Title: 2023 Baseball
Post by: VUFN2020 on February 27, 2023, 02:26:27 PM
Playing young last two years starting to show dividends.    This entire squad basically has 2 full years experience.       Confidence showing thru first two weekends.     It is early, butcCurrently Valpo #1 in both Pitching and Hitting in the Valley. Crushed UTM who split with Belmont and beat Murray this year.    No reason to think this team won't be highly competitive when conference play starts.     Keep rolling Beacons!

It's surprising to see the bats so alive this early in the season.  It usually takes cold weather teams 10+ games to get their feet under them, since they are mainly hitting indoors for several months prior to the start of the season.

Don't look now but maybe, just maybe, our baseball team is coming into adulthood!  Just beat Arkansas Little Rock 7-6  with 4 runs in the ninth!  Go Beacons!

REALITY GUT CHECK:  2-12 mid-week smack-down at #22 Mississippi State.  It was midweek and the reported attendance was.... get this...... 9,486 !!  :o   Three game set with MSU this weekend. Hope we can take at least one.

Sure, baseball lost to Miss State during a mid-week game.  I guess that's a reality check.  But given what VU has done in the first ten games, I think there is reason to smile. I think the Men's basketball team would take a 6-4 record against similar competition, wouldn't they?  Here's hoping that VU baseball gives us a little something to cheer about this spring.

Crafty, you are right, so I modified my post a bit. Three more with MSU. Let's see what we're made of.

Wow!  Great win at #22 Southern Miss!  When was the last time any Valpo team beat a ranked opponent?  Maybe a few years back? In any event Valpo took on their All American pitcher and got 2 in the first, then made him go over 100 pitches by the fifth inning. Then their reliever came in who hadn't given up a hit all season only to have him give up a grand slam!  Great pitching from Valpo in the 6-1 win!  Looking very good!

Great win when this university needed a big win so badly!!!!

It was Brady Renfro, Valpo first baseman, with the grand slam in the 7th inning.

Guess we got a quick answer. 5,200 in attendance on a Friday night. When have our guys played in front of such crowds?  Wednesday's game had over 9k.

We lost against a nationally ranked squad, but what a fight. Our guys are legit.

Valpo Baseball last won against a ranked team 4-5 years ago, and we beat #1 Notre Dame during my time on the team in the 2000-2001 season.  We've had 5-6 wins against ranked teams since that ND win.

Relative to where we have been the team's performance has been very good. There is much reason for optimism throughout the athletic department. I think we may finally be finding our way in the MVC. It understandably took an adjustment period but we will soon show that we were a solid add for the league across the board. I am optimistic.

Does that qualify baseball for getting it's own sub forum (is that correct?) or does it go by the number of posts for baseball threads?

Jake Miller plays with Lakeland in the Tigers' system. 2022: 0-3 with an 8.59 ERA; 2023: 1-1 with a 14.40 ERA.

On May 10 Jake Miller took the loss against the Bradenton Marauders 16-3 but on May 17 Jake Miller won his first game of the season over the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels 7-1. Probably had a bad performance that inflated his ERA on the 10th but did much better on the 17th allowing only 1 run.

May 10, 5:30 PM   @ Bradenton Marauders   L 3-16   Carlos Lomeli   Jake Miller (winning pitcher, losing pitcher)

May 17, 5:30 PM   vs. Fort Myers Mighty Mussels   W 7-1   Jake Miller   Develson Aria (winning pitcher, losing pitcher)

Colin Fields signed with Detroit last summer and has been assigned to the Florida Complex League Tigers.  I believe the FCL starts play on 5 June.

Unfortunately, Valpo drops a 10-9 game to Belmont to end their season as well as end all Valpo athletic event till the fall.  An improved baseball team hit with lots of key injuries and lack of pitching. Still, their entire starting lineup will be back if, and its a big if, Ryan Maka isn't drafted.  The kid is the real deal.

Maka will not be drafted this year - he's only a sophomore and you have to finish your junior year to be eligible.

Indiana State has become a legit program over the last few years.  Missouri State is usually up there, as well, but didn't have their same success this season.  DBU is now in Conference USA for Baseball, otherwise there would have been another top team in the MVC.

Yes, ORU was consistently ranked in the top 25 when I was playing.  Congrats to them, even though I still hate them :).

Take note, decision makers for the Valpo HoF, in my yearly suggestion of our former Mid-Con Pitcher of the Year and 2x First Team All Mid-Con, in a conference that was dominated each year by ORU ;).

Good player, but didn't have the same season this year as he did in his amazing RS FR campaign.  Hopefully he elevates and goes somewhere in his baseball career, as you don't go to Southern Miss for the academics.

Southern Mississippi University

Founded on March 30, 1910, the university is a dual campus institution, with its main campus located in Hattiesburg and its other large campus – Gulf Park – located in Long Beach. It has five additional teaching and research sites, including the John C. Stennis Space Center and the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL).

It does have one of only 5 space center research centers in the country.
