It is a bit ironic (?) incongruous (?) that a university associated with the Lutheran church and its historic traditions, a denomination that places a high value on music as a component of worship, has allowed music as a component of education to wither on the vine.  I would have thought that a robust music program would be another attractive element in student recruitment, let alone adding to the variety of campus life.

As an alumni of Valpo's music department, I can assure you that there is a robust music department at the university, including an exceptional degree track in Church Music.  What there is not, is an active and robust connection between that department and the athletic department.  Whether the fault for this lies with the Music Department or the Athletic Department, I have heard different stories over the years and don't know what's true.

In the reality of this day and age, if there is a desire to fund a decent student pep band, it will likely only be accomplished through offering it as a credited course (which I imagine would require Music Department involvement and oversight) or through paying the student musicians.

I've been a season ticket holder since graduating in 2010 and have never noticed an issue with the sound system.  My seats are in section C (lower section, mid-court).  Seems just like any other arena/gym sound system to me.

So should we read anything in to the fact that the "Coaches" page under Men's Basketball on valpoathletics.com is updated to show Roger as Head Coach, other assistants have been removed, but Rob Holloway still shows as Assistant Coach?

Glad I chose to flip over to the Chiefs/Bengals game.

Most music ensembles on campus (ie. VUSO, CCB, Chorale) are only 1 credit courses.  I don't oppose the idea of making Pep Band a 1 credit course, but don't think that's going to do much to drive participation.  Basically, most students aren't going to be motivated by the credit.

If the school really wants to get serious about it, the could go the paid pep band route, which is fairly common.  Many schools will pay a flat stipend for the season, and if you can't attend a game, you're responsible for finding and paying your own substitute.

This issue does affect Valpo basketball.

Read the 10 or so posts before mine...this board has turned in to a place to spew political talking points, not exactly what I call engaging basketball discussion...

I can get on board with Beacon.  Its not great, but could definitely have been worse.

What I can't get on board with is the logo.  Looks like a failed project from an Intro to Graphic Design class.

To be honest, they're sagging off of all of our shooters...and the way we're shooting, who can blame them?

Quote from: bbtds on January 29, 2021, 06:35:19 AMWas anybody else confused when Helm was taking Clay's FTs at the end of regulation? How does a guy get fouled and commit his 5th foul on the same play? Has anyone seen that happen before? To me that seemed like a strange call.

I don't think the TV announcers followed what happened very clearly.  From what I could tell, Clay got fouled, then immediately following that foul, Clay and Childs (I think) were both given technicals for yapping at each other.  The technical was Clay's 5th foul, hence he was out of the game and couldn't shoot the free throws.  Definitely an unusual situation.

Quote from: vu84v2 on December 22, 2020, 04:26:17 PMWould Valpo accept donations associated with other Lutheran groups?

Yes, and they have.  If memory serves correctly, the ELCA Pastor position at the Chapel was funded by a gift that specifically stated that the position funded by the gift would have to be a female, ELCA minister.

A couple schedule updates showing on ESPN.com right now, but I haven't seen anything announced from Valpo at this point...

12/17 - Home vs. Purdue Northwest
12/21 - Home vs. Mount St. Joseph

If we lose any more games we might see Little Sisters of the Poor on the schedule next...

That's what I played too. Valpo ML and the over.
Nice, man the O/U dropped to 130, I know EMU is holding teams to 55 but they played mostly questionable teams. If it stays under 130 somehow it will be because EMUs offense doesn't do much and not because they stop our offense. They wont be able to handle the Sackey/Freeman transition prowess   . If we score less than 60 don't scold me.
My parlay for the day
Valpo: +4WKU: -2 at Wright St.Mizzou: -24 against Charleston Southern

I took the over at 129 - I've done well taking the over on most Valpo games so far this season

So has anyone subscribed to the FloHoops  website to watch the games? What was the actual cost of the subscription. I understand it can be cancelled at any time. Some input woild be helpful. Thanks.

Just got my subscription - $29.99 per month - Just have to remember to cancel the subscription after this weekend so it doesn't auto charge for next month.

Found some of these great pics from 2007-2008 season.  Look at all the variety of instruments that are being played from a drum set, electric guitars, a tuba and even an electric violin.  I counted over 55 students playing in this pep band.
That is fantastic!!!!!!!

Ok - So I wanna give some context for these photos...

I'm one of the band members in this photo, and this was the only game I played in the pep band for in my entire 4 years at Valpo.  I was a music major and never participated in the pep band due to what I viewed as a lack of professionalism musically.  This isn't meant to speak poorly of those who did, I just had higher standards.  That being said, I don't think I ever missed a home basketball game during my 4 years at Valpo, was always in the student section, just not in the pep band.  I also want to be clear that as a music major, I was never discouraged from participating in the pep band.  For the particular game from these photographs, this was a nationally televised game (which at the time wasn't as common as it is today), and a group of about 12-15 of us music majors decided we didn't want the band to be poorly represented on national TV, so we showed up and played with the pep band for that one game

This is in no way meant to argue against the decline in the pep band over the past few years, as I believe the decline is obvious, just wanted to be careful in comparing it to the particular photos provided as that game was a bit of an anomaly.

So it has been a couple of days since signing day and still no report on basketball signees.  I presume the staff is buried with writing reports on all the signees.  I have seen one on Women's soccer and announcements via facebook on a couple of others.
