This is going to be a tough game. Granted that Loyola is not the Loyola of old but, Chicago State lost by 9 at the Gentile.  They are battle tested and we aren't.  Let's hope for a big crowd.  I hate to say it but, Chicago State 72, Valpo 68.

The attached article includes comments from Rep. Erin Houchin, R IN-9th, and somehow she drags Valpo into the discussion because of the Confucius Institute which was closed in 2022.  Weird.

Well that was disappointing. Clearly Jerome is bringing nothing we need.  Afraid to shoot and is getting out muscled time and time again.  My guess is we will see a lot more of Sepp  in the future.  We just won't win any games shooting 12% from the 3.

Until we can get more depth, this is going to be a long season, and we expected this, unfortunately.

finally won a game-albeit an exhibition(shows in the win column which is weird) but...looks to be a long year for the ladies

OMG, that was really hard to watch.  What has happened to players and their inability to shoot free throws? Valpo was 10 for30!!! and IUNW was 9 for 15.  We are going to get killed in The Valley.

The latest poll has Valpo ranked #19!  This proves conclusively that coaching is over rated as the team heads to a Las Vegas tournament without a coach!  I suppose that Dr. Small will send some sort of representative to chaperone!

So now we are turning to  a walk-on to shake things up?  Wow!  That  looked like a Lottich coached team till late in the second half. Turnovers, sloppy passes and rebounding? What's a rebound?  Man, we have a lot of stuff to work on.

We currently have 12 scholarship players and three walk-ons. Teams are allowed 13 full scholarships.

I certainly don't have an opinion of the consultants chosen one way or another.  The proposed ideas, including talking to other similar institutions about how they have faced their challenges, assumes we have a President and Board who, as suggested by the analysis of the backgrounds of some of the consultant's principals, don't have any managerial experience, let alone in higher education.  Without digging too deep into the Board members experiences, let me just post part of President Padilla's bio:

President Padilla joined Valpo as the culmination of a long and successful career in higher education. He served as vice president, university counsel, and secretary of the University of Colorado System. Previously he served 15 years in senior leadership roles at DePaul University in Chicago, the most recent as vice president, general counsel, and secretary.

So a guy with this background wouldn't think to check around with the loads of people he knows and respects but rather, in some sort of panic mode, goes directly to a consulting firm who will rip Valpo off and provide cookie cutter answers?  I think not.

And we fold our tent and lose 3-0.  Something was lacking in this team makeup.  They were up 17-12 in the first and lost.  There was no "killer" instinct.

Hopefully our new players will change that.

Quote from: valpo22 on November 30, 2023, 05:50:15 AMI am leaving at the end of the year for a better job.

I'm sure you will be much happier and perhaps the University will be better off with a faculty member proud to be part of a prestigious institution like Valpo.

vu72 - cannot agree with your assessment on Palm at the same level as Brodie, who was dominant last night. Drake is what we expected them to be.

I don't remember saying he was on the same level, which he clearly isn't.  What I said (or meant to say) was that Jerome has improved significantly over last year--or at least is being used in a more effective way this year.  The team needs to continue to grow but will also struggle because of lack of depth, and youth. Roger said in the presser that Manyang will be out for a while as he is just now starting to run.  Conner also will not be available as he is once again dealing with injuries.

Wonder how much NIL money he is getting? Good for him.

A business prof at Valpo told me $140,000.

Quote from: valpopal on November 29, 2023, 11:26:13 AMThis notion that "art is not associated with the university mission" is countered by the very history of Valparaiso University. Numerous presidents of the university have praised art as a core resource in the education of students. You can look up the words and actions, including budgetary, of Kretzmann, Huegli, Schnabel, Harre, and Heckler, among others. Only Pres. Padilla has thought otherwise

The Brauer Museum boasts a collection of more than 5,000 works of art from the mid-19th century to the present. Also included are world religious art and Midwestern regional art. The collection comprises paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, and photographs.

Somehow the sale of three pieces out of over 5000, will somehow make "art as a core resource in the education of students", reduced to an unrecognizable shadow of its former status on campus.

Brodie has really improved his game. I wish Valpo could a dude like that

Well, I think we have one. Jerome Palm has clearly improved his game and I expect him to have an impact tonight.  He is averaging 7 ppg and 6.5 boards in 20.6 minutes this season, versus 1.9 ppg and 4.0 boards in 13.5 minutes last year.  Lottich had guys in the wrong spots a lot last year.  I just think Jerome is being used more effectively this season.

After the first half against Illinois, I'm really looking forward to watching this team grow.  This is a good game for us.

My guess is that we won't know more about Manyang and Barrett when they show up ready to play.  Is there an injury reason that Scroggins didn't play ahead of Sciarroni last night?

Valpo  78
W Ill    68

We pull out of our shooting slump.  DeAveiro needs to find his offensive rhythm, as we can't have our MVC opponents playing 5 on 4 defense.

I think the staff thinks Scroggins will be a star and will red shirt him this year.
#66
Agree the offense was anemic at best...but, remember a couple of things that might bode better for the future. The two deeps on the offensive line included three true freshman, two red shirt freshman, one red shirt sophomore, one red shirt junior and...ONE senior who could come back for a fifth year.  Add to that that we we finished the season starting out third string quarterback and I would say there is some hope for the future.

So once again Valpo loses at home by 22 to a team picked something like 10th in the Ohio Valley I think. Coach Evans tells us we have lots of talent and needs to "tighten up" a few areas before the next game.  Tighten up?  We lost by 22!

We, once again, are playing a five out scheme with a lack of height.  We get outrebounded and if the 3's aren't falling we get smacked.  If Evans is around next year I'll be shocked.

10-10 3 minutes left in the 3rd!  We've only allowed 39 yards rushing so far!
#69
Sure, I'm always looking for a bright spot and I think I've found it!  Last night we only had seven turnovers against the #23 team in the nation. Against Green Bay we only had five!  Compared to last year's final game against Murray State where we had 19!!!!!

Taking care of the ball will lead to wins.  Clearly the coaching change has already had a big impact.

A lot of folks lost a lot of money tonight. Go Beacons!

I'm glad the games are starting at 7 (or later!)  Weren't they starting at 6 last season?  6 seems kinda goofy it you think about getting home from work, eating dinner and getting you, your spouse and two kids in the car to arrive at 6.  Am I right on that?

Valpo Football / Re: Game #10 - (1-5) Stetson
November 11, 2023, 03:25:53 PM
We are pretty bad.  It's that simple.  Stetson starts out running something like 16 straight plays for -3 yards all because of our turnovers.  We need to go to OT because of a missed extra point!  The season needs to be over and hopefully it won't end on an embarrassing blowout at St. Thomas.

Having complained about the football performance I do want to applaud the broadcast team.  It is as good as any college student run broadcast I have seen. Things like play clock showing, down and yards to go shown on the field, great camera work and replays, and colorized red one,  just first class!  Thank you!

A great game pretty much all around.  I had posted an article, some time ago, that included Jahari Williamson as one of the top 10 shooters in Canada, regardless of class.  That showed tonight.  True, the opponent was not up to the task, but still a really fun game to watch.  Love the student section and band!!!!
