well.

Valpo Basketball / Student Section of the Year promo
January 15, 2014, 12:50:36 PM
I Love College Hoops, as I think was done last year, is having a contest/promo where we have a chance to vote for our favorite student section of the year. Vote early and often for the Valpo's student section.  ;)  IMO, the ValparaiZone has done a great job this season cheering and showing their support for the Crusaders. Great job student section! Keep it going...!

I saw the promotion for this on Facebook today. Just do a search for I Love College Hoops. I wasn't able to get the link moved here correctly for some reason.

Welcome to Valpo's new basketball Assistant Coach Matt Lottich. He played his college ball at Stanford and has played professionally mostly overseas for quite a few years. He is originally from the Chicago area north suburbs.

Valpo Basketball / excellent coaches & great people
July 16, 2013, 12:48:03 PM
Valpo is blessed to have a group of not only excellent coaches, but great people as well. Here is an example and an article on Coach Roger Powell.

http://heraldnews.suntimes.com/sports/goss/18559722-419/goss-roger-powell-jr-expands-ministry-at-valparaiso.html

Goss: Roger Powell Jr. expands ministry at Valparaiso

by Dick Goss dgoss@stmedianetwork.com March 2, 2013 12:04AM

A conversation with Roger Powell Jr. invariably involves basketball and his ministry.

The former Joliet Township and University of Illinois standout is a minister who founded RPJ Ministries and previously was on a path that would have led to being pastor of a church.

In June 2011, however, shortly after his final season of playing pro basketball overseas, Powell interviewed with coach Bryce Drew for an opening on Drew's staff at Valparaiso University.

Powell landed the job. His ministry remains; it merely plays out in a different arena.

Coaching has been all I expected it to be," Powell said. "I really enjoy it. It is a great opportunity to impact the lives of young men. It is one of the most rewarding careers I could have chosen."

Valparaiso is a Lutheran-based independent university, and Drew emphasizes the importance of character and values. Powell is an ideal fit.

"Roger is doing a tremendous job," said Drew, known for "The Shot"that allowed Valparaiso to beat Mississippi State in the 1998 NCAA Tournament and later a starting guard with the Bulls. "He is a huge asset to our staff. He was an excellent player and has the potential to be an even better coach. He has a great passion for the game and he helps young men become positive influences in society."

Powell said coaching indeed may be his life calling.

"I am planning to stay with it, for me and my family," he said. "My wife loves being around the guys on the team and our daughter loves being at the games. I foresee doing this in the future."

Powell said former Valparaiso coach Homer Drew, Bryce's dad, is a big help.

"Having Bryce's dad around as a mentor got me thinking that maybe I will have the opportunity to be a head coach some day, and I'd like to do that," Powell said. Bryce's dad is one of the most amazing people I have known. He relates so well."

Valparaiso has enjoyed another successful season. After a key 73-64 win over Youngstown State on Tuesday, the Crusaders entered Saturday's regular-season finale against Green Bay with a 23-7 record. Whether they need to win the Horizon League Tournament to earn an NCAA Tournament bid is debatable, but no matter. The approach is to take it a game at a time.

"Obviously, we want to win every game we play," Powell said. "We don't worry about the tournament, we just focus on the next opponent. The win over Youngstown State put us in a pretty good position with the Horizon tournament."

Powell's duties as an assistant are many, which he enjoys.

"Coach Drew gives all three of us assistants a lot of responsibility," he said. I'm really big into recruiting. I've been doing that a lot. I hope to get more guys from Illinois here.

"I also work with our defense, creating different ways we can guard teams. We continue to work with the development of our guys. I bring in new drills that I've learned through the years."

On the recruiting trail, Powell said, "We try to look at character. We look at mid-major to high-major level kids. Then if a kid fits in with our style and high character, I ask how I can build a relationship with the kid. After we decide this would be great fit, it's let's go after him. And once we have that fit, let's build a relationship.

It's a more personal type of recruiting. I want to impact your life. When you get married, I want to be invited to your wedding."

While on-court preparation may have become more sophisticated, Powell said the game itself "is very similar to when I played. Basketball is basketball. Of course, I haven't been gone that long. I retired in 2010.

"It is different going from playing professionally to returning to college and getting back into the swing of college basketball. Since I left Illinois, skills seem to have improved in college, and there's a lot of parity, probably more than when I played."

Powell said he still keeps an eye on Illinois.

"I follow how Bruce Weber (Kansas State) and Bill Self (Kansas) are doing, too," he said. They're both in the Big 12. They were my coaches. It's cool to follow those guys."

Powell agrees with the majority opinion that the Big Ten is king in 2013.

"The Big Ten is the best conference in the country right now, obviously, with the success Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State and some of the others have had," he said. I'd love to see Illinois get back up to that level. I'm really excited for that to happen.

"But right now, my focus is the Horizon League."

Powell was honorable mention All-Big Ten his junior and senior seasons at Illinois. His final year, the Illini finished 37-2 and were second in the 2005 NCAA Tournament.

His pro career included several camps with NBA teams, a stint with the Utah Jazz, earning CBA Rookie of the Year honors, winning a scoring title and sportsmanship award in the NBA's developmental league and several season of international competition.

"Obviously, I could have kept playing for a while," Powell said. "But I am happy with my decision to stop. If I had kept playing, I would have missed the opportunity to coach in a program like Bryce's. I would have missed out on coaching at Valparaiso."

That would have been a mistake.

Calendar moves forward for Midnight Madness
By Michelle Brutlag Hosick
NCAA.org

Men's basketball teams will be allowed to begin their first practice – celebrated at many schools with Midnight Madness events – up to two weeks earlier than in the past, starting this fall. The proposal was finalized at the close of the Division I Board of Directors meeting Thursday.

Last month, the Legislative Council amended and approved the long-tabled measure that will allow men's basketball teams to conduct 30 days of practice in the six weeks before their first regular-season game. In the past, practice began roughly four weeks before the regular season.

A separate proposal that eliminated the requirement that the first practice begin no earlier than 5 p.m. on the first allowable day was also adopted.

The rule change brings the men's basketball practice start date closer to that of the women's teams. Women's basketball teams begin no earlier than 40 days before the first regular-season game, with a limit of 30 days of practice.

The measures had been tabled since April 2012, when the Legislative Council tabled the bulk of the proposals in that year's cycle to allow the Rules Working Group to fulfill its charge of making the Division I rulebook more meaningful, enforceable and supportive of student-athlete success.

The rule creates a flexible preseason practice schedule that allows practice days and off days instead of the current schedule that leads to practice occurring every possible day. The more flexible approach provides coaches with the ability to determine how to use practice opportunities.

The original proposal allowed practice to start 40 days before the first game, but the Council members adjusted the rule to accommodate for Midnight Madness events often planned around the first men's basketball practice. Because a significant number of teams start playing games on the first day the rules allow it (the second Friday in November), the first day for practice would fall on a Sunday, which is not conducive to Midnight Madness events. Expanding the time period to 42 days allows the first practice to be held on a Friday.

The Women's Basketball Coaches Association expressed preference to maintain its current 40-day period as an expansion posed potential conflicts with a weekend when recruiting can occur.

Valpo Basketball / another transfer possibility?
January 08, 2013, 05:01:32 PM
According to chicagohoops.com, SLU transfer guard from Proviso East HS in the Chicago suburbs is considering several schools, and one mentioned in the article is Valpo. He is a quick and talented freshman point guard....perhaps Coaches Drew and Powell are working on yet another recruit from Illinois and the Chicago area.

SLU Transfer Carter Weighs Options

Category: Latest News Published on Tuesday, 08 January 2013 06:13 Written by Cavan Walsh

Saint Louis University transfer Keith Carter is weighing his options as he looks to move on to a new school.

Carter was one of the top prospects in the Illinois 2012 recruiting class.  He ran the point on a Proviso East team that went undefeated in the regular season before falling to Chicago Simeon in the state championship game.

Auburn, Cleveland State, Cal State-Fullerton and Valparaiso are the schools that have expressed an interest in Carter, who is looking to make a decision very soon.

What will be most important for Carter when making his decision?

"The style of play and for the most part of somewhere I can come right in and play."

Carter, a freshman, is not currently looking at going the junior college route.

Valpo Basketball / future opponent from PFL
March 05, 2012, 09:26:58 AM
Posters have mentioned developing a basketball series with for example the MVC. Interesting article below that talks about the MVC philosophy on scheduling. It sounds like the Drake is looking to establish home and home series in basketball with schools who also are PFL members.

Per Valpo Men's Basketball on Facebook when asked when the final schedule will be released.
"When does the rest of the schedule come out? The plan is next Tuesday, once the Horizon League announces their TV schedule."

Sounds like the wait is almost over for the official schedule.
