I count 13 wins...  SUU vs St Louis will be interesting tonight. (SLU lost by 20+ to Ball State); Santa Clara vs Northern Colorado will also be interesting, SC lost to Tennessee State)... 'Bama-Dayton; URI-Cincy could have a nice impact on our RPI... or a bad impact...

The HL is not going to get an at large bid any time soon.  But interesting nonetheless.

Coppin State falls to 0-3 after a 89-59 drubbing by Coastal Carolina, now 1-2. They were 7-34 from 2-point range last night, 12-36 from 3-point range.  This morning, the eagles got up early to drive down to Charleston to catch a flight to Salt Lake City. They get into SLC about 2:30pm, a 2-hour bus ride from the airport ... and Tip Off in Provo TONIGHT against BYU at 7pm.... oh to be young again!

Brown outscored URI 39-38 in the second half, but did fall 79-72.  URI now 3-0; Brown 1-2.

so after 3 days... our opponents have 3 wins and a push.

Tonight... other than the Coppin - BYU mistake (this may turn into a push), Chicago State rides into the Kohl Center to take on the Badgers... and the MoState Bears (2-0) host the 'powerful' (cough) Fontbonne University in the Griffins season opener.  Fontbonne is picked 10th in the 10-team "Saint Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference."

11/17/2016   Missouri State 100  Fontbonne  27
11/17/2016   Wisconsin 69 Chicago State 51

so after 4 days, the opponents have 4 wins and a push.

Friday?   Looks like one more win, and another push.

11/18/2016   Southern Utah   Bethesda   Cedar City, Utah
11/18/2016   Coppin State   Utah   Salt Lake City
11/18/2016   Alabama   Ball State   Tuscaloosa  -- Push.

and the Winner of the Valpo -Bama game gets BYU... who just destroyed SLU over the last 10 minutes...92-62, BYU is 4-0, SLU is 2-2.  11,050 watching that game at the buzzer on the youtube channel.

Yikes, Bryce is going to have a tough time after that loss to Bucknell.  They aren't the same quality team from a few years ago (2011-2012/2012-2013 seasons), and had just lost to Butler by 26.

That was Byrce's first loss to Butler and it was a bad one.

Way way too early....but what if Bryce doesn't have success there?  Does he go to another mid-major?  Does he become an assistant?  I believe in time he will turn it around.  But very interesting to speculate

Not sure what the comment about Scott underperforming was, but Scott has exceeded all expectations in his 14 years at Baylor (wow that's hard to believe it's been 14 years).  He has competed for Big 12 tournament titles, been a perennial NCAA team and has sent a number of talented players to the NBA all without any major issues.  He righted the ship there after Bliss and has a 252-172 record (essentially highest winning percentage of any Baylor coach) despite a completely decimated program when he took over (21-63 his first 3 years). Not to mention his Christian outreach.  Baylor was not a basketball school before Scott got there and it is clearly a upper tier program now.  Moreover, it is still a private school in the middle of a conference of Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.

And, can we please let Bryce have some time to learn the SEC and build his program.  We want him to have success too as that does reflect well on what he learned and accomplished at Valpo.  In fact, their struggles show that Stallings didn't exactly leave the cupboard full and maybe why he left.  Those last 4 years weren't exactly stellar, but Vandy will have patience as long as they are competing for NCAA bids.  Again a private school in the midst of Kentucky, Tennessee, and LSU basketball.  Although competing in the SEC doesn't take much as we have seen with Alabama last night.

Fun game to watch... Indiana AT Fort Wayne (8pm Central) in front of "the largest crowd to ever watch a basketball game in the Coliseum"... "been sold out for about a year".  The Mastadon's are favored to win the Summit.

IU is handling the tickets for this game, so it's essentially a home game to appease their Fort Wayne recruits/fanbase.

And I think it is a state school/state school or more likely parent/child thing.  They will never come to the ARC.  I use to lobby Creen about it and never got any hope from him.

Fort Wayne managed this in a similar way Valpo managed to get Purdue in the building a few years back, by losing their town's best hoopers to those big schools.

Ft. Wayne  was only given about 2,500 tickets, from which they had to use some for comps.  IU called all the shots as it basically is a home game for them as they took 7,500 tickets.  It will be on the Big 10 Network.  A number of years back IU played  pre-season intra-squad games in FW and sold out the place every year.  They discontinued the game at FW when the NCAA would not allow  schools to play these games so far away from their campus.

We usually have IPFW on the schedule.  This years schedule is a fine one.  However if IPFW and Oakland can get P5 teams to come to their gym, we too should be able to find a way.

We got Bama and byu this year as a result of our previous success.  An invite at the big table that other HL schools couldn't get.

Most people say size doesn't matter but in Valpo's case the size of the ARC is too small compared to the record.

Fort Wayne was sold out with over 10,000. I think we need to have at least another 1500 or so to get consideration from Major Schools in the area If they would agree to come here to play a possible embarrassing lost to a Mid-Major

I watched portions of the Santa Clara- Arizona game and they will not be an easy opponent. This was after breaking down and watching Butler beat Vandy. From a talent, team development standpoint we could compete well with all of them.

Just for clarification, the IU vs. Fort Wayne was basically an IU "home" game.  IU controlled everything, from ticket allotment to game time, etc.  IU had nearly 80% of the tickets.  While the TV announcers were drooling over the fact that FW sold out the game in 20 minutes, they only had about 1,200 to sell. the rest were sold in Bloomington as students could buy as many as 8 tickets per student like my grandaughter did.  Info, my son was on the lower level and his tickets were $45.00 ea.  FYI, I remember when Purdue came to VU the ticket prices were doubled for that game.

UVS had 4 players with 20 or more points.

Haws, the kid who forearmed Alec in the face and threw the ball at Lexus, was 1-10 from the field. I hated to see that.

ouch, ouch, ouch... pinch me... who's bright idea was it to schedule Kentucky this year????   ouch...

Kentucky 115  Arizona State 69 (RPI #157)  in the Bahama's....  yes, 46 points.

Rebounds:  KY 59, ASU 33
Assists:  KY 33 ASU 15
Field Goals:  KY 44/84   ASU  25/73
Blocks  KY 9 ASU 4

At least they have to play UCLA on Saturday before our game....

So Coppin State has completed that monster road trip... got to settle in at home in Baltimore against "Chestnut Hill College"... fortunately, non-D1 games don't count in the RPI.   Chestnut Hill 76 Coppin State 73.   Eagles 0-8 on the year.

Even if we lose by 100, it's always a good idea to schedule Kentucky. They'll help Valpo's RPI and SOS regardless of the outcome.

As the season progresses, Oregon's RPI will continue to get better as they'll be playing teams with winning out-of-conference records (because PAC12 teams don't really have to play road games).

Worst case-- our freshman spend big minutes on the court being schooled by some of the best. After that being intimidated anywhere by anyone will be unlikely.

Best case-- we hit some shots and compete. I will define "compete" at a later date.

We lost by 22 points, only thing they can do is stay top 25.  Irregardless, if we didn't get At Large last year...we aren't getting it this year.  We have years of reputation building seasons to go under this coach to gain the sort of At Large respect required.  We also have to win a game in March on the big stage a handful of times.

Nice thoughts, and I really enjoy our effort and play this year, but zero chance for At Large.  It's tournament champs or bust.

Talking in absolutes like that is silly. Valpo only has one loss, so yes, it's possible to earn an at-large this season. It has nothing to do with previous success, reputation, or past tournament wins. Mid Tennessee State out of the Sun Belt was given a bid with 5 losses only a few years ago, and they hadn't won an NCAA tournament game since the 80s. Sure, the NCAA selection committee doesn't respect mid majors (sometimes), but nobody knows what they're going to do year to year. The criteria is ever changing.

While it's very unlikely Valpo only loses 2-3 more games the rest of the year, it also hasn't happened yet, so it remains a possibility. Its  possible Valpo only loses 1 more game out of conference. Its possible Valpo only suffers 1 loss in conference, considering how poor the conference is this year. Not a "zero chance" like you say.

It's unlikely, but still possible.

I'm probably somewhere in between. I agree that we can't count out an at-large at this point. That said, the margin of error is probably smaller for the HL than any time since we joined the conference. Think back a couple of years ago. Murray State won 30 consecutive games after losing to us at the beginning of the season, then lost in the OVC tournament, and failed to earn an at-large with an RPI of something like 33.  Their fate was in fact sealed all the way back in early November. Could that happen to us?  Certainly it could. This year's HL is a dumpster fire with no quality wins - just terrible losses.

I see your point, but you got a couple facts wrong in the Murray State comparison. While still impressive, they won 25 in a row, not 30. Their RPI was 63 (!), not in the 30's. They had a 239 RPI loss, and only one top 100 win (which was at home). 5 losses would probably leave Valpo out, but their resume would still be way more impressive than Murray State's 3 years ago.

I can't see Valpo winning out in conference, but if there's certainly a path.

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to bring up profits.  The NCAA is looking for Return On Investment.  VU has how big of an alumni base?  Is it "Chicagos Team"?  What viewership do we bring to the table?  Is it likely Peters is going to hit The Shot 2.0?

Just some opinions, no facts.

P.S.  Did the B1G invite Rutgers and Maryland for any other reason outside of TV viewership or recruiting territory expansion?

Just so we can ponder some of the alchemy employed in the early ranking systems I'll throw out a few comparative numbers.
                                       Warren Nollen          Sagarine       Pomeroy
Oakland                             136                        85               130
Vanderbilt                          110                        68               70
Alabama                            143                        73               73
BYU                                  185                        72               60
Rhode Island                       58                         50               42
Valpo                                 55                         78               74

These look to be updated for all of the Tuesday Nov 29'th action. Too early for anything to mean much but already some significant puzzlements.

11/29/2016   Alabama 76  Charleston Southern 46  Tuscaloosa
11/29/2016   Ball State 92  IU-Kokomo 52  Muncie  (No Post-Valpo Burnout there...)

11/30/2016   Georgetown 96 Coppin State 44   Washington DC
11/30/2016   Indiana State 63  Northern Illinois 52 Terre Haute
11/30/2016   UIC 74  Chicago State 58 (@UIC)
11/30/2016   UC - Irvine 58 Santa Clara 55  Santa Clara  SC shot 33%, UCI shot 55% ... 15 total free throws in the game, each team hitting 4.   Different officials working those games, I guess.
11/30/2016   UNLV 89 Southern Utah 81  Cedar City, Utah
11/30/2016   Oregon 93 Western Oregon 54  Eugene

so the OOC opponents go 2-4 on the night, but the UIC win is better for us since we play them twice.

Sagarin holds steady at #78
Nolan RPI bumps us UP to #48

Kentucky's Nolan RPI is #25
Missouri State's is 88
Indiana State is 238
Santa Clara 257
Chicago State  200

Only one Opponent OOC game Friday night... and the Tide blows a 12-point second-half lead... and loses at Texas 77-68...

12/3/2016       Kentucky   UCLA   Lexington
The 11th-ranked Bruins' hot start to the season continued with a 97-92 win at Kentucky. UCLA star Lonzo Ball had 14 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds and this big late 3-pointer.  UCLA scores an official 1.17 points per possession. Loss sends John Calipari's record at Rupp crashing all the way down to 124-5.

Don't know if they'll retain #1 after that showing!

12/3/2016       Ball State up 7 at the half on  IUPUI... and the Jaguars came back to win it 73-62.
12/3/2016       Chicago State beats Western Illinois 83-76 in Overtime
12/3/2016       Oakland 78 Southern Utah 68 hurts now, helps later

the Valpo RPI is 55 with these games to come...and that URI game will be big !

12/3/2016       Rhode Island  is up 4 with 11 to play @ Providence
and you can read all about the URI LOSS here:
http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/gametracker/recap/NCAAB_20161203_RI@PROV

12/3/2016       Oregon  Savannah State   Eugene  5:00pm
Uh, the Ducks scored 70 points.  in the SECOND half!   128-59
http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/gametracker/recap/NCAAB_20161203_SAV@OREG

Valpo's RPI falls to 59 after the URI loss

12/3/2106       USC 91 BYU 84... as the Valpo curse continues

and Valpo's RPI falls to 69 when that score is posted, three more to try to recover some of this.  Since we haven't played any of these schools, they won't impact us tonight...

12/3/2016       Missouri State   Air Force   Colorado Springs  8pm  (Most favored by 3.5, Bears down 8 with 13 to play... and the Falcons won it 83-70.

12/3/2016       Indiana State   Utah State   Logan Utah  (USU favored by 5, USU up 11 with 16 to play).  TJ Bell with a layup with 2-seconds on the clock and the Sycamores win it 62-61.

12/3/2016       San Jose State  55 Santa Clara 40 San Jose (SJSU favored by 2.5)

Valpo                                 55                         78               74

These look to be updated for all of the Tuesday Nov 29'th action. Too early for anything to mean much but already some significant puzzlements.

Did you take an alchemy class at Valpo?

Only one "Game" on Sunday for our OOC opponents...Coppin State (0-8) (RPI #333) @ Clemson (4-2) (RPI #16) 2pm.  Tigers are favored by 39.

That is one of three games where the underdog is given 0% chance of winning (NCA&T @ Notre Dame; Radford @ North Carolina)

I thought we would be better than 80.  But I suppose ssu and coppin weighing us down.

I wonder just how much we drop if we lose to #7 on their court.

Ucla messed it up.  Wish Kentucky was #1.  What is the highest rank team we have ever played? Have we ever played a #1?

It was recruiting boilerplate for a while that we had played the #1 team four years out of five.

12/6/2016   Ball State  80  Bradley 63 in   Muncie
12/6/2016   Rhode Island 51  Old Dominion 39   Kingston, RI    and ODU outscored URI 22-20 in the second half...

OOOP Texas and Utah Valley both lost... so it was not a complete sweep for us...

BUT, Valpo's RPI stays at 58; Sagarin up a few spaces to 77

Provided for entertainment purposes only... :-X
the Nolan Predictor doubled our chances of winning tonight... from 1% to 2%; and decreased the line from 30 down to 29.  The VegasInsider line is 20, with a half-time spread of 12.5 point.  75% of the side money is going on BBN to cover.  For the year, Valpo is 3-3 against the spread.  the O/U is 155 and that is getting some action in Vegas; shifting up from 153.   They are predicting 87-67 as the Final +/- one point for either team.

Yes, the Ramblers are off to a nice start at 5-2 against D-1 competition.  That said, they're picked to finish 7th in the MVC, so time will tell.  You may recall that they began the 2010-11 season 7-0, then went 9-15 (7-11 in the HL) the rest of the way.

Valpo started the day with an rpi of 58...

12/7/2016   Akron 87 Coppin State 63  @Akron  (CSU still winless)
12/7/2016   Missouri State  79  Southeast Missouri State 71 First road win for the Bears
12/7/2016   Indiana State 72  Butler 71  my two favorite teams are Valpo and whomever beats Butler.
12/7/2016   BYU 77 Weber State 66

so the combination of the BYU win and us  playing Kentucky, boosted the Rpi to 50

I'm not sure that they won't come but rather they won't come unless we give them a two for one.  That just rubs us the wrong way.  I suspect Indiana State may have gone for the two for one thing.

Fun game on CBSSportsNet would be Vandy AT Middle Tennessee State... MTSU is FAVORED by 2.  (MidTenn's RPI is 5, coming off a 15-point road win at Ole Miss last week)

Loyola Marymount 75 Southern Utah 68... at least the TBirds covered the 11-point spread.

Tweet from TBird Nation:

LMU leads 40-28 at halftime. Onwuasor and McGee lead SUU with 13 points each, combining for 26 of SUU's 28 points.

Maybe they'll have better luck on Saturday as they stay on the coast to play Cal State-Fullerton.

and Valpo's RPI falls from #50 to #51.
and Valpo's Sagarin falls to #80.

Today's OOC games

12/11/2016 4-4  Kentucky 96 Hofstra 73  BBN goes on a 21-1 run and pulls away 96-73... deja VU all over again.

12/11/2016 4-5  Chicago State    Saint Louis    St Louis 2pm CT
Zeke Moore blocked Trayvon Palmer's 3-point attempt in the closing seconds and Saint Louis held on for a 45-43 win over Chicago State on Sunday.

12/11/2016  4-6  Western Kentucky  77 Indiana State 59 !! @ the Hulman Center
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/boxscore?gameId=400918212

Valpo's RPI is up to 36 !!!!!   Thank you KY

12/11/2016   Oregon    Alabama    Eugene - push  5PM CT - Ducks up 23-12  at the under-8 media time-out.
the DuckTide game doesn't matter to our RPI...

Indiana State was 115 RPI... falls to 165 with that loss.. they fall to 4-5 on the year... the Hilltoppers RPI climbs up to 260.
Based on RPI, we are the best team ISU will face the rest of the year... we have a better RPI than every Valley team.

the DuckTide game doesn't matter to our RPI...

The Tide came from 12 down to tie it at 56... and the ducks go on a 9-0 run over the last 1:45 to win it 65-56

Before that game went final... Valpo's WarrenNolan RPI figures:

#37  0.6138   SOS #99   0.5422

Immediately after that final was posted:
#38  0.6111   SOS #102  0.5387

so... perhaps not a "push" afterall... Could not find any other games that finished during this 5 minute stretch.

(Savannah State is in OT at Oregon State... they lost by 70 to Oregon last Thursday)

Alabama now looks to be a much better team than when we faced them. They had the lead with only a few minutes left and their athleticism coupled with more experience could magnify the importance of our victory over them. As for the Hilltoppers they just looked like a good team and the better team for almost all of the game. I now do not know what to expect from Indiana St.

Everybody, everywhere is playing and improving (well maybe not Detroit) so I still am not comfortable on our standing in this larger mix.

Love the idea of expanding the crossroad classic.  Great for entire state base, businesses in Indy, fans, students, fans, high school coaches.

I wonder if legislatures would have to encourage it and pull some weight (you know like the way Baylor got into the B12).  I wonder how aggressive our athletic department is when trying to put the program is good situations?  Maybe they try, I don't know.

Are you referring to the legislature forcing IU and Purdue to play the Indiana mid-majors in a preseason Crossroads Classic?  Novel idea.

Personally, I see something like that, played in Indianapolis,  being a great thing for the state and college basketball, as whole.  This could be as insane as Hoosier Hysteria.  And get tremendous press for all teams involved.  It would be closed to outsiders.  It would showcase Indiana college basketball.  The big boys would actually have to get psyched to play the E'villes, Valpos and IPFWs.  Upsets would not be frequent but RPIs would all do well on a state-wide average.

Don't look now but, Northwestern survives Chicago State 68-64.  They were within 2 with under 60 seconds to go.  A guy named Fred Sims hit 7 3's, many of which were well beyond the NBA 3 line.  They are VERY athletic and small.  They also appeared to be well coached.  If they are "on" we will have our hands full.  Now on to watch Wisconsin and Green Bay!!

haha I wish. It would be great for college basketball and the state of Indiana but considering how IU, ND, and Purdue make up a large base of Indiana college sports fans I would bank on it happening since those teams, technically have more to lose from playing one of the top mid-major teams in the nation on a neutral court. Wouldn't be popular with those fans.

But if the legislature could figure out a way to raise a great deal of tax revenue for the State via, TV rights to a College Basketball State of Indiana Tournament then MAYBE they would consider pushing some button to get something done, but I don't see the urge by any politician willing to push such an agenda. Maybe if there was a large financial incentive for the IU, Purdue and ND's of Indiana schools to participate such as prize $ for the Top 3 schools Athletic Departments or scholarship fund from the TV rights of the tournament. Either way I don't see it happening.

12/17/2016  DePaul  109 Chicago State 61
Eli Cain hit seven 3-pointers and scored a career-high 31 points, Tre'Darius McCallum had his second-career double-double and DePaul cruised to a 109-61 victory over Chicago State on Saturday.

12/17/2016  Washington State 69 Santa Clara 68   Pullman  3PM
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Josh Hawkinson scored 21 points and Washington State staged a furious comeback in the last six minutes, defeating Santa Clara 69-68 on Saturday when Charles Callison came up with the game-saving block.

The Cougars (6-5) scored 14 of the game's final 16 points, but couldn't breathe a sigh of relief until Callison sealed the win with his last second block of SCU's Jared Brownridge. It was only fitting that the game lied in their hands, as Brownridge had scored 25 points and Callison was at the center of WSU's rally.

The Cougars trailed 66-55 with less than six minutes to play when they began to catch their rhythm. Callison brought WSU to within 66-65 on a 3-pointer with 2:09 remaining, and his layup with 1:25 left gave the team its first lead since halftime.

Santa Clara (5-7) missed its last seven shots, but still had a chance to send the game into overtime in the closing seconds when they trailed 69-66. WSU chose to foul Jarvis Pugh with seven seconds left to prevent a 3-pointer, and his pair of free throws brought within one.

Callison, who ranks third in the Pac-12 in free throw percentage, missed the front end of a one-and-one to set the stage for the thrilling conclusion. Brownridge pulled up near the 3-point line, only to have Callison swat away the game winner.

"I knew he was going to try to get the last shot up at the 3 and I just tried to make a big play and not foul him," Callison said.

WSU showed a level of resiliency that was lacking in previous seasons, but third-year WSU coach Ernie Kent believe Saturday's comeback could be the turning in his program.

"One of the things that has kept me awake a lot of nights the last three years is when they have that saying at the end of an event here that we Coug'd it and I always kept saying `Boy, wouldn't it be great to change that around to where it meant a positive thing, that Coug'd it means you pulled it out,' " Kent said. "...Maybe this is the start of something for us."

BIG PICTURE

Santa Clara: Brownridge reached the 25-point mark for the fourth time this season, and improved his scoring average to 17.6 points per game. His seven made 3-pointers tied a season high. The Broncos have one game remaining before West Coast Conference play begins against BYU.

12/17/2016  Kentucky 103  North Carolina 100
Malik Monk scored a Kentucky freshman record 47 points and hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 16.7 seconds left to lead the sixth-ranked Wildcats past No. 7 North Carolina 103-100 on Saturday.

12/17/2016  Missouri State 71  Southeast Missouri State 66
Ryan Kreklow scored 17 points Saturday night and Missouri State held off Southeast Missouri for a 71-66 win in the campus round of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic.

12/17/2016  IUPUI 101 Southern Utah  81
Matt O'Leary scored 20 points and Darell Combs added 16 as IUPUI routed Southern Utah 101-81 on Saturday night.... shooting 60% from the field to do it.

12/17/2016  Illinois 75 BYU 73  @ United Center;   and the VALPO RPI falls to 36 on the Cougar loss...

12/17/2016  Oregon 83 UNLV 63  ... and the RPI stays at 36.  one behind Northwestern.

At least with Oakland working the power conference formula this year (lots of wins, even if they're not the toughest games), they'll help our, and the conference, RPI in league play this season. Even if their own RPI isn't so great.

That's NOT necessarily true. It'll help THEIR RPI. Not ours. Remember, opponents win percentage counts more than opponents opponents winning percentage.

HOWEVER - having more top 100 RPI opponents should look nice (didn't seem to matter last year). Everyone playing a soft schedule is a good way to game RPI - the Summit did this last year and the MAC consistently does this every year. The selection committee doesn't seem to realize this and simply goes by raw RPI and geography when seeding the last auto bids.

It definitely feels like a departure for Oakland. More often they've played -top- teams on the road, destroying their record but keeping a reasonably robust RPI for themselves. And, dragging the league down in the process.

This idea seems like core RPI truth to me, and causes powers conference RPI's to rise once conference play begins (even if it sort of feels like conference RPI's should be locked in at that point).

But, I don't see it discussed much, and basketball pundits seem to regularly get it wrong. For instance, some insist that we should wait until well after conference play begins to "trust" RPI. It's true that the numbers don't mean much after only a few games. And it's true that they won't "stabilize" until conference play is well under way. But that's beause this is when power conferences weak home schedules work their magic on their RPI's.

It seems like an under-discussed reason -not- to use RPI's in any kind of unvarnished fashion (eg not even when calculating quality wins).

As we all know, prior to this year Oakland's OOC schedules were selfishly stacked with unwinnable payday games against high majors, a tactic that clearly hurt conference RPI. To their credit, this year's schedule is much better balanced with winnable games against other mid's.  Suddenly, I'm feeling a whole lot more positive about the Oakland Golden Grizzlies. It's too bad they lost tonight, but overall they're off to a strong start and I'm happy for them.

Oakland is good but once again not as good as projected.  I'm of a fan kampe and had the pleasure of meeting him in Detroit for that $*%^ show of a conference tournament.  But that sweater was ridiculous last night.  Gave me the impression, "are they serious about the program or is this a stunt from the Will Ferrell's movie super-pro?"  What's next, kampe going to wrestle a grizzle at halftime?

The Palombizio kid from Chesterton is a good player.  We missed that one....

Semi-Pro  , but yeah that was a pretty ridiculous stunt.

We should've promised the chance to shot 10 threes a game like Kampe did...I've heard he isn't real happy with his playing time and role.  It maybe changing soon though if he keeps playing well and the rest of the team doesn't.

12/20/16:  Oregon 75 Fresno State 63 (Oregon RPI #33, Fresno State RPI:  #240)

and coming up tonight:

12/21/16:  Eastern Illinois @ Indiana State (EIU warmed up on Monday with Fontbonne 101-49)
12/21/16:  Arkansas State vs Alabama in Hunstville as the Tide continues it's trip around the state
12/21/16:  Southern Utah @ San Jose State

and Kampe tries to get his guys to focus... on Sparty at the Breslin Center... maybe they did last night, instead of Northeastern.   OU's best RPI win of the season is #194; 1-10 Oral Roberts.... oh; and the Grizz have Georgia at home on Friday night.  Georgia has two Detroit-area kids on their roster.

I watched the replay of the last 1:17 of the game ... and he wasn't wearing that sweater... I'm guessing it had something to do with "let's take the game seriously".  Be fun to have the Grizz take down Sparty... if ever there was going to be a year for that to happen, its now.  BUT, the game is at the Breslin.

Very simple. Their RPI is 195 vs our 35 so the risk-reward pushes the decision toward IUPUI.

I watched the 2nd half of Oakland's last 2 games.   They are talented, for sure.  However, I don't think I have ever seen a team with worse shot selection.  If they had some discipline they could have won both of their last two games.  Against Northeastern they shot so many 3's from 5 feet behind the line or on the move without their feet set.  It was crazy.

while UCLA losing to Oregon hurts KY's rating a little, I think it helps us more in that we played at Oregon.

In other news, DePaul lost by 3 to Nova. Why should we care? DePaul played UIC...and
Lost...DePaul blew out Chicago State...and beat Mo. state at home barely and then lost to them on. A neutral court by a bunch. So a split. A gsme like this helps their RPI which helps their opponents as well.

Couldn't help sense a sombre demeanor in Matt today.  Not upbeat, serious.  Few smiles.  Expectations getting to him a little?

On the plus side he called today's practice the best in a while.  He cited the rash of turnovers and he's getting the guys' minds straight on that.

I like his candor.

I haven't backed Mercy in years but I really enjoyed watching their "chaos" defense come together.

The good news is that Detroit is back and have finally figured out how to win. The bad news is that their OOC play was awful so each of their future wins will drag down the rest of the HL.   :'(

Oakland drops from 64 to 104. Detroit rises from 309 to 259.

How many HL games can Mercy win playing like that? Almost all of them, but 6 now looks like a minimum.

From the ESPN Statline twitter acct:

Jaleel Hogan of Detroit scored a career-high 39 points, the most by a Titans men's basketball player since Willie Green scored 41 against Wright State on Feb. 13, 2003.

Titans first ever win at the ORena. (0-4 going into tonights game)

On Sunday, the opposition went 1-1

URI held on to beat UMass 79-77 after nearly blowing a nice lead at home
MoState didn't hold on to their 11-point lead and lost at the Gentile Center 77-71 to the Ramblers.

The URI win, put them at RPI #49; so we are now 1-2 against Top 50.   Bama #75 and BYU #92 have a ways to go to break into that level.

Valpo's RPI is #72   .5645 numerically.

Monday's games:

Coppin State at Howard

HL:
Cleveland State loses at Oakland
Youngstown @ Detroit

How in the world do you lose by 11 at home to a team with an 0-9 road record?

They also lost to t a team at home with one D1 win.  Don't forget the bizarre UIC ending.  They could easily be 0-3 since playing us.  Valpo curse?

I think the question is not "how did they lose to 0-9 CSU" but rather "how did they lose twice when they are much much more talented than both those teams."

They should really complain to the NCAA website. They are listed at "Ill.-Chicago" (http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-men/d1/ncaa-mens-basketball-rpi). And that annoys me when I'm trying to compile RPI stats and figure out who is in my NCAA bracket

Yes! Preach! 🙌

The Motor City Dumpster Fire Tournament is the worst thing the HL HQ has done in years. I'm never going to get over it, till the tournament gets reformed (or till the Joe Louis Arena contract is up...).

First off nobody wants to go to Detroit (enough said). second, nobody shows up to the tourney when it in Detroit so the atmosphere is terrible and makes for poor TV and reflects poorly on the conference. Third, it took away from the extra urgency of the conference season of EVERY game matters. It makes the conference tournament tougher on the regular season conference champions and makes it more likely a garbage team or less competitive conference team sneaks up in the tournament and gets hot and wins it all. Then that team falls flat on its face in the NCAA Tournament (also reflecting poorly on the HL). Also the top two teams in the conference get the bye games and have to sit and wait to play so they are cold for the next game.

Paul did a great interview with Former Horizon League Director of Communications Bill Potter on Union Street Hoops and Paul asks him about the thinking behind changing the format. I highly encourage you give it a listen.

Making life easier for the HL HQ for sponsorships signage and it was easier on HQ from a logistics of putting the event on. Also they wanted to make it more of a conference celebration type of deal. Yeah that didn't happen, imo.

That's fine, it makes it easier for the HL HQ and sponsorships.  But does have to be Detroit every year?

QuoteBut does have to be Detroit every year?

I'm pretty sure the Horizon League signed a contract to lease the space for the Tournament so they are obligated to be there for some remaining amount of years. Not sure how much longer. That would be a question for Paul or Aaron Leavitt.

Edit: Just looked it up. 5 year deal. Horizon League makes $200,000 a year.

Horizon League hoops tournament moving to Detroit

The intent is for the men's tournament to begin next year and potentially anchor the tournament in Detroit for the foreseeable future.
Published 9:27 p.m. ET May 5, 2015
By: Mark Snyder , Detroit Free Press

The Horizon League today announced that it has agreed to a five-year deal with Olympia Entertainment to host the conference's men's basketball tournament in Detroit, beginning next season.

The Free Press reported the imminent deal Wednesday.

The first two years of the event will be held at Joe Louis Arena, and the next three at the yet-to-be-built arena for the Detroit Red Wings.

"The addition of the Horizon League men's basketball championship is a perfect compliment to our wide range of existing sports and entertainment events at our downtown Detroit venues," Tom Wilson, president of Olympia Entertainment, said in a released statement. "We look forward to providing an outstanding and memorable tournament experience for the schools, their fans and all participating student athletes."

The championship game will remain at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, on ESPN or ESPN2. Additional information will be announced later.

"The partnership with Olympia Entertainment is a unique and exciting opportunity," Horizon League commissioner Jon LeCrone said in the statement. "We want to provide a great tournament experience for all of our key constituents -- student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans -- and we are excited to work with Olympia and our institutions on that goal."

The news was first reported by the blog pantheru.com and said the conference likely would receive $200,000 per year.

The tournament currently begins on campus sites and feeds into the semifinals and finals at the home court of the highest remaining seed. Detroit Mercy and Oakland are in the Horizon League.

Having an anchor site would allow the Horizon to stage surrounding activities, making it more of an event atmosphere, which could attract multiple fans bases.

The Joe does not have much of basketball history, though there have been a few notable games.

It became an alternate basketball venue in 1984, when the Pontiac Silverdome had a scheduling conflict. It hosted the famous, decisive Detroit Pistons vs. New York Knicks Game 5 when Isiah Thomas scored 16 points in 94 seconds to force overtime.

Then the Pistons played there at the conclusion of the 1984-85 campaign, after the Silverdome roof collapsed.

It re-emerged in 2006, when the Detroit Shock won the WNBA title over the Sacramento Monarchs in the Game 5 at the JOe because the Palace of Auburn Hills had a concert conflict.

Keep in mind, a sweet 16 run is about $5+ million for a conference. It's virtually impossible to get a sweet 16 run from a 14-15 seed, and the Horizon sets itself up for a bad seed every time the top team doesn't win the conference tournament.

You don't seem to understand. As Commissioner LeCrone said when the move was made, all the big conferences play at independent sites, so if we play at an independent site, we'll be big too. It's kind of like if you start driving a fancy car like rich people do, you'll be rich too. See how simple it is?

I have said it before and i'll say it again. This move was going to happen at some point, because after the Butler run the HL started to think it's better than it is. But the quickness and urgency to do it was a direct result of our open interest in the MVC. I don't make bold declarations on this board often (mostly just uninformed opinions :) . But this comes from someone I went to high school with who worked in the Conference office at the time.

I laugh at the line about having events outside of the conference tournament that will attract fan bases from all the schools.
There's no way an average person (like me!) would want to make the commitment to go to Detroit.
I just looked at the bracket on the conference web site. What a joke. It adds in the women's tournament on the same page and includes the women in the game numbers.
So if I'm coming from Valpo, here's what it would entail if the Crusaders are a No. 1 seed and advance to the title game: a 5:30 p.m. game on March 4, a 7 p.m. game on March 6 and a 7 p.m. game on March 7.
March 4 is a Saturday, so I leave Valpo in the 9 a.m. range for the game at 4:30 central. Gas for the five-hour drive, maybe $30-$40?
Tickets for the game - I'm sure they aren't cheap. It looks like a floor-level seat is $40 per session.
Hotel room for Saturday night, Sunday night and Monday night - $250-$300 for a decent place?
I have to take vacation days off from work on Monday and Tuesday. The championship is at 6 Central on Tuesday, meaning the game ends at 8. A five-hour drive home puts me back in Valpo in the 1-2 a.m. range. And then I'm supposed to be at work on Wednesday at 8 a.m. so I don't have to take a third vacation day. I'm too old to do that any more.
So here's the tab: $600 for 3 nights in a hotel, $100 (at least) for food, $75 (at least) for gas, $160 for 1 ticket, 3 sessions = that is $935 for a bare bones estimate. Plus I burn two vacation days in early March and I'm dead tired when I get back on Wednesday morning. AND, this is assuming I go by myself, leaving my wife at home for 4 days with my 12-year-old son who would probably rather be with me and miss 2 days of school.

And this for a tournament with a crappy off-campus atmosphere where they have to hide the empty seats from the ESPN cameras. And in an environment that makes it much easier for a Non-No. 1 seed to win, giving the Horizon League a No. 15 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

I don't care what kind of extra entertainment the league lines up. I'm staying home and watching the games online or on TV.

The league must really hate Valpo to make this deal with Detroit. Taking away the incentive to win the league and host the tournament was a huge mistake. Thank you, Horizon League.

If it was a direct result of our open interest in the MVC, wouldn't the HL try to accommodate us?  Moving it to Detroit clearly hurts Valpo.  Would be much better for the basketball program if the HL would have left on campuses (would have hosted last year, brought sales tax revenue and probably another NCAA tournament bid) or place it in Chicago as opposed to Detroit.  It appears as changing the tournament site was a punishment for Valpo and further pushes us out the door.

There are many logistical issues with moving to the MVC and we'd also need to get an invite... Valpo has some athletic facility infrastructure issues. We finally got a real track for the track team to run on, but the pool is completely and utterly inadequate for a D1 facility. It's pretty embarrassing actually.

The MVC scouted Valpo a few years ago and one of the reasons we didn't get a bid were facilities, TV markets, and size of the school I believe. The MVC badly wanted to get into Chicago for TV rating reasons and also recruiting, so they let in Loyola (they also considered UIC). I'm not sure if an invite will ever happen to the MVC or at least for a very long time or until they lose a team to the Big East or something (which I don't see happening after the recent poaching of Creighton).

https://twitter.com/NWIOren/status/713509283627941888

If this were to happen then maybe there is an opening but the MVC mens basketball conference would be pretty darn watered down compared to just a few years ago if they were to lose Creighton and Wichita State. Although it would most likely be good for raising the level of competition in most other sports teams.

Not really. In Summer of 2013, Detroit's new stadium wasn't even funded yet, and the MVC visited schools around tourny time. The Horizon League didn't act urgently because they kept with the same format for another two years, well after the conference alignments happened.

My biggest gripe with the thing WAS the timing, and how they slapped their top school in the face. Valpo had an at-large caliber team coming in (literally everyone but 1 bench warmer returning), and the Horizon had a great chance at sending a really good seed to the tournament for a very winable game. The rest of the league was losing some talent (UWGB lost Sykes, Cleveland State their whole roster) and there were three teams with new coaches.

Oh, and also the league added Northern Kentucky WHEN THEY WEREN'T EVEN TOURNAMENT ELIGIBLE YET. If there was ever a year to protect the top seed, it was that 2015-16 season. But nope, Valpo got hammered in the RPI all year due to UIC and NKU (accounted for almost 10 positions alone). And then they got rewarded with a conference tournament game in an empty area with new sight lines.

Why didn't they just wait a year to sign the 5 year contract? They'd at least not have to play 2 years in a dumpy stadium. Why didn't they wait a year to add NKU? They'd at least be D1 eligible and wouldn't be an RPI drag.

That was a mind numbingly horrible decision, and it was proved to be terrible when Valpo made a "what could have been" NIT run while UWGB got murdered in the tournament by Buddy Hield and co. I still firmly believe the Horizon League lost out on millions from that decision to move the tournament a year early.

I've mistaken A&M for Oklahoma. Similar jerseys/teams. They even played each other in the tournament. UWGB got crushed by A&M, but A&M actually beat UNI in the next round, for those that turned the game off after UNI was up 13 with under 50 seconds left.

I'm guessing we are all rooting for BYU over Santa Clara so they can stay in the top 100.

Actually, the Santa Clara win over BYU isn't a bad outcome at all for Valpo. Though it does slightly impact Valpo's win over BYU, it makes theloss to Santa Clara look more palatable (the "worst loss" for Valpo doesn't look so bad, especially considering it was in overtime). Santa Clara has actually played pretty well (6-3) since defeating Valpo, and their RPI has improved by quite a bit. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but it was something like a 75 point improvement in Santa Clara's RPI. From now on, we can cheer for BYU and Santa Clara to win out, which will help Valpo's RPI.

Santa Clara played the last eight minutes against BYU with both of their big guys fouled out, somebody not suited up, and only 5 regular players available. I tip my hat to them. They defend well, compete hard and when their shots are dropping, they are dangerous.

I would say Santa Clara. Conference foes usually have better scouting, higher motivation, less fear and greater familiarity with your home court; that's why it's hard to escape the conference season without a loss.

Oakland has now lost 3 consecutive home games. I can't venture a guess as to how long it's been since we did that. It would have to be a long time ago.

Edit: The last time we lost 3 consecutive home games was in '07-'08, our first season in the HL. Soon to be 10 years ago.

So we wake up on this snowy morning #66, .5694 in the RPI; and a half-game lead in the HL:

1pm/noon:  Oakland 79 Milwaukee 70 Overtime; Jalen Hayes had 23-14 on Friday in their loss to Green Bay; had 22-11 in their win today. that's 45-15 on the weekend, but they didn't win both games, and he did get 5 of the rebounds in the overtime period that should never have happened.

2pm/1pm:  Detroit 93 Green Bay 92  DeShawndre Black's 3-point play with 12 seconds left gave Detroit Mercy a 93-92 victory; UDM's Hogan with 28-4 (had 15-11 on Friday, for a 43-15 weekend, but they lost on Friday to Milwaukee)

4pm/3pm:  Wright State 88 UIC 86  Alstork with 24, Mitchell had 14 and 10

Valpo the only team in the league to go 2-0 on the weekend.  Shane Hammink scored 21 points and Alec Peters added 16 points and 12 rebounds, to go with 25 points and 14 rebounds  on Friday for 41 and 26 and the school career Free Throw Champion on the weekend, and the National Lead in Career Points for an active player with over 2200 points.

Youngstown 1-0 only playing the one game against Cleveland State; Morse had 23 points and 2 rebounds for the 'Guins.

My AP bias is huge... but he should get that 9th POW on Monday...or will the league office ignore the final scores and look at the stats.

So we end the weekend #61, .5727 in the RPI; and a one-and-a-half-game lead in the HL.

In a 5-way tie for the longest winning streak in the country at 7... tied with Monmouth, Mt. St. Mary's, Navy and Sam Houston State.

in a 5-way tie for the 25th best D1 record in the country... tied with Illinois State, Northwestern, West Virginia and...let's see, oh yeh, Kentucky.

Oakland should easily be 4-6 in conference.  5 seconds left with uwm shooting 3 free throws.  At that point I wonder what the odds are that Oakland loses.  And uic crazy non call at the end of the game, Oakland Lucky to be 6-4 rather than 4-6

so, now we know... Wins and Losses are not as important as the stat sheet.

NDIANAPOLIS – Oakland's Jalen Hayes has been named Horizon League Player of the Week after he posted back-to-back double-doubles, averaging 22.5 points and 12 rebounds, while converting a league-best 22-of-29 (75.9 percent) from the field.

Player of the Week | Jalen Hayes | Oakland | R-Jr. | Forward | Lansing, Mich.
Hayes recorded back-to-back double-doubles, his fifth during Horizon League play. The Lansing, Mich., native scored game-highs in both outings, tallying 23 and 22 points respectively. Hayes shot an impressive 76 percent from the floor, going 22-of-29 in the two games, to lead all league players in field goal percentage.

Sunday's win over Milwaukee marked the 19th time in his last 20 league games Hayes reached double figures. He led the Golden Grizzlies in two games averaging 22.5 points and 12.0 rebounds.

This is Hayes' first career player of the week honor and is the first for an Oakland player since Feb. 22, 2016, when Kay Felder earned his seventh weekly honor of the 2015-16 season – the most single-season player of the week honors in Horizon League history.

Nov. 21 – Mark Alstork, Wright State
Nov. 28 – Alec Peters, Valparaiso
Dec. 5 – Drew McDonald, Northern Kentucky | Alec Peters, Valparaiso

Dec. 26 – Tai Odiase, UIC
Jan. 2 – Charles Cooper, Green Bay

22-29 is impressive. Alec struggled last game. It's a team sport and these are individual stats.

Look at it this way: thank god we have things to be excited about beyond these awards. Oakland hasn't been a top 100 RPI team in several years, so beyond these awards, what do their fans have to look forward to at this point? Another Vegas 16 tournament appearance? An upset of the top team? At best, a 15 seed in the tournament? Let them have their awards, they need it.

I think that Peters/Hammink/Tevonn are all top 10 players in the league.  However, I highly doubt all three make it on 1st or 2nd team at the end of the season.  The league will award stat getters from terrible teams.  Also, the problem for Tevonn is that his contributions don't always show up in the stats, but I would take him top 10 in a HL draft any day of the week.  We are 1/2 way through the conference season, somebody should start a thread for "mid-season" awards if the season were to end today.  That could be fun.

http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/game?gameId=400918778

or watch it on espn3

UNF #14 is Dallas Moore.  The guy in a dog fight with Alec Peters for the Career Points lead.  Alec leads by 16 going into tonight.  So far, he has 8 points coming up to the under 12 media in the first half.

So, I'm sure you already know... Dallas Moore... scored 17 points tonight in their blowout loss to FGCU. 4 if 9 from 2pt, 3 of 9 from 3pt and missed his only free-throw attempt...

so, until Thursday... he has a 1-point lead on AP for the career points lead.

Toledo at Ball State (Cards favored by 3.5) Cards 81-80... but they really tried to give it away!
George Washington at Rhode Island (Rams favored by 10.5)... tied at 69,  Rhode Island closes on 13-1 run to beat George Washington
Loyola at Missouri State (Most favored by 2).... failed to cover, but 1 is enough 82-81 in Overtime!
Georgia at Kentucky ( 'cats favored by 16.5) 90-81 in Overtime.  Mr. Monk had a decent second half.

Started Tuesday at #61 .5725
Ended Tuesday at #58  .5738,  with only the Wyoming @ San Diego State game left...

Hmmmm   Is it even mathematically possible for a team to now have a 14-7 record and be saddled with an RPI of 207  ???

Well maybe if your OOC schedule is ranked 349 and you played in a weak MAC conference which encourages cream puff non-con schedules so they can boost RPIs  ???

Yes!!! We are speaking of Ball St and we possess two of the same anchor wins they have in 331 Coppin St, and 345 Southern Utah.

Question? We signed up for a OOC Tournament which gave us Alabama and BYU on a neutral court but in the fine print we had to host 2 of the worst teams in college basketball. Net, net was this worth it  ???

Alabama at Arkansas (Hogs favored by 10) Razorbacks covered, and thensome... 87-69
Evansville at Indiana State (Sycs favored by 4)  Took'em an overtime, but ISU prevailed 85-84.

so the OOC OPP go 1-1

and Baylor just threw the ball out of bounds with 1.3 seconds to, down 3 at Phogg Allen.

Valpo's RPI #56   .5739  climbed two spots and 1  10,000th of point.

I attended the #14 cincinnati at Tulsa game last night.  I ran into a friend who is on staff at oru. Oru is having a historic bad year after having a bad year last year.

I inquired about the down years at oru and the coach simply said we don't have the talent and recruiting has been taking a hit.

I asked what changed?

He responded that the university doesn't provide cost of living with the scholarship until junior year and the amount is very small compared to other schools.

Since our players live on campus the first couple years, does VU pay cost of living on top of the scholarship? What do the other horizon league teams do?  Is there a chance uic and northern Kentucky pay a great deal more to the players than valpo?

Starting Thursday, Valpo's RPI #56   .5739  ... Immediately after the VU Win was posted, the RPI climbed to 55... very briefly.

UDM @ Cleveland State 6pm - Vikings favored by 6.5 CSU 90 UDM 73
OAK @ Youngstown State 6pm - Grizz favored by 7.5  OAK 90 YSU 76
UIC @ Green Bay 7pm - Phoenix favored by 8 - GB 84 UIC 80

Three in the books and three to go:  #57  0.5734 That's what happens when you play #259 (who climbed to 258 on the loss)

Santa Clara @ Portland 9pm - Broncos favored by 5
Arizona State @ Oregon 10pm - Ducks by 17 FoxSports 1
Gonzaga @ BYU 10pm - Bulldogs favored by 8 ESPN 2

The line on the Milwaukee game tonight has fallen to 8.5, starting yesterday morning at 10... The O/U at 134...up from 129... so... 71-53... we covered the spread but not the OU

Three in the books and three to go:  #57  0.5734 That's what happens when you play #259 (who climbed to 258 on the loss)

Santa Clara @ Portland 9pm - Broncos favored by 5 - Jared Brownridge had three 3-pointers and 17 points, Santa Clara held Portland to 16 second-half points to win 60-45
Arizona State @ Oregon 10pm - Ducks by 17 FoxSports 1 - Dillon Brooks scored 27 points, including the last 12 of the game for #13 Oregon, and the Ducks escaped with a 71-70 victory
Gonzaga @ BYU 10pm - Bulldogs favored by 8 ESPN 2 - and they covered 85-75

and the RPI ends Thursday:  #57   0.5735     BYU at 96, 'Bama at 67 and URI at 44 are helping, AND, Santa Clara is at #144.  Which is answering one of the questions posed earlier... Oakland has fallen to #145.... now our worst loss of the season.

Friday 2/3 Action:

Rhode Island at Davidson, the Wildcats are favored by 4.
Buffalo at Ball State, the Cardinals are favored by 10.

Your turn.

They are both named after brothers. Wright State was named for the very famous inventors of flight, Orville and Wilbur Wright. Ball State is named for Frank and Edmund Ball, who started the Ball Brothers Glass Manufacturing Company in 1886. In 1889 the company relocated to Muncie, Indiana. In 1969 after a few name changes it became the Ball Corporation. They also let three more Ball brothers into the company, William, Lucius and George. So there were actually 5 Ball brothers involved in the manufacturing business. Later on they bought the school in Muncie that had gone bankrupt and after a few years gifted it to the state of Indiana for the education of teachers. Later on the school was renamed Ball State University to honor the manufacturing brothers who donated the school to the state.

The Ball brothers uncle, George Harvey Ball, an educator and president of Keuka College of Kueka Park, NY in the Finger Lakes region, gave the money for the two original Ball brothers to buy the Wooden Jacket Can Company of Buffalo (which was the company that eventually became the Ball Corporation of Muncie). It was their gratitude for their uncle's sacrifice that led them to buy the school in Muncie and dedicate it to educating teachers.

I found this part of the history of Keuka College on wikipedia:

The College faced financial troubles and decided to suspend active instruction in 1915. In 1919, Arthur H. Norton (after whom the Norton Chapel is named) was chosen as the president of Keuka and worked to revitalize the College. Under Norton, who would serve as president for the next 16 years, Keuka resumed instruction in 1921 as Keuka College for Women. During this trying time (1919-1921), Norton personally wrote more than 3,000 letters, published and mailed at least 10,000 pamphlets, made 66 speeches, and surveyed 76 colleges in order to advance Keuka's cause. Dr. Gertrude Martin, former dean of women at Cornell University, became a Keuka trustee and advised the now women's college[29] The Ball Brothers—founders of what would become the Ball Corporation, a S&P 500 company, and benefactors of Ball State University—were among the key supporters of Keuka at this time. Years earlier, with their father in poor health, the young Ball brothers "found a friend and confidant in their uncle," George Harvey Ball. When the Ball brothers' mother, Lucius Styles Ball, died, Uncle George provided financial support and some measure of stability to the young Ball brothers. George Harvey Ball also provided his nephews with funds that helped launch their successful enterprise.[30][31] The Ball brothers expressed their gratitude to their uncle by supporting Keuka College, donating land and providing funds. In recognition of this, the first academic building was renamed Ball Hall (Ball Memorial Hall) in 1921 after founder and first president George Harvey Ball and the Ball Brothers[32] The Ball Family also supported Hillsdale College in Michigan.[33]

I really don't understand why you thought "What do Wright State and Ball State have in common?" would lead to a comical answer.

Have I truly been that comical before?

Obviously not.  ;)   ;D

Just a legend in my own mind.

I'm truly sorry for the letdown. The question was truly meant as a learning opportunity. This board doesn't need to talk repeatedly about improving facilities. Valpo is an educational institution We need more history lessons on this board!!!   :P

so... we start our Tuesday with the RPI at # 64, numerically  0.5670

Tuesday:
Ball State @ Akron - Zips favored by 13
Alabama @ South Carolina - Gamecocks favored by 14
LSU @ Kentucky - BBN favored by 31 !  Yes, 31
Rhode Island @ UMass - Minutemen favored by 1

other questions to be answered tonight...

Can Butler lose it's third game in a row (on the road at Marquette)
Can Vanderbryce get revenge of the 1-point loss to Arkansas... this time on the road?
Can Penn State actually BEAT MARYLAND at the Bryce Jordan Center...Lions are favored by 1 (97% of the money is on the Terps)
and what about Naomi?... sorry, it's been a long day.

so... we start our Tuesday with the RPI at # 64, numerically  0.5670

Tuesday:
Ball State @ Akron - Zips favored by 13- Isaiah Johnson with a shot at the buzzer...65-63 Zips
Alabama @ South Carolina - Gamecocks favored by 14 - took 'em 4 OTs but Bama pulled this one out 90-86 after missing GW shots at the end of every OT period.
LSU @ Kentucky - BBN favored by 31 !  Yes, 31... well, OK, they hung on to win 92-85... but, still a W
Rhode Island @ UMass - Minutemen favored by 1, another OOC OPP get's it done...Jared Terrell scored 14 points and Rhode Island made 5 of 6 free throws in the last 34 seconds to defeat UMass 70-62.

other questions to be answered tonight...

Can Butler lose it's third game in a row (on the road at Marquette)... no, they held on to win 68-65.

Can Vanderbryce get revenge of the 1-point loss to Arkansas... this time on the road? - Yup. Big Time!   Jumped out 39-18 at the half, won it 72-59.  Poor Adam Amin.  Because of the 4OT game with Bama, Adam came on the air on the SECNetwork with 12:21 to play in the game.  Relegated to the WatchEspn App for the blow-out portion.

Can Penn State actually BEAT MARYLAND at the Bryce Jordan Center...Lions are favored by 1 (97% of the money is on the Terps)... and 97% of the people LOST their money.  PSU wins it 70-64.

and what about Naomi?... sorry, it's been a long day.... and the "Electric Company" reruns may come back to PBS someday...

After coming within a buzzer beater to have the OOC OPP sweep tonight... the Valpo RPI... DROPS to #67   0.5684  gained 7/10,000ths of a point, but dropped 3 places in the rankings.

Looking up to these three:
Akron 18 - 5              0.5689   #64
Houston 16 - 7           0.5688   #65
Georgetown 13 - 12    0.5687   #66

oh, come on... It started as a comedic line on the PBS kids show "Electric Company"... whenever there was a mystery, or tune in next week... they always threw in that tag line...    Rowan and Martin's Laugh-in Spoofed it regularly... but you would have to be as old as I am to remember it.

Here's a sample:

The entire "Love of Chair" sequence ... classics if you happen to have a 2-year-old running around...like I did those many years ago...

Not sure what you're asking here.  When I read '200 plus', I think above/plus/better than.  By my research we have finished the season with a better than 200 RPI in 9 out of the last 10 seasons, not counting 2017.  The only season where we finished with a lower than 200 RPI rating was 2008-9, when we finished 9-22.

making for a nice jump:  #69 0.5620 yet only a gain of .0003

OOC OPP helped us here... and the chance at a 4-game sweep on Wednesday would be nice.

Well, it's amazing what can happen when I actually think a 4-game sweep is possible...This is why I don't go to casinos.

Wednesday's Schedule:
Fordham at Rhode Island - Rhody scores 21 in the first half and 22 in the second half...Jovantae Hawkins scored 20 points and added nine rebounds and Fordham earned a 53-43 win

Indiana State at Loyola - Syc's score 20 in the first half and 26 in the second half...Leading 24-20 at the half, the Ramblers made 6 of 10 3-pointers and shot 56 percent (14 of 25) in the second half.

Alabama at Missouri - Tide STOLE this one...With just under five minutes remaining, the ball appeared to go out of bounds off Ingram, but was ruled last touched by Missouri, inciting boos from the home crowd. Following that call, Alabama hit back-to-back 3-pointers on the ensuing possessions and never surrendered the lead.  Ref BLEW that call big time.  57-54 Tide.

Illinois State at Missouri State - Bears hold Illinois state scoreless over the last 1:50 of the game, but could only score 4 themselves, losing 67-66

so... the OOC OPP go 1-3, and got lucky to get that 1...

Valpo Opens play on Thursday:   #70   0.5610... dropping .0010 and one place in the rankings.

Thursday Action:... be fun if all of the Home Teams won.

Northern Kentucky at Cleveland State 6:45pm - Nolan line has the Vikings favored by 1
Wright State at Youngstown State 6:45pm - Nolan line has the Raiders favored by 5
Utah at Oregon 8pm ESPN - Nolan line has the Ducks favored by 9.5
Pepperdine at Santa Clara 9pm - Nolan line has the Broncos favored by 9
San Diego at BYU 10pm ESPNU - Nolan line has the Cougars favored by 16.5

and you can track the Dallas Moore point total ... going into the weekend, Moore is 1 point ahead of Alec for the career total points lead...

North Florida Ospreys at Lipscomb at 6:30 on E3

Moore had 39 tonight for North Florida.  Saw a note that last month he scored 23 points in 4:14 !   He's now ahead of AP by 40 for career points.

Gonzaga fans chanting NIT as BYU celebrates the big win.  Lol.  Not sure how RPIs work but I have to think this can't hurt Valpo's.

Holy cow. Wright State ran UIC out of the building 87-49. jeez have some pride. Leaving Dayton with their tail between their legs.

UIC has a had tough season losing Dixson but any other coach with that amount of talent on that roster would be having much more success if they weren't coached by McClain. He's a prolific recruiter but not a great coach.
