Valpo Basketball / Re: Recruiting: 2024

Preferred Walk-ons are common.. Caleb Furst, Purdue big man has a younger brother who is a preferred walk-on at Purdue.  Why the younger brother accepted the offer of PWO I don't know.  He has good size and I would think he would have had ample opportunities for  scholarships, if not P-5 at least a mid-major ,NAIA, etc.

You're right, VULB...the lack of experience is glaring on our problems deep in the paint with weak side defense.  I am sure that will come and be corrected soon.

Who was the guy wearing DeAviero's jersey?   Is this the same guy we have been watching for the past 2+ years??

Isn't Justus a big point guard who can also score?

I would expect the Rev to get his team reved up and respond on a positive note like they did against G B after the bummer vs, IUPUI.

VU favored by 2.5

VULB#62 is right on track as far as I am concerned.  Fox should be our man with a renewed effort on the part of the University to step up our program to the extent it is possible to do.

Does anyone really think that DeVeiro has any offensive promise?  I don't think so.  Not only did he not score vs. Illinois he only had 1 assist.  My prediction is that Coach in using him for the majority of the minutes now until Jahari gets more experience.

We must all remember that we need to be patient with this "new" group as someone said.  However, Darius is not part of the "new" group. We know what he can do as he has shown us in the past seasons.  However, looking ahead   I believe Coach will develop a new, younger point guard who with experience will have the ability to score and run the team on offense.  Let's face it, last year the MVC teams completely neutralized our offense daring Darius to shoot, which in effect had us play our 4 vs. their 5 guys when we were on offense.

I wonder if these posters would be so aggressive as to put their product on our site if our teams were among those dominating the MVC.  There is nothing worse than beating a dead horse when he is down.... cheap shots from competitors who have problems of their own.

DaViero is no different this season than his past .  As was just mentioned, once he gets to half court he is done.  He can't shoot, create,  get to the bucket or play defense against anyone he guards, most of which are bigger and stronger than he.  We can't be playing 4 vs. 5 when we are on offense.  He will be MIA once the MVC season begins, if not before.

However, it is still early and things will develop as the season progresses, especially in the area of who gets playing time.

A number of years ago we played Northwestern a number of times.

Me too!    :)    Sorry.     All of these new and improved factors in our program get me excited for this season.

Is there a list of offers we have made for the 24-25 season along with the status of the offers?    (signed, verbally committed, chances of signing with us)

And her Team, the Women's Volleyball squad played a remarkable match last night, when after losing the first 2 sets against Bradley at Peoria, came back to win the final three sets, winning the match 3-2.  They played with alot of poise througdhout the entire match.

General VU Discussion / Re: Enrollment numbers
October 30, 2023, 08:02:03 AM
I totally agree that Valpo and the Concordias have vastly different programs and opportunities.  Education at the Concordias is not cheap by  a long shot.  I am more concerned that the Valpo name is not being brought to the forefront in the FW and surrounding regions.  For years on a regular basis we see end of the year pictures and articles on area wide students, listing valedictorians and salutatorians and the college they were planning on attending.  We annually saw a handful of students listing VU.  Thís past year I believe there was only one student listed and that one was not from Fort Wayne,

Just like Coach Powell emphasizes getting players from the "area", ihe University should place more emphasis on recruiting it's immediate surrounding market, at least getting our name out in the public domain as often as possible.

We have to start somewhere and it sounds like we have made a beginning effort to rectify the situation in the long run.  It is a shame we basically wasted a couple of decades is rebuilding the bridges to this segment of high school juniors and seniors.  The comments made about the difference in the Concordias education vs. Valpo is well taken, including both academics and athletics.  However the point is the Valpo name and all that goes with it needs to be put out there and ready to compete with the Concordias of the day.  It is very basic...WE NEED TO GET OUR SCHOOL'S NAME OUT THERE ON A REGUALR AND CONSISTENT BASIS.  It is a shame that the Fort Wayne and Northeastern IN markets, along with Michigan and  Ohio, afe not better represented in Valpo's student body demographics.  Let's hope that the University's rejuvenated recruitment  efforts will be successful.

On a personal note, I am disappointed that VU does not put more effort into recruiting the Fort Wayne and Northeast Indiana market for more students.  Concordia Lutheran High in FW gets bombarded by all the "mid-west" Concordias...AnnArbor, Chicago, Wisconsin(Milwaukee) and Seward , Nebraska.  Last year was really disappointing in that there were no Valpo selections but a good number of Concordia recruits for that senior class.

I really think Valpo is sometimes a hidden gem and the great facts and attributes of our School are not being conveyed to the junior and senior classes of high schools in this area.

very interesting article for sure!

I would like to think that President Padilla and Dr. Small would be taking notes on this situation also and then do something about it, one way or another.

I agree with VALPO LI in that every effort should be made to have the Band back for all home games.  It appears that we are trying to  create a new and exciting atmosphere for the games and if they are serious about it the Band should be a part of it.  If it means that some compensation should be in order to get the musicians there, so be it.  It is great to hear a student band to add to the excitment of the game.

Valpo Basketball / Re: A new event idea being tried

For what its worth, Valpo athletics was involved in many annual "Smokers" in the Fort Wayne area for many years.  I would think that other markets also held Smokers.

I agree with you VULB#62...I wonder if the  University has ever pursued the ideas of sponsorship with Thrivent, including that of  being  a major donor to a new Arena project.  I would think we have tried that route but who knows.  With the expanded role Thrivent has taken regarding those eligible to purchase products from Thrivent I would think their expanded market would lend itself well to sponsorship in a broad based "Lutheran" university like Valpo.
