Title: Game #14 - @ UIC Friday Dec 30, 4pm (CT)
Post by: talksalot on December 28, 2016, 11:18:27 PM
OK, 10-3 is a nice place to be... means nothing starting Friday at the Pavilion.  National TV audience.  Time to get off on the right foot.  Our RPI fell 12 points PLAYING Chicago State.   The Flames RPI is #254, Chicago State is #252.

Here's the Roster
http://www.uicflames.com/roster.aspx?path=mbball

Here's the .pdf version of their stats.
http://sidearm.sites.s3.amazonaws.com/uicflames.com/documents/2016/11/12/UIC_1617.pdf

#189 DePaul is their best win so far...

Valpo with a 72-58 win. I just can't see UIC keeping up offensively without Dixon.

How long have you been in this conference?  Surely, it's been long enough to know we're not "Illinois-Chicago".

I'll say Valpo by 8.  But this will be the last year you sweep us for a while.  Enjoy it now 😉

Valpo 76
UIC 62

I don't know if anyone else has ever mentioned, but it looks like Jay and KJ Santos played at the same Sunrise Christian Academy in Kansas.

Officially 198 tickets sold through the alumni site.  Weather so far looks very good so expect a pretty good crowd cheering on the Brown and Gold!!

Then what do the I and the C stand for? You sound like that panther guy who hates being called Wisconsin Milwaukee.

I agree, this is the last year UIC could be anyone's whipping boy.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend.   I thought "UIC" was to Illinois Chicago as "Valpo" is to Valparaiso.  Just a user-friendly moniker.  I could have said Chicago Circle Campus but that really would have dated me!

Flames main collegiate home page is UIC.EDU like VALPO.EDU.

on the "About" page on the collegiate website:   first paragraph:

More than a century of discovery and service
The University of Illinois at Chicago traces its origins to several private health colleges that were founded in Chicago during the 19th century
.

so, I'll go with that name for the rematch later in the season.

So does UIC not stand for anything anymore? Do we pronounce it "you-ick"?

Yeah, it does remind me of Jimmy getting enraged every time someone calls the team by the school that contains the team.

This is simply a matter of branding and respect for a fellow conference member.

See page 84 of the HL style guide.  UIC wants to be referred to as "UIC", and "Illinois-Chicago" is an unacceptable reference according to UIC administration.

http://www.horizonleague.org/pdf/2013-14-MBB-Media-Guide.pdf

We're not even technically a hyphen school...we're an "at" school.  Semantics, sure.  But Milwaukee and Green Bay are officially hyphen schools and I see people follow their branding wishes ("Milwaukee" and "Green Bay") more than UIC's are followed.  You don't call UCLA "California-Los Angeles"...you don't call Illinois "Illinois-Urbana-Champaign".

Obviously there are fans at these schools that make a stink about this because there is a stigma associated with hyphenated schools...that we're second class...the branding desires are there for a reason.

I think fans in this conference should know how each team is to be referred to.  That's all.  You would want your wishes followed too.  According to this guide, your admins don't want you referred to as "VU"...would you be annoyed if on selection Sunday you're name appeared in the bracket as VU instead of Valpo or Valparaiso?  Honest question.

As a Chicagoland local and regular listener/watcher/reader of Chicago news and sports, I can attest that the Chicago media refers to the university exclusively as "UIC."  As our family caravan approaches the campus tomorrow afternoon, there will be UIC directional signs plastered everywhere - just like last year, and the year before that. There's nothing new here.

UIC.  Got it.

10-3 is good, but only a start to (at least) 20-3.  We need to come out strong and send a message, with or without Jubril.

Valpo   83
UIC      71

This is similar when morons call USC "Southern Cal", when it should be properly referred to as SC, USC, Troy or Southern California.

UiC is improved and I expected a close Valpo win.

There's a region of the country in which USC means something other than Southern Cal. Much like USF can mean different schools to different areas of the country.

Disagree. Lou Granny Holtz was always anti USC and would intentionally refer to USC as "Southern Cal"

Post by: hailcrusaders on December 30, 2016, 01:23:24 PM
I understand why schools have branding guidelines, but it amuses me when they get a stick in their you-know-wheres about using certain abbreviations. USC could be the University of Southern California or the University of South Carolina. (U)ND around here means Notre Dame, in other places it means North Dakota. USF could be San Francisco or South Florida. CSU could be Chicago State (or Chi State, according to their jerseys. I wonder what their branding guidelines say about calling them that), Cleveland State, Colorado State, or Charleston Southern.

University admins need to realize that people call their school what they do for a reason, and there are more efficient ways of getting publicity than hiring branding committees to come up with silly rules.

An ugly win works fine. Walker was fantastic in the 2nd half, Smits was real good in the first and Peters wound up with great numbers.

I'm biased, despite trying not to be, but did you find McClains antics entertaining or over the top or energizing for his team????

I think Smits read some of our posts from the last game thread. He played with a lot of intensity... except with 2 minutes to go where he had a terrible box out and allowed an offensive rebound off a free throw miss. Other than that, he was pretty good.

YES, the guy who put on the 21 jersey could help a lot.  And Sorolla has that deadly hook so we may still get quality minutes at the 5.

All in all, we survived a cold shooting start and persevered.  Also, Tai Odiase is a scary shot blocker and Alec got a free pair of FTs on one of his blocks.

Never a good thing when you get ready to watch the game start at 7 pm, and you see that it already finished :).  It would have been much worse if there was an L by the score, however.

Similar to what Vashil did, Odiase has made large strides in the last 2 seasons.  He was not good at all when they played us during his FR year, but he held his own last season, as well as apparently in this game.  Imagine if he would have chosen our offer, and how our team would be different than the current group we have.

I agree that it was an ugly win from an offensive standpoint, but our overall defensive performance was stellar. UIC's 59 point night was 10 points fewer than their previous low scoring game of the season, and 15 fewer than their previous low for a home game.

As to their coach, IMO he looked pretty silly prowling the sidelines. That said, if he can resurrect their program and help raise the profile of the HL, he can do cartwheels for all I care.  :)

Lest I forget, the UIC Pavilion is a great place to watch college basketball. Good atmosphere, roomy but not cavernous, nice scoreboard, excellent PA system, good pop music singer performing pre game and halftime, adjacent parking garage, and a stone's throw from 2 express ways. Oh, did I mention how good the concessions were?  ;)

I always enjoyed trips to the Pavillion. My only complaint is that the playing surface is just a little too big for a basketball court, so you feel a bit further from the action. Maybe it's the low angle that the bleachers are at. Nonetheless, UIC tends to sell pretty well for their record. I'm looking forward to seeing what the atmosphere is like when the on-court product improves.

So I made it to the game and really enjoyed the Pavilion.  A very good venue and probably the best in the Horizon.. Some smaller variation would be great for the ARC. I was impressed as were others with Derrik's play and Tevonn was lights out.  Alec clearly had an "off" night with  couple of air balls.  Sti, with the final reults you can see how he is had and shouders better then the horizon typicl players.

After the game  my group made it to a nearby Italian reataurant and had a great mal.  More inteesting to me was the fact that at th nxt table Jabril had dinnr with a arge grou.  My first reaction was "oh no", why would he be here rather then returning to camus with the team/  Kicked off?  Then it occurrrd to me that the tam has a nice break in th chedule and h most likely was given permission to stay in Chicago as it is his home.  Doesn't mak much sense to have him go baack to Valpo and then drive straight back to Chicago.  Hopefully with school starting soon this issue cn b resolved.

I was so impressed by the total turnaround by Derrik and how he made a difference in this game. Great job, Mr Smits!

Alec is going to have off games. When Hammink has one too it really hurts. It was great to see Tavonn and the big men respond enough to pull out the win. The final push by Peters at the end had a great impact on the final score. This team has certainly shown some great versatility to pull out wins in many different circumstances.

Jubril was probably at the game but I don't think he traveled with the team. Did not see him with the team on the bench and I would think because he is suspended from the team is not allowed to travel to away games. The Missouri Sate game was the exception because they had just traveled from Kentucky where he had played. Peters definetly had an off night shooting but other aspects of his game did not suffer. And as far as Coach Lottich and his substitutions I felt he went with the players that were most on their game that night and the switching of Smits and Sorolla kept them fresh against perhaps the best center in the Horizon league this year.

Actually, he was replaced by Max at the 3:34 mark. I don't recall anything going on right then that would have prompted Matt to pull him. That said, this was not one of Lexis' better games. Offensively, he was 0-6 from the field, 0-3 from 3 and 1-2 FT. Defensively, he struggled from time to time to fight through picks. He also was susceptible to getting walled off on screens, and at times was slow to get out on the shooter on kicks-outs off of penetration.  Max had a basket and 2 FT's in that last 3:34, finished with 9 points, and was very physical. Of course, the fact that he's built like an NFL linebacker doesn't hurt any.

Coach Lottich said this was one of their most physical games of the year during the post game.  Max has the physique to handle games like these, thankfully he has come to play this year.

Agreed, Lexus wasn't effective for this type of game.  Good to have a few options depending on type of game.  Coming into this season we weren't sure we even had (1) starting PG up to the task.

Back in the late 80s/early 90s, the Pavillion also hosted UIC Flames hockey. In about 1992, UIC disbanded their hockey team, so the facility does seem huge for basketball purposes, but because of Flames hockey then, and that the Pavillion hoped to host a lot of Chicago area high school and youth hockey games, they never renovated the facility to be a basketball/concert facility.

I was asking about Lexus because we have noticed in a couple games he gets pulled at the end and I was not sure if others thing he struggles....   I also question because I thing he does better at controlling the offense art the end and we have had a couple games where the end of the game we struggle and my wife realized that we have pulled our starting point.   (Even have had Shane and Alec running the point at the end of a couple games - remember Shane's turnovers in a recent game)

Maybe Lexus was not showing but he controls the point better than Shane to end games)

This from BigD (UIC):

"I was at the game. The Valpo fans near me were annoying. I'll never understand going into an opponent's stadium and acting like you own the place. One guy repeatedly screaming for McClain to get off the court and get back in the box...the kid at the end with the yellow wig making the most annoying screech in the world when we shoot FTs...the whining on every call against them. I bought two tickets and the only ones they had were on Valpo's "side". Most fans were fine but you can tell that some of them have been beyond spoiled with success. We're not helping by losing to them for 8 straight f@#!ing years! Btw, $25 per ticket is way too much to charge for a UIC game at this point...the product on the court is not a $25 product. We're supposed to be Chicago's blue collar team but we're charging white collar prices. No wonder the stadium is mostly empty for most games. Even $20 for less popular games is too much."

I, too, was at the game. My family and I paid $200 for tickets, $10 for parking, and $50 worth of concessions. Combined with 500 (minimum) spirited, perfectly behaved, classy, engaging fellow Valpo fans in attendance, Valpo's presence added $15,000 or more to UIC's Athletic Department coffers.

"I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way,"

Bizarre remark to your statement. Don't like opponents in your place then fill the seats with your fans. Don't want to sit with the opponent don't wait til the last minute to buy a ticket. Doubt they return the favor of spending all that money when both their fans travel to Valpo for the return game.

I guess some people just can't handle the truth.   Schedule the code Red and move on.

First off, I paid $15 not $25 and eight of us just moved to empty seats at center court.  Big D certainly could have done the same thing as the place was half empty.

I bought tickets at the window about 20 minutes before game time. There were about 10 people in two lines, and the line moved very slow. The girl working my window said they raise prices by $5 for the Valpo game. They should be thanking Valpo fans.

I sat near some UIC fans. I know exactly who was yelling about McLain. :)

He definitely would not enjoy sitting near me, as some of you would have found out in our game against Maryland a few years back :).  I don't yell any profanities or negative stuff, but I am definitely not one of the Valpo fans that is content to just sit on their hands and politely clap lol.
