Valpo Basketball / Re: Women's Team

All very good points. I remember that win at Ball State two years ago when we started the game with 7, dropped to 6 when Shaquira Scott tore her ACL, and finished with 5 after Tabitha Gerardot fouled out (side note: watch her play tonight when Indiana beat Indiana State, 11 and 8...and she fouled out).

Hopefully we can get some people back. Numbers are good to get through games, the experience will be good to hopefully get through some wins down the road!

Splash page on Oakland's site for their "quarterfinal" soccer game with Valpo says "Catch the action live on the Horizon League Network"

Also, WVUR will already be on the road that day with women's basketball at Illinois. So it looks like HLN and live stats for sure.

QuoteWhat is the libero?
...
The libero is chosen by the team before the match or tournament and that designated player must remain the libero for the entire match or tournament. If the libero is injured, he/she can be replaced by any player who is not on the court, but that player must remain the libero for the remainder of the match.
Quick clarification for college volleyball: The libero designation is submitted with the lineups prior to each set in NCAA volleyball (quoting NCAA Rule 12.1.1), so you can start a different set with a different libero than was used previously. Not that it happens much, but I saw it happen in a match I covered last weekend. In any case, the only scenario for a change within a set is due to injury.

Keep in mind, Ladd became eligible near the end of non-conference play, so most of their wins came once she started playing. UE also had some injuries last season, Ladd included as MVC play went along.

I'm curious to see how this year's team plays. I covered the women's team extensively as a junior and senior, and Carr and Horton are the only players I saw in action for Valpo during my time at school that are still here (Richardson sat out in her first year, my final year at Valpo).

Other Sports / Track?

Is there any progress towards a track around Brown Field?

One of my high school teammates was just announced as a new assistant track and field coach and it reminded me of this. The Master Plan itself (http://www.valpo.edu/masterplan/assets/docs/VU%20MP%20Exec%20Summary_final.pdf) only has a mention in a "Football with Track" label on one of its images while the Future Campus Map (http://www.valpo.edu/masterplan/assets/docs/Masterplan_Map_poster.pdf) suggests we should have a track by 2032. Might we see it any sooner than that?

Valpo Football / Re: Different Perspective on Football
October 10, 2013, 02:17:20 PM
I am heading to Evansville and Southern Illinois on a volleyball broadcasting trip this weekend and found some great quotes from UE's new volleyball coach that could be something to think about from the perspective of our football team.

For those that don't follow UE volleyball (a lot of you, probably), they been in a "rebuilding phase" of sorts for more than a decade. They continually lose most of their conference matches and finish in the bottom half of the league. They hired a new head coach, Manolo Concepcion, after Mike Swan resigned to go to Valdosta State. The follow quotes come from a UE release about the 2013 volleyball schedule where Concepcion talks about the challenge of competing with an active non-conference schedule on top of an already challenging MVC slate:

Quote"The most important opponent will be ourselves; we need to learn how to win again. In order to achieve such goal, our character, work ethic, and passion for competing has to remain consistent with the ultimate objective: maximize the potential that we have as a team," Concepcion continued.
"There will be a lot more focus on the process. The small details will determine our long term results, meaning that expectations will be as high as our willingness to improve and determination to push ourselves harder than ever before."

I forget how this compares to any of Dale's first-year quotes (the only one I remember is, "From this day forth, we aspire to nothing but greatness"), but just wanted to throw this out because it caught my attention and made me think of a comparison

Valpo Football / Re: Campbell @ Valpo
September 28, 2013, 03:49:44 PM
Campbell retakes the lead on a "Receiver-Reverse-Option-Pass" (pgmado's description) and Valpo responds with a touchdown of its own, but misses the extra point...

Seinfeld reference coming...

Newman!

But all jokes aside, one point game currently favoring Campbell about midway through the fourth quarter. Big kickoff return into Valpo territory by Campbell

I've had WVUR on my laptop since halftime and it's working for me. I also have the video tab up in case it comes back.

Sounds like Campbell just kicked a field goal. I believe it's now 28-21 Camels early in the second half

Great start to the season and a fantastic intro video. "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark" seems more-or-less like the go-to intro music. I've heard a lot of teams in different sports use it already in 2013. Keep it going, ladies!

On a positive note, the WVUR webcast appears to be working. I even heard my own voice just a moment ago on a couple promos.

Dissapointed that the WVUR radio stream is not working.  Needed a Todd fix with no success.
I've heard that the issue is with Valpo IT. Summer changes might have inadvertently rerouted the webcast output, wouldn't be the first time that's happened. #ItsITsFault

Valpo on the board!!! Muffed punt gives the Crusaders another chance and Valpo barely clears the bar on a field goal! It's now 42-3 North Dakota early in the 3rd quarter.

UND radio originally announced Pando, but they've backtracked and said it was Young.

So it's 42-0 now? Just heard North Dakota returned a kickoff for a touchdown to open the half. Just rejoined the coverage during the Crusaders' possession

Listening to North Dakota radio via TuneIn. Met Paul Ralston, one of their broadcasters, last year for a basketball game I covered. Great guy, though he was suspended for two games last basketball season for using "choke job" in a post-game interview with the head coach after a tough loss.

Also of note about UND, they won't have a nickname again until 2015. North Dakota used to be the "Fighting Sioux" until the NCAA helped pressure the school to drop the moniker. When the nickname was discontinued, a new state law promoted a "cooling off" period until a new moniker would officially be adopted.

28-0, early 2nd quarter. 50+ yard pass to set up the latest score. This Greg Hardin guy is really good.
