Sports Talk / Death Penalty
July 14, 2012, 11:15:25 AM
there's a lot of talk right now that penn state's football program should receive the death penalty for the sandusky scandal, especially in light of the report that just came out by louis freeh and his team of investigators. i didn't follow the 2003 baylor scandal as closely, but was there any sort of similar reaction or demand for the death penalty for baylor basketball after the scandal in waco?

Sports Talk / Does the NFL have...
May 02, 2012, 05:22:49 PM
a suicide epidemic?

Junior Seau was found unconscious by his girlfriend according to ESPN with a gunshot wound to the chest. Police are investigating as a suicide. I know some of the heightened media exposure is due to the publicity these men were exposed to during their college/pro days, but does the NFL have an epidemic on its hands?

this one's for all the marbles. and unfortunately, it's against a team that's given us fits in the conference tourney over our 4 years in the hl. luckily, we're going for the third win of the year against detroit, and in the last 20 years, valpo's 17-2 in these games.

just saw on twitter that there were over 50 students in line for the free tickets when they started handing them out at 11am. this is a good sign. hopefully, those tickets are gone by the end of the day, and tons of local students/recent alumni with their ids can get into the student section and raise some hell.

edit: the line went through the double doors by the elevators in the union. definitely a good start. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=313805975341793&set=a.167497749972617.58630.113914928664233&type=1&theater

Sports Talk / Rising Costs of Guaranteed Games
March 04, 2012, 07:08:50 PM
the costs of guaranteed games are rising for big schools. we get directly mentioned in the article as a benefactor this past season of higher buyouts.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/mensbasketball/story/2012-03-03/big-ten-big-12-guarantee-games-ohio-state-texas/53357826/1

but is the extra cash infusion into the program actually worth a 30 point embarrassing beatdown? and while we're at it, does anybody know if we got any sort of payment to play at arizona back in november to open the season? i know it was part of the coaches vs cancer showcase, but i'm curious.

i don't see us winning at csu either. yeah, we caused them matchup problems before. but pogue has improved his play of late, and playing at their place means they're gonna get away with far more than they would on the road.

csu wins thursday 72-67.
valpo trumps ysu saturday 77-65.

Sports Talk / Paterno dead at 85
January 22, 2012, 10:01:30 AM
http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7489238/joe-paterno-ex-penn-state-nittany-lions-coach-dies-85-2-month-cancer-fight

regardless of your personal opinions on what's come to light over the last few months, you can't argue that he was one of the greatest football coaches of all time, leaving the game as the all-time wins leader. rest in peace, joepa.

On The Horizon / 2011-2 McCafferty Standings

butler leads milwaukee by one, and valpo's tied for third, six points back after the fall season has concluded.

http://eye-on-college-basketball.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/26283066/32668054

did this perhaps contribute to his decision to step down? perhaps feeling something wasn't quite right. according to sources, both cases were caught early - good news.

General Off Topic / Steve Jobs Dead
October 05, 2011, 07:13:20 PM
http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/10/05/apple-says-founder-steve-jobs-is-dead/

http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/05/us/obit-steve-jobs/index.html?iref=BN1&hpt=hp_t1

arguably the most influential man in the world of technology in at least my lifetime, and quite possibly longer. he had some of everything: business savvy, charisma, public speaking talent, common sense, an ability to relate with consumers, and many more traits.

from the cnn article:
Quote"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do," he told the Stanford grads in 2005.

"If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on."

Sports Talk / Misc College Football 2011

created this thread for any random ncaa football discussion over the course of the year.

too early to declare this the longest game of the year? http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/recap?gameId=312460087
nd-usf - 5h59m, 2 storm delays, 1 evacuation...

...and one more embarassment for nd.

Sports Talk / New NCAA Rules for FB and BB
April 28, 2011, 08:38:47 PM
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=6444510

the football rule doesn't do as much in my mind, but the move-up in the draft date has me baffled. why wouldn't that be set by the nba? matt howard certainly makes a good point in the article.

Hopefully we can find somebody as committed to the continued development of the program as he was to creating it.
