SB just signed their incoming 2018 class of 5. This group is taylor made for the Valpo program.

The softball coaching staff sure has "taylored" this team to their liking.
Between the existing roster and the newcomers, the outfield completely is taylored to the coach's liking. I'd say Kate is Staking alot on a team taylored to go the distance including a taylored battery of talented freshmen.
The 2018 season preview video. I didn't realize that SB practices during the winter months in a bubble somewhere in town. And it is a pretty big bubble.

That would have been great! We had to live on the Hilltop gym floors, where you never get a true hop, so we always came out of the gate with loads of errors.
Starting off at the Troy Univ Tournament this weekend...
Friday: Lost 5-0 to SIUE
Friday: Beat Tennessee State 3-1
Saturday: Beat Tennessee State 9-0
Saturday: Lost to Troy 7-0
Sunday Morning... 10am... SIUE again...
Net Weekend... to The Charleston Southern Tournament with the likes of Eastern Kentucky, NC Central and the hosts...
The bubble is the dome in Crown Point. Several of our teams use it as it's big enough to practice punting, hitting or play mulitple soccer games. It's been a good resource for the teams in these winter conditions even if it's a bit of a drive

Weather'd out in Central Michigan today... try again tomorrow for a double-header, trying to get in 2 of the 3 games.
Valley home opener Noon Friday at the Softball Complex...
Nice bounce-back for the softball team after a rough first weekend of MVC play, taking 2 of 3 last weekend at Missouri State (which swept preseason favorite Illinois State the previous weekend) and then splitting a doubleheader yesterday against Southern Illinois (second in the preseason poll). Good to see them being competitive in a conference which is a couple steps stronger than the Horizon League (much like men's basketball).
Clearly some of our teams are facing the reality that the Valley is a big step up from the Horizon and softball appears to be one of those teams. Expectations were pretty high with an experienced team yet after losing again today they are now 4-10 in conference, our leading hitter is batting .271 and we have had 17 hits in the last 6 league games--including a 8 hit game. We have had 0,1,2 and 3 hits in the other games.
and we won the second game of the DH 6-2...so we're on that winning streak we need to keep going.
We're losing a lot of close games, it isn't like we are getting blown away. The quality is definitely higher in the MVC, however.
Four straight wins this week over Loyola and Bradley and softball is now tied for 6th in a tightly bunched 3-10 in the standings. Pitching has been strong - just 2 runs allowed over those 4 wins
Another win and now tied for third!
That's cool. 1-0. One HR backed by shutout pitching.

It should be noted that Brittany Anderson who is our two sport star from East Chicago (region athlete), volleyball & softball, is hitting 4th and had the solo home run in the 2nd inning. I believe she also plays a significant role on the volleyball team too.
She absolutely does. I have a feeling she'll be one of the true leaders on the team before too long.

I'll be watching. Way to represent!
Valpo wins 3-2 over Indiana State on a Trepanier solo homer and Stauffenberg two run single in the bottom of the 5th inning. Valpo was leading 3-1 going into the top of the 7th (last) inning and with 2 out, one run in, score 3-2 Valpo, Coach Stake pulled the starting pitcher Packard and brought in Grossmann who got the final out on a grounder to short and a force play at 2nd base. Valpo now advances to take on mighty #1 Drake later today (4:00 p.m.)

0-0 in the B2
Just outclassed by a Drake team that probably will do some damage in the tourney. Still, a wonderful first year in the Valley, probably the best of any Valpo team. Congrats on a great season!
We went from the 29th rated conference to 13th, so that was a great start to our MVC tenure.
Great job, Ladies!
I think it can safely be said that this team would have gone to the NCAA Tournament if they were still competing in the HL, but this move coupled with these fantastic first year results leaves me optimistic that the program will reach new heights in the near future. Great season! Go Valpo! You've made us proud this year, ladies!
It was Drake's pitcher Newman that really did in the Crusaders. She's a red-shirt junior so Newman will be back next year and probably pitching for some pro team soon after she finishes her eligibility.

And that is a big problem. she struck out 15 Crusaders and pitched a no hitter to boot! :(
and the Bulldogs advance with a 4-1 win over the Salukis... heckuva year for Drake Softball.

She's the setter. Significant role for sure. Played in every set for Valpo this season.
Great fun to see a two-sport athlete shining.

She isn't the only two sport athlete. Brandon Riley (football) and Steve Helm (basketball) were two of the four legs that set a new school record in the 4X400 relay at the MVC track meet last weekend. Congrats to them.
And, based on the T&F roster, Stacy Jones (football) also does two sports.
I am hearing that former VU women's softball star Angie Doerffler has been named Asst. Women's Softball Coach at Butler.
