I saw on my Facebook feed today the Head Athletic trainer is leaving Valpo at the end of the week. Also leaving at the end of this week per Facebook post is the Assistant AD for Operations. What's up?

As long as I'm on a roll, I need to get this out of my system. Based on a history of "strange" explanations about player/team issues in recent years, I take almost nothing that's said about things like this at face value.

Cases in point:
• In Matt's first year, we learn after a stunning upset tournament opening game loss to worst seed Milwaukee that a decision was made by someone to blow off going up to Detroit a day earlier than we did for our scheduled shoot around in a strange arena. As a result we scored something like 12 points in the 1st half and were never really in the game.
• In the aftermath, it also comes out that we did exactly the same stupid thing the year before in Bryce's last year, and also suffered an upset loss. We were the only team that did that either year. Were we ever given a reason why that decision was made, under 2 different coaching staffs, in back-to-back years, with the same disastrous result? Of course not. No one took responsibility for it, and no one from the media pressed them on it.
• Then there's the Jubril fiasco. He's suspended for an isolated cheating incident pending a ruling from the NCAA. A week turns into a month and then multiple months waiting for a ruling that finally came just before the season ended. So, Jubril's entire senior season is destroyed. Suddenly, the question arises - did the NCAA suspend him after 7 games and twiddle their thumbs all season before making a decision, or did Mark L. do that unilaterally to be on the safe side, not realizing the NCAA had no urgency to make a ruling? Did anyone (directly or indirectly) ever bother to explain how that went down? Of course not. Were we victims of a cold-hearted NCAA infractions committee, or was our own athletic department responsible for destroying Jubril's senior season by stupidly "going the extra mile?" Why did Alec Peters (Jubril's best friend) intentionally slight Heckler when he was presented the game ball for setting the career scoring record? Something smelled about that then, and still does.
• So, here we are. "I can't recall if it's 9 games or 10, let's call it 10," says Matt AFTER THE PO TWEET. Really, or is it some confusion by someone in the athletic department about the language in the ruling, so either or both ML's are thinking maybe we'd better just make it 10 to be on the safe side. Sounds kind of ridiculous, or is it?
Keep the roll going wh! Everything is top secret, or so it seems. I get health stuff due to HIPAA. The rest, I don't get the selective secrecy.

Drake announced today renovation fundraising and plans to upgrade the Knapp Center. Hope President Padilla
and the BOD noticed, and can convince some wealthy Valpo alums to donate to an ARC reno sooner rather than later. I know we have other needs as well...but Valpo Athletics is able to create valuable name recognition among other things for the university.

Let's see....the fight song:  "Hail Beacons.......You should have seen the ridiculous reply I received form the University after I replied to the notice from Pres. Padilla.  It was so sweet and flowery that it almost made me cry.  :(
What notice from President Padilla? I must have been removed from the ValpoU email list? Interesting.

Wowser!! What a collection of talent on the roster!! Hope they mesh together well and quickly!! Kobe King per Verbal Commits was a 3.7 star recruit and Wisconsin Mr. Basketball coming out of high school.

Wonder if anybody will use a redshirt season? Would love to watch the upcoming team scrimmages in the battle for PT!!

To vufan75 and VU2014,
I've long noticed that you diligently track recruiting activity and share current developments here on the board. I've also observed that when a prospect tweets about a visit or an offer, you often add something complimentary about the men's basketball program and the university for the prospect to consider. Great job of demonstrating fan and school loyalty at the highest level! Thank you.
wh
Thank you sir! Enjoy following the recruiting for ValpoMBB.

Ran across this dribbling drill on Twitter that 2023 Guard Dino Cook was working on. If I recall correctly, I think he is visiting soon.

Apologies if this has been posted in another thread but according to a survey that was just emailed out, the finalists appear to be:

Storm
Beacons
Gold
Sparks
Lightning
Tempest
Dunehawks
Lightning Hawks

Personally not a huge fan of any of them (why wasn't Knights an option? Seemed too logical). But the last two "hawk" nicknames sound like minor league baseball teams. Like we've tried too hard to be unique. And what is a "lightning hawk" anyway? I guess I'd reluctantly prefer one of the first six.
Another survey I did not receive. I'm sure others did not receive either. Wonder who decides who receives these surveys (or does not)? I know the university has my email on file.

The sky is falling at Loyola!  There are up to two!  Baylor Hebb (a 3*) is in the portal!
I think at one point Valpo might have recruited this young man.

Upon further review, per Rivals he was rated 3 star PG. Valpo is shown as one of many schools who recruited him.

So by next basketball season we might see a shield logo on the ARC floor. Let's see, who will that offend? Seems it could represent a battle or weapon of a warrior of some sort. Nope. No good.

I say go with no nickname, no mascot. Can't offend anybody that way. We will just be "The Valparaiso University". We just will have to bow out of the MVC mascot battle held over the summer I think. And if one is there get that Crusader mascot out of the Whiting, IN mascot exhibit.

My opinion, changing mascots because of a vocal minority is silly. This assumes a minority is driving this decision. I am bothered by the way this process went, with little to no transparency of results with dare I say most or many alums. Time will tell if donations are affected. [emoji102]

The strategy of the interim president announcing this now before President Padilla officially takes over is smart. Keeps him from at the start of his presidency having to announce a controversial decision.

Found this on Cam.  Pretty impressive to be listed as the #172 player in the Nation!  David Joplin is #144 and Cade Meyer #153.  Cam is the #6 player in Wisconsin.

Back last fall Valpo was recruiting Jeremiah Williams, who had transferred for his senior year to Simeon High School in the CPL. He visited Valpo, but decided to not commit to any school at that time.

Apparently Valpo is still in the mix per the linked article below. He says he's leaning to SIU now. Mullins has done a heck of a job at SIU in his short tenure. Loyola also is mentioned among his current suitors.

I think 3 games we will see next season are Valpo at Central Michigan, at Toledo, and hosting Charlotte. I think those were all home and home deals. I'd love to see us host SLU (doubtful IMO). Will we get Ball State back on the schedule? Another SIUE game? I'd like to see us play Belmont in a home and home along with Murray State also again. And maybe Western Michigan who we used to play somewhat regularly. Plus an early season neutral site tourney. Then still wonder if MVC will be able to get another annual "challenge" deal going with another conference? Last but not least a "buy" game with a P5 school.

Regarding the Central Michigan game student attendance, I believe the students were just starting finals, or hopefully preparing for them.  I guess the handful of Pep Band members is better than none but those few are sure a let down from what it used to be. I will say they are consistent...still playing music 20 years old, or at least it seems that way.  There just has to be a way to improve that particular game-day experience.  I wish I knew what is would be.
Regarding the Pep Band kudos to the young men and women who show up to play and cheer. The solution to a larger pep band can't be that difficult. Somebody in the Athletic Dept should call the Loyola AD and ask how they handle their pep band. Private school and they have made it work for them.

10-member band?

A. Practicing for some upcoming event
B. School is not in session
C. Pathetic lack of interest
D. Pathetic lack of support
E. C and D only
I thought some of the same things. MLB should chat with other MVC private school AD's to see how those schools work with pep bands. Has to be an easy way. Noticed were not many students in attendance either excluding the 10 band members. Maybe 30-50 or so range?

Not to harp on this topic but I have to agree with my Native Cheese Head.  The game day experience is something that can not be replaced for fans in the stands or watching on TV.  The beating of the drums, the swaying of students playing their trombones and trumpets, the crashing of hands and stomping of feet are all part of that experience.  The band, even as small as ours is, is part of that game day experience that brings great enthusiasm to all.  Last year the University made a great effort to bring in bands and cheer/dance squads from regional High Schools to fill in the gap over the breaks while students where away from campus.  Perhaps last night would have been another opportunity to do the same since our band was not available.  It was noticed the arena was half full (2,412).  Bring in regional kids to play at a college level and their parents can help fill the stands. Win/Win.

I'd say "win/ win/ win" because that added win is for the Valpo admissions department in terms of recruiting potential enrollees. LI that is a great idea. I believe that happened at least once last season. The athletic department just needs to nail down the schedule when students can't fulfill the band presence then solicit high school pep bands to fill in the gaps.

But here's the main thing (I think, because I am making an assumption here).  Make the pep band compelling to our musical students by (perish this thought) demanding a commitment and then.......   :o  paying them to practice and play. Paying a pep band director might help too.

Boys and girls, back in my day Valpo had a 125 piece marching band at football games that performed all the traditional stuff those bands (and today's HS bands) do. We have a student body that is bigger than most Indiana HSs and we can't put together a kick butt 25 piece pep band. C'mon man.
About 2-3 years ago I attended a Loyola game courtesy of a daughter of mine who worked at Loyola. We were happy to sit in the upper area (then unfinished) at Gentile with donors and others vested in Loyola MBB. I would liken it to Valpo's ARC Suite today except more of an open area in the arena. Sandwiches, salads, etc were served along with beer, wine, and soft drinks. I chatted with a nice man who I gathered had a job at Loyola similar to John Kuka's job at that time at Valpo. I specifically asked him about the Loyola pep band. He said he thought that Loyola had made changes and offered I think it was a 1/2 credit hour for pep band members and he thought they also were paid a small amount per game. They also appeared to have a director of the pep band who I'll assume was being paid as well. If Loyola can do something like that why not Valpo? It would be one way to offer something to the pep band members for their effort, time, and hard work.

The Band?    Tonight was the Rehearsal for the Christ College Presentation.   There were not enough members to compile a band.   They should be back for the game against the Fighting Hawks on the 17th at 1:30pm.
Thanks for info talksalot. Was wondering about the pep band. Amazing that scheduling peeps at Christ College and Athletics Dept couldn't work out having a pep band for opening night of the college basketball season!! Signature sport at Valpo gets little respect again. Disappointing to see that. Wonder how many other D1 schools won't have their pep band at their home openers?
