The Dayton Flyers and Indiana State Sycamores men's basketball programs announced Wednesday they will play Dec. 2 at UD Arena.
It's the second straight season the teams have played. Dayton beat Indiana State 86-81 in the season opener last season at UD Arena. That was the first matchup between the programs. Indiana State finished 18-12 last season
Dayton is 50-40 against the Missouri Valley Conference. Prior to the game against Indiana State last season, it last played an MVC team in the regular season in 2013 when it lost 81-75 at Illinois State. Illinois State beat Dayton 74-73 a year earlier at UD Arena.
Of all Division 1 schools, Dayton may have suffered the greatest loss for its basketball program due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While they are usually one of the better mid-major teams, their 2019-2020 team was probably a 'once every 50 years' type of team.
That team might well have made a final 4 or won the national title. They may have been in pole position for the twelfth spot in the Big East should that conference ever decide to go that route. COVID 19 screwed them San Diego State and indeed all mid majors. This was the year of the mid major with the Flyers Aztecs BYU and Gonzaga all poised to make serious noise in the tournament.
