OK, but now you've finished your Dickey's BBQ post game meal. Now about this Milwaukee team that is 7-3 at home. (0-11 on the road). One at a time guys! One at a Time.
This will be a difficult game. Not only on their home court but because they are getting hot.
Valpo 69
Milwaukee 62
It will be a grinder, but I don't think that Milwaukee has someone that can guard Peters like WSU, CSU, and GB have been able to do. He shows his true talent again in this game.
Will we finally see Keith this game??
Quote from: Valpofan00 on February 13, 2015, 11:48:38 PMWill we finally see Keith this game??
I think Keith truly thought he was going to be ready for the Green Bay game but the time on the sideline didn't match with the normal down time. I still believe Keith will be back around the fourth week in February which is either the WSU game at home or the game at Detroit.
Valpo by a dozen. I'm excited to get to go to this game and the party before hand. Hoping this little storm we are having this morning doesn't drop too much snow on us.
78-66
Valpo by 20!
Valpo by 2 - and I say this with a glass half full. A definite trap game. They cannot come out and play like they did against UIC.
I think Bryce - and the team - are too smart to be "tricked" by the overly-used and relatively new term "trap game."
If recent history holds true... the louder fan base will be from Valpo. Last year the concession line in Milwaukee at halftime looked like Section C and H from the ARC ! Certainly a hometown feel.
Over the past few seasons Valpo has played well in Milwaukee. We are by far the better team in terms of talent, coaching, execution. Basically all aspects of the game. But the game is on the road after we just won the biggest game of the season, to this point. I hope Valpo comes out fired up realizing the opportunity they have in front of them to win the conference.

Agreed, in many ways this is the classic trap game considering that UWM is 5-0 in their last five conference home games. But then again it's not really a trap if everyone knows its a trap, too.
I'm really interested in seeing how this team responds tomorrow. Honestly, I think we'll respond fine. 1 game cushions are nice, but the great thing about last night's win IMO is that if UWGB wins the league, we can only blame ourselves instead of pinning indirect blame on Jerry Slocum for not being able to hold a lead. I think we'll continue the process of closing tomorrow.

Many factors will perk them up and avoid the trap game. Good group of VU fans. Daytime game with chance to get home and enjoy the night. Just feels like a win by 10+ Wright State is the trap game. Week night against an underdog. They're also studying ahead for tests so they can leave early on break. .
Are we sending a student bus to this game? Always loved seeing 60-70 Valpo students to their 5.

There's one, or more, alumni buses. Not sure about students - I've not noticed anything on campus. But, I'm not quite sure how the student section is organized this year. I hear their announcements for the scholarship competition, but I'm not sure beyond that.

From Alumni Association:
Good evening everyone!
Unfortunately the weather isn't cooperating with us to have everyone go see the Crusaders take on UW-Milwaukee. Our bus company has told us that they do not feel safe driving up to Milwaukee tomorrow. Therefore, we needed to cancel the bus leaving from Valpo.
You are more than welcome to drive up to the Nunuemaker residence for the pregame reception and are more than welcome to watch the game. However, we are unable to charter the bus.
We of course will refund you either the entire cost of the trip or the cost of the bus ride if you do choose to attend the event anyway.
Stay Warm!

I already want to punch these announcers and the game hasn't started. These guys are the worst in the Horizon. Made a swipe about Valpo's brown.
Couldn't have planned a slower start. Time to wake up.
I am not sure that it is physically or celestially possible for the offense to be more sluggish. Move the ball...move without the ball!
T. Walker and AP are going to have to become more aggressive on offense. Scorers have to score.
New worst announcer ever. Perpetual whiner. Focused on nothing but the officiating. Complaining about this "new" official, as if they got some guy out of the stands and gave him a whistle. Where's the color commentator so this idiot can rest his voice?
I don't remember the last time we were down at halftime.
Not sure what is worse so far - Milwaukee's announcer or how Valpo played. Just sluggish with no real momentum or energy on offense. Zone at the end of the half seemed to confuse Milwaukee, so perhaps we'll see more zone in the second as Valpo tries to wedge out a 50-49 win. Darn ugly so far.
Bryce not taking a timeout there to set up the final possession of the half was piss poor coaching, imo. We are so sloppy and disorganized this game.
No idea why you felt Bryce not calling a timeout was bad coaching. He did not have one to give. Valpo got an open three from Peters - not sure what more you could hope for.
Rob Jeter not ordering his team to foul on that last possession was bad coaching, since Milwaukee only had 5 fouls. Wish Peters had made that three.
First time I've heard complaints about Bryce NOT burning timeouts in first half.
Need to force more "block charges" in the 2nd half, get to the line.
What do you mean he did not have one to give?
Yeah, we ended up with a good look. Complete luck stone that hasn't been the norm all game. And still it was a deep three at the end of a helter skelter possession. I saw it as very important we put forth our best chance at closing the half time gap to 3 or 2.

My frustration with the new worst announcer is no doubt influenced by my frustration with our listless play. If we come back and take control of the game in the 2nd half, I'm sure the mindless babbling will bother me far less. ;)
You get five timeouts for the game, but lose one if you don't use it in the first half. Bryce used the timeout with 12:00 left in first half.
T Walker with dunk of the decade for valpo hoops. Wowzas. Like the way momentum is swinging.

Sure, but that doesn't preclude him from taking the fourth at a critical time in the first half. You're just saying it's more valuable to hang on to that TO rather than use it for they possession. Maybe you're right.
Need to continue this effort through the rest of the game.
New worst comment from this announcer.."Valpo has a long history of floppers".
Wonder who these notorious Valpo flop artists are?
Some notorious floppers from Valpo? Name names, if you're going to make allegations!
I do appreciate that the guy calling the game is colorful. And he seems... somewhat knowledgable about Valpo and the league. Sort of refreshingly honest, I guess, that he's willing to show the edges of his knowledge. Not the most professional, perhaps, but sort of a folksy, hometown, call. With a sort of Wisconsin small-city twist.
Alec's had his ten for a while. Surely we'll get to 51. Gotta find a way to win.

How can that be over and back? How was it supposed to get back there if it wasn't knocked? Walker's supposed to have touched it?
But, maybe they gave us that out-of-bounds call...
Terrible call on the over and back, but Valpo got a little passive in defense for two straight possessions.
Over and back call cost us 3 points and half the lead.
Wasn't sure about Tevonn taking the air out of the tires there... but it worked, in the end. Close call.

Uwm announcer was so bad he ended up being pretty funny by the end. Officiating was terrible by all 3. But have to fight through it and adjust. We did get more physical and started getting turnovers and 50/50 balls. Winning on the road in the HL is never easy and this was a "trap game." Plus, we were able to work in KC for good minutes and he helped spur the comeback, especially with the Vashil alley-oop.

Hysterical!! :rotfl: We need a new conference.
Great second half to pull out a big win! Great job!
I was listening to Todd who provided an entertaining and exciting broadcast. Big win in difficult situation, and outstanding adjustments by Valpo in the second half.
Good to see that I wasn't the only one amused by the ridiculous announcer. He definitely takes the title as worst HL announcer, with his constant b!tching about the referees, and continuously mentioning that 2/3 of the refs were new (and thus, must not know anything, of course?!).
That dunk by Tevonn was absolutely disgusting. I had figured that he threw it into the net, but he threw it down so hard on the 6'10" guy, that I didn't even see it get above the rim! They call that, 'nuts on your chin' ;). Vashil had a bad game on offense, but still brought good intensity on D. One of his worst games of the season on O, as he looked like Jr. Vashil in that area, but glad to see that he didn't carry it to the other end.
Good win, and definitely a grinder.
Coming in Milw was 5-1 at home in conference, including a blowout win over Oakland last Tuesday. A win by any score over a team that good at home is a good win. I would expect them to give CSU a very good game when they host them next Sunday.
Good road win. Got KC some minutes. Everyone looked tired. Alec shot at buzzer before half was short I think because he had no lift in the legs. He was short on a free throw at the end of the game for same reason. We are mentally and physically tired. We need a couple days and a home game.

I found this rather amusing. Just because you don't recognize them doesn't mean they're new...
Today's officials:
Jeff Spedoske - Officiated 126 D1 games in past 7 seasons
http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/jeff-spedoske (http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/jeff-spedoske)
Matt Potter - Officiated 257 D1 games in past 8 seasons
http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/matt-potter/schedule (http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/matt-potter/schedule)
Mike Brya - Officiated 31 D1 games in past 4 seasons
http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/mike-brya/schedule (http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/mike-brya/schedule)
If I remember his comments correctly, he mentioned that he was familiar with Spedoske, but the other 2 must be new...
At the end the guy says, "Not a lot of fouls called in this game - and I like it better that way."
But the UWM announcers have always been terrible. I would catch conference games on the radio back in Milwaukee and you'd think the other team would be running with the ball down the court with one arm out not dribbling the way they'd complain.

I'm almost afraid to bring it up, but I wonder if Tevonn will be considered worthy this week of FOW by the technicians at the HL office:
16 PPG Avg.
13-28 FG (46.4% FG)
4-4 FT (100%)
5.5 RPG
2.5 SPG
At 6-1 posterized MIL 6-10 center
I guess there weren't many fouls called in this game unless it was almost a completely ridiculous foul, either a flop of a complete mugging. I have but one question, how does Tevonn not shoot one free throw in this game?

Tevonn's dunk was the turning point in this game. This game had a Trap game written all over it but our
It is hard to believe that so much leadership and maturity is shown by a bunch of freshmen and sophomores. I continuously have to remind myself that Skara and Walker are only freshmen... oh and Alec is only a year older.
The future is bright...and so is the present.
According to Oren that was our first half time deficit since Oakland January 2nd.
That announcer for Milwaukee has done games for awhile. He used to refer to Homer as "smiling Homer" as if Homer were some sort of con artist.
Good grinding game... Not an easy game, Milwaukee isn't terrible and their good at home. Just 3 games left. Glad that KC got on the court today, Bryce limited his minutes but he looked good and I'm guessing he's gonna have 20+ next weekend against WSU.
Tevonn is by far the best freshman in the league, it's not even close. Bass does score but you look at where Valpo is compare that to Detroit and what Walker has done in key situations. Tevonn is the reason we won many of our games, perhaps both this weekend. His athleticism and passion is unmatched on the court. He doesn't just do it on the offense but the defense as well. He just makes plays.
Nice to be 24-4 and 11-2 in league play! Win for Vashil on senior day, just 3 more games before tourney time.
Not to rain on any parades, but although Tevonn had a good game (6 boards, 4 steals, 3 assists), it took him 16 shots to score 12 points...which...not a good ratio.
Cf. Darien Walker--who often struggles with this--18 points on 9 shots, or 2.67 times more effective a shooter; Peters 15 points on 9 shots (2.22x better use of shots).
...well, if we give him 10 points for that awesome dunk, though...
And let's hear it for the return of KC--3 dimes including that setup for Vashil--and the go-ahead bucket.
a3, awesome work on the Vines. Maybe please make a them thread on here just for them so they're easily found for posterity?
Scoring wise Tevonn didn't have the greatest of nights, he still had 4 steals and even an off night offensively he still greatly effects the game, he basically had the play of the night.
He is most deserving of FoY award. When Valpo played Detroit Bass was an enigma, he fouled out and had a zero impact on the game. Tevonn impacts the game in many different ways, he can score, pass, play defense, he is an all-around player. Bass is a very talented player but he isn't as complete as Tevonn is, 12 points on 16 shots isn't the greatest but he always finds ways to positively effects the game.

Tomorrow will be an interesting test, after a decent win, and another expected win. And a little help from Stephen F Austin. Can we gain a little momentum with voters? At least a second AP vote? And some additional coaches votes? Maybe a place, or most of a place, in the MM top 25?
Seems like if you're in the top 25 you should be practically a shoe-in for an at-large. And, winning out, it feels like we're in no kind of shoe-in at large position. Bubble discussion, maybe, but outside looking in. We're talking high 40's RPI? Maybe high 30's if we win out the tournament. With easy beefs to pick re quality wins, medium-bad losses, and SOS.
At-large caliber would be ~12 seed caliber?
Top 25 would be 6-7 seed?
Anyway, no, I'm not feeling top 25. But, it'd be good momentum for the NCAA. A nice win streak!
There's a tweet about Valpo from Seth Davis can't post it cuz the file it too large?? Anyone else see it?

What's funny is I don't see anyone bitching about Murray State's ranking - the team we beat by 35 with the same number of losses in the 29th ranked conference (going by memory) and with a lower RPI.

Nice! If Feinstein keeps us (and to whom should he go?), we're picking up votes.
Looks like Davis' ballot changed quite a bit from last week to this.

Dumping his #21, 22, 25. And Stephen F. Austin.
Look how far IU has fallen. From losing in the nation championship game in 2002... to not making it past the Sweet 16 since... to bickering about Valpo showing up in some top 25 polls.
When does the new poll come out

Tomorrow morning. We'll have 2 votes at least, assuming Feinstein didn't get too drunk tonight.

I love this Valpo talk on the national stage! Potentially could be a top 25 team! Will be interesting to see the number of votes Valpo picks up in the polls tomorrow.
If we want to have nice things (Host HL Tournament / NCAA Appearance / Top 25 ranking) we are going to need to win our next 5 games. No easy task. Going to need a lot of focus and a little bit of luck. Today, Nickerson looked like he was in more pain than normal, probably a result of the short turnaround from the GB game. CSU will also be a short turnaround after the Detroit game. Absolutely going to need Carter back at a semi-high level by the CSU game.
Love EVN. Great heart. After KC went down we'd never be where we are without him.

Rod Moore? ;) If that was an _E_ Victor Nickerson dunk it would make total sense!
I guess G and r aren't _too_ far apart on the keyboard...
#9 on Sportscenter, by the way! With CSU taking #6.
He made it! Was #9 on the SportsCenter Top 10. I can finally go to bed.

Wonder who these notorious Valpo flop artists are?
Well known in Hawaii, flip-flop art is very in vogue on the islands

Thanks for taking 1 for the team and capturing that!
WH- I was bitching about Murray St. being ranked higher than us and I only received one response, "that was at the beginning of the year and they haven't lost since then."
Both teams leading their division in the OVC have fallen short to valpo this year. Let's make a move to the OVC? :-X
Imagine if E. Victor made the game winning runner in Green Bay and we kept a 7 point lead late in the second half against Oakland or Felder didn't shoot 100 free throws, we would not only be undefeated in HL with 1st rapped up but most likely be ranked top 25 now.
Then again, we could lose at Detroit and CSU and fall out of the little national talk we are receiving and into 3rd or 4th place quickly.
Here is my response to those who say...

I know that Murray State has not lost since we gave them a wake up call, but the OVC is ranked below the Summit League. We would probably run the table in the OVC. Their best win is projected to be Illinois State.

I think it would have been top 5 if not for ALL-STAR weekend.

They didn't seem to understand that this was 6'1" vs 6'10". Should have been ranked higher.
Next years intro video before we play Milwaukee should just be two minutes of that dunk.
Back to the game. Tiby played all 40 minutes, went only 3-11 from the field, but grabbed 8 rebounds. While we played man I would cringe every time he got the ball as he was mostly guarded by Darien at 6' 3". I am not certain that Darien won but he clearly held his own in a mismatch that UWM should have been able to exploit.

One could say that their offense became stagnant due to them trying to force the offense to run through Tiby because of the matchup. But it's not like we were forced into this "mismatch". Bryce chose this matchup and had the usual post trapping defense in place. Unfortunately a couple times Vashil didn't do a great job of it and Panoske (sp?) hit a couple 3's in the first half. Either way I liked the choice because it keeps Alec out of a position where he could easily get into foul trouble and also allow him to go get rebounds with more freedom than battling on the block for them.
1. I'm pretty sure it's "Penoske"
2. I asked Jimmy Lemke, who was sitting courtside opposite the Panther bench with a birds-eye view (we were blocked in 221), and although he didn't see the over-and-back call in the 2nd half, he said they laughed out loud several times at the ridiculous calls that Milwaukee was getting. Said this ref crew was horrible. He said on the jump ball that Tiby secured with Fernandez, Tiby wasn't even touching the ball.
3. My own take was that the only possible way that call was right is if the defender never touched it, but if I remember right, that conclusion would be borderline absurd.
4. At any rate, the pbp guy had no reason whatsoever to bitch if he was saying the Panthers got screwed. They were, per usual, bad both ways.
5. The guy doing PA for the game is the guy I'm used to hearing doing Panther broadcasts that aren't on TV (used to be Darren Sutton on the call), and I thought he was the worst. Maybe the guy yesterday studied under him. From the sounds of things, neither one of them aspires to do national broadcasting in real life because I would hope such displays of unprofessionalism are not tolerated at that level.
They were going to let him shoot 3s all day....he was that wide open for a reason, and the reason wasn't because Vashil was playing poorly.
Another gem from the UWM broadcast guy was when he said he only knew of one ref but you can't trust the other 2 guys...are you kidding me? You can't trust them?
Almost forgot the one where Tevonn forced a hook shot at the end of the shot clock and it hit the backboard... He got his own rebound and airballed a tough fadeaway. The announcer insisted Tevonn was trying to "throw it down" again and missed a dunk completely and that he may show up on both the top 10 and not top 10.

I know this. The trap is supposed to be hard and on the catch. Which makes any kind of good kick out pass difficult. A couple of times Tiby was able to make an easy pass straight to Panoske. Regardless if he can shoot or not, that's not what you want when trapping the post. Obviously you are going to want him or Springs taking outside shots. No doubting that. Just saying the trap wasn't as good as were accustomed to seeing.

The biggest disappointment I will have due to Milwaukee not playing in the HL tourney is that there will be no "Guess the amount of hair on Tiby's head for the HL tourney contest."

Since they are ineligible for Postseason play, I would have redshirted him.
The player has to want to redshirt too. Given that they're not that great--they might be able to win the first game they hosted, but certainly wouldn't be picked to advance--it seems like a pretty steep price to pay, to practice for 12 months in exchange for two extra games later.

Very complementary to Tevonn. Jeter did a nice job with the presser.
Listening to him talk about Mikwaukee's six minute scoring drought, I sure remember those from Valpo in seasons past. Not too many this year - so many scoring threats!

Watch this video starting at 4:30 "Well,,,,He is just so strong" "Did he dunk that one to? He might have dunked all of them." the look on his face says it all.
They also showed the postgame on the jumbotron at Panther Arena. I saw some of it while I was there.
Kinda wish Valpo did that too.
