SLU just offered Terrence Shannon. Nice group of schools in line. Loyola, DePaul, SLU and UIC and also Austin Peay plus Lewis per Verbal Commits ...more offers coming I'd imagine.

I would guess not. If we were going to "offer" why continue to wait? Still think we might save 1 scholly for next year or a mid-year transfer. I think PF is our greatest need for next year at least while Mileek continues to develop. We need a rebounder and defensive guy at PF since our centers have not yet shown that ability consistently. Hopefully they will make progress over the summer in that regard.

How many scholarships do we have to use yet. Is it 2 or 3? Parker and Marty's for sure I know but was there another?

3 Burton's scholarship.

VUGrad1314

Looking at all of the talent eligible at Nevada  has some speculating that the Martin twins and Jordan Caroline could transfer. Do you think we'd have a shot at any of them?

M

I would never say never....but probably no

Question for the locals. Did anyone see this happening just a year ago? Trace played for Valparaiso High School and after 1 year at prep school he's now committed to playing for Maryland. Happy for the kid but did we miss out on a difference maker?

Wonder how much money made it's way into Maravilla's pocket for this one.

Honest question, not intended to be snarky....do we really think money was exchanged hands?  After all, he is the 5th of 5 signees in one class at MD for this upcoming season.  There isn't enough money in college basketball for the 13th player @ MD to get his handler paid.

I think favors exist of course for a player with minimal amateur chops, but not likely illegal (more shady).

VU2014

Maravilla is a shady character but let's not speculate. It sounds like Trace really stepped up his game over the last year. He gained a lot more interest of the course of the 8-9 months.

NativeCheesehead

Maravilla told the head coach at IUN two years ago he would steer a player to him for 25k.  Fact.

An NAIA coach makes enough money to justify/consider $25,000 pay-to-play?  Certainly a public school has no such funds.  That leaves "donors"...?  How is this a fact?  Is it published or word of mouth?

NativeCheesehead

Didn't say he took him up on it. In fact the IUN coach told him what he could do with the offer.

Looks like we have a local Region 2018 recruit who per Twitter has selected Valpo.

Langston Stalling from Bowman Academy tweeted.

Per his Hudl info he is listed as 6-5 and weighs 215 lbs.

Local kid and not using up one of our athletic scholarships...good deal for him and the team!

VULB#62

According to Oren he is a walkon with a full academic scholarship. So the athletic scholarships are still open. Shrewd!

VU2014

Wow Langston looks like one hell of a walk-on. He's was valedictorian at Bowman. He's a finisher around the rim from the looks of it and has some good size. Really impressive walk-on and it's a plus that he's a local kid.

Short answer: No.

M

I don't know if he has a jumper or not, but that athleticism is pretty special.

Valpo has 2 potential future walk-ons that might actually be able to produce at some point in the future. Steven Helm has his mission and won't be in school next year but you'd think he could be emergency depth with upside. Langston is also depth with upside. He has some really nice athleticism and finishing ability. It's always nice to have roster depth that won't be pushover in practice.

VU2014

Terrence Shannon just rose above JFL in the Sun-Times class of 2018 rankings from Illinois. Wow. His recruitment has absolute blown up the last few weeks. I'm not sure we'll end up offering, but we were reported to have been showing interest.

.......

5. Terrence Shannon, 6-6, Lincoln Park (Uncommitted)

It really has taken a long time for college programs to wake up and see the upside and talent of Shannon. This is the quintessential "prospect" and late bloomer, and it's about where he's headed because the springy 6-6 senior is coming fast. Long and super athletic with a growing offensive game, this lefty put together a solid senior season. He opens eyes with his high ceiling. If he doesn't secure a mid-major plus or high-major offer this spring, he certainly will after a year of prep school.

6. Javon Freeman, 6-4, Whitney Young (Valparaiso)

Valpo nabbed an ideal Missouri Valley Conference recruit. Long, active and bouncy, Freeman is a slasher who is a devastating finisher in the open court. The perimeter jumper remains a work in progress, but he can impact the game in a variety of ways. His overall feel for the game has improved. Plus, he's a proven winner after having won a state championship as a junior and finishing second in the state as a senior.

Someone on this forum said it best, his early commitment to a non P5 school effectively ended the media's love affair with JFL.

They have nothing new to be excited about with JFL.  But Terrance Shannon's lack of NLI makes him intriguing and exciting.  It's like a dog with a new toy, forget the old tennis ball!!!

I'm pretty excited to see the depth of our program excel in this way.  To have any walk-ons is not always a guarantee.  But to have (2) that can play minutes and make practice a real challenge is quite the feather in Coach's cap.

Circumstances have a lot to do with this, but Coach still had to maneuver the market correctly and land these two guys.

Langston's length and decent athleticism will lead to game minutes and one heck of a hard defender to score on in practice!!!  And he is Free99!!! (As far as scholarships are concerned that is)

$25k for a NAIA kid?  Wonder how much it costs for a D-I prospect?
