Valpo Basketball / Re: Our next head coach

I thought Bryce was building something special. He assembled a solid staff and proved to be a great X's & O's guy since the beginning. His shift in philosophy post Homer was evident from the start, leading a quasi-talented team (compared to now) to back to back Regular season titles.

I am a bit heartbroken (Ok way more than a bit). I really want more details (solid reporting) before I make judgments. On one hand, you could tell after Valpo did not get an at large while having potentially the best team in the History of the program, fear took over. A lot of work went into getting Valpo to this point, but it still was not enough. With obvious obstacles of difficulty of non-conference, and playing in a conference not committed to aggressive schedule practices, there seemed no end in site to the problem he faced. On the other hand, there is still a pretty talented team left if he would have stayed: Jubril, Peters (under an assumption he would return to Bryce), Smits, Bradford, Tavon, Skara, Hammink, and the possibility to fill perceived weaknesses with 3 available roster slots.

Now that Bryce is officially gone, I feel angry. I feel he left at a critical juncture of a Butler like development. Maybe I held him at too high of regard their, but it is impossible to deny the change in culture. Leaving now while leaving 3 scholarships open, while opening the door for players wanting the leave seems like a disrespectful move for a person I believed held his Alma Matter to a higher regard. Additionally, if Roger Powell has been convinced to go along, this hurts Valpo's recruiting to the highest degree, as he opened the door to the Chicago market.

I need facts to deter me from the rollercoaster of emotions I feel at this moment. Until their is some clarity, it is hard not to feel terrified for what is to come.

So my wife mentioned this to me and it is really interesting at least on an Xs and Os end:

What about Billy Donlon? If we can retain Powell, Lottisch for recruiting, Donlon is a damn good coach.

Very interesting idea to entertain.

I would like to see Valpo develop more of a low-post game. I have not liked what I have seen from Carter, but he under stands the 'drive and dish' concept more than dority. At least 4 times in the Detroit game, Dority went to the rack, took a few defenders with him, had a clear pass to Peters and took an ill advised, out of control lay up and thank god got whistles.

Let us hope Detroit is a turn around game. The second half of that game was the first time the team looked like they played with energy in a while.

Valpo Fans,

My last prediction was no where close to correct. I have noticed a steady regression in the last few games, mainly from early season favorite Alec Peters. He does not look confident with anything he is doing on the court. Besides the second half of UIC, I have been surprisingly unimpressed with Keith Carter.

The inner-Cub fan wants to say this season can still be turned around, but the facts are showing a different story.

I was very irritated, but having a hard time not feeling the same way, by a fan sitting behind me at the Wright State game. He kept repeating "I'm not gonna come to watch this crap anymore." I understand a winning team draws fans, but it was hard to listen to him be so negative. What happened to loyalty in sports?

Positive outlook prediction: VU 74 UDM 66

Turnover Plauged Actuallity: UDM 78 VU 65

I am getting back to the ARC with my wife for the first time since North Park. I am optimistic this game will be well attended.

I understand the love for High School basketball, but it continues to confuse me that the public chooses to attend those games over D-I athletics. Keith Carter alone is worth the price of admission. I am very excited to see him live.

The word "ESPN" will draw the student section. When I was a student, it was often frustrating finding a seat for these games. As a regular (missed 4 home games in 4 years) many 'fair weather' and 'Look I am on TV' fans really dominate the front sections.

With Griffin and Yoho out, and Pacher Questionable, it may be a short bench for the Raiders. For a team that only scores 69.1 points a game, losing your 3rd leading scorer (Yoho) is big in some views statistically, but this is a team structure around everyone scoring. If Pacher is out, this changes the game entirely. The question of the game will be how Valpo will respond to the physicality of their conference leading defense. Valpo handled a tougher defense opponent well (SLU). As usual, if Valpo can keep turnovers down, we will see an impressive team on the court. Hopefully today is the day we see a complete game (Solid 1st and 2nd halves).

Prediction: Valpo 78 - WSU 64

Seats for the Game: Chairback G, Row K, Seat 5 and 6
