Valpo Basketball / Re: What will the decision be?
March 14, 2023, 10:05:12 AM
We've reached the point where not only have plenty of schools have both fired former coaches and hired their replacements. Yet complete silence from our AD.
If we're sticking with Lottich for whatever reason, we should have put out some kind of statement by now. If we're still 'evaluating the situation', then at least let us know that!

Don't know if we're on the carousel, but we've certainly been taken for a ride the last 5 years.

Absolutely unreal we have gone a week without a peep. Not even a "We'll be meeting with Coach Lottich soon to discuss the direction of the program."

This is all just chatter. We should be tanking for a high draft pick.

What concerns me about Greg is that it's been 7 years since the job opened up and yet he's chosen to stay exactly where he is while the demands of a DI job have gotten infinitely more complicated with the explosion of the portal and NIL.

Firing Lottich right now solves nothing, and it would be very disrespectful to the players that came back this season to play for him. They knew the score, and they deserve the chance to finish what they started. Besides, what coach is going to interview for a job in January? Coach K coming back?

That said, barring a huge turnaround, you make the move the day after the regular season is over so you can hit the road at the P5 tourneys for some interviews.

Valpo Basketball / We Need A Digital Ticket Exchange
January 05, 2023, 01:19:41 PM
We need a digital ticket exchange.

I have been wanting to take my 78 year old father to a game this year. He doesn't need handicapped seating but does need a chairback seat with good sightlines, so most of G,H, & I would work. But between my work schedule and him having days he doesn't feel very good I often have to wait until just a few hours before game time to grab tickets. I checked online and called the ticket office twice, once my call was not answered and once I talked to a student who was very nice but had no idea what was going on. There were no tickets that would have worked for him and we were forced to watch the game at home. Imagine my surprise to see hundreds of empty seats in the sections that would have been great for him.

Admittedly this is partially my fault, I did not renew my season tickets because I didn't want to pay $1,000+ for a poorly coached team and a rapidly declining game day experience. And this isn't the fault of the ticketholders, they paid for the tickets and they can do whatever they want with them. But there is no good way for ticket holders to resell their tickets. TickPick seems to be the only site with some reselling and it's only a few tickets that are more expensive than buying them directly from the school.

I have a couple of good friends who are Cubs season ticket holders, and if they decide not to go to a game, even last minute, it takes but a few clicks on their phone to put up their tickets and make part or all of the cost for that game back. I realize we don't have the resources of a major sports team but it seems silly Vu still uses paper tickets for their season ticket holders.

Just one more way Dr. Small is going to need to drag this program into the 21st century.

The day we joined the MVC should have been the day we told CSU we're never going to their building anymore.

Valpo Basketball / Re: New Valpo Team Name Ideas
August 17, 2022, 01:24:50 PM
As others have mentioned, the lack of transparency has been the most frustrating part of this from Day 1. The only hope I have is that the boondoggle precedes our current admin. Honestly I just don't care anymore. I can take getting clowned for a sh**** mascot if we're holding the MVC Trophy. Call us Beacons, Beagles, or Blowhards for all I care, just fix the damn program.

But let's credit where credit is due. It's an extraordinary feat in this day and age to have an idea that pisses off so many diverse groups of people that may not see eye to eye on many issues.

Hopefully the first thing he changes is the streaming tech. This stream is a mess.

So the new AD is younger than me. Now I'm officially old.

Kidding aside, he has a nice resume. Looking forward to seeing what he can do!

Sheldon to Gryffindor stings a bit. But it's probably a good fit. He is a talented player and Loyola is doing now what Vu did in the 90s and early 00s. Build a system and a culture. Insert talented players. Rinse. Repeat. Not everyone works out, of course, but you'll end up competing more years than not.

The new reality of college basketball is you're going to deal with transfers each and every year. Some going in, some going out. Where we run into trouble is each year 3-5 of our top 8 players head out. You have to have some continuity on the mid major level. For example, current tourney darling St Peters: Top six scorers are either juniors or seniors.

Won't spoil the content, but Paul's piece on the transfers is very damning of this coaching staff. It's time for a change. As in, immediately.

Valpo Basketball / Re: Thoughts on the season
March 07, 2022, 01:19:54 PM
3 Thoughts:

1. For those not subbed to The Victory Bell, PO had an excellent breakdown on player retention and the # of players in the championship game that had played 2+ years in the MVC. I won't spoil more but it's a deep dive and well worth a read.

2. Question for PO: Can we expect, or can you solicit, a comment from the AD on the MBB program? I don't think many of us expect he's willing (or able) to move on from ML, but I'll take even something bland like "I look forward to sitting down with Matt and figuring out how to better compete.....yada, yada, yada." I know he's a lame duck but I would feel a little better if MLB even acknowledged our last couple of years are not acceptable record wise.

3. It may seem like piling on, but I'm joining the chorus of those who will not be renewing my season tickets next year, assuming Matt is retained. The on court product has been covered here, but the atmosphere is also horrible. In addition to no pep band, I find it insulting that they run the same middle school boys club team out for 15 halftimes a year. I don't know of a better way to say "Screw your entertainment value" than that. I know not every game can have the Pacers dunk crew, but a handful of halftimes like that, a couple of local marching bands and/or a couple of Greek Life competitions, and you're set. And while we're at it, maybe let's find someone else to run the shot clock next year. We seemed to have 2-3 screw-ups there every game.

Clay is being a classless punk but he's a kid, I'm not mad at him. I'm mad at the coach who has allowed this program to become this bad, and a school who is too cheap to buy him out.

Sports Talk / Re: NCAA College Basketball Talk

This has nothing to do who was right about or who started the scrum. You turned the conversation to race, not me. You deliberately choose "angry black man" & "thug" in your description. My guess is you were someone who defending all of Bobby Knights antics back in the day as well. I would never call someone I've never met a racist. But that comment was.

I've enjoyed participating in this board, but when even this has descended into tribalism and name calling, it's time to take a break. I wish you all the best and I'll see you in October.
