UIC had their best non-conference win of the season after Dixon goes down with injury for the season by beating Northern Arizona by 10. Tai Odiase had 24 for the Flames. 2 Freshmen and a red shirt freshman also contributed 28 points collectively in the win (Boahen, Ottey, Matthews) as the Flames burned down the forest on the Lumberjacks (come on, that was so easy).

The Crusaders better have their fire retardant armor on for the match up at the Pavilion on Dec. 30 Friday afternoon at 5:00 p.m./4:00 p.m. EST/CST. This season will ring hallow if we lose so early to UIC.

UIC was stagnant on offense at the start, though it didn't last. Odiase muscled his way to five early points, but the Lumberjacks led at the first timeout, 8-5. The Flames sent in four fresh bodies to compete alongside Odiase and the second unit delivered. Dominique Matthews erupted for 11 points in a row to turn UIC's deficit into a 15-10 lead with 10:52 remaining in the half.
The score was later tied at 20-20 with 7:39 to go in the period after NAU's Jordyn Martin scored inside. On the next possession, UIC's Ferguson canned a 3-pointer that set off a nine-point run spanning just over two minutes to build a 29-20 lead for the home team.
Northern Arizona outscored UIC, 12-5, over the final four minutes of the half, but the Flames maintained a 34-32 lead as the teams retreated to the locker room at the half.
Still nursing a two-point lead with a shade over 16 minutes to go in the game, an acrobatic layup by Marcus Ottey launched a 14-1 run that was capped by a 3-pointer from Kyle Guice with 11:38 remaining. Guice's triple gave UIC a 50-35 lead, its largest of the game to that point.
The passing remained crisp like when Ferguson fed Odiase who slammed home the pass for two of his 24 points with 7:32 to go.
A few minutes later, Ottey took off through the trees for the dunk of the day, off another pass from his classmate Ferguson. That jam put UIC ahead by 17 points, 64-47, with less than five minutes remaining.
UIC's lead reached a game-high 19 points with 3:19 left in the contest when Michael Kolawole netted two of his seven points.
Northern Arizona trailed by 18 still with 64 seconds to go, but the Lumberjacks scored 10 unanswered points in the final minute, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer that fell in off the glass.

uh.... NAU is 2-10 with an RPI of 331.... their only wins are over #341 and #335... not a quality win at all!... the Flames best win is #221 DePaul and #224 CalPoly...   They do get to warm up tomorrow night against Roosevelt University.

We should have a pretty nice Valpo crowd at the UIC game which I will be attending!!  Right now the Alumni site has sold 182 tickets for the game.

I think UIC is better without Dekembe.  They have put a nice winning streak together since he left early in the Depaul game.  They will be tough.

Ok, should have said "one of the best." What I was trying to emphasize was that they did this after Dixon was gone for the season.

valpotx

I don't think that UIC has any chance against us, without Dixson.

That event was a lot of fun last year. I'm sorry to miss it.

It sounded like an even better deal this year!

Darn, UIC almost pulled it out.  I didn't see the play, but it sounds like Odiase had a last second inside shot blocked by Hayes.

Is there a more overrated coach than Greg Kampe? This is why Oakland does not scare me in the tourney. No way that guy can win three games.

Watched the last two minutes of that game. Wow. Some sloppy play by both teams and poor shot selection by Oakland. #4 on Detroit had two boneheaded turnovers while Oakland had a 10 second violation.

Will be a big game for sure. I guess it could put us into a three-way tie with Oakland and Green Bay? And give Oakland the realistic edge on tie-breakers?

I saw the last bit of the first half. I think there was a dunk by each team in the last ten seconds. Blazing fast pace. Very difficult to watch televised basketball on that black court. (ESPN2 no less...)

I don't particularly remember Hogan from the game at the ARC. I guess he is their leading scorer, 15 PPG, 5 RPG. Fouled out against us. 8 points, but did manage 5 offensive boards for 8 total.

His previous career high was this season against Northern Kentucky, 22 points.

Youngstown State and UIC 69-69 with 4:04 to go... Odiase just fouled out.  Morse has 30+ again.

in OT, Flames 92-89; Cameron Morse... 40 points for the guins.

This week's POW will be interesting !

I'm guessing Hogan because they beat Oakland on his great game.

(On  personal note, I switched over to the Yale-Princeton game.  I graduated from High School in that arena.... a long time ago...  that scorer's table was my first as a HS Kid intern.

Probably so. Particularly if they come out on Monday (chance of a holiday delay?), with nothing this week to water down his numbers in average.
