OK,  how did you find out about the Helen Keller game? We all worked very hard to try to keep that one item under our hats to be released as a special Santa Secret Surprise. Expect to hear from campus security tomorrow concerning the source of the leak.

I heard it was the maintenance dept at Valpo. Yep, there was a plumbing problem in the basketball offices at the ARC. These plumbers, see, broke into the offices and were making sure the coaches were doing their job to get their team re-elected, er, I mean win enough to take first place in the conference. They are calling it "ARCgate." I heard the plumbers recorded an 18 1/2 minute conversation between Coach Drew and the Helen Keller School for the Deaf and Blind but somehow the whole conversation got erased. But the Valpo womens BB team did brag that their trip to China was the greatest achievement by the athletic dept.

I think it's time for Crusader nation to hit the road.

Neither Murray, KY or St Louis are that far from Valpo. I remember one poster saying that you just go south on I-57 and you end up in Murray.

If it happens Pittsburgh wouldn't be that far either.

General VU Discussion / Re: Enrollment Info.
July 25, 2012, 08:02:35 PM
Sounds like the three tennis recruits have some talent. One went to a tennis academy in Florida, the other won over 20 singles matches and a senior award. The third was a WI state runner up as a senior. I know nothing about this but it sounds like Valpo has made a concerted effort to get better or the dismissal of Freeman lit a fire under some "other" coaches.

Sorry for bleeding the enrollment thread into a tennis thread.

weathernerd, swiftmutiny & justducky, it seems you are in want of an avatar.

Let me give you some rather sage advice. Beware of wrascally avatar salesmen!

I hear they prey on unsuspecting posters on this board like medicare supplement insurance salesman in Florida who prey on senior citizens who have just won $1,000 in the lottery.

It was one heck of an exciting finish, and I'm sure it's the reason they show it so often, and well worth viewing at 4:00 p.m.

Although the Valpo recruit, Lexus Williams, does make some very recognizable errors, his enthusiasm and leadership are well exhibited in this sectional game against Bogan.

Reminder: An Illinois sectional is the equivalent of an Indiana regional.

Interesting that USD plays at Harvard the week before they play Valpo in San Diego. Now there is a team that bounces from coast to coast. Open in San Luis Obispo, CA then San Diego, then Cambridge, MA, then San Diego, then Des Moines, IA, then San Diego, then Jacksonville, FL, then San Diego, then Poughkeepsie, NY, then San Diego, then Davidson, NC.

bbtds, do you really believe that Valpo can beat both St. Joe and either Duquesne or San Diego?

I'm just not seeing it. My guess would be 0-4 but I could see 1-3 is possible. I pray for 2-2.

NuPudge, isn't it better to be getting on the bandwagon on the ground floor instead of hopping on after the winning has happened for a while. Bet you didn't know bandwagons went up and down between floors.   Metaphors were meant for mixing.

I for one will be at more volleyball matches this season. As soon as they get the schedule done I'll know when to come. I'm getting cranked up for the volleyball season as soon as the nets get cranked up.

Huegli Hall/Deaconess Hall is all gone but the rubble. And there certainly is a lot of rubble to be cleaned up before Marshall & Co. is done.

I must agree. Fine job by all involved (even that new guy with the jewish meal first part of his name  ;) ).

Maybe Mike Bradbury saw the calculated calmness of Keith Freeman as an ingredient in his coaching staff that was sorely needed and therefore the head coach is trying to save his own job.

When trying to add that quality to your coaching staff you trust your own experience with opposing coaches, "man, I wish I had his calculated calmness in this situation" then someone telling you, "yes, I'm the calming presence you need on your coaching staff."

On The Horizon / Re: The silence is deafening
July 15, 2012, 10:50:43 PM
This line in the story actually answers some of the questions that have been asked on this board about how the HL will do things since Butler has left the league for the coming season of 2012-13:

Meanwhile, LeCrone said the Horizon League will play 16 basketball games next season with nine teams instead of 18 with 10. LeCrone said the league will have a true-round robin schedule and be fine next season. He said the league will look at expansion but made not overtures as to what direction the Horizon League would move in the near future.

How is Upton at kicking some balls through the uprights?

Can she line it up right and place the balls through the middle?

Will she be able to place the balls on a tee and kick them for a long distance to just in front of the goal line?

So given that we are playing with 9 this year for sure.  I think the question to focus on is whether the league is going to simply delete Butler from the conference schedule and thus hammer Valpo with a rested opponent every road game.   OR will they rework the schedule in some way.

There never was a schedule publicly announced with Butler in the Horizon League for 2012-13. Maybe there was a schedule in someone's computer somewhere but never publicly announced. Therefore there was no need to scrap any schedule with Butler and Valpo as travel partners. The Horizon League simply started working on a schedule without Butler for 2012-13 as soon as it was announced that Butler was moving to the A-10 a year earlier than originally planned. Whether the Horizon League keeps the travel partners it had previously and allows Valpo or another school to go without a travel partner or scraps the travel partners all together is up to the people in power in the HL. We won't know until the HL schedule is publicly announced.

Most likely you are correct, Indy. That would be Bethel University in McKenzie, TN, 40 miles southwest of Murray, KY. They are in the NAIA's TranSouth Conference along with Blue Mountain College of Blue Mountain, MS, Freed-Hardeman University of Henderson, TN, Martin Methodist College of Pulaski, TN and Mid-Continent University of Mayfield, KY. It's currently only a five school conference. It's not Bethel College of Mishawaka, IN, who just happens to be an NAIA school also. I can see where it would be confusing though.

Just got the following email from Valpo.  Note the "beer tent" on Saturday of Homecoming.  President Heckler is true to his word concerning "easing those rules for special events"

Here's the message:

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend Valpo's Homecoming and Reunion Celebration 2012! This year's theme, "Ignite the Crusader Spirit", commemorates what it means to be a Valpo Crusader and the many facets of Valparaiso University life. From service trips, Chapel ministry, and student collaboration to athletics, campus organizations, and Greek life, our Valpo journeys lead to lasting memories and lifelong friendships. Being a Valpo Crusader is a personalized experience, made up of many paths. Come back to campus and join the Valpo community in celebrating with exciting new events, as well as traditional favorites. Some highlights of the weekend will include:
•A Friday learning series, offering a variety of campus tour options and educational sessions. Lunch will feature Homer Drew, former men's basketball coach and associate director of athletics, speaking on the theme "Ignite the Crusader Spirit."
•Friday night's Crusader Kick-off, including a cook-out with music, the annual coronation of our Homecoming King and Queen (this year with kings and queens from past generations participating), and a pep rally – all concluding with a spectacular firework show.
•Saturday's pre-game Crusader Street Fair, with food, a children's activity area, a series of live musical guests, a beer tent , and an assortment of departmental and organizational gathering spaces.
•Saturday's football game versus Butler University, featuring a new family entertainment area.
•Saturday night reunion celebration events, with special honor given to our 50th reunion class of 1962 and our 25th reunion class of 1987.
•Sunday's traditional worship service in the magnificent Chapel of the Resurrection

What do you think, blackpanther? Would you miss the Butler at Valpo football game now?

Valpo Basketball / Re: 7 a.m. Nov. 13 vs. NIU

It there ever was an idea that could be spiced up some to draw the fans it's this game.

Just like the way TV networks advertise their tennis coverage at Wimbledon the Athletics Dept could call it "Breakfast at the A.R.C." and spice up the event. They could have some give-aways and other contests that could draw people at that early hour.

Remember this is a televised game on ESPN. Isn't that one of the elements that really draws students to the game?

Quote from: blackpantheruwm on July 10, 2012, 04:09:29 PMWhich is why Valpo should be packing the ARC, right?

Your comparing a town of 30,000, 50 miles from Chicago, with cities the size of 115,000 and 830,000. Both of the cities are oriented to be the center of their regions without much outside draws. Valpo does not compare to that. Valpo people go to Lake County, Chicago and South Bend to attend sporting events because they are oriented that way. Also I don't consider Valpo a sports town. Actually it's not that big of a deal for Valpo people to go to Milwaukee for a sporting event.

Valpo Basketball / Re: Possible game against Pitt
July 06, 2012, 10:55:27 PM
It sounds like Pitt may go ahead and schedule the game because it will be the best RPI the Panthers can schedule at this point in the summer. Pitt's coaching staff and AD obviously want a higher RPI to replace the possible SEC opponent they would have faced if they had been chosen for the SEC/Big East Challenge. But they also acknowledge that Valpo is probably the best RPI opponent they can get now. Therefore the Panthers will probably "settle" for Valpo as an opponent unless a higher RPI opponent emerges that Pitt could fit into their schedule.

Got a chance to drive around campus yesterday.

The first three sets of windows starting from the back of the chapel going towards the chancel are completed except for two windows. The last few sets of windows are still covered by plywood as I'm sure they must still be worked on. This is on the side of the chapel facing the Harre Union. I didn't check out the windows on the side facing the outer drive, the Welcome Center construction site and US 30.

Huegli Hall is ready for demolition. There are three pieces of demolition equipment from G.E. Marshall Company that are inside the fence ready to start on the demolition as of Thursday evening. All the windows seem like they were bombed out by explosives. I assumed they removed most of the air conditioning units that were in the windows by simplying whacking them out with a sledge hammer or something. At least that is the way it looks.

Miller Hall, the former Immanuel School, is totally down. There are many stones from the building on the ground but all parts of the building that resemble walls are gone. Good bye forever Miller Hall. You can easily see the trailer which is called the LeBien addition which sat behind Miller Hall.

The construction on the Welcome Center is progressing slowly or so it seems to me. I assume they are working hard on the foundation parts of the building. There will be no basement. Of course this 100 degree heat must make it very difficult work. They have set up a fence that goes to the edge of the outer drive (the entrance drive from US 30) on the east and north sides as the drive curves around the new construction. On the west side of the construction site is the woods including the student bridge which sets in the woods. The east side of the bridge is only about 15 steps from the fence that surrounds the construction site. I assume they will build a path from the student bridge to the Welcome Center back door or west door or maybe a door facing US 30. The southwest corner of the Welcome Center will actually be a few feet north of the east end of the student bridge so if they do build that path it will have to curve a little to the north towards the chapel.

It's a summer of construction at Valpo but not nearly as intrusive to getting around campus as in the past. Except for the chapel renovation which is towards the middle and the Huegli Hall demolition most of the work is towards the edges of campus and hardly noticeable.
