Thanks for sharing this list of scores.  It helps point out how much more challenging December will be since we've beaten only only team with a winning record to date (and lost to the only other opponent with a winning record).  We'll either have some momentum heading into the conference schedule or know where we need to improve.

Dang, that BCU loss is not a good sign for their MEAC season.  Still in shock that Detroit is this bad...

I am not overly surprised by Detroit because if you look at their team they literally have no bench players who make contributions. They have turned into the Ray McCallum show with Anderson and Minnerath as supporting actors. Besides that there isn't too much to be worried about on that squad

Kent wins in OT but CSU won.  Not sure who we wanted to win the Kent game. YSU for conference rankings or Kent for our RPI.  I suppose it's a wash when considering that we play YSU twice going forward.

I could be wrong, but it seems that a YSU win would have actually helped more since you play them twice.  But I'll defer to the guys who follow RPI closer than I do.

The Chicago State game against Trinity won't make an RPI difference because Trinity isn't a D-I program. Sure, it's great to follow what our opponents are doing, but maybe less focus on the non-D-I games.

I'll just put the following in:

Don't read below if you're not interested in games with teams under the Div-I level

does that work? Can't miss that.

Just a little footnote to this score so people don't think that IPFW will be a pushover.  Frank Gaines and his 20+ point average was suspended for this game.  With Gaines in the lineup I would have expected IPFW to win this game.  He will be in the lineup against VU.

Of course IUPUI loses to Kansas City and FW loses to Navy after I proclaim them better than 50% of our opponents. That was actually because many of our opponents keep losing.

Nebraska is one team making Valpo look better. At half they lead USC 33-25 on BTN. Ray Gallegos is hot tonight with 3 of 5 threes. His catch and shoot has been terrific for the Huskers.

Bethune-Cookman with a Div. I win tonight.

Man - did they have a big budget crunch this year?  Funny to see them scheduling so many decent mid-major teams.  Creighton should be favored in this one, perhaps significantly so.

(Yeah, looks like they are 7-10 point favorites.)

A pretty clever comment from a frustrated Milw fan after losing by 20 at home to a 2-win Buffalo team:

What's remarkable is that we have such an apathetic fanbase that they can't even work up the energy to boo

UIC knocks off the Rams of Colorado State 64-55 at the Pavillon. UIC is 8-1. Colorado State was 6-1 going into the game. The Rams had beaten the Pac-12 Washington Huskies, who beat Saint Louis.

Nice to play at home, of course.  But, this should move them up the Midmajor Top 25, for sure.  A great win.

I think Georgia Southern's win was the bigger surprise than the Loyola win over Mississippi St. The Bulldogs have a new coach this year, so that played well in Loyola's case tonight.

That was a big win for Ga Southern. Va Tech had beaten Okla. State, Iowa, Rhode Island and VMI. They had lost to West Virginia by 1 the Saturday before and that was the Hokies only loss until Ga Southern.

The other thing about Mississippi State...they have three scholarship athletes out with injuries, two with ACL tears, one with a wrist injury who is a leading scorer. Only having 8 players available hurts the Bulldogs in the long run of the season, and Loyola was able to take advantage of the short bench last night.

Valpo isn't the only HL team getting bumped off by a Summit League team. Tuesday night UIC got walloped by the Leathernecks of Western Illinois in Macomb, 70-54. That is only the 2nd loss of the season for the Flames.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/college/chi-western-illinois-ends-uics-win-streak-20121218,0,1643988.story (http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/college/chi-western-illinois-ends-uics-win-streak-20121218,0,1643988.story)

UIC led 10-1 as Crittle scored six early points, and the Flames maintained a lead through the balance of the half even as Western Illinois slowly chipped away.

The Leathernecks trailed 27-25 at halftime but blitzed the Flames 23-7 in the opening 10:11 of the second half. That stretch, which included 12 unanswered points, gave Western Illinois a 48-34 lead.

The Flames got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

Tuesday's game featured two of the nation's top defensive teams. Western Illinois entered the game fourth in scoring defense (51.1 points per game), while UIC was fifth (51.6 points).

tx, I'm not sure that a UIC loss to WIU is "inconsistency". It's definitely an identity win for the Leathernecks and the Summit League now that the team most fans know about in that league having left it for a worse conference (ORU/Southland). Heck, I'll enjoy a 7-2 UIC Flames team at this time. When was the last time UIC was really worthy of talk, outside of conference play?

Nice win for Green Bay tonight. They knock off the Golden Eagles of Marquette by 2 at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon (you probably thought it was in Green Bay but it's actually in the suburb of Ashwaubenon near Lambeau Field-Lambeau sits just inside the city limit of Green Bay with many of it's parking lots are in Ashwaubenon).

UWGB wins thriller over Marquette

http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/article/20121219/GPG020101/121219075/Men-s-basketball-UWGB-wins-thriller-over-Marquette?nclick_check=1 (http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/article/20121219/GPG020101/121219075/Men-s-basketball-UWGB-wins-thriller-over-Marquette?nclick_check=1)

That shot that had been rolling off the rim for Alec Brown most of the season finally rolled in.

And those rebounds that had eluded him, this time he went after them hard.

it was the big shot and important rebounds by Brown that made the difference in the end.

The Phoenix's struggling 7-foot-1 junior got a jumper in the lane to bounce a couple of times on the rim and fall in with 2½ minutes left for what were essentially the game-winning points. What's more, he fought off Marquette's Davante Gardner and grabbed the game-clinching rebound with 1.5 seconds left after a missed 3-pointer by Marquette's Jake Thomas.

The sophomore guard (Keifer Sykes) scored a game-high 20 points, and sophomore forward Greg Mays added a season-high 11 points.

"It had to be the slowest game played in Division 1 this season," MU coach Buzz Williams said, "and that's probably the right approach to what coach Wardle is facing from a health standpoint." (only 8 healthy players)

"I kept telling them it was our tempo, keep it at that pace and I thought maybe we could pull it out in the end." Wardle said.

Here's what HC said about the 12/16/12 HL poll:

Quote from: HC on December 16, 2012, 11:01:09 PMHere is what I sent in to PantherU tonight.
UIC, Valpo, Detroit, YSU, Loyola, WSU, Green Bay, CSU, Milwaukee

I dropped CSU below GB mainly because of their injuries to key players.

Gary Waters Postgame at Akron (Dec. 23) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjPGDXSfPuA#)

By the time Valpo plays Cleve State Junior Lomomba's foot should be healed & Devon Long should be back too. Anton Grady is pretty much done for the season with a torn meniscus.

http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/index.ssf/2012/12/cleveland_state_cant_hold_up_a.html (http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/index.ssf/2012/12/cleveland_state_cant_hold_up_a.html)

even as CSU freshman Junior Lomomba, who is recovering from a broken foot, delivered a career-high 16 points.

With 6-9 Anton Grady (knee) sidelined along with 6-8, 260-pound junior Devon Long (suspension), CSU was left with 6-7 Marlin Mason as the starting post, with 6-9 Luda Ndaye, who is recovering from hip surgery and 6-8 freshman Aaron Scales, off the bench. That trio combined for six points, all by Ndaye.

But a difficult stretch is over, as alternating six-game suspensions for Ndaye and Long ended with Long missing the Akron game. When the Vikings take on Rio Grande on Friday and Kent State on Jan. 2, they will be as close to full strength as they will be all season.

"There were some secondary [NCAA] violations in the athletic department, which we uncovered and self-reported, an extra-benefits issue," said CSU Athletic Director John Parry. "No other basketball players were involved."

BIG win for UNM tonight, giving Cincy their first loss.  That'll help a little :)

I would say.  Beating the #8 team on the road no less.  Given everything, even miracle should say that a 13 point loss on the road to New Mexico isn't looking all that bad.

According to Twitter, Cincy ran Pacer but the shot rimmed out.

Same New Mexico team lost to South Dakota State in Albq.   Go figure.
If So. Dak State played Cinci in Cinci are they big favorites?     ;)

STLVUFAN--if you are referring to what Cincy ran at the end of the game, it was not anything close to Pacer. They ran an in bounds play from under their own basket, and it was designed to get the ball back to the inbounder, I think Kirkpatrick, he had his shot blocked and then a Cincy forward caught it and threw it to the basket where it went in, but time had already expired. New Mexico (and UCLA last night) both did a nice job in using their extra fouls before the bonus to slow down Cincy (and Missouri) when the game was tied or only a 1 point lead. By fouling in the backcourt, both defending teams were able to take time off the clock. UCLA almost screwed up when with the score tied, their defender roughly fouled Pressey and it should have been called an intentional (Pressey did sell it well and some might argue his flying mid-air nearly 180 was a flop).

I have no idea whether it was at the end of the game or not, as I didn't see the game.  Andy Glockner tweeted that Cincy ran the Valpo play, only this time the shot didn't go in.  I assumed he knew what he was talking about, especially since I replied to him with the correct name of the play and he immediately retweeted it to his followers.

I guess if Valpo can win on the road against a name opponent and Chicago State can beat Toledo then IUPUI can beat Maryland. The Jags are up 19-9 on the Terps with about 12 minutes to go in 1st half.

What the heck is up with Missouri State?  They go 0-10 in their non-conference schedule, but have 3 decent wins in conference already to be 3-0?  I don't mind the recent wins, but where was this effort in the games outside of against us?

Since Missouri State was the only one of our opponents playing I listened to the end of the game on a Springfield,MO radio station. The game was very close and Illinois State got it down to 3 twice.

The guy who made the difference was Anthony Downing at the end. He made free throws and hit jumpers that he wasn't making earlier in the season. Downing had 24 points. According to the Bears colorman on radio this was the first big win for MSU since their other 2 wins in conference came against Drake and Southern Illinois who look to be the bottom dwellers in the MVC. Illinois State had played a very close game against Louisville and had beaten Dayton. But the radio guy also pointed out that the Redbirds have been streaky this year losing to Northwestern, Louisville and Wyoming in three consecutive games and then immediately after beating Western Michigan, Morgan State, Dayton and Austin Peay in consecutive games. Also it didn't hurt MSU to be playing at home.

I wouldn't be surprised to see both Illinois State and Missouri State in the upper half of the MVC by tournament time.

By the way, the same Loyola team that beat Valpo at the ARC, only scored 10 points in the first half against Green Bay Wednesday night.

The Ramblers finished with 45 total points but that sure does make it look like Valpo caught Loyola at the wrong time. After the Crusaders beat Milwaukee on Saturday they will have to take care of business against Detroit next Thursday.

Although, tomorow/Thursday Detroit will face a tough YSU team in Youngstown. That will be a very exciting HL battle between the Penguins and the Titans.

For whom should we root in a game pitting two opponents?

As the conference season advances, this becomes inevitable on an almost-daily basis, but it still happens in teams from our OOC schedule meeting, e.g. UNM (RPI 10) @ St. Louis (RPI 47), or perhaps our MAC opponents.  I suppose the first question should be "does it even matter?"

One might think it doesn't make a difference, but would the gut reaction "the higher rated team should be rooted for so they continue to improve so that win looks better" hold true?  Or conversely, if there's a team with a chance to get out of the Milwaukee Zone, perhaps we should root for the upset?

The closest thing I have found to an answer to this question is on our team page in RPIForecast.
http://www.rpiforecast.com/teams/Valparaiso.html (http://www.rpiforecast.com/teams/Valparaiso.html)

If you scroll to the last entry, below the histogram of 10000 simulated seasons in red, you'll see a HUGE table of teams and their impact on our RPI.

You will see teams on there you don't even know on that list affecting VU, because even though they are not our opponents, they are our opponents' opponents.  Let's call this the Six Degrees of Steve Alford Effect.  And by clicking on the columns you can reorder the teams.  Obviously we have the greatest current positive impact on our own RPI, as well as expected impact, but you'd be surprised to know that New Mexico is 2nd and St. Louis 3rd currently (or 1st and 2nd after the DUH, US entry), and it's expected that they will still end up 6th and 7th, respectively--losing to them having a greater positive effect on us than even teams we will beat twice such as YSU (which unlike CSU, GB and MILW, at least is a positive effect at this point)!!!

So in this case, we should have rooted for UNM (for all the good it did us): regardless of whether we won or lost, the computer will tell us who has a higher positive effect, and so for that team we should cheer.  For the record, Murray State, unsurprisingly, will end up being the top OOC positive factor.

Perhaps in future editions of this feature we might embolden the name of the team we should prefer, in cases where it is not obvious?
("root for" seems far too strong in any game involving, say, Detroit.)
((And yet, due to electron-shell-type distance I cannot comprehend, we need to root for Butler in any conference game against VCU or Charlotte, for example! Check it if you don't believe me!!!))

Title: Re: Opponents' scoreboard
Post by: LaPorteAveApostle on January 10, 2013, 10:16:26 PM
Too bad, dude.  The rhetorical questions don't require the answers, as they say.

I've tweaked the criterion--instead of just expected impact, I'm looking at WEIGHT, and instead of expected, I'm looking solely at the CURRENT, because that's what we're looking at, games in the here and now.

Bolded team is the team that has (or would have had) the more positive impact now on VU by winning.
Italicized team is the team that is expected to benefit us more if the season plays out as expected (and we win the games we are expected to, etc.

1/10/13 Thursday

Detroit             101
Youngstown St  60
Since we have played neither, it comes down to opponents' opponents, and Detroit currently is (tied for) last at ZERO effect on our RPI.  Yet Detroit is the better team, and so if we beat them, we should better off in the long run...just not now.

IUPUI                         79
Nebraska-Omaha  90

Fort Wayne                55
North Dakota St  67
NB NDSU is predicted to have more positive impact on us than any other opponent's opponent (current: 0; expected: +.21!).  GO GET 'EM, THUNDAR!!!

Oakland                   74     expected impact, 1/9:  -.25; current weight, 1/9: 3.22
South Dakota State   81  expected impact, 1/9: +.04; current weight, 1/9: .10
NB In this instance as well as the first we see that the choice is not always clear.  It of course could be argued that teams we lost to need to win to redeem those losses, but the RPI formula seems to indicate that in leagues such as the Summit where we have multiple opponents, the multiplied effect of multiple-opponents'-opponents might actually outweigh it IF the latter teams are really good teams.  I'll monitor this after this loss to see whether the gain from SDSU's win (for VU) outweighs the loss from OU's loss (for VU).

The UIC-Green Bay game time was moved up to 3PM CT/4PM ET because of the 49ers-Packers. They didn't want anyone in GB to miss the Packer game because of a Phoenix they could have ignored anyway.

So Geo So. beats Davidson, a Sagarin 300 beats a Sagarin 100.  Does this hurt or help Valpo ranking wise?
Title: Re: Opponents' scoreboard
Post by: LaPorteAveApostle on January 14, 2013, 09:34:46 PM
Gee!  I'm glad you asked!

BEFORE this game, GA-SO was 2.94 of our RPI current weight and were expected to be a -0.47 impact.
Davidson was 0.18 of current weight and expected to be a +0.06 impact.

I'll recheck tomorrow, but I'm guessing that even though Davidson has multiple shared opponents with us (Milwaukee, New Mexico, and Ga-So--a second time later, though at home), the more Davidson wins it's good for us, but Ga-So is such a drag on us that we need them to win games like this.
Title: Re: Opponents' scoreboard
Post by: LaPorteAveApostle on January 15, 2013, 09:37:10 AM
So now:

Davidson is 0.28 of our weight, greater because of the game, but only +.04 impact, because they lost.
Ga-SO is still 2.94 weight, because we didn't play, but now only -0.26 impact.

Before this game, Davidson was +0.0108 (weight times impact) and Ga-So was -1.3818, for a net of -1.371.

After it, Davidson was +0.0112--greater positive even though they lost because the game being played itself more than balanced out!  Ga-So shot up to -0.7644, for a net of -.7532.

So this game looks to help our RPI out by over 6-tenths of a point.

So it seems that we should almost always favor our opponents over our opponents' opponents.  The only time this is in doubt is when our opponents are the same as our opponents' opponents, esp. conf. matchups.

Yes, it is always best to root for your direct schedule.  If we win the conference regular season and tourney, I imagine that we would be a 13/14 seed

I got my answer.  Before the Ga. Southern win Valpo was ranked 93 and Detroit 94. The next day (today) Valpo is ranked 81st and Detroit stayed at 94.  Horizon firmed ranked 11th.

Was that Sagarin, because WN still has us at 104 and reatime at 105? If so it is of interest on methodology because in recent years our Sagarin number always seems to be 20 to 25 below the other two.

How many of you would argue with the statement that if we could match this years team against our 2010-11 team (with Homer as coach) that the 12-13 team would win 6 or 7 out of ten? I only bring this up because according to a recent Rpi Forecast if we were to win out then our ending RPI would only be 49. The 10-11 team had a rpi high of about 37(?) and even after the late season tailspin they finished in the 80's(?). So our 10-11 ending rpi is still much higher than todays Warren Nolan and RealTime numbers, and if the BB committee goes by their numbers we will not be given as good an opponent as we probably deserve. Thoughts?

Yes, I was referring to Sagarin.  The Committee faithfully says that rpi isn't the sole deciding factor, and in that regard, I have found Sagarin to be a pretty good source for deciding seedings.  We'll see...

They also go by name recognition. I think we will get a great opponent. Considering we don't lose again. Which after the way we have been turning it up lately, I don't see happening. Kenney just needs to hit some 3s

Interesting that the teams that played tonight constitute 4 of the 5 biggest (current) weights on our RPI:
TEAM               Conf  Wt.   FutWt  W/L%  Exp%   Imp   FutImp
2) Kent St.        MAC   3.31   1.98   64.29   61.38   0.95   0.45
3) UIC              Horz   3.24   4.39   60.00   58.80   0.65   0.77
4) Northern Ill   MAC   3.23   1.94   16.67   25.44   -2.15   -0.95
5) Cleveland St Horz   3.13   4.35   50.00   44.85   0.00   -0.45
6) New Mexico   MWC   3.12   1.81   87.50   73.09   2.34   0.84

Kent, UIC, and UNM all won, so that should more than balance out UNI losing...but look at them...they're already such a drag (3rd only to Milwaukee and Chicago St)  yowza.

I'd have thought so too, and maybe it does.  But, all the other smaller factors must add up.  Overall, it looks like we're down a couple of ticks.  Comparing realtimerpi (yesterday, more or less) to warrennolan (current, more or less) it's RPI 0.5314 #104 to 0.5305 #109 to #109.

It will depend on what other teams do, of course.  But everything else being equal, making some quick estimates.  Yes, I think we'll most likely go to double digits if we win.  And most likely won't fall as far as 120 if we lose.  (From 107, currently.)

Well, I wasn't talking about the tourney; only the regular season.

But let's look at their tourney run:  game one, YSU, 8-man rotation; game two, CSU, 7-man rotation (but effectively 6 because Doug A only managed 4 min); and game three, us, 7-man rotation.

That's all they ever seem to have; McCallum played 111 of 120 min; Calliste 103; Simon 99.

Missing Chase Simon, Eli Holman, LaMarcus Lowe, Donavan (sic) Foster from that rotation; in their places, the return of Minnerath, and Juwan Howard, Jr.

Thin team is thinner, but it doesn't always bother them.  Not nearly as much as their lack of discipline...

I thought McCallum look tired down the stretch, and I thought that in Valpo game as well. Hard to imagine why on Saturday he didn't come out until there were 4 minutes left in the game, even though they were up close to 50 the entire second half. Then he plays all 40 minutes tonight. On the most important possession of the night, Arceneaux blew right by him for a layup with the shot clock winding down. They basically played 6 guys tonight in the third game in less than a week. Their starters could have used more rest on Saturday.

His dad wanted him to pass Jordan Aaron so he could at least be #1 in the HL in something (% of team's minutes played, 87.9%).

Preseason Awards!  Catch the Relevance!

All 5 UDM starters are in the conf. top 26 in min. played.  Only Rowdy (#13, 76.3%) and Buggs (#23, 67.3%) are for us, and that's just 'cause Buggs spiked last game (37 min, or 92.5%).

One of the hardest things about announcing tonights game was NOT announcing the Explorer win over the Dawgs... But I can laugh inside all I want...

Harder still to fathom... the 35-8 drubbing UIC put on UWM in the second half... and the 'thers had a 42-25 lead at the break!  That's gotta hurt.

It is what it is. The scores of Valpo's opponents during the 2012-13 season. These are the games that directly effect our RPI.

Interestingly, you might think (I did) a game like this, it doesn't matter who wins, because we beat the bad team and lost to the betterish one.

HOWEVA it is differently weighted simply because we share a different number of common opponents.  IUPUI is a bigger weight on our schedule currently, so it would have been nicer if they won.  But, they're IUPUI.

{reinsert rant about playing IUPUI when beating them is more than twice the negative factor of losing to Oakland}

OF the Saturday games... taking a look at the BBuster home-team Rippies, the way it looks to me, Murray State and Northern Iowa can pass us with wins on Saturday.  There are 7 teams within 15 ranking-positions in the mid-80s/low 90s.  The others around us are all playing lower rated teams...  We are #7 right now, and Loyola MD is #7 road team...  Go Greyhound, and leave the Driving to US!

I'm watching Loyola MD play Manhattan right now.  They are not very good and lead Manhattan 37-30 with 4:26 to go. Granted, they are on the road, but we need a better opponent. Let's hope for ND State or Ohio.  As stated earlier, I doubt ESPN would give a tv game (meaning ESPN2 or ESPNU) to three teams in the same conference, so I doubt Northern Iowa would pass us.  Plus, if they lose they are 10-10, not a great tv game.

Our schedule is really killing us this year.  It seems everytime I look at the posted scores our opponents lose more games than they win.  At this rate, we could win out the rest of the season, which we wont, and still end up a 13 seed.

Today/Saturday:

Winners-Georgia Southern, Nebraska-2nd B1G win (many on this board predicted zero or 1), Saint Louis, Oakland and Chicago St. (5 total)

I had a feeling that Tim Miles would get the most of this Cornhuskers team before the season was over. He has the knowledge and coaching ability to win close games. The biggest problem is that his talent doesn't match the conference he is in. The Huskers just can't keep it close with the top level & middle levels of the Big Ten.

I would like to see it happen, but it could be a pretty tall task for WSU - even at home.  Right now we have 3 teams chasing us - WSU, Detroit and GB.  IF we beat YSU, whoever loses the WSU/Det game will be 3 games behind and pretty much eliminated from conf. championship competition.  That's good for us, regardless of who it is.

Nope, Milwaukee has another bad 2nd half. Panthers were up by 1 at half and score 32 (after scoring 33 in the 1st half) in the 2nd half but allow the Ramblers to score 44. A better game by Milwaukee so Valpo will need to improve over their performance against YSU or we lose again.

OK, I went 3-3 the other night with predictions... NIU beat Kent??? Really????  so... tonights are too easy, moving to Saturday:

Murray races past "pea
Dayton takes SLU down a peg... (hope not)
GB of 0fer in Chicago
Oakland in a cake walk
Western wins at the Jungle
E'Ville aces da'Bears
Beth Cooks up a win
Toledo proves the NIU win was a fluke
Ohio State is a battle with oakland to see which Nebraska team is worse!
Eastern M can't win south of the state line
GaSouthern holds home court advantage over the snakes
Nevada will not come out of the locker room for the second half due to embarrassment
I'm guessing UIC will win in the pavilion
and since nobody will be at the CSU-UTPA game, I won't bother with a guess... we'll never see who won!

It will be interesting to see if the Billikens come out flat after the big win over Butler. Dayton, I believe, can play just as well as Butler on any given day.

You ever notice that there is no major team nicknamed the Groundhogs?

The biggest influence on Valpo's RPI most likely would have been if Nebraska would have pulled out the win over Ohio State. The Huskers got it down to 5 at the end of the game on some very courageous play by Almeida and Gallegos but lost by 7 in Lincoln.

Disappointing loss for Loyola tonight...   They were leading on Wright State and had a few opportunities to tie it up butcouldn't put the ball in the basket.   That would have been good for us.

All i know is that i will be cheering for some Detroit losses (sorry Detroit fans)...   I really want this senior group to get am opportunity to play in the big tourney...

The scoreboard postings called my attention to the fact that Detroit and Wright State get both Wisconsin schools on one trip -- two games in three days similar to the HL format last year when everyone had a travel partner.  I don't recall other teams having this arrangement.  Is it an advantage for Detroit and Wright State?

It seemed next to impossible to sweep that trip, so I really don't think it's an advantage.

GB 41 WSU 39 10:19 to go
UDM 57 UWM 54 8:49 to go
LUC 50 YST 48 5:23 to go

3 games 5 points.

Funny thing. ESPN has the Wright St/Green Bay game as a Final in OT with GB winning 62-59 but they are still playing the game in the 2nd OT with the score 70-68 WSU.

And the Raiders of Wright State defy ESPN and win 70-68 in 2 overtimes. It is possible to beat Green Bay in Green Bay no matter what Chris Berman and the Minnesota Vikings think.

and UWM missed a couple of key FTs and gave up a turnover fast-break layup with about 45 seconds to go... UDM holds on by 8...and YST holds court, 60-59 over LUC...    but I do like the GB loss... they'll be mad when Jr. and minny rath come to town, 1pm central on E3... I have just become a 48 hour GB fan....

Wright State's schedule is very favorable. Their three remaining road games are all winnable (Milwaukee, CSU, and UIC). They have a legitimate shot at a top 2 seed. Detroit's three remaining road games are much tougher (Valpo, UWGB, and UIC).

Oakland has really turned up the heat in the Summit League.  They have won their last 5 games and 6 of their last 7, including wins over the top 3 teams in the league.  They are now sitting in 4th, only 2 games back of league-leading W. IL.  They have pulled up their record to 13-13 and their RPI to 115.

Our 2-pt. loss way back when (as inexcusable as it was given the way we gave it away), is not the "terrible" loss it seemed to be at the time.

Plus, they gave NDSU and SDSU each a loss this weekend.  No matter who wins the Horizon (us or Detroit), we need teams like this to start losing a few games so they fall in the RPI.  That way a Horizon league team gets a 12th or 13th seed instead of being pushed back to a 14th or 15th.

Other good news.  Nebraska is still hanging on in the top 100 RPI, Oakland can get into the top 100 RPI if they keep playing well, and Murray St. is back in the mid-80's.  We need to start cheering for teams like Stephen F. Austin, Lehigh, Bucknell, etc. to either drop a couple regular season game, or lose in their conference tourney.  Meanwhile, one of the Horizon league teams (hopefully us) need to go on a winning streak to end the season to get as low in the RPI as possible.

Being in the Miami Valley and being familiar with the local sports scene and obviously with Butler, highly doubt it. Butler has come in and shown it can instantly be a contender atop the A 10.  Butler has a much better leader and much more intelligent coach in Brad Stevens. Butler went to a hostile environment at UD this year, lost their then leading scorer to an injury in Clark and still won (I went to cheer on the Dawgs). Butler has shown time and time again it can play through adversity as well as anyone. UD melts down under pressure (1-7 in games decided by 5 points or less). Dayton has a LONG way to go until they can be remotely compared to Butler's level of play. I can contrast all day.

Anyway, any of you making the trip to Dayton Tuesday?

Another data point:  SLU-Butler was sold out on a Thursday night, and was a 17-point loss for the Dawgs that was a very interesting game throughout.  SLU-Dayton two days later was an empty house by comparison and the game was over midway through the 2nd half.  A yawner, relatively speaking.

Obviously we all have our rooting interests with the contenders, but what about the rest of the league?

Because of differing amounts of common opponents, not all HL teams are created equal.  Fractionally unequal (highest RPI weight on here is 4.24, and lowest is 4.15, so not a huge range...2+%), but unequal nonetheless.

Here's a list of who we should root for in the riveting (for example) CSU-Milwaukee matchup.

for valpo's rpi's sake, root for the team higher on the list in any HL matchup:
Loyola
UIC
Milwaukee
YSU
Green Bay
CSU
WSU
Detroit

(i swear, it just came out that way.  although if it didn't I still might have put detroit on the bottom anyhow.)

Could have a major upset on our hands. SIUE is leading Murray State by 5 points with 7 minutes to go in suburban St. Louis.

And SIU-E does pull off the upset 65-60 over Murray State in Edwardsville, IL.

Kent at Ohio 11:00 a.m.                  Bobcats unstoppable at home (I'll take Kent, they played tough in last game)
*UI-Chicago at Loyola (IL) 2:00 p.m.      Loyola.... but I don't know why (UI-Chi! Loyola hasn't played well lately)
Georgia Southern at Charleston 4:00 p.m.     Ga Southern... they won by 22 last night, they're rested(agree-I'll go with Eagles)
*Detroit at Valpo 6:00 p.m.          er uh... OK Valpo by 10 (Valpo in a nail biter but who cares as long as we win)
Northern Illinois at Western Michigan 6:00 p.m.           Leathernecks in a blitzkreig maybe Broncos in a stampede? Remember our middle name.
Charlotte at Saint Louis 7:00 p.m.                        Billikens... Charlotte's had their win this week(SLU's D is overwhelming)
Jacksonville State at Eastern Kentucky 7:00 p.m.           Colonels... at home...(Jack State in last place, Colonels too good for them)
Murray State at Eastern Illinois 7:00 p.m.                 Murray State... because they are PO'd(agree-Racers bounce back)

sorry about the Bronks... I misread that as Western ILLINOIS... which would be really stupid this time of year... my humble apologizes to the Zoo'ers...as for the game... NiU would lose to most of the Western teams... Illinois, Michigan, Carolina, ... whatever...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Illinois (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Illinois)

Origin of "Little Egypt" name

Southern Illinois is also known as "Little Egypt."
The nickname "Egypt" may have arisen in the 1830s, when poor harvests in the north of the state drove people to Southern Illinois to buy grain. Others say it was because the land of the great Mississippi and Ohio River valleys were like that of Egypt's Nile delta. According to Hubbs, the nickname may date back to 1818, when a huge tract of land was purchased at the confluence of the rivers and its developers named it Cairo (/ˈkɛəroʊ/) Today, the town of Cairo still stands on the peninsula where the Ohio River joins the Mississippi. Other settlements in the area were also given names with Egyptian, Greek or Middle Eastern origins: The Southern Illinois University Salukis sports teams and towns such as Thebes, Dongola, Palestine, Lebanon, New Athens (/njuː ˈeɪθənz/), Sparta, and Karnak show the influence of classical culture. (Greek names were also related to the contemporary national pride in the new republic of the early 19th century, and were given to towns throughout the Midwest.) Egyptian names were concentrated in towns of Little Egypt but also appeared in towns further south. For instance, about 100 miles (200 km) south of Cairo, along the Mississippi, lies Memphis, Tennessee, named after the Egyptian city on the Nile.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saluki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saluki)

The Saluki, (Persian: تازی، ‎ Arabic: سلوقی‎) also known as the Persian Greyhound and Royal Dog of Egypt is one of the oldest known breeds of domesticated dog.

The pronunciation of names of cities is somewhat interesting in Southern Illinois. Vienna, IL is pronounced VI-anna. Exit 30 off I-57 is for Highway 146. Highway 146 runs between the twin cities of Anna-Jonesboro and Vienna. The exit is known as the Anna/VI-anna exit (and you must remember when they pronounce the name it sounds like a Kentucky drawl).

Murray State sure has fallen on tough times. Another big loss to a lower level OVC team in Eastern Illinois after the even bigger loss to SIU-E. You have to wonder how the Racers could fall so far and how these losses will effect Valpo's RPI/BPI.

Agreed ... that win that looked great in December has lost a little lustre.  This hurts Valpo's resume because they now have only one win over a top-100 RPI team (Detroit).  The good news is they get another shot against EKU and will likely see Detroit again in the HL tourney.

Unfortunately, things like this are out of Valpo's control ... they just need to keep winning games and let things sort themselves out.  I know this is being discussed in another thread, but I think the Detroit loss rules out a #12 seed, but a #13 is still likely with a strong finish.

UIC-Milwaukee has no impact, but who do we root for in the WSU-CSU matchup?  Presumably CSU, but if WSU wins do they tie GB and somehow give us an advantage?  This is way over my head!

Quote from: LaPorteAveApostle on February 14, 2013, 03:48:03 PMfor valpo's rpi's sake, root for the team higher on the list in any HL matchup:
Loyola
UIC
Milwaukee
YSU
Green Bay
CSU
WSU
Detroit

this helps a little.  (a very little...CSU impact on VU:  4.17; WSU: 4.15)

OR

consider who you want in our bracket:  we'll see 4 or 5 (because the only upset Milwaukee is pulling is Andy Geiger's stomach, and Loyola without Averkamp is not averGood) which, at this point:

4--WSU
5--YSU

If you don't want to see WSU in the semi, root for them to win and maybe they can get up to 3.
Or, hey, we beat 'em twice, root for them lose to ensure we don't have Green Bay fall down to the 4/5 zone.

I don't care about any other team but Detroit in regards to the conference tournament.  None of the other teams can do to us what they can, and I see us mowing over our semi-final opponent at home, regardless of who it is...a la Butler last year  ;)

and our opponents go 1-3.  We were watching the Nolan-RPI update immediately following the Owl Free Throw Contest over Ray(s) and our RPI did not budge... the only thing that changed was the UDM Streak went from one win to one loss.   We did drop about 5 since that game... because of the other losses, Murray State sure has fallen on hard times.  Nice win for EKyU... be nice if they could beat Belmont in the OVC tourney.

and our opponents go 1-3.

The RPI there does update fast, within minutes.  But I think he warns that the game results update faster.

But, anyway, that was my recollection also - Temple had an RPI in the right place for a road loss not to touch Detroit.

Sandwiched around their bracketbuster win over Morehead St the Golden Grizzlies (rumored to be joining the Horizon League in the fall of 2013) of Oakland lose twice to the Mastadons of Ft Wayne by a total of 8 points, 77-71 at the Coliseum in Ft Wayne and 74-72 at the O'Rena in Rochester.

Murray (20-9/10-6) took it on the chin again.  They've lost 5 of their last 10.  Last two were at home.  EKU a loser as well.

So this morning we have moved up to 66 in the Sagarins while the Horizon maintains a .12 lead over the WAC for 12th. This is good! We are now ranked higher than 15 conference leaders and very close to four others. We need some help in conference tourneys.  Cheer against Akron, Belmont Middle Tennessee and Denver!

Here's a question: with their crushing loss Butler has now dropped to 52.  If they lose is round one or two of the A-10, do they get an at-large bid?  I think they have to be on the bubble.

Just a reminder, Butler was not one of our opponents this year and this thread is about "Valpo opponents' scores, not Butler's chances of making the tourney. Please keep these comments to the Butler thread. When do we start the Indiana State or Ball State thread?

That's 5 B1G wins for Nebraska. That's pretty impressive since many on this board said they wouldn't get any B1G wins at all or maybe 1 or 2.

I actually think Husker Coach Tim Miles, who took a gamble taking a low end B1G job which could be a career dead end after his success at Colorado State and North Dakota State, has Nebraska headed in the right direction.

What do you think we would be ranked if we would have gone undefeated in the regular season. I know we lost 7 but going undefeated wouldn't have been impossible, unlikely yes but not impossible. I personally think we could be in the top 15 if not top 10 possibly top 5 unlikely number 1.

If we ever went undefeated, it would probably be similar to what Murray State was ranked last year.  I believe they got into the 12-15 range?

Huh - funny hypothetical.  Our SOS would still be really mediocre, 179th in the nation, but the polls do love an undefeated team.

Our overall RPI (I'm pretty sure I've got it correct) would be 22nd in the nation, ahead of Belmont.  That's ignoring the effect of those seven changes on the RPI of other teams.

Going completely undefeated is really hard, but I suppose there are examples of teams from weak conferences that have come close.

This season the closest comparisons (high RPI teams with bad SOS) might include Gonzaga (28-2, RPI 7, SOS 78), MTSU (27-4, RPI 24, SOS 127), LA Tech (25-3, RPI 45, SOS 210).

LA Tech was briefly ranked.  Gonzaga's done OK, of course.

We'd have two solid wins: at New Mexico and at St. Louis (ranked ~12th and ~16th in the polls).

Probably top 20?  Probably not top 10?  But it's pretty hard to say what the novelty of being undefeated would do for us.  We'd definitely be getting a lot of attention.

The last "novelty" undefeated team I notice in the polls this year was Wyoming, briefly in the top 25 at 13-0 in early January.  They're now 16-12 (ouch!) with an RPI ranking of 74.

Ah - nice.  That's probably about right.  Their SOS was a little better, at 146th, but that included the tourney run.  So, a pretty reasonable comparison.

They had one conference loss (at home!), a couple more top-50 wins, maybe only one ranked win.  D1 record 27-1 going into the NCAA tournament.

Kent St vs Akron... if Akron loses, Valpo's RPI goes up with Kent St, Detroit goes down because they beat Akron.

Kent St's RPI impact of Valpo's is quite high, actually at 1.05. Akron's is 0.40 to Detroit. Both teams are around .10 to the other. So I believe either way, both teams RPI increases?

But if Akron loses two straight, they could probably wave an at-large goodbye. If they win their conference tourney, they'll be seeded higher than Valpo

Not an opponent of ours (this season), but Loyola Marymount, who went 8-22, 1-15 in the WCC, and ended the season on a 14 game losing streak, just won their third straight in three days.

Meanwhile, on the crazy play at the end of Indiana State-Evansville, the guys on ESPNU (Gaudio, Lunardi, and I don't remember the other guy's name) commented: did Homer Drew draw up this play!?

Why??? They are the worst team left in the WCC and would probably absolutely slot in behind us on the S-Curve, moving us up a spot. Also in the WCC right now, San Diego is up on BYU. They are 13-17 with an RPI of 178 and would finish behind us.

We want one of these two teams to somehow win that tournament.

In fact, we just want carnage in every conference tournament. The more bad teams that secure auto-bids, the more teams would slot in below us and bump us up seed lines. (I think that might have been mentioned...not sure  ;)...and I'm too damn lazy to look :))

Because Santa Clara is absolutely behind us too, and they match up better with Gonzaga!

They're the best of the teams that would be behind us on the S-curve.  LMU is too, but how long can their luck & legs hold out?

LMU lost 88 to FORTY THREE to the 'Zags.  At HOME.

The OVC title game could very likely swing a seed for Valpo. If Murray State pulls off the upset, that adds an additional team into the field below them. Valpo also gets the slight RPI boost from the Murray St win. It might be all that's needed to put Valpo in as a 13. Oh, and two impressive Crusader victories are also a necessity.

Again, Why?

The more bad auto-bid teams there are, the more we move up. An "extra" team from the WCC would knock out a bubble team, and have ZERO effect on us.

Someone used an example earlier:

These five teams are ranked in this order:
1. Michigan
2. North Carolina
3. Colorado
4. Valpo
5. Manhattan
6. Loyola Marymount

There are four bids available.

In option 1, Valpo wins their conference tournament and the top three teams are at-larges. Hence, Valpo would be the #4

In option 2, Loyola Marymount ALSO wins their conference tournament. This means Colorado doesn't have a spot as an at large, AND Valpo would be #3.

We need as many BAD teams to occupy the #16/15/14 lines as possible. It doesn't matter how many teams from that league might end up getting in...a bad team getting in simply knocks out an at-large bid (if that league was a multi bid, at least)...knock out an at large with a 4-26 team and everyone else slides up a line.

Seriously, we should be rooting for the worst teams to win every league.

This is the easiest way to follow. Root against, Akron, Belmont, Bucknell, Davidson, La Tech, Middle Tennessee St, and SF Austin. Look for these teams each day in opponent's schedule (Apostle can you get these teams listed in there)? Thanks awesome. Remember root for the Crusaders and root against these other aforementioned squads.

Denver (64) and New Mexico State (59) winning the WAC over Louisiana Tech could also be problematic.

BYU in the WCC over Gonzaga would definitely push them above a potential Valpo tourney team. Better to have either Gonzaga or St Mary's winning that.

Root against teams you mentioned. Doubt Davidson is going to get a lower seed than 14.

Could cheer for Indiana St not to win MVC. That could result in a decent seed.

All this thinking and seed calculation might be a bit premature. Feels too much like counting outs in baseball or putting a magic number up.

Davidson and Valpo will have very simliar RPI's if both win their conference tournaments. Better safe than sorry, If I'm a Valpo fan, I'm rooting against Davidson. Trying to project the difference between a 13 seed and 14 seed is really a crapshoot. Davidson, Valpo, SF Austin and even Bucknell could go either way. Everybody's rooting for Murray St. tomorrow....unless you're a bubble team.

Yes, but a win for Kent and a loss for Akron are good things for Valpo as far as the selection committee is concerned. Of course, a MAC tourney loss for Akron would be even better.

At the half in Sioux Falls, SD:

UMKC (8-23, 5-11, RPI #283)     22
N. Dakota State (22-8, 12-4, RPI #77)     19

Would be another team "close" to us in RPI that we would "get rid of" having to worry about. SDSU is #76 and plays IPFW in the semis tomorrow.

Predetermined site. Albany plays at the Pepsi Center (I think that's what its called). A large arena...they've hosted NCAA first/second rounds in the past there. It's a home game, but a single site tournament.

But the final for that conference is hosted by the highest seed remaining. I don't know, I just don't like having all the pre-finals rounds at one site and then move to wherever. If you are going to pick a single site then stay there throughout the whole tournament.

Agree 1000%. They move in case someone other than the host is playing so they can get the best crowd possible. Think if WSU/UWGB would be playing on Tuesday at the ARC how bad the crowd might be...so they move on.

The seeding benefit would only happen if Louisiana Tech, Denver, AND New Mexico St all lost. Utah St., Texas Arlington, Texas San Antonio, or Texas St would have to win the WAC tournament. If Denver, NM St, or Utah State gets upset (but one of those wins) it may move us to a better lower RPI since they're all right under Valpo.

Like I said, it seems like a lot to ask.  But, hey, we're on track so far.  Four more games to get two pretty good teams to lose to two lesser teams.

Our RPI did jump ahead of Denver's, but since they're out of contention I doubt it really changes much.  Maybe we seem a little closer to e.g. Bucknell now?

But, hey, 58 - not bad.  And New Mexico State might drop below us even if they beat 265 Texas State.

Memphis and Southern Miss weren't as accommodating as Denver, unfortunately.

3auge, you are focused WAY to much on just the rpi.  The other WAC teams are not close to Valpo in other systems.  Denver was the dog in the fight and they when home very unexpectedly and in the quarter-finals.

3auge, you are focused WAY to much on just the rpi.  The other WAC teams are not close to Valpo in other systems.  Denver was the dog in the fight and they when home very unexpectedly and in the quarter-finals.

Which teams are not close to Valpo and in what systems? In the combined rankings, Denver is (was) 7 spots better than Valpo, Louisiana Tech was 1 worse, and New Mexico State 15 worse. They're close, but the winner will get better in the rankings with two more wins, one being a top 75 team. Each team has a top 50 win and a couple more top 100 wins. Valpo doesn't have any top 50 wins, and has one sub 200 loss (so does LT). I would at least say they're close, but I can't see Valpo getting a 13 while one of those 3 WAC teams I mentioned gets a 14 seed.

LA Tech down 8 with less than ten to play.  We've got a chance here!

LA Tech probably fouling?  Down 6 with less than a minute to play.  Hit your free throws, San Antonio!

San Antonio wins!

Now we just need New Mexico State to lose tomorrow or Saturday.  Others have shown it can be done, for sure.

Here's my thinking.  The rpi doesn't weight the location of the game.  Thus, a win at home means no more than a win on the road.  I might be wrong.  the bpi and Sagarin takes these things into account.  LaTech and NM St are ranked 83 and 84 in one and 74 and 79 in the other, while Valpo is ranked 66 and 63. At the same time the rpi has them ranked  at 48 and 58.  See the disparity?  Sure, they will move up with wins but so will we with teams like Nebraska winning.  It will be a very interesting and informative next few days!!

Home losses and road wins carry extra weight, while home wins and road losses carry less weight.

As for Nebraska and Kent State winning.  They definitely help... a little.  Unfortunately, most of our opponents are done playing.

At this, very late, point in the season if you're still playing your own wins and losses, and what new teams you're adding to your schedule, matters the most for your RPI.

We sure will find out more about the selection committee mode of operation on Sunday.  The whole SF Austin, New Mexico, Valpo thing is very interesting.  In Valpo's case the rankings between Sagarin, BPI and RPI are very similar coming in at 64, 63, and 59 respectively.  However in both SF Austin (ranked 86, 75, and 61) and New Mexico State (ranked 82,76 and 57), there is a fair amount of disparity.  Should be interesting...

The huge upset of Houston Baptist over NJIT is irrelevant because the Great West Conference doesn't get a bid to the Dance, so I'm hoping that's sarcasm I smell, and not a dog fart.

Also, in terms of the RPI weighing the location, do they weigh the location of a tournament game in the conference tournament? I think that's what the intent of the weighing of the location of tournament meant this time. Yes, they do weigh this during the regular season, but not sure that tournament locations make a difference to RPI during the conference tourneys, as so many conferences play in one location for the entire tourney, and in most cases, it is a very neutral site, whether city or arena.

This may vary by who's calculating the RPI.  Compare Warren Nolan.

http://warrennolan.com/basketball/2013/schedule/Wright-State (http://warrennolan.com/basketball/2013/schedule/Wright-State)

Wright State's tournament games against YSU and Detroit were marked neutral.  And their game against us was marked away.  Which, neutrality HL rules aside, all looks correct.

I assume the NCAA (whose calculation the committee uses, presumably) also handles tournament games in this way.

I don't know if it's _always_ this clear cut (what about a "neutral" court in the same city, like UIC hosting at the United Center or something?), but much of the time it probably is.

I have been watching games on ESPN 3 and it's interesting that ORU lost to Sam Houston St (are there any universities in that conference that aren't named after people that have large cities named after them?) in a quarterfinal Southland Conf game. Another interesting fact is that SFA coach, Danny Kaspar, has the best hair among men's basketball coaches next to Rick Pitino.

The best player name in Div.I is Onochie Ochie of Southeastern Louisiana.

What teams should we be following now? Following our opponents doesn't seem relevant because the RPI doesn't effect the tournament anymore. If you're set on following our opponents just because we have been following them all year I will do it. None of our regular season opponents are playing on Tuesday/tonight.

Quote from: bbtds on March 19, 2013, 04:03:01 PMWhat teams should we be following now? Following our opponents doesn't seem relevant because the RPI doesn't effect the tournament anymore. If you're set on following our opponents just because we have been following them all year I will do it.

I probably am still curious about our opponents, for old times' sake.  The Horizon League teams especially, of course.  With all of the seeding discussion, I'll certainly also follow the 12's, 13's, and 14's, and anyone they kicked into the NIT in their conference tournaments.

Not that you need to post all of that!  But, I probably have more of a rooting interest in the above than in the 1-4 NCAA seeds.

Wow.  YSU with a season high for scoring.

Going to break 100!  (Well, almost.)

I guess we can console ourselves with the notion that YSU's playing at home?

If anyone missed the Div. II men's basketball national championship game, also from Atlanta, Philips Arena, Drury University of Springfield, MO Panthers won an extremely entertaining game against Metro State University of Denver Roadrunners by a score of 74-73.

It was end to end action with Metro State trying to throw up shots till the very last moments of the game.

What a nail biter!

Drury's coach, Steve Hesser, was battling pneumonia and showed a calmness that didn't seem appropriate for this game. Although maybe it was extremely important and appropriate.

I did actually catch a glimpse of that game in a Valpo restaurant.

It seemed amazingly entertaining.

Another thing I noticed is that the new Ford Center in Evansville is hosting the Div. II National championship in 2014. After doing some research I noticed that Evansville has a total of 5 "college" division or Div. II national championships. The school with the most Div. II national championships is Kentucky Wesleyan in nearby Owensboro, KY with 8 NC's. In 1995, a Marty Simmons coached, University of Southern Indiana in Evansville won a Div. II National championship. That is really a fascinating record of 14 NC's in an approximately 50 mile area.
