General VU Discussion / Re: Enrollment numbers
January 24, 2024, 05:59:49 PM
I am happy to announce that VU is hitting Concordia Lutheran High School a lot harder than they have in the past. I will give the majority of the credit to Marin Jacobson, the new Director of the Bach Institute and also the Phyllis and Richard Duesenberg Chair in Lutheran Music. I will let her describe what she is doing here in Fort Wayne:

"I, too, am very excited to bring VU musicians to St. Paul's in March. Last month, I met the music teachers at CLHS (Jennifer Porath and Kathryn Peperkorn) to discuss their students' participation; the advanced choir will be singing with the VU Chorale at St. Paul's on Friday, March 8 at 7:00 PM. The concert will be free and open to the public.

As the planning continues, I am quite excited to bring many Lutherans together for this worshipful event. The musicians will be sharing anthems, leading everyone in singing hymns, and performing a Bach cantata. The theme is: Soli Deo Gloria: a celebration of Lutheran song, and the 'solas' are present through the program. It will be an evening to remember, and our Lord will be lifted high!"

Marin has also been to the Seminary Campus talking to our Kantor and some of the staff. She was a great ambassador and well received by a pretty tough (for the most part a not pro VU) crowd.

She has done more in Fort Wayne in the last 4 months than was done during the entire Heckler Presidency.

Wishing all the forum posters and VU faithful a blessed and merry Christmas. This has been a rough time for me and it makes me realize how much all the connections I've made mean to me. Thank you.

Maximus Nelson is doing pretty well at 11-2 Purdue Fort Wayne. Playing about 19 minutes a game, 8 ppg, and shooting 46% from 3.

QuoteIt's slightly dodgy. Though it takes a bit of extra effort, when I opt for the newest to show on top and periodically refresh, it works fine for me.

This is the best way I have found. Not great, just OK.

I watched the match and the one thing that really stood out to me was the physical difference between the two teams. ND players for the most part were physically larger and in some cases faster than our team. Our girls played their guts out and did a great job of sticking to form on defense. I think that ND got frustrated with their lack of production in the first half. Our girls really represented VU well, let's hope they get a recruiting bump from their performance over the last two years!

Tonight we play IUPUI, old foe (who can forget the Ron Hunter games) now fallen on fairly hard times. What other Indiana and "local" D1 programs will VU try to schedule in the future. I ask this mainly for my friend Jon Coffman, Head Coach of Purdue Fort Wayne, who would love to get back on the schedule much like they were under Homer and Bryce. That may not happen after they went to Depaul this week and beat them on their home court. Will we ever play Notre Dame again, or will Digger's statement ring true forever? Matt was pretty consistent in playing Ball State. Will they return to the schedule? What schools would you like to see? Butler... probably not happening.

Thought it might be interesting for people to see a report from our Auditor, a company that specializes in the education segment, on "Higher Education Trends." The effect to us as a seminary is not as immediate as with some of the universities like Valpo, but will effect us down the road as fewer students come to the sem directly out of college. Really hammers home that the threat is real.       https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/r5u26ehi51jo8lxcc1kux/20231108HigherEducationTrends.pdf?rlkey=lda8xaa3i7h9b6wm7hzu6msuz&dl=0

If I remember correctly, Javon still had a relationship with the former coaching staff and was welcomed back occasionally. If we can use that to our advantage in any way, I have no problem with supporting him.

President Padilla is making good on his promise to me about reaching out to Concordia Lutheran High School. Surprisingly they are also reaching out to the seminary here in Fort Wayne. About three weeks ago the new holder of the Phyllis and Richard Duesenberg Chair in Lutheran Music and director of the Bach Institute, Marin Jacobson, visited me on the CTSFW campus and I introduced her to our Kantor and other VU Alums on staff. She also met with other LCMS music people in the area. She was well received and is making plans to do some things here in the Spring.

Some really big officiating mistakes in this game. Valpo should have won 21-20 as the officials completely blew the call when Valpo returned the Drake fumbled kick off for a touchdown. One of the worst calls I've seen in a long time.

Said this in another thread but it seems imprudent to launch a bricks-and-mortar campaign with one, count 'em, ONE fundraiser on the payroll.
Obviously you are trying to stir the pot with a statement that on its face seems ridiculous. Did the entire advancement department quit? Seemed pretty well staffed when I was there earlier this summer.

Yes, let's hope.

I think the top development guy from Valpo went to Bradley in the last year.  Can't remember his name.  Out of the fiscal frying pan and into the fire.

Q&A: Sitting down with new VP of Advancement Jason Petrovich
BY JONATHAN MICHEL – CO-EDITOR-IN-CHIEF ON JANUARY 27, 2023

"JP: So the campaign that we recently finished at Valparaiso from start to finish, I was a part of it [and] I was the main driver of it. We raised a little over 302 million dollars for [Valparaiso]. So that team made its largest campaign in the history of the university. We recently set a goal of $250 million so we eclipsed our goal by over 20 percent and that feels really good. What feels really good about it though is, in 2012 when I first got to Valparaiso, we were just kind of talking about what really needed to happen for the campaign to be successful. We were strategic and found the people and it felt like at times we were building the plane while we were flying it but it all worked. I'm proud to leave [Valparaiso] in a state that's better than what I found it in and I have the same hope and aspiration for my time at Bradley."

https://www.bradleyscout.com/news/qa-sitting-down-with-new-vp-of-advancement-jason-petrovich/

Impressive.
Wow!! Talk about being a little verbose, saying that you were the main driver of the campaign. I think he was in charge of major gifts but he wasn't the VP of Advancement. The VP was Lisa Hollander, I wonder how she feels about him taking the credit for the 302 million.

Let me fix this for you -
Quote from: historyman on July 20, 2023, 02:08:43 AMI know a medical student that grew up in Valparaiso who attended Liberty's medical school. He said there are good doctors there who are dedicated to teaching medicine but as for the university he couldn't get away from it fast enough because they don't teach reality. They make up things much like all the biased liberal and conservative media. This is just me reporting the facts that this student, now doing his internship in the real world, reported to me.

Videos like this are very hard to glean information from. I will say it is pretty impressive and not nearly as raw as I maybe would have expected. l would expect him to have great potential. However, it is not hard to be impressive with absolutely no resistance or defense. All of that training was for someone playing the 4 with no back to the basket drills (which are generally missing from today's player workouts. Think Kevin van Wijk.). Would have been a lot more informative if the coach applied some minimal interference so he would have had to make some forced direction and dribble movements so we could get a better idea of his left hand skills. Would love to see what he is doing on the court today. Excited to see the current product!

FRESHMAN YEAR: University of Southern Indiana scored a season-high 31 points versus Lindenwood University, the 31 points was a Screaming Eagles Arena record. https://usiscreamingeagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/isaiah-stafford/7040
HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered in basketball at Crispus Attucks High School (Indianapolis, Indiana) and Bolingbrook High School (Bolingbrook, Illinois)...was the Indianapolis City Player of the Year after posting 18.4 points, 4.5 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per contest in 2020-21 at Crispus Attucks...shot 51 percent from the field and 81 percent from the free-throw line in 2020-21...played his first three high school seasons at Bolingbrook, prior to COVID-19...was named Academic All-State twice during his prep career at BHS.

If I had to guess why he transferred from USI, it was because of very strange and inconsistent playing time. He only shot the 3 at a 32% clip at USI. His almost 46% 3 point percentage at John A. Logan is crazy. Shot 32-54 from 3 during conference play, that is 51.5%!! Seems really strange that he would improve that much. Hope he can shoot it closer to that 46% at VU.

If he can shoot in the upper 30's that would be my expectation. I hope he proves me wrong and continues to shoot in the 40's.

Who actually owns the university and who would receive its sale proceeds?  Just saying out loud the implication WH is raising.
I imagine that it is a very similar arrangement as to what transpired when the Lutheran Hospital here in Fort Wayne was sold, since many of the same people/congregations were involved with setting up the Lutheran University Association. When the hospital was sold the money in essence went back to the founders forming a foundation which is controlled by area congregations. https://thelutheranfoundation.org/about-us/our-history

Quote from: 78crusader on May 01, 2023, 12:13:46 PMIt would be another 10 years for the library to come on line and 6 more years after that for the new union to open its doors. Think about what a tough decision that had to be for President Harre and the BOD.

Many have donated to VU over the years. 78crusader's post got me thinking about the Moellering family, whom I know, and the large donation they gave in 1956. Here is what O.P. said about their gift.
QuoteThe finest gift has come from Mrs. Henry F. Moellering of Fort Wayne, Indiana, who gave us $375,000 for the building of the Henry F. Moellering Memorial Library. I must say that this particular gift was the most moving and inspiring in our entire Lutheran history. The Moellering family has always been very close to the University, and this expression of confidence in our future meant even more to us than the intrinsic value of the gift and its importance for our academic development.
Moellering Library was less than 50 years old when it was razed. I will have to ask Michael how he felt when the building named after his Grandfather was bulldozed.
