Yeah, I don't know why I ratcheted it up from 50 (to 70 and finally to 75), but I guess I figured he'd be playing twice as many minutes, and maybe taking twice as many threes, and he took 17 last year, which, up a factor of four...
...wait a second, why am I giving my thought process away? Cheffers, you'd know better than I for sure; however 75 is pretty much just 2 a game. I guess we'll have to see whether the talk is talk or walk.

Why would LaVonte improve this much? He was 2 for 4 against Robert Morris.
Sample size of 4 < last year's sample size of 75 (62-of-75, 82.7%)
1) Keith Carter: 5.0 apg UNDER
Not a single player in the Horizon had over 5 assists per game. Even McCallum had 4.46, and he never came out of the game.
2) Jordan Coleman: 9.5 ppg UNDER
I expect him to have as many ppg as Bogan did last year. That ended up being 6.35.
3) LaVonte Dority: 80% FTs OVER
He was 83% last year and 10-10 at USF.
4) Bobby Capobianco: 75 3PT att UNDER
This is more than Boggs and Dority attempted last year. But I do think it could be pretty high given the playing time he's going to get.
5) Moussa Gueye: 2.0 bpg UNDER
Valpo didn't have a single guy over 1 bpg, only 56 players in entire NCAA had over 2 bpg. Eargle the only player in Horizon last year. Not even 7'1" Brown did it. Considering Gueye may split time with Vashil and be off the court when Valpo goes small (Capo in), I don't even know if he'll average more than 1 block per game. Just harder to average over 2 than you think it is.
6) Clay Yeo: 20 mpg UNDER
This is a toss up and I keep changing my mind. Clay might be the first one off the bench and he'll get a lot more playing time with Carter gone. I think Dority will fill more of a SG role when Carter is eligible which will cut Yeo's minutes in half. I think the team will share a lot of minutes early in the year before finding a consistent lineup. But who knows, maybe Coleman struggles so much that he is starting by the end of the year.
7) Vashil Fernandez: 6.5 rpg WAY UNDER
Broekhoff didn't even have that many and he lead the league in RPG. Vashil isn't even a starter.
8) Lexus Williams: 0.8 spg UNDER
Backup point guard who might be 3rd point guard in limited minutes by the end of the year... Dority had .7 last year as a comparison.
9) Nick Davidson: redshirt? yes or no YES
Considering he only had a couple of minutes in non D1 games, I hope so. Unless he doesn't really expect to get any minutes later in his Valpo career either.
10) Jubril Adekoya: 22 games played OVER
Even Vashil played in 27 games last year. Bryce likes to use his bench, even if it's for brief minutes.
11) Alec Peters: 45% FG% UNDER
Broekhoff shot 44.8% and I see Peters taking a lot of 3s, which will drive his average down. This should be close though.
12) David Chadwick: 35% 3FG% UNDER
This is kind of a weird stat, since he'll take around 10 all year (hopefully that's it). Career is 22.2%. I don't know how much PT Chadwick is actually going to get, but the low sample size could cause this to go either way.
13) Team: 20 wins UNDER
Does this include the 4 non D1 games? The OOC schedule is pretty tough, but the conference is bad enough where Valpo could finish with 10 or 11 wins. I'm expecting a .500 season.
14) Tie-breaker--team points per game, to 3 sig figs 69.0010098583

Duke Mondy, Oakland, 5.1 (not in the HL last year, but this one). And can we really say that McCallum was looking to pass first?
Quote from: a3uge on November 05, 2013, 02:30:18 PMThis is more than Boggs and Dority attempted last year.
true...but Dority attempted 74...so...pret-ty close. it is a little high. i think i just did it to tease the #No3sBobby crowd.

nothing about your first sentence is accurate. Broekhoff averaged 7.3, and he didn't lead the league. Seven others did 6.5 or better.
Quote from: a3uge on November 05, 2013, 02:30:18 PMI don't even know if he'll average more than 1 block per game.
since he did 1.4 last year...in the SEC...in just 15 minutes a game...I think he'll be ok. Of course it will be close. 1.4 in 15.4 is 2 bpg in 22 mpg. Which sounds about right.
As I pointed out earlier, it'll be interesting simply because 2 bpg for 34 games would make him the single-season leader (Grafs' soph with 67) AND 2 bpg for 36 games would put him in the top 10...for career.

You're right about rebounding one - I must have been looking at defensive rebounds per game (http://statsheet.com/mcb/players/stats/rebounds_avg?season=2012-2013&conf=horizon (http://statsheet.com/mcb/players/stats/rebounds_avg?season=2012-2013&conf=horizon)). Still, I don't think Vashil will have over 6.5 because of minutes, position, and ability.
I stand by assists... McCallum was 2nd in league with 4.455. Buggs was 8th in the league at 3.676. Oakland shoots every 3 seconds so higher totals make sense. Valpo doesn't run this offense.
The Capo 3's one... It's not as off as people seem to be making it out to be. Cory Johnson (inexplicably) shot 86 in the 2010-2011 season.
Gueye having 1.4 blocks per game in limited minutes is impressive. Not sure how many mpg he'll get (guessing around 19 or 20), but 2 bpg is still quite a bit.
Phew! I'm glad we're friends again.
Now let's get back to agreeing on everything.

I agree with assists - getting 5 apg is not an easy thing in college basketball, especially for a non-running team that has many guards. If I was expecting Carter to get 30 min/game, and the ball went through him every possession, I might go over.
If Capo can show that he can hit the three, he has a chance to get to that number of attempts. I don't see it based on his numbers from last year. Would love to see him setting high picks near the FT line, then step out to hit the 3!
For Gueye, I'm hoping that his SEC and defensive experience might surprise a few teams in the first half of the season, getting him opportunities to get to (and over) the 2.0 bpg.

Just because this Valpo team plays up and down the court more than other Valpo teams does not mean Carter will get the difficult to attain 5 assists per game.
I just thought covufan should know this wasn't the slow deliberate team Valpo has experienced in the past. Anybody else who has seen this Valpo team play agree with the observation that they play a lot faster than previous Valpo teams?

I would agree with that statement. They are definitely more guard oriented than last year and all the guards are significant scoring threats whenever they have the ball. Last year we were a three-point shooting team, this year we can score from anywhere on the court. This year most of our scoring will come the 1, 2, & 3. While last year it was the 4 & 5.
It will definitely be a fun team to watch and a very uptempo offensive style. Will be fun to watch the games against Oakland and Detroit, two teams known for having an uptempo offense.
But back to the Carter issue, even with an uptempo offense 5 assists a game is a tall order for anybody to obtain. Anybody know does he look to pass or shoot first? That will be a big role in if he is able to achieve 5 assists a game.

From Keith's interview with the athletic dept:"I'm like a pass-first point guard. I like to get everyone involved. I'll score if we need it but more importantly I like to get my team involved."

just for the record, we've 15 participants in our inaugural O/U.
Here's how we look so far...
1) Carter N/A
2) Coleman OVER
3) Dority UNDER WHAT THE HECK MAN
4) Capo OVER I TOLD YOU TO TAKE THE OVER
5) Gueye RIGHT AT IT in 13 minutes no less
6) Yeo OVER
7) Fernandez OVER
8) Williams OVER
9) Davidson no sightings yet
10) Adekoya OVER
11) Peters OVER (45.4!)
12) Chadwick N/A
13) Team OVER
Interesting facts: the most closely split (7 to 8) categories? Coleman, Williams, Peters.
The most one-sided? Capo and Vashil (1 to 14 in favor of UNDER). Just curious...how'd that go tonight? ;)
oh, and the leader after lap 1 of 36ish, SIR TALKSALOT and it's not even close. :)

Oh Geez, now the pressure is on...
1. I'm liking KC at 5apg
2. Depending on the 8-9 man rotation as to whether JC can get over 9.5 ppg
3. LVD should be over 80%... even tho I said under
4. "No More3s" will not get to 75 if he wants any playing time
5. MG right on the number at 2bpg, Vashil will be getting more PT
6. CY... probably the odd-man-out in minutes
7. Feeling good about Vashil at 6.5rpg
8. LW should be OK at about 1 spg
9. We are over the 25% magic number... so not feeling the red shirt
10. Jubril... the other pleasant surprise
11. Alec.... THE pleasant surprise... 45% is a baseline, not a target
12. Chadwick...sorry Dave... 11th man in a 10 man rotation
13. Team: Ending December at 10-5 (even 9-6) leaving 16+tournament to play... 20 appears to be a LOCK.
14. liking the juggernaut we have now...Not sure anyone can keep this team under 60 ppg, and another NAIA on the schedule to pad the stats helps.
and I added band membership ... they've been doing really well with their numbers.
Wish I would've seen this thread when it started.
I'm reserving judgment on this team until we play at Oakland.

Also helps when games are scheduled on weekends. Last year first semester games were:
Fri, Tues, Wed
This year first semester:
Fri, Sun, Sat, Sat

yeah, where were you?
Current status mid-game (borrrrrrrrrring unless you're Nick Davidson's mom):
PACE (calculated for 32 games we're guaranteed...)
Carter 5.0 apg A (I'll score it as "under" for right now though)
Coleman 9.5 ppg O (not looking as slam-dunk as it was earlier)
Dority 80% FTs O (told you he'd be back)
Capobianco 75 3PT att U (on pace for 55)
Gueye 2.0 bpg O (easily. on pace for 72, which would be the VU season record and leave him TIED FOR 10 ALL TIME)
Yeo 20 mpg U (Early prospects were looking better than now--around 17)
Fernandez 6.5 rpg U (probably there to stay--around 5 rpg)
Williams 0.8 spg O (just needs 7 more to make this a lock)
Davidson redshirt N (welp)
Adekoya 22 gp O (over probably)
Peters 45% FG% O (shooting over 50, so yeah)
Chadwick 35% 3FG% O (3 for 6)
Team 20 wins U (on STATISTICAL pace for 19.7, actually. probably over though given the HL. but i deal in numbers.)
Tppg 82.3 (worth noting that the highest guess was NOT EVEN within TEN ppg of our actual total...)

Those who can: DO
Those who can't do: COACH
Those who can't coach: OFFICIATE
Those who can't officiate: ANNOUNCE
Those who can't announce: POST TO CHAT BOARDS AND MAKE WEIRD GUESSES ON WHAT THE OVER-UNDER WILL BE.
Galatians 5:7 You did run well; who did hinder you ...
Speaking of Announcing...
WVUR is looking for baseball announcers... and at the YSU game and next Saturday... anyone (not just students) is invited to sit in a Mock Game broadcast (on the track behind section G), and announce part of the men's basketball game... if they like your presentation, you might get the chance to announce a baseball game on 'VUR this spring.
PGMADO helped set that up. Too bad I'm a little busy at the game or I'd try out! If nothing else, you get a shot at mimicking "chef" !
I would be terrible at announcing baseball. Too much frustration in my voice with pitchers throwing balls, fielders making errors, or batters striking out :)

And here we are! Everyone's entry (highlighted means correct).
First column is what the O/U was set at. Second column is what it actually was, and the third column what the right answer would have been.
The last two columns are how many took "over" and how many "under". Below you see we batted .538 as a team.
Dave_2010 gets the closest to the pin award for the tiebreaker, team ppg, btw.
But the GOLD award goes to our new champion, covufan!
The BROWN award for LAST PLACE goes to Kyle321n, but don't worry, man, we won't tell the people at the mid-majority blog-type thing about this. Probably.

(I took two that day as souvenirs when Karl Berner and I were jumping around and hollering.) PM me with your address and I'll get it mailed off.
--So I bought the Carter hype. I figure I was just a year early. Most of you did not (10/15).
--I thought the Coleman number was interesting and you split almost down the middle (7 to 8). He started in double-digits for the first six weeks or so...too bad things went south, both springs, for him. I hope he can look back on his time here and be happy though.
--Despite the fact that Dority was an excellent FT shooter, most of you (9/15) thought he wouldn't keep cracking 80%. Shame on you--especially wh, who, if he'd gotten this one right, would have tied for champion (but check his TB score). ;)
--Obviously I bought the "Capo's shooting 3s" too, and only 1 of you agreed (thanks, historyman). And though he started out on fire, it tapered. (I don't think he'd've gotten off 20 in the Columbia game, though.)
--Gueye, the best single-season block party in school history--enough said.
--Yeo...well, that didn't turn out the way 9/15 of us thought. In November it looked like a safe bet...then he cracked 20 just twice more the rest of the way (on a team that had 9 crack 15 mpg, he wasn't among them). Safe to say that won't be the case next year.
--Fernandez...see what I put for Capo (thanks, sir talksalot). Obviously he'll better that next year. ...um, as long as he doesn't get in (cue voice) FOUL TROUBLE!
--Lexus! His number here, like his game, a pleasant surprise. He actually clinched the over 2/15 vs. Milwaukee.
--Davidson redshirt...one of two that we got most often wrong (10/15). And, to be honest, I don't know that we should have. He played all of 67 minutes, just 28 of which came after the point in the year where if he'd been shut down with what hockey would call "um...a lower-body injury" he could appeal for a redshirt. And as always, with the redshirt, the equation is always "18 year old self" < "23 year old self".
--Adekoya was more than Adekuate, playing more than the 2/3 of games. (Davidson and Chadwick were the only two who didn't make this cutoff).
--Peters...his number was up and down around the 45% line--but finally finished over. So over, in fact, that he shot 49% from the floor, which is a great number even if it's only 6th on the team (everyone ahead of him is taller than he). (EDIT: so up and down in fact that I forgot to change it back!)
--Chadwick...well, what can I say. We hardly knew ye. Hope he gets healthy, whatever he does.
--The team. (the team, the team...) This would be the OTHER one that we got most often wrong. And that's all I have to say about that, to paraphrase a certain someone. sigh.mp4
Congrats all and thanks for playing--it'll be even better next year--just like our boys.
I'd like to enter a protest on covufan's behalf ... it looks like he got the Peters FG% correct, didn't he? Unless I'm confused (very possible), it looks like that whole row is reversed.
Egads, you're right.
Thanks for noticing.
I LOST ON MISSING THE SMALL SAMPLE SIZED DAVID CHADWICK 3PT %? UGHS!
Quote from: a3uge on November 05, 2013, 02:30:18 PM
12) David Chadwick: 35% 3FG% UNDER
This is kind of a weird stat, since he'll take around 10 all year (hopefully that's it). Career is 22.2%. I don't know how much PT Chadwick is actually going to get, but the low sample size could cause this to go either way.
13) Team: 20 wins UNDER
Does this include the 4 non D1 games? The OOC schedule is pretty tough, but the conference is bad enough where Valpo could finish with 10 or 11 wins. I'm expecting a .500 season.
He took 10 all year! And they finished .500! Doesn't that count for something!??
actually, dude, and it hurts to deny my alter ego, but with the recount you were even farther from the top.

Team points per game. So you (69.2) were further away from the truth (71.7) than valpofan11 (72.3) but closer than a3uge (69), pgmado (67.4) and swift mutiny (66.2).

You should predict Valpo to finish last with 0 players making the first two teams.
Basically by getting 6 of 13 I could have done just as well flipping a coin. That's my take on this thread. I really don't remember why I made the choices I did back in November.
