Title: Game #1 - North Park University Vikings @ ARC Friday 11/10 7pm
Post by: talksalot on November 05, 2017, 10:48:46 AM
Here's the last line of the North Park Athletics last game summary from last year...

North Park (18-8, 11-5) will now await the possibility of an at-large bid to the NCAA National Tournament when the selections are released early next week.   (Led by three different players in double-figure scoring, Augustana shocked North Park 86-70 in the semifinals of the CCIW tournament Friday night at Tarble Arena on the campus of Carthage College.)

They have not played any games... in fact their schedule does not include the Valpo game, and opening night is 11/17 for the Vikings.

Junior Jordan Robinson (Not on Current Roster)  added 13 and both Colin Lake and Joe Biko (Not on Current roster) tallied 11 points each.

This is Mark LaBarbera's alma mater.

No complacency, let's run... the offense.   Every possession in the front court with more than 24 seconds left on the shot clock...

oh, and when Bakari has the ball... be ready for the pass!

So this North Park team is tiny.  Certainly a good time to begin Sorolla's 2-game suspension.

Even so, we will have Linssen, Hazen, Smits and McMillan towering.

Is there a reason we count this as regular season?

From my previous post... We've seen a superlative offensive show in exhibition #1 and an impressive defensive effort in exhibition #2. What will this game bring us?

I have no problem with these D2 or NAIA games this season. They may not be the most exciting but they make sense for teams like ours who just had massive roster turnover from last season to this season. These games are actually useful for experimenting and getting playing time for everyone before they start getting tested against better competition in SELA and Samford and even to a lesser extent SIUE on the road.

Hopefully there is no complacency with this team. I could see the complacency argument with last years team playing Trinity Christian because that 2016-17 team was a pretty veteran team but this 2017-18 team is really young and has transfers that sat out a whole year wanting to prove themselves to the coaches and want to just get out there & play.

It will be nice to see Smits, Linssen and Mileek getting some bigger minutes those 2 games. We'll get a larger sample size.

Agreed.  Great chance for the team to jell and prepare for bigger challeges like SELA and SIUE.  Also, as Coach Gore pointed out on Union Street Hoops, these games don't hurt the RPI.  I woould rather see these games then 300+ RPI DI teams.  Hopefully, vu continues to improve in these games, than is ready for greater challenges ahead.

We flirt with the century mark, but fall short.

Valpo  97
N Park  59

Valpo - 102
North Park - 63

I think we'll see the young guys get a lot of playing time all throughout the game.

We all knew Sorolla was caught underage drinking, but I was unaware Joe Burton was with him. Can anyone confirm that Joe Burton is sitting out the first 2 games also? This is the first I'm hearing about this.

I feel bad digging around re students' records. But, it is public record.

Joe's case does seem to be around the same time

He was apparently already 21 (possession of marijuana).

And here's Sorolla

so, from the dates, it looks like two separate incidents. And that Burton's case somehow escaped attention.

By my calculation, we've won 11 straight Home Openers... dating back to Charlotte on '04-'05.

The last time we started on the road, we lost @ Arizona. So that's 5 of those in a row.

It would be interesting to know what the Athletic Department's marketing focuses are relative to attracting more fans - strategies, tactics, goals, action plan, rewards for success, consequences for failure.

I know that was a student who tweeted that out. Hopefully the Athletics Department is in communication with Residential Life and asks the Res Life to instructs RAs to tell all the students on their dorm floor about the game. Communication is key.

As for general admission, I'm not sure how the attendance will be. Opening night but it's against a D3 nobody has heard of and the weather turned bitter cold for the first time all year (at least here in Chicago). Hopefully we get a solid crowd tonight.

A lot of new players. Excitement only just starting to build. New conference, but what does that have to do with North Park?

Not expecting a big crowd, but I'm excited for the game and would be delighted to be wrong about the crowd.

1/4-page ads in the Times several times this week...and last week...

agreed it would be nice if they could add the "VALLEY ON ESPN3" to their "daily sports television shows" lists...

no early upsets in NCAAB today... Webber was up 2 on Stetson at the half... but the Hatters won by 10.

Bradford and Smits showing some offense.

We are fairly lost in our half court offense, this early in the season.

Smits can't grip a basketball to save his life, Vashil offensive hands.

Tevonn cold and yet we are still finding ways to score.  (AGAINST A GLORIFIED REC LEAGUE TEAM)

Still think we have 2-3 losses in November because of "experience/cohesion" development or lack thereof.

Yeah the half court offense is just looks off tonight. There was no flow at times during the game. This team is definitely still trying find itself. Also the rebounding needs to get cleaned up.

Micah Bradfor will be hard to keep off the court.  Absolutely was electric out there tonight, albeit against the JV team.  HUGE improvement over last year.

I'm not sure I'd classify him as a selfish player but he definitely has a scorers mentality. Micah was instant offense at one point when he was out there. It looks like this year he might not be playing a traditional point guard role. Todd kept on hammering that he need to hit over 35% from 3 while he's out there. He's fighting for future minutes every time he's out there.

This team's FREE THROW shooting is going to drive me absolutely crazy if it doesn't get cleaned up by the end of the season. It is so out of character for Valpo teams. We were 5th in the nation last year. Today we were 29-46 from from charity strike  :-X

We definitely have things to clean up in the half court and rebound department.

Todd was on Paul's podcast and he said he thinks he could develop into a Dan Oppland type player which would be amazing. I will say Parker is the least of a freshman liability on the court while he's out there. He plays hard and is pretty good at grabbing boards for a freshman.

I have no idea what Lottich wants Micah to do when he puts him in, but I feel absolutely certain that there will be times when Valpo will need him to do what he did tonight. As VU72, pointed out, this was against a JV team, so it remains to be seen whether he can be effective against better opponents.  Hopefully, if he's not blowing by his opponent or making his shots he has the good sense to distribute more, but if it's working...well, it's working.

Similar sentiments to everyone else.  Pretty "meh" with maybe a couple of head shakes from time to time nevertheless the team got the job done in comfortable fashion as expected.  I'm sure not having two starters doesn't help the offense flow so I am not overly concerned with anything...except free throws.

I think everyone has rose colored glasses on with our team's FT history, or perhaps mine are sludge colored.  Alec Peters was really good at free throws and shot A LOT of them.  All the Valpo teams in my time (07-11) seemed to be mediocre at free throw shooting, and they have always made me anxious to watch ever since.  Nevertheless, please team...do better.

The depth of this team is fun to watch.  At any time in any game, any player on the court can surprise with a big play or a nice run.   Even when Lottich "empties the bench" one feels good about the group on the floor.  Pretty sweet.

Do work on Monday and let's get into the varsity games!

Bradford had three games in double figures last year and had a PER of 3.6. He goes 8-12 and has a career high and all of the sudden he's too selfish now.

According to Matt, Micah did exactly what he wants him to do:

"We recruited Micah for a lot of reasons; from the basketball side of it, he has a unique ability to score in bunches," Lottich said. "Our conversations with Micah have been to be a scorer. Be who you are. Time and score will dictate when you can be more aggressive. I was really pleased to see his offensive outburst today."

I was delighted that I struggled to identify "the end of the bench". And that the whole crew was doing some useful stuff.

Obviously the weak competition helped.

I don't know which was worse, the free throw shooting or the P.A. sound system: they both sucked!

Didn't they Athletics Department get a "sound specialist" recently to help fix the sound quality? I thought I remember someone mentioning that.

Question: Is the ARC still playing those deafening Family Express commercials during every timeout? I haven't been able to make it to a game at the ARC yet. I honestly hope they somehow tweaked those because it actually takes away from the game, imo. Instead of hearing the band you'd sometimes get blasted with those annoying ads. It partially takes away from the whole atmosphere of being at a college game, imo.

I didn't notice them. So, I suspect they were absent tonight. Hooray!

Good to hear! I can't wait to make it to a game.

Also props to the Athletics Department for investing in the new video equipment! The video and sound quality have been great! They did a really nice job!

I stand by my statement, in those possessions where he scored, majority were NO PASS SHOOT.  It's selfish, down to its core.  He is not a distributor, flat out will be lucky to get 2 assists a game in this mode.

You don't have to agree, but notice the sequences with him.  It's glaring once you take notice.

I'm still impressed with his nose for the rim.  It's his 3' behind the three point line shots that are most stomach clenching.  You can't tell us that those are high efficiency shots, he can score efficiently 1 game from that deep....but look for 29% avg by seasons end.  Only Stef Curry gets away with that today.

Micah is a nice pressure back up PG though.  Evelyn can distribute, according to Todd's color commentator partner, "7-9 apg" (Ha!).

I suppose Micah's selfish play became most noticeable in a game where our half court sets were missing entirely.  How do we develope players and half court Offense when he shoots before the shot clock strikes 20?

Matt has stated that he wants  this to be an up-tempo team. Micah is up-tempo. That's for sure. Shooting 4 for 12 and hogging the ball is selfish. Shooting 8 for 12 as Micah did was in the flow of the of game as it evolved.

Ok, I admit I seem to have swallowed a poison pill pertaining to Micah Bradford.  When he takes bad shot sequences, I take more notice than most.

Re-watched the game and mellowed out the tiniest bit.  Still took some bad shots, needs to learn that it's not high school anymore.  Lottich said this in post-game, in high school any shot Micah had was the best shot for his team.  THIS IS NOT HIGH SCHOOL MICAH.  Please take note of what coach tells you.

Still a fan of having "creators" like Micah on the team.  But this style of play is what keeps him as "first off the bench" mentality.

I'm excited to watch Golder for three more years.  I don't remember for certain, but I think it was after his dunk when he then came down on the defensive side and slapped the floor with both hands.  He brings a lot of intensity and I think teams in the past lacked that aspect.

I'm not ready to call Micah selfish.  I think there were a few three pointers he took that were too far out for my liking but thought he did a good job otherwise.

As the old saying goes "shooters shoot".  Micah also appears to have put on some muscle over the off season.  There's a noticeable difference and that's good to see.

Lincoln said about Grant: He fights.  This much can be said about Micah: He scores.  At the end of the game, it doesn't matter how many times you passed the ball, it only matters how many points you have.  We need points and Micah makes them.  I like this kid and hope he gets enough time  to develop.

Micah Bradford is not a team player.  Makes me sick watching him AT TIMES.

I don't agree with this. When you are making shots and passing your opponents on the floor with your bursts of speed you are helping the team and your teammates should be congratulating you on your superior play. When Alec Peters was scoring in the 30's every game and putting the team on his shoulders was it called "not being a team player?" These are Micah's strengths and he is using them to the best of his ability.

Quote from: VU2014 on November 10, 2017, 09:19:41 PMThis team's FREE THROW shooting is going to drive me absolutely crazy if it doesn't get cleaned up by the end of the season. It is so out of character for Valpo teams. We were 5th in the nation last year. Today we were 29-46 from from charity strike

Free throw shooting must improve! We probably won't get 46 FTs against MVC opponents but if we miss 10 to 15 FTs against Valley opponents it can cause us to lose in close Valley conference games.

We have a team with at least 5-scorers, in which several will be on the court at a time with Micah.  If Micah goes 4/12 (as pointed out earlier), his volume approach is a detriment.  If he takes volume shots at a clip similar to 8/12 (yes) he is playing in the flow of the offense.

The real concern would be if he takes some of last years approach, goes 4/12, and under utilizes his teammates.  These guys working hard in the defensive trenches, who are shooters, only to hustle back on offense and sit with their thumb up their ______, that's a problem.

Alec earned his volume, Micah has earned an ugly hair cut.  He is trending up, had a great % performance.

I'm glad to get others input here, helps to center my logic against the fan base.  Great to be in season all!!!  Baseball was dragging on too long...

Freshmen and Sophomores played 154 of 200 minutes (77%) and contributed 71 of 88 points (81%).

I don't know much about Marcus' background story, but apparently he greatly elevated his game last year because he's no more a 2-Star player than Joe Burton is. This kid is a star in the making, and I don't mean 2 years from now.
