Sad news hearing one of Valpo's all time greats, David Redmon, passed way.  He had as smooth as a shot could be and helped put Valpo basketball on the map.

Not sure why his and Casey's numbers are not hanging in the ARC rafters. They should be.

Sorry to hear the news about David Redmon. I knew him since he was a student in middle school. Once saw him nonchalantly hit a half-court shot during a middle school game, and it wasn't taken to beat a shot clock. He had no limit to his range and might have been the best pure shooter ever at Valpo. The resurgence of Valpo basketball really began when he and Casey transferred to VU. They were fun to watch.

This popped up on my social media feed today, and I thought others might like to view it. There are many familiar faces and voices for me, both on camera and recognizable in the background. The players (and staff members) in this class were a special group, especially because at that time I was fortunate to experience many behind the scenes moments like the one here, which displayed to me that the high character of the individuals on the team frequently matched their fine basketball skills. The video also gives an interesting look at Bryce learning from Homer in his transition from a player to a coach. Enjoy!

One of my favorite memories is also one of the best HS games I've ever seen. 1990 Indiana Regional game with SB Riley and Valpo. The actual regulation game (no overtime, 32 minute HS game) score was 112 - 100, with Riley winning. Redmon was open and had green light to shoot anytime he crossed half court. Nearly same with Cavanaugh. Great watching those two future VU players, and what they built at VU.

pal- thanks for the awesome video, those were the days! Also, the team before Bryce did jumpstart the program and David Redmond was the key.

Valpo Alum and former Valpo/Baylor Assistant Coach, Mark Morefield, continues to make us 'proud' with antics such as this:

Ranking the Tourney coaches as "players" -- Bryce in at 6 and Scott in at 66.  I might have Bryce ahead of Tony Bennett (5), having watched both careers, and although their careers were very similar, including playing for the original Charlotte Hornets.  Bennet could croon a bit better than Bryce though .... Also interesting -- how many Duke and Indiana players in the top 10.

What a great podcast, Paul. Excellent job.

A really good bunch of guys, too. What a mix of personalities. They still enjoy each other's company.

Small, Padilla and the incoming coaching staff need to look no further in how to build a team with character.  How to implement is the excruciating tough part.

How and why doesn't Lottich or Gore make that same phone call to Lex?  Lex is one of the better leaders we have put on the floor.  He also holds a lot of the credit for bringing one of the best recruiting classes ever to valpo.  AND THAT WAS AS A SENIOR AT MARIST!!!!!!

Lex played 3 years for Lottich and Gore, how did they not make the same phone call?

I spoke to a former student who played 1 year with Lex at Boise.  Said "he was the best coach on the floor, a true point guard."

Last week AP's Euro League team lost the Euro League Tournament Championship by 1 point. For the season, he averaged appx. 13MPG and 5PPG and 17 and 7 in EuroLeague play.

Came across an interesting interview from last October, shortly after he joined his current team. Based on his comments there, I'm not sure the year worked out as well from a personal standpoint as he might have been hoping.

I see 19 mpg and 9.5 ppg in GBL, and 13.7 mpg and 4.6 ppg in EL play - https://basketball.eurobasket.com/player/Alec-Peters/309691

I inadvertently reversed his numbers. It should have read:

For the season, he averaged appx. 17MPG and 7PPG; 13MPG and 5PPG in EuroLeague play.

The most important measure are his numbers in EuroLeague play. EuroLeague teams play dissimilar opponents of varying quality outside of EuroLeague play.

Loved LaVonte. Excellent player. Grinder at both ends. Responsible for a lot of Valpo W's.

Agreed.  Someone that played with passion and was a bulldozer on the way to the hoop.  Carved out a nice 6 year professional basketball career in Europe: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaVonte_Dority
