Title: 1/10 @ Detroit Mercy Titans
Post by: oklahomamick on January 09, 2016, 11:18:17 AM
As mentioned, let's separate the Oakland/Detroit game.  Titans bring different challenges.  Big question, will the Crusaders be mentally prepared after a ESPN2 game at Oakland?  The commissioner wrote a good piece on their blog and is worth reading.  I will be catching a 6am flight from Tulsa and will be at the game in Detroit.  Not too many direct flights from Tulsa but Detroit is one of them and after last nights game, I'm very excited.  And I've always wanted to see a game at Mercy.  Hope standby can get a seat and hope our guys are focused with a good game plan.

The sagarin line has the good guys as 9 point favorites.

Looks like a good write-up, though I'm not sure where he's getting his turnover numbers from.

That's their message board, in any case, for reference. And the VU game thread in particular.

C'mon commish...no one thinks it was clean foul. It was a harder then necessary foul and he got what he deserved. At the same time, had Doug just dunked it instead of trying to windmill and blow he roof off the gym he probably never gets caught by slow motion Capo.

Onto this year.....
Detroit is the team I always worry about most. They always have athletes and until recently Valpo hasn't had athletes. Now we do, and our athletes are bigger. Valpo made one statement yesterday and will make another one tomorrow. Valpo wins 76-62.

Why worry so much about Detroit? Don't you know who their coach is, and he doesn't have his son on the team any more?

The athletes and the weird venue always worry me. However Detroit has the worst coach in D1 and Valpo has great defense and knows how to win. Valpo in a close and ugly one: 61 - 55

I'm predicting that the momentum from Oakland carries over and we win by 15-20.

Are the Titans .....

Bigger and/or
Faster and/or
More Skilled

.... than Oakland?

Can't be all three.  So, if not, regardless of how well our offense clicks, our D will control the game.

UDM Is #10 of 10 in Scoring Defense; we are #1.

Any word on Keith's foot and can EVN be asked to go 15 minutes? Who is our 3'rd string point or would Bryce just draw a name out of the hat?

I know Shane has sometimes been bringing the ball up but has his play truly fit the point guard definition? So is our starting point from 2 years back (Lexus) now relegated to the 3rd string, 4'th string, or 5'th string position? A part of me is hoping that Max and Lexus can both find some mid-season playing time but Detroit might not be the ideal location for the experience.

Bryce is an 8 to 9 man rotation coach, as is pretty common among most top coaches today. He doesn't feel Lexus is in his top 9. Let's not overlook he had 2 major knee surgeries and doesn't have the same speed as he had before the injuries.

Took me some hunting among the blizzard of small sports channels, but it seems that in Valpo the game's on CSN Chicago.  Channel 37 on my Comcast.

http://americansportsnet.com/schedule/ (http://americansportsnet.com/schedule/)
has a search box which might help you get started in your zip code.

(CSN Chicago is not the same as Comcast Sports Network, etc.)

Also ESPN3 online, which should hopefully mean a quick archive, etc.

The real question is this...  Is it possible that Lexus may someday regain a good portion of his former speed, or is it now gone forever.  Wishful thinking is that it is just a long slow process to retrain the tendons to be as springy as they once were.  However, the fact that they recruited an undersized/speedy point guard for next year makes me wonder.

He was my favorite player on the team when he was a freshman, so I really hope that sometime in the next 2 years we see him back to normal.  :)

As mentioned prior, this team exerted a lot of energy on Friday night.  I expect us to be a step slow on defense and for a few guys to get into foul trouble because of it.  I still think we win, but it will be uncomfortably close with Detroit doing a lot of damage from the free throw line.

On _TV_ it was choppy?  I've never seen that.

For me, five minutes ago, unless I was really messed up, CSN (Chicago) wasn't showing the game at all. It was some random bit about sports memorabilia.  (It's on CSN for me now - standard feed, fine quality. ) While the game was on ESPN3 and WVUR.  Unless I somehow repeatedly had the wrong channel, then got it right?  Or they had some weird, long commercial on?

Anybody else seeing this?

Good start for Valpo, at least!

Very nice to see him explode.  From what I saw in five minutes everything was just an offensive explosion.  Peters slam dunk.  Dirty passing from peters.  Crazy dirty dribbling from Skara.  Looked like they could do no wrong.

We are primarily a defensive team, but we can sure put up points (although Oak and Det have mediocre defenses).

Refs went a little crazy with the whistles in the second half.

Looked a little too close to previous Valpo-Detroit games for a few minutes there, but we stuck together and pulled it out.

Peters -- wow.

Was this game perfect? No. There are lessons to learn, but we got an 18 point win on the road against one of the better HL teams. Gotta feel pretty good.

Might be hard to track down that "most points in a half" stat but great to see Alec claim a piece of Brandon Wood's most points in a D1 game record. Awesome to see that he -can- explode.  (Wood's points against GA Southern were more balanced, so there's a chance at least that Alec holds the single half record alone.)

11-11 you figure he's got a shot at the VU single game FT% record too, but I don't know if anyone keeps it. (The Horizon record is 18-18, and was in a league game.)

You think he can wrest POTW away from Felder, for a change?

Most points we've allowed in a win this season, but most points we've scored and probably above our average win margin, so maybe OK.

Our "win when Tevonn" scores 15 streak is still going strong.

(I hesitate to mention it on this thread, but RPI Forecast's calculated chance for us to run the regular season should rise to at least 13%.)

Could an RPI of 24 be the best Valpo's had in January?

Our defense slipped a little, according to KenPom, but still hanging in at #2 in the country.  Our offense improved enough to push us to #19 overall... highest ranking ever? Certainly the highest I've seen this season.

Wow!  What a trip!  A couple of things caught my eye.  First, our starting five had 12 assts and 3 turnovers.  Overall 14 assts and 10 TOs.  We out rebounded them by 8 and shot 87.9 from the line!  Vashil had an off night but still had 3 blks.  Our defense let down in the second half but give them credit for adjusting and shooting very well. Still, 45 points in one half is not Valpo like.  Keith is turning into that kid who Majerus thought would be the best player he had recruited.  Today, 7 assts and zero TOs!  Great performance all around.

Oh yeah, what the heck is with Paris Bass?  Suspended for 7 games and today didn't start--for some reason.  This kid has NBA potential but again, getting the right players who can play within the system is so important.  Ray has had issues in this area for a long time.

Another nice road win.  Wasn't too surprised that Detroit made a run to make it interesting, I imagine it is hard to stay as focussed defensively when you are just beating someone like they stole something.  Nice way to finish the game strong, and how about that Peters kid.  He is pretty good at basketball.  Alec is going to get a lot of press time, but Tevo Walker was outstanding both games and if he keeps hitting those threes at the rate he has been.........

These 2 games in Detroit were probably the best week-end road trip that I can remember for a VU team.  Even though we had a few let-downs, both performances were pretty much dominating...and against 2 good teams.  This was Detroit's first home loss this season.  It was great publicity for Valpo as both games were network games and I would hope they will help in recruiting.

Felder and Bass combined for 19 PPG against us on a pathetic 13-46 (28%) from the field.

Alec averaged 27 PPG on a combined 18-30 FG (60%), 14-15 FT (93%), and 12.5 RPG and 2 double-doubles.

Alec is off to a great start toward league MVP.

Alec also had a crap-ton (official measurement) of rebounds in both games as well.

And whoever is nominated will have to face off with Cameron Morse from YSU - dropped 44 last night, averaged somewhere around 28 for the week as the Penguins went 2-1 - anybody know the last time YSU won twice in the same week?

Not to diminish TW's contributions, but I don't I don't think you relegate the guy who averages 27 PPG, 13 RPG, and sets our all-time single game scoring record to "also received votes."  The last thing I want the HL office to take into account is how many awards specific players have gotten in the past or might get in the future. That would take an already somewhat subjective process to a whole new level of subjectivity.
