$153k as of 2 pm.

Goal is $1.1M.

Might get there, but looking grim.

They will probably contort something later today to allegedly meet the definition and exceed the goal. It would be odd to set that big a goal without something up their sleeve.

Guess I missed the $275,000 pledge.  From who to fund what?

A lot of funding drives will have matching donors up to a certain amount. One was announced as up to 250,000.  My guess is there are more, smaller ones as well and probably a few bigger donations they know will come in by the end of the day.

So if you don't raise the match amount, what does the matching donor do?

It's usually an up to amount: So they will donate dollar for dollar up to a certain amount. So if the target was 250,000 they would match up to 250,000. if we did less they would match the lower amount (although most give the full amount anyway they just use the match framing as encouragement)

The anonymous pledge was for $275,000 for a match to The Valpo Fund.  I don't think it applies to other contributions but my guess is that the donor will throw the total in in any event.

I found it interesting that athletics has gone to a very broad "go fund me" approach to individual program needs.  There 14 individual goals totalling 90,500 of wish for funds.  It appears that winning has its benefits as, for example, Volleyball had a goal need of 6,000 for locker room improvements and so far, they have raised 6,460! Others exceeding their goals included bowling and woman's golf, but other programs like soccer (6,610 raised) or baseball (6,075 raised) all did pretty well.  Of the total of 90,500 desired, at the moment,44,332 has been raised.

The website now shows that they are 86% of the way towards the goal of $2.5M.

I like how they gave a menu of options, including some very niche projects to support.

However, the Day of Giving caught me by surprise, even though I had recently mentioned it in a comment here. Other schools send out more frequent pings as the Day approaches, and they also spell out new giving options beforehand. I went back and checked my inbox and spam folder for emails sent by VU, and I could find only one email about the Day of Giving, sent as part of the April 4 weekly newsletter. I also received a flyer in the mail. But at least one additional shoutout, a day or two before the Day of Giving, would be very useful.

Interesting. I don't know why I didn't receive the same. Not that I'm a big $ donor, but I'm a monthly sustainer and I've committed to a bequest gift. Heh, maybe they figured (actually, correctly in my case) that the monthly amount adds up to near the max of what I can afford each year. LOL.

David's experience was mine as well. Development (I'm guessing here that they have the lead) tries hard to assemble accurate and germane distribution lists. However, I would guess, they don't have the budget, latest software or personnel to adequately organize, target and maintain them.  For me, the best source for Day of Giving info was actually right here, then the Athletics site (but even there it was spotty). Small will see how this event went and will make corrections more in accordance with what he just took for granted at Iowa State - just another benefit of Padilla's outward looking approach to things. I'm liking what I am seeing (controversies and all) in just the past 17 months. Stuff is getting done - and sooner than later.

And have I mentioned that I am ecstatic over Roger taking on this challenge?  He could have played it a lot safer, right?  So, in addition to all his other great qualities previously mentioned, he has a boat load of courage too. Love it.

Email just came out. A little over 1 million ( I think maybe slightly under their goal but don't remember) which is the largest amount for a day of giving yet. Couple highlights include 170,000 for Men's basketball alone and over half a million for the Valpo fund which is I think unrestricted scholarship endowment between donations and a match from an anonymous donor.

Here is the exact wording from Zachery King:

"On our 10th Day of Giving, we did it. Once again, Valpo people came through and gave an incredible $1,083,920 for student scholarships, athletics programs, and campus experiences – bringing our ten-year total to $7,522,579.

Alumni and friends gave more than 1,800 gifts, joining nearly 20,000 gifts from the last nine years. A record 255 donors made their first gift this year, and we welcomed a returning member of the Valpo family back to campus, with more than $170,000 raised to support men's basketball."

One could assume from these numbers that the alumni are really upset with the Beacon and dogs mascots!  :rotfl:

Well, maybe the troops can get fired up about Roger Powell?

What percent of the alumni gave to Valpo last year?

I believe you are right, vu72...I do think the Alumni are upset with the name "Beacons" and the dog mascots. I think the increase is because of Mr.Powell and a percieved new attitude concerning the MBB program.

I presume by now many of you have received a thank you note from a student regarding your gifts during the day of giving.  I think this is great, and perhaps, uniques to Valpo. I've now gotten a note from a student studying forensic pathology and one from a student who is a music major, intent on being a high school teacher with the additional hope of composing and producing music.  Great stuff!!

Honestly, I don't think many really care at all. Let's just get on with the winning.

Many of the MLS teams have no formal nickname at all. Your team is your team no matter what you like to call them.
