Don't know if this is new or an update, but Alec is wiki-ized.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alec_Peters_(basketball)
That surely means that Alec has arrived and is now a seriously famous person.
I know the NBA looks for something more, but I have never seen a gamer or kid that transcended his abilities like Alec. Plus he has such an NBA release it is sick. He stuck balls with guys in his face, adjusted his release and made buckets happen...why? Because he's that good. He definitely needs to work on his defensive footwork to be NBA caliber but his offensive game is phenomenal. We are lucky to have him because we are going to kill it this year...and next...and next....and next and the years after that. Valpo basketball aint leaving any time soon.
Valpo apparently has been playing AP out of position the whole time. Who knew? http://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/article/2016-08-27/college-basketball-all-shooting-team-top-shooters-each?cid=ncaammsocial_fb_sf34522601

I agree but we need to remember the in the moment thinking that led to this mistake. First we were always in the at-large picture and trying very hard to avoid unnecessary upset. Second we held on to the hope that the right wrist and back problems that followed EVN might disappear and allow him to return to acceptable point guard form. We lost on both these gambles which left neither Shane, Max or Lexus adequately prepared for the challenge.

Alec Peters, Valparaiso
Compares to: Kelly Olynyk, Boston Celtics
Arguably the top mid-major player in college basketball in 2015-16 and one who surprisingly opted to stay in college rather than turn pro after his junior season, Alec Peters is exactly the kind of power forward the NBA is looking for. The fact the NBA will have to wait for him another year was partly its doing, he's said.
"Be a guy at a mid-major school next year that's dominating at my level" is what Peters was told by scouts, according to College Basketball Talk's Rob Dauster.
He's done this already, but it never hurts to have another year of doing so. The 6'9" forward was nearly unstoppable last season regardless of what he was doing, averaging 18.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game while shooting 50.5 percent overall and 44 percent from three-point range.
His ability to stretch the floor with perimeter shooting but not be a liability on the interior is what will get him a shot at a long pro career. Peters is already ahead of what Kelly Olynyk did while at Gonzaga, where he was primarily a post player. But since turning pro, he's developed an outside shot that's added to his value.

But I guess all things being equal it's better to be talked about than not.
Is Alec a key to a successful season? Sure, but our other 9 scholarship players will also need to contribute at near their full potential. We have so very little room for either injury or underperformance!
I have always enjoyed the underdog role so if we are clicking in March this year could be a lot of fun. I am fully prepared for some big disappointments along the way!

We will have plenty of experience in the main group as I'm expecting to start a R-Jr, a Jr., and three Srs. It is the backups where challenges may occur as I pencil in 3 fr. a Jr. and a Sr. in the next group. If we end up with Fr.or two in the starting group then we will be much deeper (more talented).

Thanks WH. He's in good company. There is only one other mid-major -- Nigel Williams-Goss from Gonzaga by way of Washington. And here is what they wrote in the article for Alec.
Alec Peters, Valparaiso: Peters is the best player at the mid-major level in the country, a kid that graduated from school in three years and had the chance to leave for literally any other program in the country. He didn't. He opted to stay at Valpo, where he'll be the centerpiece of new head coach Matt Lottich's offense. It's not crazy to think he could average 23 points.
Funny, it would seem that NBCSports does not consider Gonzaga a mid-major otherwise Wiiliams-Goss would have been 3rd team and Alec 2nd team
Gonzaga plays in a mid-major conference, but their record this century has been above the level of a mid-major.

Ranking the Biggest Matchup Problems in College Basketball
#1of 15. Alec Peters, Valparaiso Crusaders
Find a way to shut down Alec Peters and you'll be setting a new standard, since it hasn't happened in quite some time.
The 6'8" forward has dominated the mid-major ranks for three seasons, taking it to another level in 2015-16 when he averaged 18.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game while shooting 50.5 percent overall and 44 percent from three-point range. He went through the NBA draft process but withdrew to return to Valparaiso for his senior year despite being able to transfer somewhere more high profile as a grad student.
Primarily a jump shooter earlier in his career, Peters now goes inside to post up more often and can also blow by most defenders. His ability to hit from the perimeter causes teams to pull a big man away from the paint to guard him, thus opening the door for a drive to the basket.
Peters had at least three offensive rebounds in 16 of 37 games last season, and in eight of those games he also hit at least five threes. There's no spot on the court where he isn't able to do damage.

Peters Earns Spot on Karl Malone Award Watch List
Thursday, October 20, 2016
"For the second consecutive season, Valparaiso University senior Alec Peters (Washington, Ill./Washington) has been named to the 20-player preseason watch list for the Karl Malone Award, as announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Thursday. In its third year, the award recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men's college basketball.
The Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year and recipient of numerous preseason All-American honors entering his senior season, Peters enters his final season looking to cap an already remarkable career. He was named an AP Honorable Mention All-American as a junior, averaging 18.4 points and 8.5 rebounds per game as the Crusaders advanced to the NIT championship game. Peters ended the campaign second in a single season in program history in scoring and fifth in rebounding, and enters his final year at Valpo fourth on the Crusader career charts in scoring and seventh in rebounding – on pace to break the program's career marks in both categories.
By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2017 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award will be narrowed to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Mr. Malone and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The winner of the 2017 Karl Malone Award will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards in Los Angeles, CA on Friday, April 7, 2017. Broadcast information will be released at a later date. Previous winners of the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award include Georges Niang, Iowa State (2016) and Montrezl Harrell, Louisville (2015).
Peters is one of just three players on the preseason watch list from outside the Power Five conferences, and is the only representative outside of the Power Five conferences, the Big East and the American Athletic Conference."

NBA Draft Profile: Alec Peters has the shooting touch to warrant a look at the next level
Examining the Valparaiso standout's NBA chances.
by Chris Schutte@ChrisSchutte3 Nov 16, 2016, 8:09am PST
For those who primarily watch the NBA, Alec Peters may not be a familiar name. But for those who keep up with the college game, Peters is as much a part of the mid-major landscape as anyone. The senior has been the cornerstone for a Valparaiso program that has become one of the better mid-majors during his time on campus. During his career, Peters has averaged 16.8 points per game on 49/43/82 shooting splits, and pulls down nearly seven rebounds per game. This year, Peters already has scoring outbursts of 23 and 36 points in Valpo's first two games.
It wasn't a given that Peters would spend his senior season at Valparaiso, or even in college basketball at all. Peters declared for the 2016 NBA Draft, went through the evaluation process, but was able to return to school due to the NBA's new early entry rule. There was speculation that Peters would follow Bryce Drew to Vanderbilt, but ultimately he opted to return to the Crusaders for one last ride.
Currently, Peters is projected to be an early second-round pick in next year's draft by DraftExpress. He's rated as the No. 6 prospect in the senior class, but will have to overcome the notion that younger players are more valuable assets to NBA front offices. Nonetheless, Peters will have his entire senior year to prove to GMs that he's worth a look.
StrengthsIf there's one thing that Peters does better than anything else, it's shoot. With the NBA becoming an increasingly perimeter-oriented game, being able to score from the outside is a necessity. Peters is a career 42.6 percent shooter from three-point range, and is doing so on over five attempts per game.
Peters projects as a stretch four in the pros, but doesn't have the typical size or athleticism that other NBA power forwards have. Peters makes up for this lack of athleticism by having a quick release that he can get off from anywhere on the floor. He thrives in pick-and-pop situations, and makes defenders pay when they don't close out fast enough.
He's also able to utilize a solid face-up game when working out of the post. At only 6'8 and 225 pounds, Peters isn't able to physically overpower opposing bigs. He relies on his quick release and shooting off the catch to combat longer or more athletic defenders.
Also, as is the case with any senior, Peters has an elite feel for the game. It's cliche, but Peters truly has an understanding of how to make an impact. He picks his spots effectively, and is a solid team defender despite his physical limitations. In the NBA, there's value in just knowing how to play, and Peters provides that.
WeaknessesPeters' biggest weakness has been made clear at this point: he lacks elite athleticism for an NBA forward. He's been able to overcome that against the competition in the Horizon League, but he will have to find ways to compensate for that lack of explosiveness at the next level.
This could become a particular problem on defense. If he's matched up against power forwards, they will likely punish him on the glass and around the hoop. If he gets matched up against small forwards on the wing, they will blow past him, or knock down open shots if he leaves too much space. Also, Peters has been a solid rebounder at the college level, but the size and athleticism of an NBA frontcourt will be tough to overcome.
One way that NBA defenses can defend Peters is with a hard close out, making him put the ball on the deck. Peters is skilled for a forward, but can struggle at times making plays and shots off the bounce. He will need to make defenses pay for running him off the three point line.
ProjectionOverall, Peters can make a good case for being worthy of a draft selection. In the NBA, unless you're a superstar, it's better to have an elite skill rather than a bunch of average ones. Peters provides that with his shooting. As teams continue to construct rosters that are perimeter oriented, Peters can fill the role of a stretch four off the bench. If Peters continues to showcase his all-around offensive skill-set this season, it's likely that an NBA team will select him in the early-to-mid second round of the draft next summer.
Nice compliment posted on Twitter by UK Coach Caligari about AP. Hope we can hang around with them unlike most opponents they are beating handily.
Calipari on Valpo & Alec Peters down the road: "You need to come to the game to watch this kid, he's that good."
Some guy on NBA Draft Xpress did an excellent video analysis on Peters from the Oregon game. No audio, the analysis was in text captions. Pointed out his strengths and his weaknesses with an eye toward the next level.
Anyone else think that the extra muscle that Peters put on this past summer is influencing his long-range shooting? It doesn't look as fluid as it was the last 3 seasons, almost like he is still adjusting to being more tight in his upper body. I am sure that he will figure it out, but it just doesn't look the same, regardless of whether he makes them or not. His FG% is down because he is working on fade-away shots and his mid-range game, per the NBA scout recommendations, so I don't really have a worry on that side. He is just starting to shoot those types of shots in live action games, so it will get better as the season progresses.
I'm a little concerned by the analysis that puts so much of his draft stock on 3P%.
But, he's finding a way to get itiw n at the college level, in spades.
Before yesterday's game he was #5 nationally in PPG.
Has substantially more attempts than anybody else in the top 50 in FT%.
Maybe tops in FTM?
Top 50 nationally in rebounding.
His shooting form is not as smooth as Tex mentioned. Could be that he's playing more minutes or he feels more pressure to perform. I know he has been sick for the last couple games, but one difference besides the shooting form is his emotion. Last year he seemed more vocal and looked like he had more fun.

I tend to toward 1) internal pressure he is putting on himself so that he may be rushing his shot by maybe just a micro-second but enough to throw off the accuracy a bit, and 2) he's being mobbed in every game and has defenders on him all over the court. No body is going to sit back in a zone against us with his 3 pt threat. I haven't checked the numbers, but it does seem like he's on the court much more than last year too.

To update these after yesterday's game, and with a little sounder fact checking.
From ESPN.
Alec's currently 4th nationally in PPG at 25.1. (UIC's Dixson is at 25.2. Wright State's Alstork is at 22.9 good for 18th.)
Alec's 59th at 9.1 RPG (or we can cheat and take him to 23rd at overall rebounds, but many have played fewer games).
Alec's fallen to 30th at 93.5% FT's. And actually Alstork is ahead of him for FTM, Alec's second in the nation at 58 to Alstork's 61 (also in seven games). Dixson, currently 4th with 52 makes, should be right up there once he plays his 7th game.
As a team we're 9th in FT% at 81.0% (And 7th in FTM, 13th in FTA. We sit at 13th, tied with BYU, in FTM per game. Way down at T44 in FTA per game attempting 26.3 and making 21.3. Wright State's 7th at 30.1 but only makes 22.7.) It helps, of course, that Alec takes a third of ours. But as a team we've done very well, probably historically well so far?
We have a different thread for polls and such. But, let me slip in here that we were "Almost famous" for Seth Davis on this week's AP ballot. It seems sure that he'll vote for us if we beat Rhode Island. And I'm sure he's not the only one.
Rhode Island rises to #21 in the AP poll this week (the coaches' poll isn't out yet).
We need to remember that Alec is playing a slightly different roll this year...much more inside play. He has been fouled much more often so far this year. In fact, of BSU's first 6 fouls in the 1st half last Sunday, AP was the one getting fouled. His Dad told me Alec is starting to adjust better and better to increased inside play and is feeling stronger after his recent illness. His Dad felt he is not yet at 100 %. I'm sure his outside shot will come around anytime now. When that happens, look out!
I know a lot of us are concerned about Alec's 3 point shooting woes. I am, I know that. I decided to take a 5 game rolling average of his 3 point shooting. After the Oregon game, Alec hit his career low since January of 2014. In fact he hasn't been below 30% for a 5 game stretch since his freshman year.
Here's a graph for you all to take a gander at.
Now back in January of 2014 it was widely believed that Alec was starting to tire a little from the riggers of a freshman season where he was playing 25-30 minutes a game. We also saw teams starting to focus on him and LeVonte Dority stepped up and carried the load for a few games.
I don't want to try to jump into Alec's mind or be an arm chair psychologist. There's been a few threes that have been the in and out type, and really we could see the 3 point line jump up to 50% for the next 10 games. I know we need Alec to shoot hit usual 50-40-85 if we're want to have a chance to advance in the NCAAs.
Patience, gentlemen, patience...we know that sooner or later he will snap out of it, maybe tonight.

Presumably, everyone knows by now that AP was named HL POW for the 2nd consecutive week, but I don't see it documented. So, for the record...
http://www.horizonleague.org/blog/horizon-league-mens-basketball-player-of-the-week-dec-5
Through Missouri State, AP with 1,935 points.
He started the season with 1,682. Having scored 253 points in 10 games... he needs 207 in the next twenty games to tie Mr. Drew at 2,142.
He needs 65 for the 2K mark... at 23 ppg, he's on target to do that against Chicago State.
==========================================================
Through Missouri State, AP with 796 rebounds
He started the season with 702, having picked up 92 in 10 games, he passed Oppland the other day to move into 4th place.
He needs 114 to tie Chris Ensminger for the school record. Raitis Grafs and some guy named Broeckhoff are tied with 841 in the #2 slot.
==========================================================
Through Missouri State, AP had played in 114 games at VU (started all of them)
We have a minimum of 21 games left (including 1 game in the HL tournament)
Broeckhoff is 2nd in team history with 134 games played. Eric Buggs played in 138.... so AP Game #135 is game one in HL; Game #136 is game 2 in HL and Game #137 would be the HL championship game. #138>?
Alec is a real pleasure to watch play. And he is a class act, both on and off the court, including the classroom. I love to see him take charge and takeover a game like he did last night. It looks like he is back! Come to th;ink of it, was he ever gone? With numbers like +25ppg and +9 rpg it's hard to believe he was "gone".

I think you hit the nail on the head. "Take over a game" is exactly what Bryce could do and I don't remember another who could do it, at least when it come to leading a team to victory, not just scoring points. I guess Brandon Wood would fall into this category but the teams he played on didn't necessarily win. Alec is the real deal and in my mind the best to ever lace them up for Valpo.

Good call on Wood. He was explosive ... I remember him dropping 30 at UNC. I think he is underappreciated because he chose to leave Valpo for MSU. Still don't understand why he didn't get a shot in the NBA when guys like McCallum, Mack, Cole and Felder did.

I actually think his decision to leave valpo hurt him in getting to the nba.... He was going to need to be a star at msu to make the nba. Would have looked better to have amazing numbers and be a leader at valpo his senior year. Just my opinion.

He was kind of old too since he was a transfer and a 5th year senior at Michigan State. Not sure if his only chance was to tear it up at Valpo or tear it up at Michigan State. Nonetheless, decreasing his minutes and shots didn't help him in the long run.
He did take over games though. Of course Broekhoff did occasionally too.

Where are we, 22 more games guaranteed? And we hope for 26 or more?
1935 points so far, at 25.3 PPG he'd be at 2492 or 2593.
For rebounds, ESPN actually has him starting the season at 704, so with 796 now. At 9.2 RPG he'd be at 998 or 1035.
So, school records are likely. In the Horizon League, he's not so likely to take the top spot from Loyola's Alfredrick Hughes, 2914 points from 1981-1985, but he might manage third or even second all-time.
Did I hear that Alec's second in Division 1, overall, among active players for career scoring?

Yep. Since 2014 Alec is the 4th highest scorer (http://cbbref.com/tiny/FrJIn) in all of college basketball. Damon Lynn of NJIT is 27 points ahead of Alec.

Fun stuff.
And Alec's got 3.3 senior PPG on him, having taken a bigger step in his senior year. Just based on that, Alec would be on schedule to pass him in mid-January. But, Alec's actually got a game in hand! Lynn's already played 11!
But there is some other competition.
Looking back a decade or so.. McDermott scored 3150! Only two players in that time period have cracked 3,000. But Alec's got a shot at finishing in the top 20.

QuoteIn a draft that is about as weak as we can recall among NCAA seniors, Peters has a great chance to be the first four-year collegiate player off the board.
Fascinating. And, indeed, glancing at one Mock Draft the first round is dominated by freshmen. I see only two seniors: from Clemson and Notre Dame. That particular Mock Draft projects four ahead of Alec in the second round, including Oregon's Boucher.
SI has Alec at #27out of the top 30 in their most recent (12/15) mock draft.

Eighth of his career. Passing Norris Cole. Ties him for fourth-most all-time, with players from Butler, Xavier, and Loyola.
One more to tie Kay Felder. Keifer Sykes seems to have the overall record with thirteen.
But, there are a bunch of errors in this part of the HL record book (including leaving out recognition for Ryan Broekhoff as a four-time single season winner). So, hard to say. I'm pretty sure of Peters', Sykes', and Felder's counts.
Not sure if anyone saw this but when Alec went home for Christmas he went back to his High School Gym in Washington, Illinois and was at the gym at 6:30am working out and getting shots in on Christmas Eve morning.
The kids work ethic and maturity is well beyond his years. If (I'm fairly optimistic I can say 'When') Alec gets Drafted, I'm going to buy his jersey. It's rare you find athletes like Alec who are going to go Pro but also have the character he has.

Halfway through the season, here are the top 25 mid-major players in college basketball
We ranked your favorite player too low
by Austin Brown@AustinOBrown Jan 10, 2017, 6:45am PST
We are officially at (or past? I'm not sure) the halfway point of the 2016-17 college basketball season. So far we've seen upsets, buzzer-beaters and some outstanding individual performances. Now that we have roughly a 15-game sample size on every player, we decided to rank the top 25 mid-major players in the country.
While I know this list will not upset anybody and I won't get any angry tweets about how I ranked your team's player too low, feel free to make your voice heard in the comments section anyway. As a reminder, this site considers a mid-major to be any team outside the power-five, American or Big East. If you want to debate that, don't. Just live with it. Without further ado, here is the list.
The Top 10
1. Alec Peters | Valparaiso | Senior | Forward
After shocking the college basketball world by opting to return to Valpo for his senior season, Peters has averaged 24.7 ppg and 10.4 rpg. He is largely responsible for the Crusaders' 12-4 start.
2. Jock Landale | Saint Mary's | Junior | Center
The best name in college basketball has increased his scoring average by almost 10 points from a season ago. Landale's breakout season is one of the main reasons the Gaels are currently sitting at No. 19 in the AP poll, following their 14-1 start.
3. Jack Gibbs | Davidson | Senior | Guard
Gibbs's numbers are down a bit from last season, but he is still capable of going off on any given night, as he did in his 30-point outing in the Wildcats' near-upset against North Carolina.
4. Charles Cooke | Dayton | Senior | Guard
Cooke has put up another stellar season despite nagging back pain that kept him out of Dayton's last game against St. Bonaventure. His 18.7 ppg and 2.4 apg are both career highs. He has the Flyers in the driver's seat for another A-10 title as they have won 10 of their last 11 games.
5. Cameron Oliver | Nevada | Sophomore | Forward
Oliver is one of the most complete players in the country. He is currently averaging 14.9 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 3.1 bpg, and 2.1 apg. His stellar play may propel the Wolf Pack to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2007.
6. Jaylen Adams | St. Bonaventure | Junior | Guard
Adams is about as consistent as they come in college basketball. He has scored at least 20 points in 10 of the Bonnies' first 15 games, and he has only tallied fewer than five assists three times this season.
7. Marcus Keene | Central Michigan | Junior | Guard
The Youngstown State transfer is leading the nation in scoring with a monstrous 29 ppg. He also chips in 5.3 apg, and his most impressive stat may be his 4.7 rpg despite being just 5'9.
8. Nigel Williams-Goss | Gonzaga | Junior | Guard
Williams-Goss has led the Bulldogs to a 15-0 start and the No. 5 ranking in the AP poll in his first season in Spokane after transferring from Washington. He has much better talent around him than most of the guys on this list, so his stats are a bit deflated as a result. Despite that, he is still averaging 15.3 ppg, 6.1 rpg and 4.8 apg through the first 14 games.
9. Mike Daum | South Dakota State | Sophomore | Forward
Daum has been the one bright spot on an otherwise lackluster team. He has eclipsed 30 points four times this season, including a 39-point performance in the Jackrabbits' overtime win over Murray State.
10. Kevin Hervey | UT-Arlington | Junior | Forward
After missing most of last season with a torn ACL, Hervey has looked as impressive as ever through 16 games this season. He has six double-doubles so far, and the Mavericks appear to be the front-runners in the Sun Belt.
The rest of the list
11. Eric Mika | BYU | Sophomore | Forward
12. T.J. Cline | Richmond | Senior | Forward
13. Przemek Karnowski | Gonzaga | Senior | Center
14. Tyler Cavanaugh | George Washington | Senior | Forward
15. Markis McDuffie | Wichita State | Sophomore | Forward
16. Dallas Moore | North Florida | Senior | Guard
17. Giddy Potts | Middle Tennessee | Junior | Guard
18. E.C. Matthews | Rhode Island | Junior | Guard
19. Chandler Hutchinson | Boise State | Junior | Guard
20. Rashawn Thomas | Texas A&M-Corpus Christie | Senior | Forward
21. JeQuan Lewis | VCU | Senior | Guard
22. Scoochie Smith | Dayton | Senior | Guard
23. Jordan Matthews | Gonzaga | Senior | Guard
24. Darral Willis | Wichita State | Junior | Forward
25. Jaaron Simmons | Ohio | Junior | Guard

From today's Chicago Tribune 1/11 as agibson mentioned. Good pub for AP and finally a little Chicago media coverage about Valpo MBB.

I frankly am astounded at the amount of press Alec/Valpo are receiving this year. I NEVER have heard/read the name Valpo/Valparaiso so often and it all has to do with Alec. Witness: On the way home tonight I was listening to ESPN radio (national) and the female announcer said something to the effect of: "So football season is over so now we need to start watching the names for The Wooden Award, the top college basketball player in the nation. One player to watch is Valparaiso's Alec Peters who is averaging 25 and 10."
How cool is THAT!!!!! Go Valpo!!! Go Alec!!! :thewave:

Is my math right that he is 56 points and 44 rebounds away from the records?! He could very well knock those both out vs UIC next weekend! Certainly during the next home stand. 💪🏀

POINTS:

Ensminger 910 Alec 895 Needs: 15

Ed Eckhart 452 Alec 432 Needs: 20

Alfredrick Hughes Loyola 1981-85 2,914
Byron Larkin Xavier 1984-88 2,696

Rashad Phillips Detroit 1997-01 2,319
Alec Peters Valparaiso 2013-NOW 2,116 (Needs 203 to move higher than 5th)
Cedrick Banks UIC (2097) and Keifer Sikes (2096) were both jumped at Cleveland State
Here's some screenshots from the top players on KenPom.com. Earlier this year Alec cracked their top 10 Player of the Year standings, and I'm thinking with another stretch of 25 and 10s he could be right back in there.
Tim Kempton.... His Dad was from the bruiser school of Centers. Played at ND in the mid-80s.
Will Alec break Bryce's record tonight?
So Alec has broken the Field Goals Made Record and the Rebound record. He's 7 points shy of breaking the scoring record. What other records should we start watching to fall?
1. Games Played: Erik Buggs (2008-13) - 138
Alec Peters - 124
There's 12 games remaining, not including the Horizon League Tournament. So Alec has 137 games minimally. Win one HL tournament game, get one post season game and Alec has broken the record.
2. Free Throws Made: Ed Eckart (1953-57) - 452
Alec Peters - 433
Alec is averaging 6.6 FTM per game. That's 3 more games that he should break the record.
3. Single Season Points: 1. Bruce Lindner (1969-70) - 725
Alec Peters - 454
Alec is averaging 23.8 ppg. He needs 22.6 ppg to get to 725 in the games guaranteed (not including HL tournament games). He's on pace for 740 this season. This should be attainable, but it will probably happen in the HL Tourney.
4. Free Throw Percentage: 1. Casey Schmidt (1993-94) - 92.6%
2. Dick Jones (1966-67) - 89.7%
Casey Schmidt (1992-93) - 89.7%
Alec Peters - 90.0%
It's certainly possible. I feel like it'd be hard for him to fall out of the top 10 (Lance Barker (1994-95) - 87.8%)
5. Career FT Percentage: 1. Chuck Kriston 1960-63 86.5%
Dick Jones 1965-68 86.5%
3. Bruce Lindner 1967-70 85.2%
5. Lavonte Dority 2012-14 83.8%
6. Bryce Drew 1994-98 83.4%
Alec Peters - 84.6%
If Alec keeps shooting at his current rate he'll end up at 85.4%. He's got a shot at the career record. If he hits the next 24 FTs he'll be in 3rd (he's done it already this season). If he shoots 96% over his next 100 FTs he'll be tied with Chuck and Dick.
6. Rebounds per game: 1. Joel Oberman (1971-75) - 9.9
7. Ken Rakow (1964-67) - 7.7
9. Ed Eckart (1953-57) - 6.8
Alec Peters - 7.3
If Alec continues his pace he will finish his career with 7.6 RPG. He'd be really close to moving into 7th place, but he's entrenched himself in the top 10.
He'll end up in the top 10 in nearly every scoring category and rebounding category. Pretty easy to say he's the best Valpo has seen.
I just saw this article about Alec from a few days ago. Great article on why he stayed at Valpo and touches on the great character of Alec.

Loyalty drives Washington grad Alec Peters' success at Valparaiso
By Eli Hershkovichfor the Journal Star Posted Jan 5, 2017 at 2:31 PM
CHICAGO - For Valparaiso forward Alec Peters, retaining faith in those around him stems from numerous moments around a basketball court. Just ask his father.
Several years ago while suiting up for Washington as a prep player, Peters lost one of his eye contacts in a game. Despite having poor vision without it, he continued to play. Following that occurrence, his dad advised him to carry an extra pair.
"My dad got pretty mad at me that I didn't (carry an extra set then)," Peters said.
Fast-forward to the Crusaders' recent game against University of Illinois-Chicago, where Peters exhibited his strong conditioning, logging 38 of 40 minutes. Yet, he needed to depart for a bit due to a familiar maintenance issue. Early in the first half, one of Peters' contacts popped out for the first time since the aforementioned high school game, causing him to dash over to the locker room and nab his extra set.
That same virtue guided him to remain at Valparaiso after former Crusaders coach Bryce Drew left the school for Vanderbilt last April.
Drew not only coached Valpo for five seasons, averaging 25 wins per campaign, but he had played for the university as well. Hence, when the two discussed Peters' collegiate future last summer, Peters said, Drew never brought up the notion of using the NCAA's graduate transfer rule to follow the coach to Vanderbilt. Given their close relationship, he took notice.
"I like to stay loyal to the people who've stayed loyal to me, especially the seniors that I've played four years with," Peters said. "It'd be hard to play anywhere else."
Moreover, Austin Peters, Alec's brother and current graduate manager for Valpo men's basketball, linked Alec's decision to his desire to stay in another tight-knit community. Like the compact town that is Washington, with 15,000 residents, Valparaiso enrolls a relatively small number of students: 4,439.
"We can't go out to eat without people stopping and wanting to talk with him, but it's people we grew up with," Austin said. "The family environment in Valparaiso is pretty similar."
First-year Valpo head coach Matt Lottich, who arrived as an assistant coach the same year that Peters came along, sees evident growth in the 6-foot-9, 235-pounder senior's skill set.
In the first half against UIC, Peters generated two dunks in less than a minute. The first came off a steal, breaking away for a one-handed slam. Lottich says he wouldn't have expected that from Peters last season.
"Alec worked harder in the weight room this summer than anyone I've ever seen," Lottich said. "His body and athleticism have transformed."
Additionally, Peters has enjoyed a boost in production as a result of his determination to improve. Thus far, he's averaging a double-double, with 25.0 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. His scoring output, which is up about seven points from last season, ranks second in the Division I nationally behind Marcus Keene of Central Michigan.
Peters also recently joined Drew as the only players in Valpo history to score at least 2,000 points.
Overall, Peters says his biggest achievement offensively revolves around the 15- to 17-foot mark on the court. From this position, he sees the floor better, subsequently taking a mid-range jumper or finding an open teammate. In order to get to that spot, though, he's constantly training with assistant coach Jackie Manuel to enhance his footwork.
"I come to the gym early to work on it (footwork), and even during practice, I'm staying conscious of where my feet are," Peters said.
In spite of Alec's continual effort to reach the NBA, Austin said his younger brother doesn't hesitate to assist his teammates in practice when a teachable moment presents itself. Evidently, his belief in others just won't stop.
"There's not much that I say that Alec doesn't know beforehand," Lottich said. "He's a coach on the floor."
Alec has the chance to become the all-time leading Point Scorer * in the Horizon League Conference's modern history*
He's currently second behind Rashad Phillips (1998-2001) Detroit.
2319 - 2136 = 183 points to tie record / 12 games left = 15.25 point per game average needed for the rest of the season.
Alec's current point per game average: 23.9
Alec's conference point per game avg: 20.3

110. Gordon Hayward 992 09'-10' Butler (probably the greatest player to ever come out of the Horizon)

I don't believe Sports Reference goes all the way back to the 80's. There are 3 players ahead of Phillips according to the Horizon League's record book on their website, two of whom Alec has no chance of catching.
Sorry... Rashad Phillips is actually in 4th place... The guy in first place has like 2900 points...
Alfredrick "the Great" Hughes, Loyola, mid-80s. He could light up the scorebook. 2914 in the old Midwestern Cities Conference/Midwestern Collegiate Conference (MCC), predecessor to Horizon. That was a fun, fun conference in those days -- Dayton, SLU, Butler, Evansville, Detroit, Loyola, DePaul? and Xavier and maybe Marquette (around the time I'm most familiar with it). We used to go see that tourney regularly in Dayton.

During Alfredrick's era, the MCC was Loyola, Detroit, Xavier, Butler, Evansville, St. Louis, ORU and Oklahoma City. I'm his age, so saw him play quite a bit. Loyola's 1985 team was really good, losing to Ewing's Georgetown team in the Sweet 16 after leading at half. Here are the Top 10 all-time (not including Alec). Lots of guys from the '80's, including Keith Gailes from Michigan City who scored over 2,000 in just 3 seasons.
Would love if those teams were a current conference. OKC University is NAIA now so that wouldn't work.
Byron Larkin is Barry Larkin's brother. Byron was part of the X teams that put them on the map. Great guy too. He was on the #13 team coached by Pete Gillen that upset Missouri at the Hoosier Dome in 1987 in Rd 1 and lost to Duke in Rd 2 by 5. That was an afternoon game before the evening HoosierFest with Alford, Knight and the rest of the Nat'l Champ team before the next stop at Cincinnati and the famous Dale Brown quote and slamming of the phone.

Alec Peters set to break Valparaiso scoring record

If 50 points, 26 rebounds, two school career records, two victories by the largest margins in the HL this season do not get AP the HL POW; tomorrow we leave the Horizon League.
...and, he delivered his 30-and-10 while playing only 23 minutes. For the technicians at the HL office who might miss the significance, that a per-40 pace of 52-and-17!!
...and, he picked up his 12th and 13th double-doubles for the season!

Osipoff is reporting he got the award. 4th of the season.
It's a strange stat, but that pulls him into a third place tie with Felder for "most in career", at nine.
Two more two tie Sykes for "most ever" career, and maybe three to tie the "most in a season" award. (Of course there were seasons with a lot of prolific scorers competing or with Norris Cole and Gordon Hayward both getting weekly awards, etc.)

===============================================================
INDIANAPOLIS – Valparaiso's Alec Peters led all league players in points and rebounds last week and has been named Horizon League Player of the Week for the fourth time this season. The senior also became the school's all-time leading scorer during his 30-point, 10-rebound outing against UIC after becoming the program's all-time leading rebounder against Green Bay. Milwaukee's Bryce Nze has been named Freshman of the Week after converting 19-of-24 field goals and posting offensive ratings (KenPom) of 137 and 136 against UIC and Cleveland State.
Player of the Week | Alec Peters | Valparaiso | Sr. | F | Washington, Ill.
Peters broke a pair of Valpo career records last week and averaged 25 points and 13 rebounds per game in leading the Crusaders to the two largest margins of victory in Horizon League play to date this season.
Peters opened the week with 20 points and a career-high 16 rebounds in Valpo's 24-point win over then-undefeated Green Bay - with his final rebound against the Phoenix, he set Valpo's career rebounding record with his 911th career board. Peters followed with 30 points and 10 rebounds in just 23 minutes of action in a 31-point win over UIC, breaking Bryce Drew's career scoring record at Valpo of 2,142 points with his seventh point of the game.
This is Peters' fourth player of the week award this season and the ninth of his career. The nine career honors ties him with Oakland's Kay Felder for the third-most weekly awards in league history.
Alec Peters on this watch list.
19 college hoop stars on our @TheBigOTrophy midseason watch list; 12 frosh on Tisdale Award list. https://t.co/PWeFdz2Vfb https://t.co/MWq27clFk1
Per Post Trib article by Michael Osipoff about Alec breaking career points scored record, Bryce Drew quoted with some nice thoughts IMO.
"He's definitely deserving. He's a great player and an even better person. He's what Valpo athletics and college athletics are supposed to be about."
Oh, for our UIC fans who once in awhile comment on this board. EVERY newspaper or Internet article I've read about the game refers to UIC as Illinois-Chicago, not the preferred UIC. National or local publications, including the page 6 in the sports section game summary in the Chicago Tribune.
A lot of schools like UIC try to get the media to just use initials. I remember once upon a time when Missouri-Kansas City was in the Mid-Con, they sent out a press release saying they only wanted to be known as UMKC.
Their rationale? "Well, the national media always uses UCLA. We just want to be known as UMKC."
Probably the same thinking going on at UIC.
Problem is, you can't make sports editors follow that request. If they think the readers need to see the full school name on first reference, that's what is going to happen. Be thankful for any coverage you get.

The perimeter percentages are down this year, but so are the attempts. We attempt the fewest 3-point shots in the HL, yet here we are at 18-4 (8-1). A big part of that is that, even as low as our perimeter percentages are, we allow our opponents an even lower percentage. Would better shooting help put us over the top? I'd say so. Is it killing us? Not so much. As for Alec, is his decreased perimeter performance related to his increased aggressiveness in the post and has it more than been made up for in increased 2-pointers, free throws, and rebounds? You betcha.

For those who did not see Chris Ensminger play, he was a double-double machine his Jr and Sr year. He was another big man project coming to VU out of Cincy area. He grew rapidly between JR and Sr year HS and was a good 6'11 when he went to VU. He was about 190 his frosh year but built up to 250-260 JR year. He was a true post. Not necessarily quick up and down the floor but had great footwork and a soft touch around the basket and always positioned well for rebounding. With Bryce on the outside and Chris on the inside, it caused the Mid-Con lots of problems. And, he is one of the nicest people you'll meet. He played in Germany for nearly 20 years, perennial all-star and now coaches in the Bundesliga. BBall was in the family too as we should have tried to get his brother, Mike, who played and started for Charlie Coles' (God bless his soul) Miami of Ohio team. Mike was a power 6'7" 250 forward who set mean picks and was tough as nails.

Maybe ML could get Chris to show Sorolla how to do this.
I think our bigs, especially Sorolla do a nice job boxing their guy out and keeping them from grabbing the offensive boards. Just because they aren't getting the rebounds doesn't mean they aren't doing their job properly.

Sunday I remember well one massive box out from Sorolla where the ball may even have bounced on the court. That got a _little_ dicey as he was a touch slow to react and grab the ball. But, he definitely held his guy back.

On Sunday, and other games, I have seen him boxed out time after time, with no aggressive moves to get the defensive RB. When VU is on offense, he is often out of position to get a possible RB.
Is that because he was setting a high ball screen? Rolling to the hoop? Cleared out to make space for Alec?
Vashil averaged 1.4 rebounds as a freshman or sophomore or whatever his first year was, then 5, 5 and 7. Let the kids learn!

Career over, but Damon Lynn's legacy will last at NJIT
The senior guard, who shattered records and transformed a program, has undergone surgery for a ruptured Achilles.
One of the great success stories in the history of New Jersey college basketball has come to a premature end, although its legacy will continue.
NJIT senior Damon Lynn, who defied the odds and rose from unrecruited to virtually unstoppable as a mid-major guard, lifting the Highlanders from obscurity in the process, has undergone surgery for a ruptured Achilles tendon.
"He was a once-in-a-generation player," NJIT coach Brian Kennedy told Gannett New Jersey Monday night in a text-message exchange. "He's been the face of the athletic department the last four years and was a huge part of us getting into the Atlantic Sun conference. His competitive will to succeed on the ultimate stage was a joy to watch, and his scoring accolades second to none."
The Union Catholic High School grad scored 2,153 collegiate points, smashing the program record. He made 434 3-pointers, which ends up fifth in NCAA history behind Oakland's Travis Bader (504), Duke's J.J. Redick (457), Chicago State's David Holston (450) and Saint Peter's Keydren Clark (435).
This season, Lynn was averaging 20.6 points and 3.5 assists while shooting 87 percent from the free-throw line and 35 percent from deep.
His Achilles gave way Jan. 21 against Florida Gulf Coast. NJIT (9-15) has lost four straight without him.
"When I heard the news that Damon had gotten hurt I felt awful for him," said Jim Engles, who coached him at NJIT for three years before moving to Columbia this season. "He deserved to finish his career with that 'one shining moment' storybook ending. His drive, competitiveness, and leadership were unbelievable examples for all of us to see every day we were around him."
When Engles and then-assistant Kennedy discovered Lynn at Union Catholic, NJIT was a nomadic program just a few years removed from a winless season. To their credit, they recognized his gifts early and built around him soon after his arrival.
As a result, the Highlanders posted back-to-back 20-win seasons and appearances in the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. They earned a place in a conference and, with a win at Michigan (Lynn scored 20), captured the attention of the nation. He became an Associated Press honorable mention All-American.
"All of that, and he was a humble kid who never asked for anything and was an honor roll student in the classroom," Kennedy said. "It was an honor to have coached him."
In 2015 NJIT broke ground on a $100 million, 3,500-seat multipurpose arena that is due to open sometime within the next year. There is no doubt that Lynn's No. 5 will hang in those rafters.
"He may be too young to realize this right now, but the legacy that he has left at NJIT will be talked about for years to come," Engles said. "I am 100 percent convinced he will take his degree from NJIT in the spring and move on to a new story that will be just as incredible as the one he wrote over the last four years."
Fox 32 here in the Chi just had a nice expose on Alec Petes. Awesome piece and great pub for this young man and the school in a large metro area. Again positive piece that gives this program some much well served publicity!!!! ;D
Congrats to AP on being one of the 30 finalists for the Naismith Award.

Meet Valpo's Alec Peters, the NCAA's best-kept secret
Laken Litman , laken.litman@indystar.com Published 5:09 p.m. ET Feb. 25, 2017
"VALPARAISO – Matt Lottich held the edge in this conversation with John Calipari.
It was Dec. 7 and Lottich's Valparaiso team was in Lexington to take on then-No. 7 Kentucky. The two coaches met at midcourt before tipoff for a chat.
"How do you guard Alec Peters?" Calipari asked.
"You light a candle and pray," Lottich replied.
The Wildcats won that game 87-63, but Peters — a 6-9, 235-pound power forward for what could be one of the most dangerous mid-major teams heading into March — had 23 points and eight rebounds. After turning down the NBA last spring to come back for his senior season, Peters is averaging 23.1 points and 10 rebounds ahead of the Horizon League tournament, which begins Friday. If the Crusaders (24-6) win it, they will receive a bid to the NCAA tournament after being NIT runner-up last season.
Peters is Valpo's key to a run. And could be the most intriguing player down the tournament stretch.
"There has not been one team, one player that has been able to guard Alec Peters one-on-one," Lottich told IndyStar. "Teams in our conference know our actions and some of our tendencies and they load up on him. The best thing about him is he's efficient. A willing passer when they take away his shot opportunities and he'll go get a rebound. He'll find a way to score, but he won't do it at the expense of hurting his team."
In Lottich's first season as head coach — Bryce Drew left Valparaiso in April for Vanderbilt after five years — he said they put together a strong schedule against a handful of RPI Top 100 teams, including Oregon, Kentucky, Rhode Island, Alabama and BYU.
...."
Give the rest of it a click/read.
Two draft projection sites I checked out this morning...one has him going 52 to the Suns (I can't remember which site this was), the other (DraftExpress) has him going 30 to the Jazz.
Some more recognition....

Found this 2-year-old post by LaPorte Ave Apostle...Recapping Alec's sophomore year...projecting where he would wind up in March 2017. LOVE the last line of the post about Bryce...
===============================================================
The new season blocks record is 98. The old one was 72. So, should stand for a while. We'll miss you, Vashil, especially the extra year you should've had. His career mark was 170, #2 behind Raitis' 228.
The new record for most points in fresh-soph years is 1003. Alec posted the #8 season for points with 570, and while having more games than most of the rest of those guys on the list helped, he still had to do it. Had he hit one more 3 at the end (wouldn't that've been nice) he'd have tied senior Dan Oppland for season points, and he'd have passed senior Rowdy Broekhoff to have the #6 season in 3FGs alone. (Let that sink in for a second.)
As it is, he posted the #5 all-time 3-pt shooting season, at 46.6%, and is just behind Seth Colclasure for the #5 3FG% career, at 42.55%.
So how much better could he be? I'll leave that to Kyle to project improvement, and simply give the most conservative estimate (what else) and tell you where he'd be if he posts 2 more seasons just like these 2. Just a baseline; obviously he'd do better, just as he exceeded last year this year.
Games
1. Buggs 138
2. Alec 136
Points
1. Bryce 2185
2. Alec 2006
Rebounds
t4. Dan Oppland 782
t4. Alec 782
Field Goals
1. Alec 698
2. Bryce 696
3FG
1. Bryce 364
2. Alec 280
FTs
6. Dan Oppland 364
7. Alec 330
After 20 more FTA he'll be top 10 for FTs as well as 3FGs.
Again, this is the baseline. I mean, why would Bryce leave in the next two years? Because he's the only one who can keep Alec from breaking most of his records ; )
Congratulations to Alec on being named the Horizon League Scholar Athlete of the Season! Also, I thought everyone will appreciate the following tweet with video showing Alec continuing his work ethic and practicing on one leg:

Is Alec medically cleared to play be then?
I thought I read somewhere that he'll skip the heavy workouts and scrimmaging and mainly concentrate on interviews, medical stuff and straight skills that don't stress the foot (what that would be aside from spot up shooting is beyond me). He is living and training in Chicago.
That is a pretty exclusive list to be part of, especially when several teams are going to be turned off by his injury.

Alec's draft status and position may be uncertain, but he should be able to use these interviews to determine where in the NBA (and pro basketball as a whole) his skillset is the best match for future success. Even if he is not drafted, the NBA scouts will be looking at him wherever he ends up playing next year.
I wish him the best!
Alec Peters Should Be A 2nd Round Target

Alec Peters would be a quality value pick for the Philadelphia 76ers if he is available at the 46th or 50th selection in the 2017 NBA Draft.

21 Thunder
Alec Peters, PF, Valparaiso The Thunder had the worst 3-point percentage in the NBA last season. Enter Peters, one of college basketball's top shooters. No, he may not have NBA athleticism, but for a team that needs to make shots, Peters and his remarkable 60.4 percent true shooting percentage fits. Oklahoma City is a team that needs to win now; taking a college senior like Peters is more wise than taking some sort of project.
I sent an e-mail to the Blazers (since I live in Portland) and gave them my blessing to draft Alec Peters. I'm sure they read it and are taking my advice.

I think we should be grateful if any NBA team decides to draft Alec.
I did have to think twice if being drafted by the Sixers was a good thing. I decided it was slightly better than not being drafted.

I enjoy watching the Warriors play quite a bit and watching their loss to the Cavs on Friday, I thought Alec Peters would be a great fit on the Warriors. Fundamentally sound, great passer and catcher and can knock down an open shot.

I think Alec's skill set would be a great fit in most teams offensive schemes these days. The NBA game is pace & space and being able to stretch the floor. He can hit 3's and is a very underrated rebounders.
He'd be a great fit in Chicago too in Fred Hoiberg's "offense" (the Bulls front office hasn't give him any players that fit his offense in the time he's been there. Butler is great, other then that they have an overpard & washed up Dwayne Wade, & about 4 PG's that are terrible shooters). Nikola Mirotic isn't going to be resigned and the Bulls could try Alec in the same stretch 4 role, but Alec actually would be willing to attempt to play Defense and grab boards which Niko struggle to achieve in his time with Bulls.
I feel like for Alec it will be more important about finding a team that is a good fit rather then being drafted the highest pick possible.

I agree. I think going to a team with a strong culture and a chance to win matters most to him. His decision to stay at Valpo last offseason shows that.
Do you mean a team like Boston and Brad S.? It seems like they would fill the bill on that.

Boston is a team with a lot depth right now, so maybe he wouldn't get the opportunity there right away.
I think wherever he lands he will be hard pressed for minutes on any roster. Probably a 2nd pick & he will be coming off the injury. Should want to find a roster where the offensive system and opportunity is available to him.
Unfortunately it's a little out of his hands on where he gets drafted. 76ers feel like a solid fit, jazz, bulls, to name a few. It would be interesting to hear where his agents want him to land.
It's going to come down to fit/opportunity for Alec unless he gets picked in the 1st rnd with his guaranteed contract, which in that case he would have more job security b/c the team would be more invested in him bc they used a 1st end pick on him. 2nd rnd contracts aren't guaranteed and teams generally are quicker to release 2nd rnd picks or stash them in the D-League.

Alec Peters: My Life As An NBA Draft Prospect
By: Ryan Mayer
Date: June 12, 2017 12:02 PM
If Peters gets picked in the first round do you think it's too early to be hitting up Alec for a big donation for ARC improvements? Maybe between Bryce and Alec we could come up with all the money needed. :)
Have been thinking that for a while myself ::)
Maybe Lavar Ball will offer Alec a huge sponsorship deal. And then pay for sponsorship rights on the newly renovated ARC: Big Baller Arena.
Think of the potential gifts from Gordon Hayward to Butler after he racks up $200m in salaries earned. They took him as a late bloomer and he is from Indy. Huge gift ahead?
I doubt Bryce would give Valpo anything near a million.
It's going to take Ten's of million's of dollar's to renovate the ARC. Sounds like thats not even the priority right now. A stand alone student rec center sounds like the focus and then potentially a renovate ARC if we could find lead donors for each of the projects.

Boston is also a team that seems poised to undergo a great deal of roster overhaul in the coming years as they begin to make the trades and signings necessary to compete for titles with Cleveland and Golden State. Much of their current depth may be on the way out in consolidation trades for a star or stars. Peters could absolutely find a role in Boston from day one because if there's one thing the Celtics lack, it's rebounding. Additionally, a polished senior with a skillet that makes him a perfect NBA roleplayer with the potential to be more would be very attractive to teams aspiring to contend. The Jazz do seem like a decent fit and the Bulls with their desperate need for shooting would be a great fit. Not a fan of the fit in Philadelphia, too many players at his position for him to get meaningful minutes. I remember hearing some speculation that the Pacers might be interested.

Been hearing the same thing in Indy. Hayw
ard, the free agent, really wants to play for Stevens again and we'll see if his agent can come to an agreement with the Celtics ownership. A big difference from when Stevens was recruiting Hayw
ard out of Brownsburg High School to Butler. A few million $ difference. Gordon made $15.41 million with the Jazz this past year.

Big time news. Former Valpo star Alec Peters confirms that he's been cleared for individual basketball workouts. "The reigns are off."
Or is it the "reign is over" and the "reins are off"? Perhaps, in a sense, both are true.
