Samford is in the SoCon, not the OVC.  The Horizon versus other leagues is also available at the 2011-12 Horizon League men's basketball season's article on wikipedia.  I'd post the link but apparently I'm not allowed.

vuweathernerd

excellent. glad to see this thread is up again for this season. it was really interesting to see how it changed as last year progressed. thanks dylan for taking the lead on this!

dylanrocks

Thanks!

It's impossible to overstate the importance of Valpo's home victories over good teams from the MAC and A-10. These are the kinds of wins that set our league apart from the rest of the non-BCS conferences.

I think when you get to 5 posts, you'll be allowed to post links.  Cuts down on spammers.

That makes sense (he says trying to improve his post count).  Valpo has a season article on wikipedia, too.  Actually, all of the HL teams have one this year.  You can find them by going to wikipedia and searching "2011–12 Valparaiso Crusaders men's basketball team".

Through Thursday's games, the Horizon League is 39-32 overall and 27-31 against fellow Division 1 teams, with a record of 15-3 at home, 10-26 on the road and 2-2 on a neutral court. Last year H League members went 68-54 against D-1s and 80-54 overall.

The 27-31 record against Div. 1 teams doesn't look very good at first, but it seems more respectable when you notice that exactly twice as many games were played away (36) compared to home games (18).

milanmiracle

Of note 3-14 against BCS opponents. Victory's over DePaul, St. John's and Vandy

From Horizon League Twitter Tonight:

"Valpo wraps up the unofficial HL-MAC challenge with a win over Bowling Green. Horizon League finishes 5-2 on the day."

covufan

Hopefully, VU can help that record against the Summit League in the next 12 days!

valporun

Out of our last three OOC games before the new year, we need to win a lot of HL games, otherwise NIU and IUPUI are NOT going to help us that much, if they aren't winning games in conference play. Oakland will help, although 2 of their conference games will cancel out because of playing IUPUI twice. At this point, covufan, Valpo just needs to win games, and not worry about what the RPI mess.

I'm afraid it'll be easy to interpret it into a "we can only lose" situation.

Even if Oakland has a good season, if we win "We only beat a Mid-Con team".  If we lose, we lost to the Summit league!

But, should be a good game.  And, let's win it!

I think the league just got a big win when Butler beat Purdue.  Purdue in't ranked but still a nice win over the Big Ten!  Congrats to them.  Detroit put up  nice battle but lost to Miss. State by 5.  We need to get this win tonight!

Great win for Butler. Purdue had an RPI around 60, so hopefully we see a bump up from that win.
I believe that we will win.

wh

Even in a rebuilding year, they win a big game on a big stage.  Very impressive.

Butler fans have been on Andrew Smith repeatedly about never going up strong and slamming the ball when he gets it underneath the basket - even questioning whether he can even dunk in traffic.  Lo and behold they run a designed alley-oop at a crucial time in the game and he THROWS it down like he's been doing it all his life.  I don't think anyone expected that, including 5 Purdue players caught flat footed.  Good call by the coaching staff.

I still can't believe we are 0-3 against the Summit League this year.

Funny, that is what stuck out to me as well  :)

The problem I had with us in the Summit games this season, we played to their weaknesses, instead of taking advantage of them, and adding to our strengths. I don't look at this team being molded for next year as anything more than an excuse. We should be adjusting to the things that the opponent is taking advantage of, and if this means giving the green light or some true confidence to some of the transfers and younger guys, not just Kevin and Ryan, this would help our team in games. Some of the guys we keep harping on are struggling because they aren't being given the necessary confidence from the coaching staff that they can play this game. I mean Vucic was showing some real promise early in the non-conference season, and he was doing a good job of spelling Kevin inside, then all of a sudden he's sitting the bench and not seeing the court at all. In my opinion, Vucic was starting to look like he had an idea of what to do. He just needed the coaching staff to give him more confidence than what he was already getting. Give more confidence to the guys coming in off the bench, and it might help Ryan, Kevin, and Buggs not have to bear so much of the offensive and defensive spark to keep up in games.
