Ah, yes.  The Honorable Judge David Lass, one of my favorite frat brothers.  Not only a great guy but a heck of a QB.

Are both Anthony and Caleb returning next year?  What about the rest of the team?

My source was a person involved in accessing the program last year.  Enough of that, it is in the past...let's move on.

And now the Beacon is shedding light on the dogs and any mess they may leave,   :)

I have been told that Jerome's problems included both attitude and work ethics.  Let's hope that situation will improve with "Rev" at the helm.

The only problem is what does the "Dog Pound" have to do do with or share in common with "Beacons"?  I do not want to bring up any conversation concerning the nickname/mascot disaster, but lets face it, the new thing was one of the most stupid marketing programs in college basketball history so it is going to be hard to find a good way to create a new, innovative approach to the student section thing.

For what it is worth, Valpo has been picked to finish last in the MVC for the coming year in some early polls.  I believe we will surprise alot of people.

You know we really do not know what type of team will be on the floor this coming season, or how the recruiting situation both in '23 and '24 will end up, roster makeup, or what kind of record the team will attain, but it sure is fun hearing all the hype, recruiting news, ARC renovation and in general ballooning enthusiasm for the MBB program, Coach Powell and Staff. In spite of all the uncertainties I am really looking forward to the coming season.

Kids talk among themselves, even at that early age.  The best players, and some with great potential, see each other on a regular basis and talk about schools, coaches, who they like and the first impressions the coaches and schools give.  In the larger scheme of things these factors can mean alot.  It can only be a win-win situation when players have already met a coach or coaches and have a good impression of a Staff and School.  Getting in there early and good follow-up can bring real successes in the long run.  It appears that Coach Powell and this Staff are doing just that.  GO VALPO!

Let's face it...Padilla walked into a situation where the deal was already stacked and great pressure was already being applied.  I can understand, although I don't agree, that he wouldn't want to fight a element of his new School.  That element was very vocal and appeared to be pushing foir a real confrontation. If the President could appease that radical element and with no apparent real pushback, he could begin his Presidency on a rather smooth ride.  To me it appeared that his most vocal segment was being led by the woman who was the Interim President and the person who could or should be most helpful for the new incoming President

In any event it is over now so let's move on with our 2 dogs and a beacon showing them the way around.  Isn't it great to be able to say with the folks at Butler that we too have a dog mascot...in fact we still are beating them because we have 2!  "Bow Wow...go Beacons!"

One important thing that I have not heard mentioned is that this is Roger Powell's first head coaching job.  Granted, he has had great experience in assisting some quality head coaches but nevertheless this his first rodeo. There will be a learning curve for the new players AND the new Coach.

I will be amazed if DeAvieiro gets much playing time.  He was not able to get to the basket under pressure, couldn't shoot the 3 and could not stay with bigger offensive guys when playing defense.  However I am always ready for surprises.  In any event this year should be fun and interesting.

As I have already stated awhile ago, Powell's approach in recruiting is similar to that of Bobby Knight.  Knight wanted guys who were basketball smart, liked  to and wanted to play defense, and the player was recruited to fit roles that Knight had in his system.  Some of Knight's recruits were not always the most highly recruited, the highest scorers, or well known.  I too am anxious to see the season start and watch Roger's team progress and blend together.

Does anyone have a list of our "committed" roster players for this coming season?  And also, do we still have offers out on which we have not received a final decision for this coming season?

Are Anthony and Caleb playing with the team in Arizona?  I haven't seen their names on the leaderboard but have seen other team members.

One might remember that Bob Knight was very meticulous in his recruiting.  He often took players that were not necessarily the highest rated coming out of high school along with some top rated guys who he felt had the qualities to work together to make a good team.  He recruited players who were hard workers, of good character, played good defense, fitted to a specific position or offense, and team oriented.  He was very loyal to his players and they felt the same way towards him.  Yes, there were some exceptions but in general that was the "setting".  It is the type of player being recruited that makes the difference and it looks like Coach Powell is heading in that same direction.  Quality kids who are committed.  So far...so good.
