ga southern over v tech? that's gotta be a nice win. as is loyola's win over miss st.

valporun

I think Georgia Southern's win was the bigger surprise than the Loyola win over Mississippi St. The Bulldogs have a new coach this year, so that played well in Loyola's case tonight.

bbtds

That was a big win for Ga Southern. Va Tech had beaten Okla. State, Iowa, Rhode Island and VMI. They had lost to West Virginia by 1 the Saturday before and that was the Hokies only loss until Ga Southern.

valporun

The other thing about Mississippi State...they have three scholarship athletes out with injuries, two with ACL tears, one with a wrist injury who is a leading scorer. Only having 8 players available hurts the Bulldogs in the long run of the season, and Loyola was able to take advantage of the short bench last night.

Valpo isn't the only HL team getting bumped off by a Summit League team. Tuesday night UIC got walloped by the Leathernecks of Western Illinois in Macomb, 70-54. That is only the 2nd loss of the season for the Flames.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/college/chi-western-illinois-ends-uics-win-streak-20121218,0,1643988.story

UIC led 10-1 as Crittle scored six early points, and the Flames maintained a lead through the balance of the half even as Western Illinois slowly chipped away.

The Leathernecks trailed 27-25 at halftime but blitzed the Flames 23-7 in the opening 10:11 of the second half. That stretch, which included 12 unanswered points, gave Western Illinois a 48-34 lead.

The Flames got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

Tuesday's game featured two of the nation's top defensive teams. Western Illinois entered the game fourth in scoring defense (51.1 points per game), while UIC was fifth (51.6 points).

valpotx

Looks like the Flames are just as inconsistent as us!  That is a bad loss as well
"Don't mess with Texas"

valporun

tx, I'm not sure that a UIC loss to WIU is "inconsistency". It's definitely an identity win for the Leathernecks and the Summit League now that the team most fans know about in that league having left it for a worse conference (ORU/Southland). Heck, I'll enjoy a 7-2 UIC Flames team at this time. When was the last time UIC was really worthy of talk, outside of conference play?

Nice win for Green Bay tonight. They knock off the Golden Eagles of Marquette by 2 at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon (you probably thought it was in Green Bay but it's actually in the suburb of Ashwaubenon near Lambeau Field-Lambeau sits just inside the city limit of Green Bay with many of it's parking lots are in Ashwaubenon).

UWGB wins thriller over Marquette

That shot that had been rolling off the rim for Alec Brown most of the season finally rolled in.

And those rebounds that had eluded him, this time he went after them hard.

it was the big shot and important rebounds by Brown that made the difference in the end.

The Phoenix's struggling 7-foot-1 junior got a jumper in the lane to bounce a couple of times on the rim and fall in with 2½ minutes left for what were essentially the game-winning points. What's more, he fought off Marquette's Davante Gardner and grabbed the game-clinching rebound with 1.5 seconds left after a missed 3-pointer by Marquette's Jake Thomas.

The sophomore guard (Keifer Sykes) scored a game-high 20 points, and sophomore forward Greg Mays added a season-high 11 points.

"It had to be the slowest game played in Division 1 this season," MU coach Buzz Williams said, "and that's probably the right approach to what coach Wardle is facing from a health standpoint." (only 8 healthy players)

"I kept telling them it was our tempo, keep it at that pace and I thought maybe we could pull it out in the end." Wardle said.

Here's what HC said about the 12/16/12 HL poll:

Quote from: HC on December 16, 2012, 11:01:09 PMHere is what I sent in to PantherU tonight.
UIC, Valpo, Detroit, YSU, Loyola, WSU, Green Bay, CSU, Milwaukee

I dropped CSU below GB mainly because of their injuries to key players.

Gary Waters Postgame at Akron (Dec. 23)

By the time Valpo plays Cleve State Junior Lomomba's foot should be healed & Devon Long should be back too. Anton Grady is pretty much done for the season with a torn meniscus.

http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/index.ssf/2012/12/cleveland_state_cant_hold_up_a.html

even as CSU freshman Junior Lomomba, who is recovering from a broken foot, delivered a career-high 16 points.

With 6-9 Anton Grady (knee) sidelined along with 6-8, 260-pound junior Devon Long (suspension), CSU was left with 6-7 Marlin Mason as the starting post, with 6-9 Luda Ndaye, who is recovering from hip surgery and 6-8 freshman Aaron Scales, off the bench. That trio combined for six points, all by Ndaye.

But a difficult stretch is over, as alternating six-game suspensions for Ndaye and Long ended with Long missing the Akron game. When the Vikings take on Rio Grande on Friday and Kent State on Jan. 2, they will be as close to full strength as they will be all season.

"There were some secondary [NCAA] violations in the athletic department, which we uncovered and self-reported, an extra-benefits issue," said CSU Athletic Director John Parry. "No other basketball players were involved."

BIG win for UNM tonight, giving Cincy their first loss.  That'll help a little :)

I would say.  Beating the #8 team on the road no less.  Given everything, even miracle should say that a 13 point loss on the road to New Mexico isn't looking all that bad.

According to Twitter, Cincy ran Pacer but the shot rimmed out.

Same New Mexico team lost to South Dakota State in Albq.   Go figure.
If So. Dak State played Cinci in Cinci are they big favorites?     ;)
